Golf course
Nestled at an elevation of 6,200 feet, the Conquistador Golf Course is a stunning 18-hole par 72 championship course that promises an unforgettable golfing experience. With its rolling hills, large trees, and small undulating greens, this course offers breathtaking views of Mesa Verde and the majestic La Plata and Ute Mountains. The layout includes various challenges such as sand traps and water hazards, making it suitable for golfers of all skill levels.
What an amazing course hidden up in The Four Corners! Was lucky enough to play in the 2022 Pinto Bean Classic. The course conditions were exceptional 👍 greens were running 10+, fairways and tee boxes were excellent, bunkers had just the right amount of sand to execute the desired shot 👍👍 the Head Pro and staff went above and beyond too produce a top notch tournament.

Travis was very rude. We scheduled for tee time and certain time and he kept giving us a runaround felt like he was being racist because we were native and Mexicans. Even though we bought items there plenty of times. But definitely not a friendly staff well Travis. The others there helped us as much as they can. Beautiful course though!

I enjoyed the Conquistador Golf Course as it is well maintained and entertaining. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The price is good. The course was well laid out. I plan to return. It was recommended to me and I recommend it to you.

I drove the golf cart, but our group had a great time. Beautiful views + they offered complimentary water/drinks. Thank You!

It's well maintained and groomed. Fantastic views! Good for walking the course. Play 18 holes or 9.

Golf course looks beautiful, but be aware that they don’t open until 8am, even though tee times are available to book online starting at 6am.

Great views a great hit balls

I haven't played many golf courses with scratch golfers wearing jeans and t-shirts. It's like a scene out of Tin Cup. The course is extremely fun and has an excellent practice facility. You will enjoy this great gem of southwestern Colorado golf.

Research institute
Nestled in Cortez, the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center is a hub for delving into the history, archaeology, and culture of the ancestral Pueblo people. It's considered a living classroom that offers experiential education programs for both students and adults. Visitors can engage in week-long small group tours to various archaeological sites, working alongside professional archaeologists.
I was there for a conference and their 40th anniversary celebration. If you have any interest in archeology and how Crow Canyon is working with indigenous natives to respectfully do archaelogy. We had a great time seeing the annular eclipse too. I highly recommend .
Erica W — Google review
I found it very interesting, although the Center was not open to the public at the time I went, I was told that I could walk the trails.

Came here when I was a little girl about 25 years ago for a class camping trip. This trip has always sat with me and will forever hold a special place in my heart. I'd love to bring my family here sometime.
Wheels B — Google review
I went several years ago for a week-long class trip. It was fun and interesting, we learned so much in such a short span of time. The program was well worth the flight from SC to CO!
Emily W — Google review
We went as family and learned so much about life, history, culture and art of ancient people. All of my kids were engaged in the process of discovery and the understanding of how this relates to the modern world. The staff was fantastic and we met so many generous and wonderful people.

Google gets you there, no proper signage to help you find your way in. Drove around it for 15 minutes before leaving to never return.

Interesting info on archaeology of the SW combined with input from many different native peoples groups.

