Baine's Books & Coffee is a charming spot located on Appomattox's Main Street, recommended by the Visitors Center. It offers a relaxed atmosphere where visitors can browse through vintage records and used books while enjoying a cup of coffee. The shop also features delicious quiche and pastries, making it an ideal place to spend some leisure time. Additionally, Baine's hosts local acoustic music performances three times a week, providing entertainment for evening visitors.
Very friendly little bookstore and coffee shop with several seating options. My wife and I enjoyed a table for 2 as we sipped some coffee and talked. The locals are notably as friendly as the service. The coffee was flavorful, hot, and fairly priced with several pastries to choose from as well. We tried a gluten free pumpkin cookie, which was good even for someone that isn't gluten free. Lots of charm and hometown feel. I enjoyed the humor in the cup sizes as well. They have other menu items but we were only here for the coffee.

The atmosphere of the old building and coffee shop and counter cafe make this an absolutely cannot-miss stop if you are passing through downtown. We easily spent over an hour here - maybe close to 2 - perusing the stacks, and we each found a book.

This place is a vibrant community hub with great character and quality offerings. I can not wait to come back next time I’m in town. My only piece of feedback is that there were guitar cases stored on the vinyl record crates when we were there during open mic night. I am positive that a simple request to have them moved would’ve been met with a quick and kind response but I just wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone and I didn’t want to be a bother, but I did want to shop the record selection and spend some money. I ended up just grabbing a hot chocolate and browsing the books instead.

Baines Coffee and Bookstore is a gem of a spot with a truly rustic, classic charm. From the moment you step inside, there’s a peaceful ambiance that instantly makes you feel welcome and relaxed. The décor adds to the experience, with warm, cozy touches that make it the perfect place to unwind. As for the food—it’s exceptional! Made from scratch with locally sourced ingredients, every bite is flavorful and satisfying, making popular chain cafes pale in comparison. Baines has truly set a high standard, putting Starbucks to shame with both quality and taste. And the book prices? Amazingly affordable! You’ll find great reads for a fraction of what you'd expect to pay elsewhere. If you're looking for a cozy place to enjoy a delicious meal and pick up a good book, Baines is definitely worth a visit!
Brandon D — Google review
The coffee was amazing, and the place has a very cozy and relaxing atmosphere. They even have an upstairs area open on weekdays for adults to lounge. I absolutely recommend anyone come and check out this hidden gem!

Celebrating their 20th anniversary now (2024), this is the original Baine's Books & Coffee, and it's fabulous! Cozy, lots of books and LPs for sale, excellent cafe. This is the perfect coffee shop for me! Highly recommended.

Museums
The American Civil War Museum - Appomattox is a significant museum in the state, offering a comprehensive collection of over 400 artifacts, documents, and photographs related to the Civil War. It presents a balanced perspective from both sides of the conflict and highlights key events that unfolded during this historic period. Notable exhibits include General Robert E. Lee's military coat and sword from the time of surrender, as well as uniforms, battle flags, and documents from various units involved in the war.
Very cool experience. Really tells the story from the perspective of the area as a proud confederate, which is what this area was. Lots of battle outfits or prominent soldiers and various confederate flags, mostly with Virginia markings. Wasn’t too busy on a Saturday and had a little gift shop with lots of books, some clothes and snacks. The total cost is normally $15 but for seniors it’s $12.
Christopher B — Google review
Wonderful small museum. You'll need at least an hour for a quick visit. They charged us $13, but it's more like a $7.50 museum. Just saying

Kinda what you would expect at a museum. Nice layout, guys up front were friendly and enthusiastic.

Great stop for adults.. but if you have kids, there is little to do to entertain them while you soak in the info. I had to take pictures of everything so I could catch up later. My small ones were antsy to leave, but my middle schooler was engaged. The outside cabin and grounds were fun! We saw cotton and tobacco plants and a cabin from the era. Would love to see this lovely place incorporate more for smaller minds. Thank you for educating us!! We appreciate you!

