Outdoor Activities
Popham Beach State Park is a rare geological wonder in Maine, featuring a long stretch of sandy beach bordered by the Kennebec and Morse rivers. Visitors can enjoy sunbathing with views of Fox and Wood islands, and even walk to Fox Island during low tide. The park's 529 acres offer ample space for activities like swimming and surfing in the rolling Atlantic waves.
Lovely beach, I have been coming here with my family in the summer since before I could walk and although the beach has changed due to the river and the many storms, it's still a family favorite. I went recently with my family this summer on August 16th. The water was so warm and delightful. I would say it's a very family friendly beach and an overall friendly beach, although you need to watch out for seagulls, they are extremely ruthless at this beach. I had a great time and found lots of cool marine creatures as pictured, a crab and even part of a jellyfish.

Great beach and great Ranger service members. Low cost to enter/park. Actually parking lot that is not all broken like much of maine. Clean beach with soft sand. Good wash/restroom facilities. Good times

Nice beach. Soft sand and lots of space. The cost was a bit much since they charged us per person, instead of per car. So for 3 adults and 4 kids it was 29 bucks. I guess you get charged more if you have guests from out of town. However, after paying the fee we found out the bath houses weren't working. Not fun coming home with sand everywhere. 😕

The beach is beautiful and huge during low tide. You can walk across the sandbar to Fox Island. If you go right at the entrance to the beach, you can cross the Morse River and access Seawall Beach and skip the 2mi hike (just make sure to get back in time before the tide changes).

Very large expansive beach. Kind of a bit out-of-the-way for any town so you better have all beach gear and water you may need. There are bathroom, facilities, showers and clean water. Don’t be lazy go down the beach a bit to spread out and get a bit more privacy. Very interesting beach and very cold water.

This is a beautiful spot to spend the day with your family! During low tide you can let your kids safely swim and find seashells and sand dollars. As a local if you plan to come in the summer months go early in the day as it gets packed.

Fantastic sandy beach. If you go at low tide, you can walk out into the ocean. Lovely views. There has been quite a bit of erosion- climate change in action.

Had a great visit to the park. Beach and facilities were very clean. We got there around 10:30am and easily found parking. Beach was very family friendly...it had tide pools at low tode which were great for our little one to splash around it. Would definitely recommend and plan to return. They did accept credit card payment for entrance fees. Note: Since this is a state park, it is not dog friendly in summer months.

Fort Popham State Historic Site, located near Popham Beach, is a 19th-century coastal military base with a rich history. It was part of a series of forts built on the peninsula, including Fort St. George and Fort Baldwin. Constructed in 1862 using granite, the crescent-shaped fort offers stunning views of the coastal landscape and served as a defense against Confederate attacks during the Civil War.
Really a lovely cool hidden gem to take yourself to visit or bring your kids to. Outstanding piece of history that is well worthy of preservation. Check out our video on our experience on Hammocks to Coasters on YouTube.

Very cool historical site. See pics for information. You can walk at at will, no entry fee nor supervision. it is very cool looking out into the ocean from second floor. You can go up another flight of stairs into the tower. There is a beach right by the fort. Be aware that there are outdoor (smelly) restrooms. There were hand sanitizers. There a little restaurant just up the road a small ways.

Fort Popham turned out to be an absolute gem—totally unexpected and completely worth the visit. The historic stone fort itself is fascinating, with its weathered walls standing guard over the water like a snapshot from another era. The surrounding park is peaceful and well-kept, and the beach was impressively clean. We lucked out with clear skies, making it the perfect spot to stretch out, listen to the waves, and watch a meteor shower light up the night. A mix of history, natural beauty, and a little bit of magic—can’t ask for more.

I had my wedding here and I loved that we got to use that little rock point near the fort for my wedding. It made for a fun location for my guests to talk about for years! They got to explore the fort while everyone was getting things organized and waited for the meal at the restaurant near the fort. I loved it!

Amazing fort with neat History. This is a five star place with one star parking. Local municipality will ticket you, if you don't park in designated spots (I didn't receive a ticket but other cars did). The fort is next to a stunning beach where people will also park for beach access. If you do manage to find a spot, walk the beach for a few minutes too.