Hiking area
Hawkins Preserve is a sprawling 122-acre nature sanctuary that offers visitors an easily accessible and enjoyable outdoor experience. With its well-maintained 1-mile pathway, picnic areas, and diverse hiking/biking trails, this preserve truly has something for everyone. While it's recommended to visit earlier or in the evenings during summer due to limited shade, the breathtaking views make up for any potential inconvenience.
It's cool but the trails are all just too short for me. Had to walk every trail several times but it was fun good views
Cory T — Google review
Looks like a lot of time and money went into this place in the past. While it could use a little TLC, it's still a great spot to enjoy the trails and soak in nature. Just a heads-up—don’t count on the restrooms. Many of the paths are well-marked, and a lot of the plants are labeled too, so you can learn about the different species as you go. Perfect for a short hike or a longer wander. Stay as long as you like and take in the beauty!
Harvey F — Google review
This is a great place for a peaceful walk. The main path, Mesa View) is paved, wide, smooth and handicap accessible. It is less than a half mile long but does have a little elevation at some points. There are also dirt paths you can follow that have varying distances and levels of difficulty. Hawkins Preserve has a website that will give you detailed information. There is a picnic area and bathrooms. The bathrooms are pretty primitive but they don't smell! This is a preserve so you need to be mindful to stay on the paths, clean up after your dogs (!!!), and leave everything as you found it unless you are kind enough to pick up any trash you may find. I didn't see any. There are some cool art installations, shaded benches placed periodically, and gorgeous vistas. Bring a hat, water, sunglasses, and wear comfortable shoes and your visit will be great! The parking lot is dirt & gravel but well maintained . There is one dedicated handicapped parking spot but the whole lot is accessible. Anyone using a walker, stroller, wheelchair, or knee scooter would be able to enjoy the main path (Mesa View) but it does not take you to the bathrooms or picnic area. I bring small children here but they need to be prepared, this is not a place to run wild. There is a LOT of cactus right next to the paths. Put hats & sunscreen on them, bring water & snacks, and enjoy. This is a great place to do a visual scavenger hunt for local plants & animals. There are birdhouses and many signs identifying the plants & trees. Bring a phone or camera because it's beautiful here!
Susie H — Google review
Great views, easy trails. Bring your leashed dogs and watch for cactus, otherwise the trails are great. Combination of slick rock and dirt with wildlife mixed in. Don't forget the water for you and the pups.
Brigitte F — Google review
Beautiful desert plants and landscape.
Ke Z — Google review
If I didn’t live 900 miles away, I’d run at this preserve every day. Well-marked and -maintained dirt & slick-rock trails, mountain backdrop.
Stephen L — Google review
Great views, several interconnected trails, some ruins and bathrooms too

Museums
Notah Dineh Trading Co is a must-visit in Cortez, Colorado. This unique establishment specializes in Native American art, showcasing an extensive collection of Pueblo, Ute, and Navajo pottery, baskets, sculptures, jewelry, and more. The museum features a remarkable display of Navajo rugs and artifacts from the Old West. Visitors can also explore the diverse range of home interior items such as rugs and jewelry.
Stopped by while staying in Cortez just to look. Employees were helpful, knowledgeable and not pushy. Sam was very helpful and shared much information about the history of the local native Americans. Great prices - my wife and I bought several pieces of horse hair art pottery and some jewelry. Phillip did a great job of packing the pottery so it would be safe for our trip back home.
Ed W — Google review
The store is well laid out and I would have loved to purchase items in the case. I Googled this place and looked forward to coming here after 3 connecting flights and over a 1000 miles journey. I was one customer in the store. I saw 5 people working and stood by the counter while those working were looking at there phones. No one offered any help at all. I guess my purchase was not meant to be. It's disappointing. I am a very respectful and friendly person and I wish I could have interacted with someone. It would have been meaningful.
Deena C — Google review
Original Native American Trading Post, worth visiting. It features not only a wide variety of Native art at great prices, but also an small museum.
Travel W — Google review
This is a fantastic place to stop for many varied jewelry and other local, authentic items. The prices range to cover all budgets, and the staff are more than happy to help you find what you're looking for in a very friendly and very not pushy way! I was also told that this store has a good reputation for treating their indigenous artists fairly, which made me more comfortable with making a purchase. I'm so glad that I was able to stop in and recommend it to anyone traveling to or near Cortez!
Katherine P — Google review
Notah Dineh is THE BEST! I have been shopping at this wonderful, authentic trading post since the 60's. I have a beautiful silver and 14K gold bracelet I bought out of old pawn there 15 years ago. Recently sections of my bracelet discolored. I took it to ND and Sam informed me it was probably some type of chemical reaction, perhaps a new lotion I had used or something of that sort that had caused the discoloration. He cleaned and polished it for me and it looks beautiful, all the discoloration is gone! I was so happy as I didn't know if it could be removed. He said if it happens again, bring it back and he'll do it again. Thank you so very much, Sam, and all the staff. I appreciate all you do for me and others. This is truly the best, most long-standing business. I can always depend on them. I encourage anyone looking for authentic, beautiful, native American arts and crafts to consider Notah Dineh. You can't go wrong! I certainly will continue to give them my business and hope others do the same. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart!

