Gero Onsen, located in Gifu prefecture amidst the picturesque Japanese Alps, is a beloved destination for many. This charming town gained popularity through personal recommendations and word of mouth, with visitors often being introduced to it by locals or friends who have experienced its wonders firsthand. One such individual is Leif Hagen, an English teacher who has shared his fondness for Gero Onsen. The warm hospitality of locals like Hiroko Sensei adds to the allure of this tranquil retreat.

Museums
Gero Onsen Gassho-mura is an open-air museum located just above the town of Gero, featuring traditional thatched-roof houses from the Hida region of Japan. Visitors can engage in various cultural activities such as painting ceramics and making handmade washi paper. The village offers a serene environment to enjoy the unique gassho buildings and relax in hot springs. Additionally, the annual Gero Onsen Festival in August showcases a series of events including traditional dances and a fireworks display.
Small but so nice!! If you go further up the hill to where the slide (すべり台) is you can see the whole park. Played the slide for ¥100, so much fun! They have phone stands for you to take photo without help (so so soooo useful. Thank you!!) and there was also a staff going around to help take photos! Very interactive and beautiful houses. One of the houses even has the actual fire being lit up. Had light snack at Ichikura and tried the river fish (amago) and a sushi. Lovely time there.

Beautiful old houses and a reconstruction of the city as it once was set a charming scene. Visitors can explore a working carpentry shop alongside demonstrations of other traditional crafts. The area also features a museum and a small onsen offering a delightful foot bath. Here, you have the opportunity to collect a six-part stamp by following the entire circuit through the city exhibition, which even takes you up to a slide. From there, you can either slide back down for 100 yen or choose to descend on foot.

Absolutely breathtaking views. The garden is small, but everything is decorated in much detail. The fishpond under the sunlight is particularly beautiful! Hopefully I can come back in the fall to see the autumn leaves!
Melanie T — Google review
A very beautiful place. The location is small, but if you were staying at a nearby hotel, it's worth a visit. I think this should be considered an alternative to Sirakawa-go. There's an onsen for your feet on the premises.
Artem T — Google review
Icon of Shirakawago but moved here when the government was building a dam and the huts were in danger of being flooded. Huts are well-preserved with many interesting exhibits in the houses. Worth the 20 min climb from the train station or you can take the 100 yen bus. Quite a big place to explore so plan for at least an hour here.
Keng T — Google review
Nice place to go to when sightseeing with friends and family. Entrance fee is 800 yen but you can get a 10% discount by claiming the free discount vouchers at the tourist information center outside the train station. There is an onsen/bath house inside the village, 2~3 restaurants, and a loooong slide that you can get on for 100 yen. ☆ You must also try the footbath to relax your feet after walking the whole day! (It's found inside the village) 🚌 You can get on a bus from station to gassho village for 100 yen (buses run hourly)
Stefanie E — Google review
Tranquil and scenic area full of history. Beautiful plantations and the wind chime structure was exceptionally stunning. The restros offered nice local food. On the top of the hill there's the long slide good for both kids and kidults.
Wilfred W — Google review
It's quite a hike(up hill) if you choose to walk. Nothing much here, but just to absorb the traditional farming life. The slide was fun though... But it's another 7mins steep hike up...

Sights & Landmarks
Onsenji, also known as the hot spring temple, is a serene hilltop shrine nestled among trees in Gero. The temple is renowned for its stunning fall foliage and offers panoramic views of Gero town. It houses an 11-headed Buddha that is displayed once every 33 years during the autumn season when the surrounding trees transform into vibrant red hues, creating a striking contrast with the temple's dark brown color.
Onsenji Temple is a unique and beautiful spot to visit while in Gero. After climbing a lot of steps, you'll find yourself surrounded by a cemetery with a serene and peaceful atmosphere. Once you reach the top, the view is just breathtaking. You can see the entire Gero Onsen town from here, and it's truly a sight to behold. The temple itself is quiet and peaceful, with a stunning traditional architecture. The natural surroundings only add to the beauty of the temple. It's a great place to visit for seeking a moment of peace and tranquility.

Nice temple overseeing the village that's known for the Possibly one of the best hot spring in Japan. It seems that they have over-marketed this place & now it feels like a theme park rather than anything authentic. IMHO Still the view is stunning.

