Natural History Museums
Immerse yourself in the captivating blend of art and history at Museo Popol Vuh, located within the Universidad Francisco Marroquin. This modern museum houses a remarkable collection of Guatemalan and ancient Mayan artifacts, including pre-Columbian ceramics, sculptures, textiles, and colonial art. Visitors can gain valuable insights into Guatemala's cultural heritage through exhibits that showcase the fusion of European and indigenous artistic traditions.
Amazing museum slowly taking you through the years of Guatemalan history. Tickets were around £4 each. Campus is amazing!

Small 8 room museum worth a visit if you’re in the area. I would not go out of my way for it if it was far away from my hotel. I walked from courtyard Marriott and took an uber back. It’s maintained and kept by the university and they charge 60 quetzales for non locals if you want to take pictures inside.
Will M — Google review
We really enjoy seeing museums when we travel. This is a small museum and you can easily walk through in under an hour. It’s well done, but there is a limited amount of pieces. Also, the descriptions don’t have dates, which would be a welcome addition. Entry is 45 Quetzal.
Ted E — Google review
It was OK but to be honest, I was expecting to see more for 45q, if you already know some about the mayan culture and have traveled to other parts of Guatemala, you won't be learning anything new but it's still a nice site to visit of you want to kill a half day.

Highly recommended. An interesting place with full of artefacts, worth it to explore. Modern university building. Staff is very helpful and friendly.

Great place to find momentos and gifts. There are also lots of vendors of local produce , spices, and meats. Check out the restaurants inside too!

This was a blast. If you want great Guatemalan gifts and items at great prices this is the place. I dropped a ton of money here but walked away with lots of bags and a huge smile. Great experience.
Thal C — Google review
Great place to find everything you need in the heart of the city. Easy to get around and easy to find the food or the goods you are looking for. Friendly and helpful vendors everywhere.
M B — Google review
The Mercado Central is one of the best places to experience authentic local life. It’s a mix of vibrant colors, delicious smells, and the hustle and bustle of daily Guatemalan culture. You can find everything here, fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, meats, flowers, clothing, handicrafts, and small food stalls serving traditional meals at great prices. What makes it special is the atmosphere: vendors calling out their products, families shopping for the week, and travelers exploring hidden corners of the market. The food stalls are a highlight, homemade dishes that taste like they came straight from someone’s kitchen, often much cheaper (and tastier) than restaurants. It can feel a little chaotic at first because of the crowds and narrow aisles, but that’s part of the experience. Bring cash, be ready to bargain a little, and keep an eye on your belongings as you would in any busy market. Overall, Mercado Central is a must-visit if you want to connect with local culture and flavors. It’s not just a place to shop, it’s an experience.

The Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena is a captivating cultural history museum located in Guatemala City, nestled within the grounds of Francisco Marroquín University. This remarkable institution showcases an extensive collection of traditional Guatemalan clothing, textiles, and ceramics that highlight the rich heritage of Mayan culture. The museum's architecture is inspired by a Mayan huipil, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors.
This place in guatemala has variety of Mayan customs and dresses. Is beautiful. It has beautiful art and is full of vivid traditional expositions. Every tourist should go and not miss.

One of the top museums in Guatemala City—don’t miss it! Easy to access and very secure since it’s inside a private university. Gallery #7 was a standout, showcasing stunning watercolor portraits by Carmen Lind Pettersen of Indigenous Guatemalan women and their traditional dress. Her work is absolutely captivating. A powerful blend of art, culture, and history—go see it.

Amazing experience visiting the Ixchel mueseo. We went with limited time and only spent an hour there but felt like we could’ve easily spent hours perusing through the halls. Would love to come back. We brought our 8 month old and she was pleasantly entertained with all of the art.

A fantastic museum, and one of the best textile museums I've ever visited. It's a must-see when you're in G City. Tip: start with the video room, and the rest will follow naturally.

Lovely museum with lots of information and especially clothing of the Mayan people. Entrance costs 45 quetzales. You need ID to get through the security gate to the complex. The gift shop is fantastic and it’s the only place I found in Guatemala that sells the worry dolls!