If you visit here - check out the multi site discount to visit this location plus the two sites in Richmond, too: the Confederate White House and Tredegar Museum. A small site but very informative - to include General Lee's sword and uniform that he wore to the surrender. There is a gift shop and free public WiFi - no theater movie experience but a short video on loop. Staff were friendly and helpful, too..!

This museum packs a punch. A number of original pieces making this a must see in Appomattox. I won't spoil it but Lee's uniform and sword at the surrender are just a few items here. Don't be turned off by the admission fee, you'll be glad to took the time.
David — Google review
This museum has the most impressive collection of artifacts from the Civil War that I have ever seen!!! From General Lee's actual sword, officer & soldier uniforms from both sides of the conflict, and even ACTUAL battle flags & documents from different units throughout the war!!! The museum is extremely well laid out & clean, the staff friendly, and everything well kept. A definite must see for any historian, history buff, military history scholar... really just everybody!!!!!! Extremely informative about the Civil War, what led up to it, it's impact on everyone involved, the happenings after the war, & it's impact on life today!!!

The Appomattox County Historical Society, located in a charming historic building, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Housed in the old Appomattox jail building, this architecturally unique museum showcases an array of exhibits covering the county's rich past. Visitors can explore Civil War history and relics from daily life in a bygone era. The society offers a fascinating glimpse into the area's founding days and its significant role in historical events.
We stopped in late Saturday afternoon close to closing time. The staff person was extremely gracious and let us in and let us stay late. The young woman was knowledgeable about the displays. We had a good talk remembering about the older tools and items on display. It gave us a good start on our weekend tour of the city’s sites.

An absolute must visit for all historically minded people. My wife and I had an amazing experience just relaxing and soaking up the ambience of the current community as well as the historical story of this place. We never planned on stopping here specifically, but after visiting the main National Park we drifted over to this little gem of an area afterwards. People were very nice and it was a excellent way to spend a beautiful few hours strolling and enjoying the atmosphere. Take the time to grab a coffee and enjoy this wonderful southern downtown, it's worth it.

Enjoyed walking around and seeing the buildings and the battlefield. Would love to see a large reenactment there. Plenty of space for reenactors to camp and would generate a lot of revenue for the park and the town. A reenactment with living historians would be educational for visitors. Loved "The Silent Witness" and bought the doll.

Granny Bee's LLC, a charming diner located on Main Street in Appomattox, has recently been taken over by a mother-daughter duo with a background as waitresses. This cozy restaurant has been serving up delicious homemade meals since 1990 and is known for making visitors feel right at home. Whether you're stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Granny Bee's promises to treat you to a delightful dining experience.
Perfect “meat and three” with comfort food and a quaint atmosphere. I went with all vegetables, very tasty. The cornbread was probably my favorite thing the best I have ever eaten, buttery and moist. Yes, I asked for another and my sweet server brought it. My only regret was after those two slices of cornbread I had no room for dessert.

Great little mom and pop restaurant in downtown historic Appomattox Virginia. Friendly service and the flood was great. They serve breakfast all day. Love coming here when I'm in town to visit family.

Food was great, our waitress even wrote a happy birthday note for my husband. Love a good country diner! And Granny Bee's is definitely it.
Melissa T — Google review
The food was good. The onion rings could be cooked a little longer, I thought, but my husband said they were fine. The food took longer than expected, maybe because I was hungry. Everything was made to order and really pretty good. The restaurant has some really nice pictures on all the walls. The two ladies serving were very nice.

Traveling through town and stopped for breakfast. It wasn't very busy. Food was served fairly quickly. The coffee was average. The biscuits with sausage gravy had only 2 small pieces of sausage. The biscuits were light and fluffy. Omelets were tasty and large. Rye toast was good. Server was very friendly and efficient.