Fun temple to pray. I got my shrine stamp for 300 yen and got a great view of the city. Great way to start my trip to the area.

Japanese inn
Inn
Suimeikan is a premium lodging in Gero, offering refined rooms and suites. The hotel features six restaurants, a bar, and hot-spring bathhouses. Guests can enjoy the convenience of walking or taking a shuttle from the nearby station. The spacious rooms provide lovely accommodations, while the meals and service are highly praised. The hotel also offers three large baths that are clean and not overly crowded. Additionally, there are amenities such as a shop, arcade, and gym on-site.
The place is great, with very good service, and the food is excellent. Location wise is perfect for travelers with or without a car. There is a JR train that will stop very near the hotel. Nice town to visit you can even go down to the river some locals go fishing in the river.
Leo M — Google review
The ryokan is conveniently located within five minutes from Gero Station by the complimentary shuttle bus. As a large property consisting of three interconnected buildings, each with its own onsen, it offered the chance to enjoy different atmospheres of hot springs, which was a wonderful experience. The breakfast was abundant with a wide variety of options, making for a very satisfying start to the day. I also enjoyed walking through the garden with its pond, located between the lobby and the breakfast hall, which added a touch of tranquility to the stay.
Kyungeun J — Google review
I stayed here in June 2025 for one night and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is a traditional Japanese ryokan with futon bedding. The staff thoughtfully prepare the futon while you are away at dinner, which is served in a Japanese multi-course style with dishes presented one by one. There is also an onsen available, which was perfect for relaxing after a long day. The hotel offers several activities, so I recommend checking in as early as possible to make the most of them, or to enjoy a peaceful walk around the quiet town. The area is calm and serene—an ideal place to unwind and truly experience Japanese hospitality.

An almost century old institution in Gero. Service was impeccable with a whole group of staff greeting us at the entrance during check-in. Rooms are spacious with us opting for the western-style beds. Facilities are grand though a little dated. There are 3 onsens to choose from and of varied ages. Food and shopping options aplenty within the resort. Location is also right next to the train station.
Keng T — Google review
This is a big hotel consists of 3 main buildings and of course onsen! The room is neat and clean with tatami floor. Their breakfast is great and delicious 😋
Thaniwan B — Google review
This hotel is massive. Its comprises of 3 buildings and each building has its own public bath. And one of them has outdoor bath. The room I booked has balcony but it was too chilly to sit outside. Gym and swimming pool are also available but for ¥1,000 fee. Dinner was not impressive but the hotel provided 2 different foods on each dinner during my 2-day stay. Breakfast spread was good but it is buffet style and it was busy and chaotic. The best thing about this location it is very close to Gero station yet the hotel has pick ip and drop off service for every train schedules.
Thanathip M — Google review
I LOVE THIS HOTEL❤️ I only stayed here for one night but I wish I had stayed for another night here at least. The hotel is old and huge with 3 buildings but still well maintained. I opt for a private Onsen and it was the best decision ever as I could enjoy my Onsen experience on my own. The hotel staff also asked us what time do we prefer for them to lay out the futons for us so we could be there to witness it. Breakfast was also pretty good with Japanese and western food selection. The hotel also provides a free shuttle service to and from the station so it’s a major plus point as it was raining when we arrived. One small feedback though - The private Onsen was great but it was located on a floor on its own. When I went over there for my slot, there was nobody on the floor so it felt a little creepy to be alone in such a huge floor. Luckily I had my friend accompanied me so it didn’t feel that scary. But I still prefer it there was at least a staff stationed there to make the experience less scary. Overall though, I still really enjoy this hotel and hope to return to stay here again one day with my family.
Stella S — Google review
One of the biggest and most reputable onsen hotels in Gero. Very popular and full of tourists, so the onsen could get crowded. Pros: - Good service (although not the best) - Excellent food quality - Multiple onsens available (including one with Panoramic view on top of building) - Options of onsen in bathroom - Good Wifi Cons: - The hotel showed its age with the facilities (some of the lifts had a weird smell) - Due to the popularity of the hotel, the breakfast buffet can get very crowded; limited food choices for the buffet (but the available food options are excellent)

