Hangzhou

Hangzhou, the capital of China’s Zhejiang province, is the southern terminus of the ancient Grand Canal waterway, which originates in Beijing. Its West Lake, celebrated by poets and artists since the 9th century, encompasses islands (reachable by boat), temples, pavilions, gardens and arched bridges. On its south bank is 5-story Leifeng Pagoda, a modern reconstruction of a structure built in 975 A.D.

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Lingyin Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Hangzhou dating back to 328 CE, has been rebuilt multiple times due to damage from fires and warfare. The temple is a fascinating blend of ancient tradition and modernity, with millennial-pink cafes and modern monuments juxtaposed against its historic stone carvings. Visitors can embark on a tour of Hangzhou that includes a cruise on the lake, followed by a visit to Lingyin Temple for an immersive experience in Chinese Buddhism.
Breathtaking ancient temple! Founded in 326AD with 1,700 years of history, one of China's ten most famous Buddhist temples. Nestled in lush Wulin Mountains, truly lives up to "Temple of the Soul's Retreat". Impressive entrance hall and heavenly king statues. Deeply serene experience!

The place is nice but very busy. I enjoyed the climb — about 350 meters up to reach the temple at the top. The view and atmosphere are beautiful, but it’s quite touristic. There’s also a cable car if you prefer not to walk. It’s a bit expensive, yet still a very spiritual experience, though there were too many people for my taste.
Angela — Google review
Before coming to Hangzhou, I did a very good research about the place and everyone said that I need to see this place. I loved the architecture of the temple. The guide explained to us lots of details we needed to know. This temple has the biggest gold coated (33 kgs of gold) buddah. It was nice to see how people worship at this temple. The place can be very crowded.
Antoun B — Google review
Historic place, ancient temple with many idols, Buddha, and many other saints and monks. It's a very divine place, crowded with a lot of people, and features clean, organized maintenance. Worth visiting to get blessings from the divine powers.
Bala G — Google review
The entire area is huge and you can take whole day to visit all the temples and peaks. Took a cab to the place, but you need to alight at the carpark outside and walk about 10min to the entrance. The road to the place was jammed too. The short taxi ride from Yue temple took more than 30min. There are also many interesting shop on the way to the Lingyin temple. There are also many restaurants at the main entrance. The shade and breezy wind help to make the visit more enjoyable in summer. Spent about 1-2hours only manage to visit Lingyin temple only. This temple alone is big.

We took the metro Line 1 from Wulin Square and the bus or you can book taxi go to here. A spacious pagoda with many stone Budda on the moutain

Vast, expansive temple, crowded over the weekend, particularly in the main hall where a ceremony was taking place.

If you are into Buddhism, this is the place to go. I have never seen such a huge Buddha statue carved out of wood. I think it’s also the biggest one globally. It lies within the national park and you have to buy an extra ticket for it

Nature & Parks
Xixi National Wetland Park, often referred to as the "kidney of Hangzhou" due to its cleansing properties, is a picturesque destination located just a 20-minute drive from West Lake. This expansive park boasts an array of ponds, lakes, swamps, and villages dating back to the Han dynasty. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vivid cultural heritage and witness ancient crafts such as silk farming and book engraving.
Pleasant park with lots of walking paths. Plenty of small restaurants within the park boundary. We stayed overnight at a charming hotel called the Xixi Fan Yuan Hotel (凡云酒店) which was walking distance to a museum, a “walking street” with eateries and arts and craft shops.

It's a very big natural park with greenery & colors. Different types of Trees, Flowers, mini streams pond available. Also mini Tulip festival happens in April. Avery good place to pass a day with Family & kids. Amazing place.

Xixi national werland Park is really a treasure, it’s a very big park so I walked a lot. The place is tranquil and beautiful and it seems to go back in time. I had fun searching for shrines, little houses and bridges 🌳🦋

Nice big wetland with canals for boat rides but unfortunately the guides on the boats don’t speak any English. Also where are all the birds? A wetland park like this should be teeming with water birds, but all I have seen so far is one duck and one Herron. Plenty of places to buy food and drinks at the boat piers. Finally if you have difficulty walking the paving of the footpaths is quite uneven.
Chris P — Google review
It is a local park and attraction. CNY 80 entrance fee, which I thought is a bit high. There isn’t much to see. The staff at the information counter isn’t too helpful and patient. Maybe it is nicer during spring time when flower blossom.