We were visiting the Appomattox Courthouse park and stopped in for lunch. My husband had the special Country fried steak which he said was AMAZING! I had the veggie plate and loved every bite . The stewed tomatoes were especially delicious, they tasted just like my grandma used to to make !

My husband and I stopped in here with our 1.5 year old son to grab some dinner. We live a town over and just happened to be in town for an event and decided to eat dinner before heading home. The menu is your general country cooking: pot roast, fried fish, shrimp, hamburger steak, etc. We started off with an order of fried oysters, which were excellent. We were also served warm rolls among our arrival, which were great. A few minutes later I got my roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes, green beans, and gravy. The green beans were canned but tasty. The mashed potatoes were instant and bland. And the roast beef was just 2 slices of tough deli roast beef with gravy on it. It was well over 15 minutes when my husband and son’s meals came out. I don’t like eating before my son and husband, so I waited. My husband got the hamburger steak with fries and green beans. They brought out the hamburger steak with onion rings and fries. My husband told her he asked for green beans, and she says “oh, I wrote onion rings.” And he said, nicely, “I’m sorry, I did say green beans though.” And she said “okay, do you want onion rings?” And he said “I would like to have green beans because I was gonna give some to my son” and she said “so you want green beans too?” And he said yes. And she walked away and finally got the green beans. My son had no complaints. Lol he’s not a picky eater and devoured his fried catfish, macaroni salad, some green beans, and baked apples. We had to go to the counter for a sweet tea refill, boxes, and ketchup throughout the meal because the server wouldn’t come to the table. She was friendly but not very efficient for sure. The 6 piece fried oysters, 2 sweet teas, a kids meal, and 2 dinners was all under $50, so the price was pretty good. Overall I doubt we’ll come back if we’re in the area, but it definitely left us fed with large portions and a decent price. ETA: The bread basket had a couple napkins in it with the bread on top, and the basket underneath was caked in food debris and dust/whatever else. It was pretty unsanitary.

I went here based on the strength of the reviews when I went to the National Park around the 160th anniversary. It seemed mostly locals. The food was so so. I had chicken salad and cole slaw. Nothing awesome not horrible so middle review. The service was good and the atmosphere seemed kind of plain. Not sure I'd return.
Mike M — Google review
We met up with some friends to wander the ghost town in Pamplin & walk some of the High Bridge trail and stumbled upon the Rail Yard. I had the vegetarian combination with butter beans, mac-n-cheese, corn pudding and some baked apples. The rest of the table opted for BBQ sandwiches as well as some sides. The meat eaters said the BBQ sandwiches were great and they came with an assortment of sauces. The mac-n-cheese was creamy, cheesy and with shell pasta (there is an elbow shortage I am told), both of us that ordered it enjoyed it. We all agreed the corn pudding was the star of the meal. I decided to order a Blueberry biscuit. The biscuit itself was amazing. The perfect balance of sweetness and moisture. The icing was lacking but maybe it was just off that day. Service was great. Price was great. Food was great. Oh, and the nerd in us really dug the antique train items on display. Nice addition of Americana flair. Well done.

The cheese burger was big and juicy, the turnip greens were truly excellent, and the server was beautiful and efficient. The building was a bit seedy but seemed to be clean. I liked the railroad motif. A nice small town restaurant with a homey Southern vibe. Highly recommended.

Just to add to my previous review. This restaurant is homemade everything, good portions, and priced perfectly. The blueberry biscuits were the best we have ever had! Ordered takeout and it was ready when they promised, still hot when we got home, big portions and very tasty!

Italian restaurant
Pino's Pizza & Italian Restaurant offers a wonderful dining experience for those who appreciate being in harmony with nature. The establishment serves exceptional quality food, particularly their delicious pizza and pasta dishes. While the weekends tend to be crowded, the wait is worthwhile due to the delectable cuisine they offer. Pino's comes highly recommended for individuals who enjoy authentic Italian flavors and are passionate about satisfying their cravings for savory meals.
Pino’s offers really great lunch specials before 2pm. This amazingly delicious cheesesteak (with fries!) was less than $10. Bakery-fresh bread and perfectly seasoned beef makes Pino’s the best cheesesteak in town!