Specialty Museums
The Onsen Museum showcases both the scientific and cultural significance of onsen bathing. Visitors can enjoy a foot spa-style hot pool outside, while also observing exhibits that delve into the history of this Japanese tradition. The museum is situated in an idyllic location, with beautiful Sakura trees and flowers lining the entrance. Additionally, just across the street is a free hot spring pool for visitors to enjoy. However, caution must be exercised when using these pools as they can be very hot.
With much gratitude to Mr.Takuhara(?) who I assume is the museum's manager. It was a quiet Sunday just after lunch. First, Mr.Takuhara came out of his office to help us purchase the tickets. We then started walking through the museum, which is entirely in Japanese and, yes, a bit old looking. But we were wrong. Walking past one exhibit, Mr.Takuhara came out of his office again and explained it to us. And, yes, it was actually very interesting: a large interactive display of all the onsen-water-types (from very acidic to very alkaline) found in Japan, below a picture of a famous location, and below examples of what products can be made from that particular water. Cool. Again we wandered around aimlessly and again missed an interesting exhibit and again Mr.Takuhara came over to us. This was an interactive exhibit where you can dip paper test-strips into water from each of the water-types and see the test-strip changes color (acidic-alkaline). Cool. Then we made our way to the onsen and again we got help from Mr.Takuhara. It's a very precise ritual: stick your feet for 5 minutes in the hot water, then walk 4 rounds through the hot and cold basins, then stick your feet for another 5 minutes in the hot basin. Then you're done. Most invigorating and enjoyable. Many hours/walking later, our feet still felt good. Also, don't forget the nice views of the mountains on the opposite side of the valley. Reminder: bring your towel or you can't use the onsen. IIRC, small towels are for sale for 200 yen in the museum. This was the best experience we had in Gifu. Thank you, Mr.Takuhara. (We did not stay overnight in Gifu. If you want to know what which fantastic onsen we stayed, please read my other review.)

Informative but mainly in japanese(little English available). There was a collection of a student's lab experiments with onsen water, that was quite cool
Delia L — Google review
A nice museum where you can learn about the history of onsens, as well as the types of onsens and their various properties. They're all in Japanese, though, and as a non-native we required the assistance of google translate all the way through. It's worth visiting if you're into history and want to learn more about it. There is also a hot-cold foot onsen outside which you can use, it's probably the only cold foot onsen in town as well.
Candy C — Google review
A small but lovely museum with a foot bath where you can relax after exploring the area. It’s definitely worth the 400 yen entrance fee.
Noppadol W — Google review
We didn't visit the museum. We just stop to enjoy one of the many open-air foot hot baths that was just in front of the museum. Water was very hot. Do be careful and not plunge your feet inside.
Lucy H — Google review
The museum would have been better appreciated by non-Japanese tourists if there was English translations for the descriptions/captions.
Rosario G — Google review
I good place where you can see beautiful Sakura trees and flowers on the entrance. There is a free hot spring pool for your feet just cross the street, and for free, you can enjoy the feet hot spring there.
YUNGSHENG C — Google review
Small yet detailed “Onsen” (hot spring) museum in the heart of a famous Onsen town (Gero). Friendy staff with enough English ability to make you feel welcome, but technical information is limited to Japanese. Some stuffed animals could interest young children for a few minutes but other than that not really a place kids would feel entertained.

Dessert restaurant
Yuamiya is a beloved spot in Gero, offering a unique experience of enjoying hot spring water while indulging in their famous onsen puddings. The cafe and gift shop provide an extensive dessert menu, with the highlight being the hot vanilla pudding heated by the natural spring water. Visitors can also try the regular matcha pudding, ice cream with onsen egg, and other delightful treats. The warm and welcoming atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination when exploring Gero onsen.
You absolutely cannot miss a visit to Yuamiya when you’re in Gero Onsen! This delightful little spot is famous for its smooth and rich pudding, which is made with fresh Gero milk and Takayama eggs. What makes the experience even more special is how they keep the pudding warm—right in a hot water bath at the storefront! It’s a unique and charming touch that adds to the cozy atmosphere of the place. But it’s not just the pudding that draws people in. Yuamiya also serves some of the best soft serve ice cream we’ve had in Gero. Creamy, rich, and perfectly sweet, it’s the perfect treat to enjoy after a day of exploring the town. What really sets this place apart, though, is the foot bath available right outside. You can indulge in their delicious soft serve while soaking your feet in a warm foot bath—talk about the perfect way to relax and recharge! Our family loved the experience, and it was a particular hit with our kids. They were delighted to enjoy their treats while dipping their toes in the warm water, and the combination of delicious food and a soothing foot bath made for a memorable stop during our time in Gero. It’s rare to find such a fun and unique experience, and Yuamiya definitely stands out as a must-visit spot in town. If you’re looking for a place that offers not only fantastic food but also a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere, Yuamiya is a must. Whether you’re a fan of pudding, soft serve, or just looking for a cozy place to unwind, this is the perfect stop during your visit to Gero Onsen.