A city park in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. It is full of lakes, ponds, streams and greenery. A lovely place to walk and there is a lot of wildlife there, despite what some reviews say. I saw invertebrates, amphibians, birds, fish, and one mammal (a bat) in the space of about 3 hours. There are also plenty of food vendors, shops, and some museums and art exhibitions. Entry to the park is free, but the boat trips, hot air balloon, and Gao's mansion all cost, I think. Well worth a visit if you are in or near Hangzhou.
James C — Google review
Top ❤️. One of the top places in all China ❤️. Worth the travel, must visit during a trip in East China, for a well-preserved wetland scenery, animals and plants, temples and traditional buildings 😊✨👍
Xavier L — Google review
What a beautiful wetland park, and the ticket is free. The scenic area is very large. We stayed at the Sheraton Hotel next to it and spent 6 days visiting the park. We took a walk in the park every morning. It was full of green trees, birds and flowers. It was a pity that there was too little tourist content available on Google Maps. Basically, there was no information on this map. I hope foreign tourists will download local maps. Hangzhou has a lot of food and attractions.

Pagoda
Leifeng Pagoda, originally constructed in 975 A.D., is a five-story tower with eight sides located on Hangzhou's Sunset Hill, south of the West Lake. The pagoda collapsed in 1924 but was rebuilt in 2002. The area around the lake features ancient pavilions and pagodas such as Pagoda of Six Harmonies and Pagoda Baochu, offering pleasant tea rooms for relaxation.
Foreigners bring passport to purchase tickets. Grand and Beautiful rebuild. The old pagoda was burned and robbed by the pirates of neighbouring country and collapse. Which the remains are within the rebuild pagoda. Closes at 7pm. Check with staffs.

There is an elevator to make your hike sweat-less. Must visit if you are in hangzhou! It’s big and chill garden that you can take photo. Important tips: girl !don’t wear overalls cause they only have squatting toilet and bring tissue with you cause you need to pay for the toilet paper

About a 5-10min walk from the entrance of 苏堤. Will pass by a Starbuck and a Chinese restaurant. Entrance fee to the tower is CNY40 per person. Going up the first level is the remains of the old tower. The stairs to the 2nd floor is on the left of the tower when you go up stairs toward the tower. From the 2nd floor you can take lift of stair up the tower. There is long queue for the lift, and the lift does not go to the top floor. You will still need to take the stairs for to the top floor. The view at the top is good, but a little crowded even on weekday. You get an all round view of West Lake and it’s breezy. Went on summer, so was especially nice to take a short break to enjoy the view and cool down.

The view from up here was spectacular. Each step towards the top of the pagoda transforms you into a wiser human being. You learn that when you walk, you will be tired. When you sit, you will get bored.

This is a must-visit place in Hangzhou. It is at West Lake area. We were able to go despite the traffic around West Lake that day. It was a holiday when we did our tour and there were a lot of visitors- local and tourists alike. Good thing we decided to go. It is a beautiful place and the walk up was not that tiring. It has a long escalator from the bottom to the base of the pagoda then an elevator/ lift going up to the top. The view from above is breathtaking. You can see the whole West Lake area from there. The walls depict the ancient art of China. The ceiling has a beautiful design too. Overall it was worth the climb 😊

Qinghefang, a charming pedestrian street in Hangzhou, offers a taste of the city's rich history and traditional craftsmanship. The street is lined with shops where artisans demonstrate their skills, such as playing bamboo flutes or knitting sweaters. This bustling commercial area was once near the imperial palace during the Southern Song Dynasty and retains its traditional architecture from the late Qing Dynasty. Visitors can explore traditional shops, teahouses, and restaurants while immersing themselves in the city's past.
Rainy October. The steam coming from the spa would have been so good. So many concept stores where you can buy travel souvenirs. Bought rice wine and some edible floral tea. Also, presence of public toilet is a plus!