Some rather good pizza. While we did find the sauce to be a little lacking in flavor (a little bland), be was very kind to our sensitive stomaches. It was covered from edge to edge with toppings that were evenly spread across the surface of mozzarella cheese. The crust was perfectly crisp while being just a little chew at the same time, like a good crust should be. Better that Papa John's, which is right next door. Don't go to Papa Johns! Pinos is 100% a better option. Their menu is broad and diverse with many options for pizza, salads, sandwiches, and pasta dishes. We also like their selections of appetizers.
Keith R — Google review
Was not a fan of the cheesesteak with mushrooms it was very small and not very tasteful for the price that I paid for it. Pizza was OK but overpriced. I could get a same size pizza at mellow mushroom which is about 10 times better. Nice people, but I won’t be returning.

I've been here several times with my dad. It's not my first pick but he likes it. After last night, I will never give them another dime of my money. The following story is significant to that statement- We get inside and are told to sit anywhere (normal). The young man comes to take our drink order. It takes him a significant amount of time to come back for our food order and a young lady comes over and she tells us he's new. (He's obviously a kid trying to figure it out- no issue there). We order 2 salads and ask for a half & half pizza. When the pizza comes out, he sets it down and walks off. It's a whole pizza with the ingredients my dad asks for. I see the young lady walking by and mention that I think he made a mistake (tells her what my order is). The young man comes back with another pizza with ingredients I asked for and I say "oh he made a mistake and gave us 2." No one was loud, mean, obnoxious, etc. The young lady says "I'll be right back." (She never comes back). My dad looks at me and says "it's fine. We'll keep them." The owner comes by and asks if there's a problem. I tell him I explained to the young lady what happened about receiving two pizzas instead of one. The owner says they can remake them (up to this point we're fine). I say to him "it'll be wasting food." And my dad cuts in and says, "it's fine, we'll keep them." And the owner (with attitude) says "you still have to pay for the food." With a tone insinuating we weren't going to pay. And my dad replies, "I know that but remaking it is a waste of food." The owner repeated "you still have to pay for the food that was brought out." We never said we weren't going to pay for the food. We never asked for a discount. We never mentioned money to anyone. And again, we were polite to both servers. I lost my appetite after that. I asked our server for boxes for the pizza. I let him know that our decision to leave mid-meal was in no way his fault and we could see he was doing his best. My dad paid (for ALL the food/drink we were brought without complaint). I did let the owner know that I was very offended by his actions and that he should really reevaluate his customer service. He gave an empty apology that I refused to accept. As someone who has worked customer service for over 20 years and 6 of those years in food service, good customer service would have been not to charge us for the additional pizza because it was a server mistake. However, that's not something we asked for. The way we were talked to was insulting and I will never return to that establishment. I'd rather give my money to Papa John's next door.

Ordered a steak and cheese sub. Our sub was cooked perfectly although it could have used a little more cheese. We also ordered a couple of lasagnas for dinner tonight. They look delicious.

Having grown up in Appomattox, I’d say that Pino’s is usually pretty decent. The food is fairly priced and tastes like your average pizza place. The services is pretty friendly and the food is pretty quick. Today, while I was eating I noticed that a spider descending from the ceiling. However, it is summer, so I can’t blame them for one insect being in the restaurant. Overall, I’d say it’s a safe choice.