We love this store! Have purchased items including jewelry since discovering it in Fall 2022. My partner had an issue with a piece needing repair and they did a wonderful job. Sam was extremely nice and helpful, as were all the staff, and we will definitely come back when going through Cortez.
Brenda T — Google review
Love this shop! Made this stop along my travels and I'm so happy I did. I met Sam, super cool and smart guy that showed me around the store. He helped me pick out some lovely pieces of jewelry all while teaching me some history, culture and traditions. His and his coworkers energy was welcoming, pleasant and grounding making this nomad feel at home. The pieces I have spent many years looking for, I found at a very good price. If driving by, you need to make a stop at this beautiful hidden gem.

We’ve shopped here for decades. Nice family owned shop with good prices. We send guests there to shop for gifts to take home. No pressure to buy at all. The museum is a vintage gem.

Loved it. Fresh farm-to-table food. Clean, casual atmosphere. My husband got the chicken sandwich & I did the Chicken & the Egg salad. Flavorful, healthy, clean food. Loved that they had a small selection of farm produce in a refrigerator to buy too. Bummed they were out of carrot cake to try, maybe next time. 😊

Stopped by on our way through town. All the servers were very nice and accommodating, especially for our big group. Food did take awhile to come out but everything was prepared fresh and absolutely delicious. We had the chicken pot pie, chicken tenders, kids pizza, and a burger. The burger was excellently flavored, but just slightly on the drier side. We all loved the homemade bread buns as well. Thank you for an tasty and filling meal. And especially thank you to Pat for being such a friendly and great server!

Our experience at “The Farm Bistro” was a tightrope walk. The welcome was nice, our server Pat was very friendly & funny, the atmosphere is cosy. So far, so good. The first course - a baked Brie with a crunchy Focaccia bread, apples & Jalapeño jelly relish was absolutely delicious! Then the main courses: My wife’s black bean burger was great, very tasty! I was not so lucky: I ordered my New York steak medium-rare; it actually came well done, with lukewarm mashed potatoes and cold Broccoli. I told our waiter Pat, he reacted very professional and wanted to correct it immediately. He came back with a second try: Same result. The meat looked the same (check the pictures!) the mashed potatoes were okay, the Broccoli was still the same - the chef didn’t even replace it! That’s a no-go! I ate the dish anyway for 3 reasons: 1. I hate food waste! Too many people out there struggle every day. 2. I was hungry. 3. You could tell that the meat was of high quality which made it still kind of enjoyable even if it was twice overcooked. Bottom line: A nice place with good service and basically good food - but if such mistakes happen (twice!) I expect the chef to react differently.
Lobo M — Google review
We had a good meal. Portion sizes were ample on most items. Service was pretty good. We got there late in the evening so some items weren’t available. Chicken fried steak was probably the best item we chose.
Chris E — Google review
I dont understand all the positive reviews. Although the drink selection was great and everyone was really nice, I don't know if its that they need more staff or just cut corners, but the pot pie was all frozen vegetables with hardly any chicken, our drink took 15 minutes, the house rolls (although appreciated) came after 20 minutes right before the entrees, and the soup came out after the main course. Seems way overpriced for the portions, quality, and care. There's many other great food options on main street.

Its a great place to eat healthy farm to table food! It was delicious 😋 and reasonably priced. Atmosphere was awesome, comfortable & beautiful. People dating were here, group of friends had a great time, families & older folks. Great for everyone. Passing through Cortez or live here, its perfect 👌 You got to try it. Hey Farm Bistro, come to Arizona huh! Maricopa County somewhere there 😉

We stopped here for lunch on our road trip after looking for places online. Sadly our experience wasn't super great. They were understaffed and had 2 waitresses for the entire restaurant. Because we were new we were unfamiliar with the menu, and after finally deciding on something to eat, the waitress bluntly told us they were out of that food item. They had a giant chalkboard sign out front advertising said food item and we were disappointed with this outcome. Despite this, we managed to find other things to eat and the food was delicious. I hope this was just a busy day.