When you climb to the high observation deck, you can see the whole street stretching out, with sturdy old buildings, mossy tiled roofs and impressive traditional architecture. Walking around the small streets, I saw many shops selling souvenirs and specialty cakes, suitable for buying gifts or trying local dishes. The atmosphere here is both bustling and nostalgic, making me feel like I've entered an old but still vibrant era.

(Translated by Google) The long stone-paved street, lined with rows of well-preserved old wooden houses, creates a completely different atmosphere from the modern part of the city. There are many shops selling Longjing tea, traditional Chinese medicine, handicrafts and local specialties on the street. What I find interesting is that there are also long-standing restaurants with traditional dishes to try on the spot. In the evening, when the lights come on, the street becomes bustling but still retains its ancient features. However, because it is a famous tourist destination, it is quite crowded, especially on weekends, and the prices are somewhat higher than usual. For me, Qinghefang is a place worth visiting to feel the atmosphere of the old Chinese town, take pictures and enjoy some typical dishes, but you should not expect too much from shopping.

Dreaming of Tiger Spring at Hupao Valley, also known as Running Tiger Spring (Hupaomengquan), is a renowned spring located just south of West Lake. Legend has it that the spring was discovered by a monk who dreamt he would be led to water by two tigers during a drought in AD 819. The area features a scenic forest park and a temple dating back to the 9th century, offering visitors an escape into nature.
World's third best spring, according to past Emperor of China. There are several JiGong temples inside so if you're a believer, do visit. Spend an hour here and then go over to the nearby liuhe pagoda or vice versa.

(Translated by Google) Hupao Spring is located in the Huichan Temple in the Hupao Scenic Area at the foot of the White Crane Peak of Daci Mountain, southwest of the West Lake in Hangzhou. It is about 5 kilometers away from the city center and is known as the "third best spring in the world". According to legend, in the 14th year of the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty, a monk named Xingkong traveled here and saw that the environment at the foot of the White Crane Peak of Daci Mountain was quiet and suitable for self-cultivation. When he built a temple here, he was troubled by the lack of water nearby. With the help of his disciples Dahu and Erhu, the two disciples transformed themselves into tigers and moved the Tongzi Spring in the West Lake to this place, hence the name "Hupao Spring". It is the best place for Hangzhou people to drink tea and relax, and is one of the "Top Ten Tourist Attractions in the New West Lake" in Hangzhou. According to legend, during the Tang Dynasty, the monk Xingkong came here to spread Buddhism. Due to the lack of water, he was about to leave, but was enlightened by a god in his dream. Two tigers transformed from Nanyue fairy children dug the ground on the mountain to make a spring, so Daci Dinghui Zen Temple was built next to the spring site. Master Jigong passed away in Hupao Temple. There are five reliefs in the temple, which are images of Jigong's life: Jigong Fighting Crickets, Carrying Wood from Ancient Well, Legend of Feilai Peak and Crazy Monk Sweeping Qin, which record the main deeds of Master Jigong. Because there was no water source nearby, he was about to move elsewhere. One night, he suddenly dreamed of a god telling him: "There is a Tongzi Spring in Nanyue. Louwailou is a renowned restaurant in Hangzhou, known for its superb authentic Hangzhou cuisine. Established in 1848, it has a rich history and is highly popular among locals. The restaurant's specialties include West Lake Fish in Vinegar Gravy, Fried Shrimps with Longjing Tea, and the Beggar's Chicken. While the food is generally considered good but not exceptional, the pleasant setting and efficient service make it worth a visit despite the higher prices.
As a solo traveler, I appreciated that they totally embraced this fact… Atmosphere is lively and buzzing, ordering and payment is simple with QR scanning. The signature dish is Vinegar Fish, which I truly enjoyed., fish is on a sweet tone. The beef dish was delicious too, tender and well flavored. Another of their signature is Beggar Chicken, which I did not ordered as it’s a whole big chicken. Situated within West Lake vicinity, it was pleasant that after lunch you can take a leisure stroll along the lake… enjoyable…

This place was famous for renown scholars to have parties with the best water views in front. The foods they ate also became legendary to pass on. Once it was specifically used to entertain foreign dignitaries. However, after the commercialism took over, it would have being losing all that genuineness. The building is a total rebuild with maximisation of floor areas & the foods are no better than any ordinary ones. So don’t expect any legendary tastes any more, it now only serves best to the common tourists.