I've been going to this location and before that the Farmville location since I moved to Virgina. I've never once had a bad experience at the Farmville location but I can honestly say, I've never had a good one at the Appomattox location. The first time they ruined the mushrooms, leaving them soggy and like the fryers were dirty, the second time our pizza was cold and this was the third and final time for me, I look up the menu, updated a week ago. I place an order for a small 4 topping pizza 9.50 and a large 1 topping 12.00. I pick up the pizza notice my bill. 30.52. So I call to inquire why I was charged more than the menu price. I was informed that the prices are subject to constant price changes without notice. That the small pizza was 13.25 and the large was 15. First of all there were no toppings on the 13 dollar pizza for them to justify that price second I could have kept my behind in Lynchburg and bought little Ceasars and had a more enjoyable, less pricey pizza. I'm not pleased with paying a price for something and it not be exceptional. The person who answered was rude and it wasn't wasn't price change that passed me off it was paying for something and not getting what I paid for. It was absolutely trash for them to charge me that amount. It only came with 3 out of 4.
Rachel F — Google review
I've been going here more than 20 years. Tonight because of a newly found medical issue I asked for an accommodation on a meal. Just a change of the type of sauce on the dish. Was told no by the waiter. I asked for another menu to find something else. Then the owner came over and asked what was wrong. I explained the problem and he seemed ok with the change on the dish. Then the food comes out and it's exactly what I DIDNT want. So I just ate the sides. I was so angry I was afraid of the scene I would make. Needless to say after 20 some years, I will find another place to eat.

Mexican restaurant
El Cazador is a Mexican restaurant located at 7799 Richmond Hwy, Appomattox, VA. The place offers a variety of Mexican dishes and has received positive reviews for its take-out service. Customers have praised the delicious king Kong burrito, which is filled with chicken, beef, shrimp, rice, green peppers, onions and black beans. The restaurant also serves complimentary chips and salsa that are highly appreciated by visitors.
Wonderful little restaurant hidden in the corner of the strip mall. The salsa is fantastic, and we tried five different meals - all were delicious. My fajitas were excellent. Wish we lived closer as we’d love to go again!

The Al Pastor Mexican Street Tacos are full of savory authentic flavors. El Cazador’s al pastor tacos, while delicious, sometimes contain too much fat depending on the cut of pork used and how it's prepared. These street tacos are a bit overpriced but the chips and salsa and the friendly festive atmosphere make it a great dining experience.

First time customer, me and my wife stopped in to try Mexican cuisine. At the door was a special advertised as king Kong burrito. I ordered this special because I was so hungry. Me and my wife was served chips and salsa and let me tell you they was very good. When my order came it was 🔥hot. I hate being served cold food. This burrito was delicious. The meats inside with the flavoring was to die for. Chicken, beef, shrimp rice with green peppers, onion and black beans ... ahhhh it was divine. Pic in description shows how big it was. I could not finish. I managed to eat 3/4 of it. Compliments to the chef. Real Mexican food that has flavor! Had to get that king Kong burrito again, my wife had the OMG nachos and she was saying how delicious the nachos tasted. We stoped in Sunday July 7th, as always that burrito was superb. Seasoning and always served hot. I was so full by the time I finished that burrito. I love this restaurant! Super waitress and waiters polite and taking care of refills. Always welcomed there. I believe it was the owner that even came by to ask if everything was ok with our meal. I believe this restaurant will be around a long time. Gotta try other meals they prepare but that burrito is calling my name. Definitely going back again.

We were in the area and did a “Google search” and decided to try El Cazador. Luckily, they had everyone spaced out which made us feel comfortable eating inside. We were quickly seated, waited on, nachos as we sat down and drinks to follow. We were so hungry I ordered their Nacho Special— it was out fast and Amazing!! PLENTY OF TOPPINGS and pictured below!! I am usually disappointed with nachos— lots o nachos, little topping, NOT here!! The toppings were delicious and loaded including lots of delicious grilled chicken and steak! I had the Arroz con Pollo— delicious! Two of my kids ordered the Mexican Burger with fries— loved them!! Everything was delicious, fresh and fast! For dessert, we ordered fried ice cream and churros. Both were delish but the churros were to die for! We had a family of 8 (Grandpa, Mommy, Daddy & 5 kids… the youngest being 1 year old twins). I’ve been reading a lot of reviews complaining about “not enough help,” and I know how frustrating that can be for the establishment and patrons, that was definitely not the case here. All of the staff were extremely friendly and very attentive. I’m so glad we stopped to enjoy dinner there— it was truly a fabulous experience all around!