We visited Cortez a few years ago and had a wonderful dinner at The Farm Bistro. We were there again with our kids and wanted to give them the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful meal -- they were not disappointed. Fortunately we got there early (5:15 pm) and got a table. Shortly after we arrived the place filled up and walk in customers were turned away. We ordered four different entres and all of the them were delicious. (Moroccan Style Lamb meatballs, Chicken Fried Steak, Chicken Pot Pie & Relleno Pie). We were also served a Rosemary Muffin before the meal. I wish we could move the restaurant to the Denver area so we could enjoy it on a regular basis.

Restaurant
La Casita de Cortez is a charming Mexican eatery located on Main Street, just 10 miles from Mesa Verde National Park. Since its opening in 2012, it has been a popular spot for locals and tourists seeking authentic Mexican cuisine in a relaxed setting.
Great food! Tried the Mome enchiladas and it was very tasty! I would definitely order again and recommend you try! Salsa is great, chips fresh. I think you would enjoy La Casita as we did.

Fun little place to eat. Waiter was nice. The food was okay. The guacamole looked soooo good but was sooooo spicy! We had a couple of bites and had to stop. The enchiladas weren't as flavorful as I was hoping. But it was still a fun experience for our kids to eat out.
Tamilisa M — Google review
Passing through town on a motorcycle trip. This place is the real deal. Excellent service, fair prices, and delicious food. I’m a salsa snob and their salsa is a top 3 ever for me. Highly recommend and will absolutely be back when I am in town.
C D — Google review
I think if they hadn't been so busy it would have been fine. There was only one server and we all got our food at different times, and things were forgotten about and no drink refills were offered. Our tortillas for the fajitas came out after the food had cooled and everyone else was done eating. I ordered the taco salad and I think there was more lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese on the kids taco plates. Our server was really nice and we liked him, but he was over worked!
Angela W — Google review
Such a cute and well run place. The server was absolutely amazing, he was kind ,funny, and was on top of everything. The food was better than what we paid for. Not to mention the desert. To top it off it was on the cheaper side.

Authentic Mexican! The enchiladas with green and red chile “Christmas” were delicious and some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. Don’t be concerned about the small crowds inside the restaurant because a lot of people must love it as I watched take out after take out customers coming and going. The Margaritas were great too and our server was so attentive and pleasant. BTW, if you like churros be sure not to miss them for dessert!

Our group of 8 was warmly welcomed when entering the restaurant. We quickly got a free table and our orders where taken. The waitress was very friendly and patient. Food was very good, especially the rosmarin chicken with asparagus. A stop for dinner can be highly recommende.

My wife and I stopped in passing through town and had the Ribeye and the Salmon. Both were cooked and prepared perfectly! Wife also had a drink. I was shocked when we got the invoice because that meal would have been at least twice that much where we are from. Service was great! Would highly recommend!

We had an amazing experience at this restaurant. We ordered the quail and the steak, and both dishes were absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is very cozy and welcoming, and the staff is incredibly friendly and hospitable. It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed such a wonderful meal.

We decided to come for dinner based on the reviews. Destination Grill did not disappoint. We ordered rosemary chicken and pulled pork sandwich and crème brûlée. Service was very friendly and attentive. We have traveled a lot to different countries and this was one of the best rosemary chicken we have had. It was cooked perfectly. The chicken was juicy and flavorful. Salad was fresh. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious. Crème brûlée was delicious with fresh whipped cream. This dinner was exactly what we needed after a day of hiking in Mesa Verde.
Alice P — Google review
3/4 meals were really delightful! The ribeye was a nicely marbled generous cut, chicken was nice, and the pot roast was cozy. Unfortunately the ribs were dry and inedible (for me). They probably precooked it days before and then over-grilled it to warm them up. Also, small portion of their side of mashed potatoes , so not much on the plate if you can’t eat the main. Potatoes are inexpensive for restaurants, load them up I say :) But one bad meal doesn’t make a bad experience, I would absolutely come back. Just wouldn’t mess with the ribs!