State-owned restaurant with historical significance. First off, I would like to address that the food here is not the best tasting. On our way there, the driver asked where we were from. I replied, "I was actually born in Hangzhou." To his surprise, he exclaimed, "Why would you eat at Louwailou? That place is for tourists!" Although I am technically a native, I left the city for the U.S. at the age of 3 and a half and don't have much recollection of it. Ironically, I'm a native tourist. The reaction of the driver shows that Hangzhou people wouldn't choose to eat here even if they can foot the pricey bill. People who are coming here to purely enjoy another cuisine would probably be disappointed by what they are served. The restaurant dates back over 150 years, back in the dynastic periods of Chinese history. It served important officials and diplomats from across the world. When we went to eat, we were enjoying an experience that connects to a piece of fascinating history. The restaurant is state-owned and the decor contains grandiose decor mixed with meticulous antiques. When we went, there was hardly any wait time, even though cars were crowded outside and people were packed.

(Translated by Google) It really lives up to its name. It's best to go there around 11 o'clock, otherwise you'll definitely have to wait in line around 11:30. Coral shrimp, tea-flavored chicken, green bean puree, mapo tofu, several of the dishes recommended by everyone are quite delicious. My favorite is tea-flavored chicken and green bean puree. Dongpo pork tastes good, but the color seems a bit off. When I ordered the coral shrimp, I ordered the prawns. As a result, the cost suddenly went up. I guess the taste of the prawns will not be bad. Mapo Tofu is quite affordable, ¥3.00 a bowl. In fact, if you order a bowl of rice and one Mapo Tofu, it seems to be pretty good. The takeaway also comes with tea - but I think the store clerk will be rude to me.

Hotel
Grand Hyatt Hangzhou is a luxurious lakefront hotel located beside the stunning West Lake in Eastern China. The hotel offers 390 rooms spread over 8 floors, providing modern comforts and elegant interiors. Guests can enjoy a range of amenities including a spa, gym, indoor pool, and seven bars and restaurants. The 24-hour fitness center is well-equipped with cardio and strength training machines.
If you’re planning for a trip to Hangzhou, I’d recommend staying at the Grand Hyatt Hangzhou! The hotel’s location is unbeatable, sitting right on the east side of Xi Hu (West Lake), with sweeping views from my room and a rooftop patio that offers a front-row seat to the lake's beauty. The peaceful atmosphere and natural surroundings were the perfect backdrop to relax and unwind. I also loved the indoor swimming pool, which is bathed in natural light and kept at a perfect temperature—ideal for a dip no matter the season. It’s a little oasis in the middle of the city. The breakfast spread was fantastic, with an expansive selection ranging from freshly baked pastries to local specialties and a variety of fresh fruits. The hotel also offers a range of dining options, from steakhouse to a Michelin Guide-listed Chinese restaurant. And there’s even a mall right next door, making it extremely convenient to shop and grab a bite! If you’re visiting Hangzhou, this hotel is the perfect place to stay for comfort and convenience, offering a luxurious experience with world-class amenities and breathtaking views of West Lake, all with an impeccable service.

Pleasant rooms with decent to good service. I had a lovely view of the west lake from the 8th floor and enjoyed the gym on the second floor as well. The gym is a bit small but has everything you need to get a full workout Only negative experience that occurred was my room not being ready upon check in. I requested early check in but the room was still being cleaned. I wasn’t able to get my room until about 5PM which is 2 hours past regular check in time Location is top tier as you can browse the street stalls right outside and you’re conveniently located right next to a shopping district with plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Breakfast food was very diverse but I felt the food wasn’t very noteworthy. Lounges were great and the folks there were very pleasant. I enjoyed their small selection of beers, wines, finger foods, and tea. The space itself is a bit small so during peak hours it can get busy Overall a very enjoyable stay minus the late checking experience.

