Tokoname

Tokoname is a city in central Japan that's best known for pottery production. The Pottery Footpath trail links several historical sites, including Dokan Zaka, a path paved with ceramic fragments. The large Climbing Kiln is angled into the nearby hillside. INAX Live Museum displays hundreds of decorative tiles. Tokonyan is a giant statue celebrating maneki-neko, the famous, waving "lucky" cat figures made in the city.

International airport
Sights & Landmarks
Chubu Centrair International Airport, nestled on an artificial island in Tokoname City, serves as a vital gateway connecting the Chubu region to both domestic and international destinations. This modern airport boasts direct rail access and convenient on-site accommodations for travelers. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of aircraft taking off and landing from the observation deck while exploring a diverse array of restaurants and shops that showcase the culinary delights of the Chita Peninsula.
Despite the gloomy weather, I really enjoyed my time at Chubu Centrair International Airport. The Sky Deck observation area is spacious and offers a great view of the runway—perfect for plane spotting or just taking a relaxing walk. The airport itself is clean and well-organized, with plenty of restaurants and shops to explore. I also loved the fun touches like the ninja figure inside the terminal—it added a bit of charm and made the experience even more memorable. Definitely worth a visit whether you're flying out or just passing through!

Spacious airport with reserved parking available. Clear signs make it easy to get around. There’s a kids’ play area only in Terminal 1, plus restaurants and ATMs throughout.
Ellen M — Google review
The airport was spotless and super convenient, with plenty of restaurants and shops. Plus, the train station is right there, making it easy to get to Nagoya city. You'll also find tons of hotels nearby, and a ferry to Tsu city – lots of options!
K K — Google review
Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) is one of the most pleasant and efficient airports I’ve ever experienced. From the moment you arrive, everything feels well-organized and thoughtfully designed. The airport is clean, spacious, and easy to navigate, with clear signs in English, Japanese, and other languages. Immigration and baggage claim are usually quick and hassle-free. One standout feature is the Flight of Dreams attraction featuring the Boeing 787 Dreamliner — a unique and interactive space that’s great for families and aviation fans alike. The Sky Town shopping and dining area is also impressive, offering a wide variety of Japanese and international food at reasonable prices. Overall, Centrair feels more like a travel destination than just a stopover.
CVM T — Google review
It’s quite simple to go to the train station from the airport by simply following the metro sign. However, it’s quite a walk for about 15 minutes from Terminal 2. You’ll have to go to Terminal 1 first and pass through the food court to arrive at the train station.
JASMINE L — Google review
Japan is the last place where you’ll experience such politeness, cleanliness, and beauty all at once. The moment you board your plane and leave, you’ll start missing everything about it—the orderly streets, the respectful bow of a shopkeeper, the spotless train stations, and even the quiet efficiency of daily life. Whether it's the convenience of vending machines on every corner, the precision of the bullet trains, or the warm hospitality of its people, Japan leaves a lasting impression. Once you’ve been there, nowhere else quite measures up.

Chubu Centrair International Airport is one of the best airports I’ve been to! It’s immaculately clean, spacious, and easy to navigate. The car rental signs are super clear, making it quick and simple to pick up a vehicle, which is always a huge plus. For families, the FLIGHT OF DREAMS is a fantastic free attraction. It’s an interactive experience centered around a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with loads of hands-on exhibits that are perfect for kids. My child had a blast pretending to be a pilot and learning about aviation! The airport itself has plenty of seating, charging stations, and a great selection of restaurants and shops. Overall, it’s a top-tier experience for both adults and kids. Highly recommend it!

This is an airport for Nagoya, one of Japan's major cities. It's convenient because you can reach the airport from Nagoya Station within 30 minutes by high-speed train. There's also a slower local train that will get you to Nagoya Station within an hour. The airport, typical of Japanese airports, is clean and well-organized. There are many seats and plenty of shops where you can purchase various goods. There's also an Issey Miyake store, which is popular among Koreans, and many other luxury brand stores. Overall, it's an excellent airport.

Museum
The INAX Museums offer a captivating journey into the world of ceramics, showcasing an impressive collection of tiles and terracotta artifacts. This museum complex features over 1,000 decorative tiles from various cultures, including ancient Egyptian replicas and traditional Japanese designs. Visitors can explore six distinct halls filled with valuable ceramics, ancient toilets, and even participate in hands-on pottery workshops at the INAX Live Museum. The experience is enriched by excellent English descriptions throughout the exhibits.
This museum is infact a collection several smaller museums so go around the grounds! You have to book in advance if you want to do the pottery / ceramic workshops. Definitely worth the small detour if you are already on the pottery trail.
Tryon Q — Google review
The INAX Museums feature a fascinating Toilet Museum, tracing the evolution of Japanese toilets. Don't miss the gift shop's unique souvenir: "manaka" (monaka), a toilet-shaped sweet filled with delicious red bean paste. It's a fun and quirky treat!
Jessie W — Google review
Definitely worth the price for wristband access to both INAX and tile museum. I enjoyed learning about the history of Tokoname and its role in ceramic production. The museum experience has been designed with the spectators comfort in mind, they even have UV umbrellas outside each museum which can be borrowed when walking from one building to another. The grounds have a workshop, the old factory building (now a museum), a restaurant and the tile museum. The best part for me was the tile museum, which featured exhibits from around the world describing how different cultures use ceramics. Everything was in English so I could understand it fully. The mini exhibit on porcelain toilets was entertaining and memorable!
Alix — Google review
visited this place as part of a cultural exchange program. Wonderful place to bring your kids and try tiles crafts and know the history of the beautiful city Tokoname.
Muntasir M — Google review
A really holistic and modern facility to learn more about the history of Tokoname pottery, bricks, and more! Even without reservations, you can go to the workshop to try your hand at making mosaic pieces. For a very reasonable 900 yen, I made my own photo frame with unlimited basic tiles! It was really enjoyable and a good way to immerse yourself in the special craftsmanship of Tokoname 😄