Great place to visit and enjoy the history and beauty of the location. There is a beach to explore. We saw seals and basking sharks too

This is a nice historic site for Maine. I actually went here to do some striped bass fishing and not to sight see. It’s very easy to access and walk around at your own pace. You can also take a stroll on the beach very easily or take a swim. The one thing that would make this a better site to visit is to have information plaques around the site. The location is also near a state park which is nice. It allows you to spend some quality time with the family in the outdoors.

Fort Baldwin State Historic Site, located on Sabino Hill overlooking the Kennebec River and Fort Popham, offers an intriguing journey through history. Visitors can explore hidden gun batteries and listen to captivating stories while taking in stunning views of the bay, ocean, and nearby islands. The site features a wooded path leading to multiple forts and three different batteries, culminating in an impressive tower. While the hike may be a bit challenging, it's well worth it for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
Had time to kill before an evening meeting in Topsham so I decided to drive to Popham beach to look around. No one was around so I had the place to myself to explore. Found the trail to Ft Baldwin and enjoyed more of the area.

What a wonderful excursion for me and my dog! We saw plenty of beautiful sites all with historic significance. What more could you ask for?! 🐾❤️

My wife and son and I had a lot of fun here! Great view of the bay out to the ocean and nearby islands, boats, docks, birds. Beautiful on a 78 degree day with no wind. This Fort Baldwin is a bit of a hike, but there are at least 5 forts that we saw. Two were not accessible and a lot of random ceiling pieces were missing so beware of that. Really cool interesting and a little bit creepy historic site.

Amazing little walk and able to check out the site. Super bummer that the look out tower is closed off!!

So much fun to explore this fort! It wasn't busy so we were able to take our time and enjoy seeing every available room as we moved up the hill

Great experience built in 1908. Small parking area. A nice little hike. The tower is chained and locked so no access inside.

A must if you love forts and the beach. The fort is magnificent and a beautiful setting. Walk along the path to 3 different batterys and at the end an amazing tower. Wonderful looking rocks along the way you may even see some quartz crystals and other gems along the spectacular trail, it is a little uphill slope. Well worth a trip and popham Beach is right next door with Fort popham.

Awesome old military fort 🇺🇸, built into the side of Maines rugged granite coast 🥶❄️☠️🌲🌬🌬…. There’s 3 separate batteries built in a terrace formation culminating with the Hawley Battery at the summit. You can stand atop each of the 3 Batteries and sneak peaks of the ocean 🌊. The entire time your there, you’ll hear the constant sound of waves crashing in the beach🏝, which is pretty awesome 🤩🌊🌊🌊🌊👁👁👃👂🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊. In addition to the rustic setting and spectacular views, you’ll also find old brick fireplaces in some of the rooms that are still perfectly intact 🔥😜. We’ve seen a lot of these old forts from Maine to Florida, and this one ranks in the top 3 on the awesomeness spectrum 😎. Each Battery is flanked by 2-3 massive gun turret, which oif all those guns were blazing at once, it would be a sight to behold 😍. After, you can take a short drive across the bay and tour Fort Popham State Historic site. So if your in Bath, Maine passing they and have time to drive down route 209 to Phippsburg, Maine….it’s 💯 worth the trip 🇺🇸🤩🇺🇸🤩🇺🇸🤩🇺🇸. But if you need piano movers near Bath, Maine who cover the entire Northeast and down to Florida, Call Liberty Bell Moving & Storage of Maine today for quotes on moving 👌☎️👌

Located near Phippsburg, Maine, the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area offers a 3.8-mile out-and-back hike over Morse Mountain to Seawall Beach. The area is owned by the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area Corporation and features 600 acres of coastal uplands and salt marshes. Visitors can enjoy hiking and beach activities in this picturesque conservation area that extends from Sprague River to the Morse River.
Beautiful trails and beach with beautiful view. Hike to the beach is not bad at all and the beach sand sparkles with large pieces of quartz. No entey fee. Parking lot had portopotty

Plan for a 4+ mile round trip walk/hike but you're walking on a closed vehicle access road most of the time. Expect hilly terrain but it's not a difficult hike. Beyond that, how can you rate beauty? Hiking from the woods on a trail that ends with a walk along the Atlantic will always be exceptional. The parking lot isn't the biggest and if full, you will be turned away so plan ahead!