I love going to museums, especially when it’s about a different culture that I am from 😊 the museum is not that big but it’s definitely worth going! You can see so many interesting things, such as traditional clothes that was worn back in the day, pottery, paintings, etc. They also have a small souvenir shop in the museum, which had very reasonable prices. Staff was super friendly and willing to help whenever we asked questions.

The Palacio Nacional de la Cultura, also known as the National Palace of Culture, is an iconic and ornate building in Guatemala City. It houses a museum showcasing Guatemalan artwork, culture, and history. Situated on the north side of the Plaza de la Constitucion, it was built between 1936 and 1943 by prisoners under the orders of General Jorge Ubico.
Wouldn't say it's an absolute must-see on a visit to Guatemala, but may as well visit if you're staying in Guatemala City already (seeing as there aren't many tourist attractions in the city). Nice enough, the guide explained well the history of the palace and its architecture. Tried to follow with my intermediate level Spanish, I think they also do some tours in English but not certain. Visit is only via the tour, no need to book. They asked for identification document to register for the tour on arrival, quite possibly a photocopy is enough. Free for citizens, reasonable entry price for foreigners.
Joseph M — Google review
During our visit to Guatemala City, my partner and I visited the National Palace of Culture on April 23, 2025. It was originally the National Palace of the Republic of Guatemala. It is an emblematic building for the Guatemalan people. The National Palace of Culture of Guatemala, also known as the "Guacamolón" or "Green Palace," offers guided tours led by specialized guides. Our guide was very informative and knowledgeable about the history of the Palace. Tours are available in Spanish, English, and German, and are free for Guatemalans, while admission costs Q40 for foreigners. It was built from 1939 to 1943 on the instructions of General Jorge Ubico Castañeda, who governed the country from 1931 to 1944. It served as the seat of government. It is strongly influenced by a variety of architectural styles. The National Palace of Culture is the seat of the President of Guatemala and houses a museum. The building has 340 rooms, 780 doors, 386 windows, 55 stained-glass windows, 1,000 balconies, and 9 elevators. Guided tours allow you to explore the palace's history and architecture, including murals such as " El Choque." Visiting hours are Monday through Friday: 9:30 – 10:00 – 11:00 – 12:00 2:00 – 3:00 – 4:00 PM. It's well worth a visit.

Very Live is an amazing spot that beautifully showcases Guatemalan culture. The vibrant atmosphere, straight-forward presentation, and authentic touch make it a must-visit. From the lively music to the cultural displays, it’s an enriching experience. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to explore the true essence of Guatemala!

You have to go on a guided tour, you can not walk it by yourself. It was so beautiful. You get to learn about the history. Back to the ancestors. And how guatemala was formed. I loved the architecture everything to it. It truly is unique. You can get a lot of pictures here. I went in one of the first tours here.
Carlos T — Google review
The architecture inside and outside are amazing. There are murals by Diego Rivera inside and the whole palace a contains history, romance and culture. This has been the government headquarters since 1940…
Mynor A — Google review
One of the most beautiful historical places in Guatemala City. Plentiful with architectural features made with Guatemalan hands using local resources. There are a lot of historical details that the guides happily will provide you.
Danny H — Google review
A must-visit in the heart of Guatemala's Centro. Free for locals/citizens, a small fee for foreigners. Depending on the time of day, the free guided tour could be every half or every hour in between. Not sure if there was a guided tour in English but we went with the Spanish one. My partner didn't understand a thing but I got by somehow with my low intermediate Spanish comprehension. Very detailed explanations of history and architecture. The palace is well kept and truly is a gem 💎 do NOT miss this on your visit in GUA!!