They are amazing...it's a very nice place to come to visit... In your stay in Japan you have to visit this museum, the reasons are to learn how was the life's os people from so long ago ... And how important Tokoname was to the Japanese people ... We are amazed with the history...thank you to have us there ... Love this museum 🖼️🎨

I chanced upon this due to a street sign and it turned out to be an absolute eye opener. This is a complex of various buildings covering different topics about ceramics, like history of Tokoname town, where the stuff fired in their kilns have been used in other places of Japan, how pottery stuff was made throughout history all over the world, and lots and lots of beautiful tiles.
Z Z — Google review
I was totally incredulous when my wife suggested we should visit the INAX museum of ceramics after we had a wonderful lunch with our good friend in Chita peninsula. The only connection I could think of between INAX and ceramics were toilets, and I wasn’t even a big fan of INAX’s toilets. I was pleasantly surprised, however, by an eclectic collection of authentic artworks, some of which date back to the ancient Islamic and Egyptian empires. It was also quite amusing to see a section exclusively dedicated to stunningly beautiful “old toilets.” I was slightly disappointed that my wife didn’t enjoy them as much as I did as she was put off by the fact that all of them were once used. (Who cares?) By the way, the buildings themselves were so pretty that they had a feel of museum displays in their own rights. Highly recommended!

Nestled in the charming city of Tokoname, the iconic Tokonyan stands tall at an impressive 3.8 meters, making it a must-see for visitors. This giant white cat statue, with its paw gracefully raised over a concrete wall, serves as a welcoming beacon along the famous Maneki-Neko Street.
Beside the big cat, those pottery smaller cats are worth visiting as artworks, no matter you like cats or not. You will be surprised by the creative talent of those artists.
Marc C — Google review
Very cute and made us soooooo happy. But today was soooooo cold and so we were staying outdoor for those lovely cats was such a challenge.

Thought it was super cute. Simple joys really. The whole experience was just about 5minutes, unless you really take time to notice the efforts in the craft.

Very interesting place to be if you enjoy walking, cats, arts... the village trail is a 30-45mins walking distance with time for photos, stop for restroom, etc. There are many scruptures along the way, on the side walk, on the ground. The station is two stop after the airport terminals. Other than the train, the walk is free of charge. I would love to visit there on my next visit again.

The guardian of Tokoname. You can't miss it, just walk on the maneki neko street and you can see it from below. Go to the pottery footpath streets and you can see it closer.

Dokanzaka, also known as Clay Pipe Hill, is a picturesque slope in Tokoname adorned with sake barrels and large pipes, and scattered with fragments of ceramics. This area is renowned for its focus on pottery, attracting visitors from around the globe who come to learn the Japanese art of crafting pottery. The setting for the famous Japanese anime 'A Whisker Away' is inspired by this charming locale.
Great photo spots in the village area, there is a route where you start from point 1-20, you can spend a few hours walking and seeing various pottery shops you can purchase many styles and they are all hand made. Recommend for those people that love pottery and seeing Japan’s traditional village.
V M — Google review
This area was just fantastic on every level! It is an artsy community that's primary focus is pottery. People from all over the world come here to learn how to craft it the way the Japanese do. The setting for the famous Japanese anime A Whisker Away was from this area as well, which made the experience very exciting for my daughter as she pointed out things from the movie. The visitor's center at the train station gave us a map of the Pottery Footpath so we could see the 25 highlights in the area. There is an A path that is shorter than a longer B path. The path is marked very well with signs! There were craftsmen working in shops creating pieces on the spot, many cool unique shops, and so many unique things to look at! There were also places you could make your own pottery- or paint it as well. Even the cafes and restaraunts had a cool flair of pottery in their buildings and served food on unique pieces. The town really has come together to highlight their craft- the walls, streets, and entire area was just a pure showcase of all things pottery. I took so many pictures- there is no way I could post them all- if you are ever in this area, and you like pottery, you should definitely check it out!