Went here for my first time on Taco Tuesday. I must say the experience started off great, greeted and seated quickly and served a bowl of hot tortilla chips with a very tasty salsa. That’s when things went down hill. As the building filled up, the service slowed down, to the point where I thought about walking out while waiting to settle my tab. As far as the food goes, of course I ordered the tacos and to be honest they were maybe a 2/5. The corn tortillas were chewy and the steak was just not very flavorful. The al pastor was slightly better, but overall I wasn’t impressed. I’d go back to give them another chance, but I won’t order the tacos again.

Nice large venue, staff was very friendly. The food was good. It was really nice of them to allow a monthly goth night in there.

These guys are awesome! They basically made a meal for us in the middle of renovations. It was top notch! Hubs had the rib eye and I had a burger w baked potatoes! They had to grill it and the food was awesome. They are going to start selling deep dish pizza. w smoked Mozzarella Cheese this week and folks go give it a shot as they try to bolster the Appomattox community! Awesome food fellas. And the owners couldn't be nicer. Please show these guys your support! Prices were excellent as well!!

My husband and I decided to try Bull Daddy's Restaurant for the first time last night. The hostess greeted us and we were seated quickly. The place was larger than we expected. He opted to try the catfish and I decided on a burger called 'The General'. The catfish was fried and it came standard with fries & coleslaw. He was given the option to change the sides, but he wanted the fish and chips. He said the fish was good and it was a nice size portion. The burger was a hand pressed beef burger topped with smoked pulled pork & my choice of bbq sauce (I wanted honey bbq). My burger was cooked to my specification, medium well, I would say it cooked closer to medium. Although it was very good. The pulled pork is boston butt, great flavor, but fatty, they do not remove the fat when they shred it. I would have given the food a 5 star rating. The biggest issue for the experience was the wait time. We ordered our food & waited approximately 40-45 minutes for it to arrive. The table beside us waited about an hour. They ordered when we did & we had already completed eating our meal before their food arrived... The place was larger than expected. The restaurant was clean. The service was friendly. The food was good. The wait was ridiculously long and they weren't busy. I would definitely try it again, but not if I were in a hurry or on a time crunch!

Driving home from the beach with hungry kids and we spot Bull Daddys. I figured we would give it a try and I'm so glad we did! The atmosphere was upbeat, fun and everyone was so friendly! Our waitress, Amy was great...she had excellent menu knowledge, suggested her favorites and even helped the kids decide on the chicken tenders. Brittany also helped out with the kiddos, she showed them to the game area while they waited for food and after dinner let us know they had ice cream cookie sandwiches, the kids loved them of course! We hung out and played a few games of pool before we got back on the road. Will, the manager came over and asked us how everything was, chatted with my husband about the awesome ribs and then opened up the table for a free game of pool. We had the best experience and will definitely be back! Its not often we go into a restaurant with 6 kids and have the staff acknowledge them and go out of their way to talk to them and help them have a good time. We were very impressed! You guys are doing a great job! Thank you again!!! O my kids thought it was awesome that Will gave them all a fist pump on the way out!! Great food! Great staff!! Great place!!!

Yummy, unique comfort food. Nice selection of craft beers. Incredibly friendly service delivered with a smile. Owner is almost always on site and eager to please. Rib Monday serves delicious and inexpensive fall-off-the-bone goodness. Do yourself a favor and visit this place, you won't be disappointed.

AMAZING! It’s that simple. Such sweet people! Brittany was our server and she was really great, she went above and beyond for us! We are visiting from out of town and plan to come back just to eat here! The food was so good! And an even better atmosphere!