Good location next to the lake and shopping mall, the grand lounge something offers free breakfast (substantial) and free afternoon tea if you book the right kind of room. The Nespresso professional coffee machine was very good. It makes better micro foam than most normal coffee shops. The hotel feels a bit dated and the plumbing could be improved, but not a major issue.

The rooms with the lake view are beautiful. Interior feels updated and clean. Club lounge food is decent, not the fanciest but sufficient for a dinner substitute and a filling breakfast. Location is very convenient - next to a huge shopping area and the lake side. A thank you to Rona who was very helpful during check in. She was very detail-oriented, ensuring that me and my family would have a good setup in terms of room proximity and club lounge usage. She even made sure we got a room with a more centered view of the lake. We have Hyatt Globalist status and she proactively communicated the benefits to us to ensure we could make full use of them.

We had a very positive experience at Grand Hyatt Hangzhou. I would like to especially thank Rona Bao, who went above and beyond to make our stay pleasant. Our flight was delayed, and we arrived at the hotel close to 3 a.m. To our surprise, the front desk had already prepared all the check-in documents, and the process was completed within five minutes. They even arranged a room near the elevator so we could rest as soon as possible. The hotel’s location is excellent—West Lake is right in front, and the shopping district is just behind the hotel, offering everything we need. It’s very relaxing to enjoy a drink in the lobby. Breakfast was good, with a nice mix of Chinese and Western options.
Overall, we had a great stay and will definitely return.

Wonderful place! The breakfast is excellent, and there are lovely Italian and Chinese restaurants by the lake, along with a high-end market nearby.

Restaurant
Sawasdee Thai Restaurant offers an inviting ambiance reminiscent of a charming resort in Thailand. Their menu features an extensive selection of authentic Thai cuisine, including popular dishes like tom yum, green mango salad, and various curries. Guests can also savor traditional Thai beverages, with the imported coconut being highly recommended to complement the bold flavors of their cuisine.
If you are looking for good Thai in Hangzhou, definitely go! Delicious Thai dishes!

After scanning through reviews on tripadvisor and Google maps, this thai restaurant have a lot of positive reviews. Because of the reviews, i went there. To my surprise, i was so disappointed in the service, taste, and quality. I ordered papaya salad, three flavors fried fish, and a vegetable plate of watercress stir fry. For dessert, we have a coconut sticky rice with mango. For drinks we have fresh coconut imported from Thailand as we were told by the server. As far taste and quality, the papaya salad is good but other countries like usa offers better authentic thai. The three flavors fish is mix feeling. I can't determine if it is good or bad. The stir fry watercress was good. As far as dessert, i think the chef went on a holiday. We waited so long until we decided it not worth. As far as recommendation, i strongly disagree with the positive reviews. I feel like the reviewers never tasted thai foods before. The foods here is average at best. As for the price, i paid 438 rmb for a lunch for 2. It is quite overpriced for an average or below food taste where a street food is superior

It's close enough to Thai but not quite. It's located in the Wyndham hotel on the second floor.

(Translated by Google) Of all the restaurants in Hangzhou, this must be my favorite. Anytime is an ideal place to go. I've been there with friends, family, lovers, and colleagues, and it's been a pleasure every time. The staff are warm, friendly and helpful, always serving guests with a smile. The restaurant has a romantic atmosphere, suitable background music, unique design and tea sets, and furniture decoration all exude a strong Thai style. Next, of course, we have to talk about the dishes, which are really full of praise. Every dish is carefully prepared and plated, and the flavors and combinations of each dish are perfectly blended (completely different from Chinese copycat Thai restaurants). Highly recommend this restaurant. If you like Thai food and are willing to pay a little more for its attentive service, convenient location, rich atmosphere, pure taste, and a little more money (more expensive than other Thai restaurants in Hangzhou), then this is definitely an ideal place.