Wide range of products of Gero including biscuit, onsen powder, milk bath, Hida beef jerky, frozen pudding, instant Ramen and etc. The ice cream smell good and creamy. I had fun walking around the store.

There’s a small onsen foot bath in front of this shop where you can soak your feet. I ordered their hot pudding, which is kept warm in hot water at the front. Eating it while relaxing in the foot bath was such a nice experience - and the pudding was really tasty too! :)

Yuamiya is a beloved spot in Gero, famous for its unique and delectable pudding! The hot pudding, made with fresh Gero milk, is a must-try, boasting a rich and creamy texture. Another delightful treat is the soft ice cream with onsen tamago, offering a charming twist on traditional desserts. The matcha pudding was fantastic too. They also sell souvenirs and treats inside the shop. A major highlight of Yuamiya is the foot bath, which allows you to soak your feet in warm spring water while savoring your desserts. There’s no time limit, so you can relax and take your time enjoying the experience. This combination of sweet treats and a soothing foot bath made a memorable and relaxing experience for me in Gero.

Beautiful few day away from city stress , onsen everyday went up the hill to the old village. Ate everything. Do your self a favour try this place for 5 days

Probably THE place to visit when I’m Hero onsen. They are famous for their onsen pudding. You’ll need to pay for it at the counter first and then take a cup from the pudding onsen. It’s very novel and the pudding is delicious! We also tried the ice cream with onsen egg, which hardened upon mixing with the ice cream. Also really yummy
JJ — Google review
Had high expectations because of the review but didn’t rlly meet the expectations.. I got the ice cream with onsen egg, which is one of its signature. I like them both, but I would prefer to have them separately🥲 You could use the onsen while you eat, which is a brilliant idea and a great experience. But the food itself was little bit disappointing.

Yuamiya is a Gero treasure. What more do you want than soaking your feet in hot spring water while having a hot vanilla pudding heated by said water too? The puddings are all nicely arranged in the spring water. At one point, the water went cold so the girl at the counter fixed it and then offered us complimentary hot puddings since the ones we had gotten were not warm (but still delicious). I also tried the regular matcha one and it was pretty great. They also have a nice sweets collection to take home. It all feels great after some onsen time, what a sweet fun town! gero gero 🐸

Unagi restaurant
Unasho Restaurant in Gero City is an absolute must-try for anyone looking for quality unagi dishes. The low-salt version I ordered was a pleasant surprise, as it lacked the heavy sauce typically found on eel dishes. The grilled unagi had a delightful crispy exterior and melted in my mouth with each bite. The price is definitely worth it for the exceptional taste.
Hands down this is the best grilled unagi (uncoated) and beef we have had in Japan, the others are great too, but theirs is grilled just right and not give the charrrr after taste (over cooked) in our mouth after dinning. Wasabi is fresh. I felt a let down in the garnishing though, but I guess they are going for the plain Jane style.

Best Unagi! Crispy Skin with real charcoal grill feel. Better than the one I had in Nagoya.

The best eel restaurant in Gero Onsen area. The service is good, eel rice is excellent. Highly recommend. Better reserve to enjoy your delicious eel meal in town.