Morse Mountain Seawall Beach is a treasure. When the tide is less than high you can walk all the way to Popham Beach and back. At low tide you can walk up to one of the small islands. The hike in is a combination of gravel and paved. It is 4 miles round trip. About 1/4 of the way in you can take a quick detour and have a view from an overlook. There is lots and lots of beach. Many shells and sea glass. Be careful of very very sharp metal lobster trap remnants hiding just under the sand in some places. Especially at mid-tide. There are fewer people because parking is limited. If you aren’t there before 10am you probably aren’t parking and there is no where to park in the area. From the parking area you will walk through a shaded forest with lots of greenery and several rocky formations. Fairly easy short uphill and then down to the ocean. No bathrooms or changing areas so come prepared. The mosquitos are vicious on your walk in and out but it is absolutely worth it. I live locally and I visit Morse Mtn in all seasons. Snowshoe down in the winter with your jet boil and make some camp coffee while you hide from the wind between the rock outcroppings and watch the waves roll in and out. You will not be disappointed.

What a beautiful place! You get everything in one hike, woods, wetlands, summit of a baby mountain with breathtaking views at the top, and a beach. It's just a perfect trail.

Wanted a mild hike and this hit the mark pretty well. It's low over all elevation, however the elevation happens pretty suddenly so do prepare for that. Short side path at about the halfway point that brings you to a peak with a great view. Highly recommend, good for all hikers.

Popham gets a lot of credit but this place provides a beautiful (free!) hike to the beach. The parking lot is small but you can get a spot there pretty reliably in the winter. Not sure about summer. Also, there are no bathrooms or water fountains at the trailhead or at the beach. The trail is actually a two-track that is partially paved in some areas. You pass a few residential places but it doesn’t detract from the scenery. Some of our favorite parts along the hike were the open views over the salt marshes; super cool to see their expanse! The beach is stunning when you arrive, approximately 25-40 minutes for average hikers. Take your time exploring the shore. There are restricted areas to help conserve this natural landscape; stay off the cliffs and walk along the shoreline. It stretches a long ways at low tide! In the spring and summer, this seems to be a great spot to watch migrating birds (including sandpipers and wimbrels). We will definitely be back to see them!

What a great beach...!!! It's a little bit of a walk(+/- 40 mins...+/- 2 miles) but well worth it if you want to be alone. The beach is a couple miles long which makes it even that much more secluded. I doubt it's allowed but...if you go all the way down to the right you can go around to the back side of the dunes and do some nude sunbathing if you like. I was there for 6 hrs today(around the back side of the dunes) and never saw a soul...it's less windy back there as well. Check the tide charts before you go and try to time it so you're there at low tide....it's just amazing....You can walk about a 1/4 mile out before you get to the water. Be careful though, if you're not and the tide comes in on you, you could get stuck going cross-country through the woods to get back to the trail head...at high tide the water comes up the rocks on the left side as you exit the trail onto the beach. Even if you get caught by the tide it's no a big deal to get back to the trail...😁 Anyone who is looking for solitude or alone time or just wants to go for a low impact hike followed by a nice barefoot walk on a deserted beach, this is a great place to check out

The semi-private Seawall Beach is, bar none, the most pristine and unspoiled I've ever had the pleasure to access in New England. It's almost a polar opposite of the sometimes overcrowded Popham beach state park nearby. An amazing experience, requiring at least half a day to make it worthwhile. The experience is not for everyone, though. There are very good reasons why the beach is so beautiful and wild: - No facilities of any kind, not even port-a-potties - A 1/2 hour to 45 minute one-way hike with a significant, but not too steep, climb. - Small parking lot that fills up quickly (by 10:30-11am) in high season. There's a much smaller lot right next to the beach, exclusive to renters/owners with permits from the 5-6 houses nearby. - Mosquitoes in the marshy areas along the way during bug season. The beach itself is usually breezy enough for them not pose a problem once you arrive. I won't deduct any stars because of any of the above inconveniences - that's simply mother nature. If you want to enjoy it, come prepared. Arrive early, bring insect repellent, carry all of your food and beverages, don't wear flip-flops on the trail, and be OK with taking care of your bathroom needs in the woods.