There were no other customers when I arrived, but it quickly filled up. There are only six tables, so it's best to come early or make a reservation. There are five lunch menu options, ①-⑤. Then, if you go up the slightly steep wooden staircase, you'll reach the cafe space on the second floor. The retro and calm atmosphere spreads out, allowing you to relax. This time I had the peach shaved ice, which was a generous amount of juicy peaches on top of a generous amount of ice, and the condensed milk syrup enhanced the sweetness. It's the perfect dish for the hot summer. The yuzu mango mini sundae that I ordered with it was also refreshing, with the texture of the granola adding an accent, and it went perfectly with the coffee. It's a great place to stop by between sightseeing and walks, and it's a wonderful shop that I'd definitely like to visit again.

I had a parfait lunch. But the appetizers and meat came out delicious and I was very satisfied ❗️ The parfait was a huge serving of strawberries and I was very happy. The price was okay, but I was very satisfied with the overall atmosphere. but At first, there was no paper menu, and I had to scan a QR code with my smartphone to order, which was confusing because I was not used to it. I was later brought a paper menu. Another negative point was that when I wanted to make an addition, it was difficult for someone to come when I called, which made me feel uncomfortable. It is recommended as a place to go for a celebration. I was in the neighborhood, but I didn't have a chance to go there, so I finally got around to it 😊 This is a shop that previously introduced sweets such as macarons and gelato sandwiched together at ``Gussanya''. It feels innovative these days, as the menu is selected by scanning a QR code on the panel. It's impossible for the elderly All the dishes were delicious. The last roll cake was quite heavy but it was delicious😋💓 However, the customer service attitude is a bit disappointing. The female staff member certainly looked busy as the place was full on the Sunday after Christmas, but it didn't feel like an elegant French lunch, and was rather unfriendly. . . There was no explanation of the menu, and the instructions on how to order seemed vague. As someone who was visiting for the first time, I couldn't help but feel like I was being seen from above. It was full even during the COVID-19 pandemic. I ordered the lunch course, and each dish was carefully prepared, and the portions were filling. The dessert at the end was particularly impressive. This restaurant was often featured on TV and in magazines, so I made a reservation just in case, even though it was during the COVID-19 pandemic. I ordered a slightly better lunch course since I was there anyway. The soup and salad were very delicious. I think the salad dressing was orange. It had a bittersweet taste, and it had an adult flavor. The soup was also rich, and I wonder how restaurant soups can be so delicious. The pasta was very creamy and chewy, and I wonder if it was homemade. I was full at the fish stage. And then there was dessert. Next to the restaurant is a sweets shop run by this place, so the appearance and taste were amazing. They say sweets are a separate stomach, but I was surprised at the volume. The specialty of the sweets here is the large macarons. At the sweets shop next door, many people came to take out these large macarons.

Link del Mar is a delightful culinary destination that offers an unforgettable experience right by the beach. Picture yourself savoring delicious seafood paella and other authentic dishes in a stylish BBQ area, all while soaking up the sun and enjoying stunning ocean views. Reservations are necessary for dining, but you can easily grab drinks and café items without one. On hot days, like during Obon, guests can find comfort under shaded areas equipped with mist fans to keep cool.
My first time having picnic at the seaside. Paella was really good!

(Translated by Google) I used the Ocean Site from 4pm on a very hot day during the Obon period. One car was parked next to the site, and the second car was parked at a nearby beach. Dogs are also welcome. To combat the heat, there was a mist, a commercial fan, and a shade, so it was manageable as long as I stayed in the shade, and it was comfortable after the sun went down. The meat and paella are both delicious, and drinks are easy to order with mobile ordering. The portions are quite large, but I get tired of eating only meat, so personally, I'd like to try the seafood plan next time. After enduring the heat, you can enjoy a spectacular sunset. If only I wasn't drunk before then. First of all, the mood of the store was very fashionable and cool. The restaurant staff is also kind and makes you feel comfortable. The food is delicious and it's a restaurant you'll want to go to again. I will visit again when I use Centrair.

First impression, was very nice, rustic and authentic. Their Hazy IPA was excellent. I had a small pizza, it was very nice. No question. Only issue was, the atmosphere was stale and off putting. I didnt feel very welcome. Suggest the owner should smile more and show interest to ALL patrons. Very robotic. You are near the airport, and have huge potential. Smile, provided a welcoming atmosphere. The rest was great. Japanese menu vs English menu, was different. Not entirely sure why they did that. Google translate made that apparent. I still recommended this place. Ill be back for a tasty hazy 🙂

No worry for the return trip thanks to the nearby train station. Five local and regional guest CBs on tap as well as Y Market canned products, though a notable OKD wasn't available. Cozy indoor place and outdoor tables. Check opening hours beforehand. Foods are reasonably priced during lunchtime.

The food is bland and the service is bad. Ate here last February 2022 and enjoyed the food rated it 5 star and recommended it to my friends. Then now May 2022 they told me they changed owners and i think they also changed the menu. Not satisfied with the food, was really bland and the service was awful. Plus it’s really expensive. I wouldn’t recommend it to my friends or to anyone.