The food was excellent, and the atmosphere was quiet and tidy. Although our family were foreign guests and my mother had difficulty walking, the service was exceptional.
Beomjun M — Google review
Hands down the best Unagi I've had in my life. It was soft, with a crispy exterior and so flavorful! Not only that but the rice was amazing too! Chewy and fluffy. The Hida beef dish was also delightful, with juicy beef. The meal was reasonably priced for such a high quality dinner. I would definitely return here, even for a short stop on the road to Takayama. It's just that good. Be aware that as of June 2023, it's cash only.
O — Google review
Must try. Ordered the less salt version which doesn't have the usual drenched in sauce eel and man, it's so worth it. I've never eaten unagi that's grilled that crispy on the outside and melts into your mouth. Worth the price :) Ambience wise, I was alone. It's the sit on tatami with cushion, but allows you to extend your legs downwards into the sunken space under the table. Comfortable. Not to mention that I was served by really friendly people.
Z Z — Google review
Best eel ever tried, juicy yet the outer is crispy. And there are 3 ways of eating the rice, (1) eat as it is (2) stir in chopped spring onion, wasabi, and dried seaweed (3) eat with tea. Both the taste and experience is unforgettable.

Senda is a Japanese-style restaurant that offers set meals featuring classic dishes like Hida beef bowls and soba. The ambiance of the restaurant is minimalist and Zen-like, creating a serene atmosphere for diners. While the popular menu item, Hida Beef Hitsumabushi, may require some waiting time during busy periods, it is well worth it as the sauce and meat are delicious. To enhance the flavor experience, it's recommended to try eating it with wasabi.
Senda is a standout in Gero, especially since many places close after 5pm. It’s one of the few spots that remains open after 6pm, making it a go-to option for evening dining. Despite the place being crowded, we were seated after a short 10-minute wait and received our food within 15 minutes. There was no queue, which was a relief. The ambiance was serene with a minimalist, Zen-like design that enhances the dining experience. Though it was crowded, the restaurant wasn't noisy so we were able to enjoy our dinner in peace. The restaurant is known for its great tasting Hida beef and classic Japanese dishes like soba, all beautifully presented. I ordered Grilled Pork Bowl and I must say it was one of the best I have ever had in my life! Do note that ala carte doesn't comes with bowl, so better to order a set in my opinion. The staff were helpful and attentive, even though they spoke only Japanese. Fortunately, they provided an English menu, which made ordering easy. Overall, Senda offers delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing meal in Gero.

Only few late lunch options in town, so decided to give this a try. Ordered the soba tempura and they were pretty good. Not much oil drip to the paper for the tempura and ingredients were fresh. Went in quite late, half an hour before they finish off lunch session, the lady on duty that day still greet me friendly and service was good. There is english menu and they take cash only.

There was amonly a few restaurants opening at that time. Most of shops and restaurants are closed at night in this area. I ordered a soba with tenpura and it was good. Tepura was always right choice specially in Japan but soba was just normal. It was Monday so they had manpower shortage on weekdays, usually the tourists were not, so I had to wait for the order and check. Cost was about $15

Italian restaurant
Restaurant
La Vita e Bella is an Italian eatery where a chef, who received training at home, showcases his culinary skills. They prioritize using carefully inspected vegetables sourced from local producers and are dedicated to premium ingredients. Their menu boasts popular homemade desserts like pizza, pasta, gelato, chocolate gateau, and panna cotta which are all made with locally produced fresh tomatoes. The lunch special comes highly recommended as the dessert, bread, pasta, and pizza were all delectable.
Amazing meal! Great service! The waitress was so sweet. She explained everything in English and confirmed our allergies. Also, it’s vegetarian friendly. They made sure to remove an ingredient without me even having to ask.

A pretty, small restaurant overlooking the Hida Creek, La Vita e Bella serves Italian cuisine made with local produces. The chef’s devotion to their philosophy of service can be sensed in his laborious division of dishes into small portions according to the number of the customers at the table. In addition to the heated bread they serve, as every self-respecting restaurant would do, another highlight worth mentioning is their three-some dessert set: the pink berry sober is richly and pleasantly tangy; the white pennacotta is surprisingly scented with Japanese mint leaves; and, the last but not the least , the twin-coloured tiramisu milky and sweet enough for me to remember it for a long time to come!

This restaurant is wonderful! I loved the ambiance, views of the river, and of course the food. My partner made a reservation for us while we were visiting the area and this was my favorite meal of the entire trip. The staff were so friendly and accommodating, and even spoke some English. Genuinely though, the food was wonderful. The appetizer, soup, fresh bread (yum), pasta and pizza were all some of the best food I've had. Best of all the space is relaxing and fairly small, so you can enjoy your dinner in peace. If you are planning on visiting Gero Onsen, I highly recommend stopping by here! I plan on coming again myself as soon as possible.