In Cortez, a roadside joint glow under string lights, even the name is alluring Destination Grill. We quickly order and we sink our teeth into ciabatta burgers—two wood-grilled patties, salt and pepper perfection, smoke-kissed edges. The menu offers a diverse selection of dishes, complemented by an array of house-brewed beers. This community hub also serves regional cider, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages. With its small local food menu, it's the perfect spot to enjoy great beer and delicious fare in Cortez.
We stopped in here last year while in town, and had a great meal so had to come back. We had the shrimp platter and the Tuscan chicken pasta which were both great. I had to try a bowl of the green Chile stew, which was also delicious. We couldn’t eat dessert, so got the chocolate chip cookie cheesecake and the raspberry cheesecake. Our server Neco was outstanding, even though a tour bus came in right after us. Bravo!

We stopped in for lunch while we were passing through visiting Mesa Verde. I had the french dip with onions and peppers and I enjoyed it very much. Nice flavor with the au jus and liked the crunch on the fries. The waitress, while very pleasant, was obviously being stretched pretty thin to take care of all of the tables so service was a bit slow. Overall, we enjoyed the colorful surroundings. Recommend a stop if you're in the area.

Great brews and a wonderful menu. The veggie sub was delicious. The southwest grilled chicken salad was perfect. The really fine bar and superb brews on tap, brewed on premise. A great variety to be had! Family owned and run. Sweet people and place.

I ordered the BLAST burger 🍔 it was perfectly cooked medium. Very tasty and fries were crispy. The double IPA quenched my thirst for a great beer. Things were a little slow coming out of the kitchen but I cannot blame them. They had two large groups of people (my group included) showing up on a random day at opening. Service staff was very friendly and accommodating. The trivia games were a nice touch to help pass the time.

Arrived at 6:15p on a Thursday evening maybe 6 tables seated between both sides of restaurant. My tea was so old it tasted like prune juice. Ordered appetizer… not great, but not bad. Ordered prime rib for dinner and 20 minutes later, waitress came to tell me they didn’t have any prime rib tonight and she would be right back to get my new order. 20 minutes later she returned and I ordered a cheeseburger but upgraded for $1.99 to wagyu beef with garlic mashers. 30 minutes later waitress returns with the lump of charcoal that was my burger - even tasted charred…and French fries. I let her know I’d asked for mashers and would also need ketchup and mustard. I was nearly done with the burger before she returned with mashers or ketchup or mustard. Waited an unanticipated amount of time to get check as well. She mentioned how busy they were but no food comin out of the kitchen. Bottom line: choose ANYWHERE ELSE in Cortez to eat dinner!

I ordered the brosted 4 piece chicken meal with a side of broccoli and sweet potato fries. When it came out I was excited, it looked good, but one bite would prove otherwise. I'll put it this way if KFC has 11 herbs and spices on their chicken, J Fargo only had one, and it was the pepper I put on it from the table. There was absolutely no flavor. This was the recommended dish from my server, since I had never been there, and after this I'm never going back. Sweet potato fries were good though.

This is a local hangout from what I've been told. It's got some outdoor seating off the bar which is nice. The bar area is proportionate to the restaurant. Local beers on tap seem to be the draw. The menu has a variety of items for everyone. The staff were welcoming and friendly from entry to exit. I ordered a half order of nachos and the brisket salmon with mashed potatoes, and brussel sprouts. The food was good.. Unfortunatley the only downside was the fact that the beans cheese, green onion was warm at best. Overall, it was a good meal after being on the road all day. Definitely worth stopping back again when I'm in the area.

Delicious little hole in the wall off Main St. Not cheap, not expensive, and very well made food. Their beer prices are fair, domestic pitchers start at 12.50 (including twisted tea!) and their homeade beers aren't bad either. The service was good and the atmosphere is cozy. The booths are comfy and there's parking in the rear 😉

We had a good meal. Portion sizes were ample on most items. Service was pretty good. We got there late in the evening so some items weren’t available. Chicken fried steak was probably the best item we chose.