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Guatemala City, Zoológico La Aurora has been captivating visitors since its establishment in 1924. This enchanting zoo spans 14 acres of lush gardens and is home to over 100 species of both native and exotic animals, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and families alike. Guests can explore diverse habitats that include the African savanna, Asian subcontinent, Mesoamerican tropics, and even a charming farm area.
We went with our 3 and 1 year old and loved it. We didn’t even see it all. My 3 year old loved how there was a giant play area when you enter (though it could use a little love). There were peacocks roaming free which was cool. The first few exhibits were the African safari and it was so cool how they kept the animals together instead of separate. They had a gift shop with lots of hats which came in handy for the sun - I’ve continued to wear mine the whole trip. There was a splash pad that the kids loved to play in (but it’s a little slippery so be careful). Value was amazing compared to us zoos. Lots of food to choose from too.

Was not expecting much, and I am not a zoo lover. I was pleasantly surprised. 1- very clean. 2- lots of animals. 3- the animals mostly looked healthy and well taken care of. Overall, one of the nicest zoos we've been to.
Raoul G — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is hands down the best zoo I have ever been to in my life, and I’ve visited quite a few over the years. There is an incredible variety of animals and exhibits, and the layout makes it easy to explore everything at your own pace. The zoo is exceptionally clean and well-maintained, which really enhances the overall experience and shows how much they care about the animals and visitors alike. One of the things I appreciated most was how well-organized everything was—maps, signage, and pathways all made it simple to find your way around and ensure you don’t miss any highlights. There’s so much to do and see, from interactive exhibits to animal feedings and shows, making it a fantastic day out for families, friends, or even solo visitors. I would definitely recommend setting aside at least 4 hours if you want to see everything comfortably and really enjoy the full experience. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, always happy to answer questions or share interesting facts about the animals. Overall, this zoo exceeded all my expectations. It’s a perfect destination for anyone looking for a fun, educational, and well-organized outing. I’ll definitely be returning soon!
Justin V — Google review
❤️ It’s not a huge zoo compared to some In the US, but it is well designed, walkable and great for kids. The trees create a cool canopy for a lovely stroll. Some new exhibits are being constructed so I only expect it to get better!!
Needa L — Google review
One of the beautiful zoos I ever been, is not so big but there are a lot of animals and it’s so practical and convenient..! Before you enter to the zoo there are several restaurants with accessible prices and big are to seat, the toilets are clean, and the zoo is very clean and the animals looks very groomed. We felt very safe in the zoo. Thanks..!
Guy S — Google review
Very cool place, so many animals to see. I loved the snake exhibit. There was a little train that gave kids a ride, only thing is that I would like for it to go further into the zoo.

The place is nice, you have the chance to watch different species from all over the world. As a recommendation. If you purchase online tickets, there is no special line to enter

Guatemalan restaurant
Restaurante Flor De Lis offers a unique dining experience in Guatemala, located at Casa del Aguila Cultural Center. Chef Diego Telles creates inventive Guatemalan dishes inspired by the Popol Vuh, using minimal ingredients to craft visually appealing and flavorful creations. The menu features culinary gems like mushroom tartare smore, frog leg and ant pate stuffed taco, and sweet tomato with creamy cheese and balsamic vinegar.
The food and service at this restaurant was so good I have never had an experience like it. I really enjoyed learning the different stories from the Popolvu book and going on a gastronomical journey. For the price of this fine dining experience it was worth it and no one left hungry. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Guatemala wanting to have a unique dining experience. Be prepared to be at the restaurant for about 2-3 hours.

We went into this knowing a chefs table w/ wine pairing would be pricey; great price compared to what we would have paid in USA. Dishes were all creative with ingredients, presentation top notch; as well as the story and history as representations of each dish. The wine pairing was excellent

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the best meals I’ve ever had! This restaurant offers an unforgettable dining experience. The food was unique, flavorful, and of outstanding quality—every bite was a delight. The small, cozy setting paired with the personalized service made the meal feel special. It’s clear that attention to detail and passion for great cuisine are at the heart of this place. I will definitely return on my next trip to Guatemala. Highly recommended!
David M — Google review
an amazing experience! The tomato did something to my brain, the ambiance 😘, service, the flavors, it was magical. A lot goes into the sourcing and creation of these courses and as a person who is untrained in the kitchen i wonder how each course is gotten perfect sooo consistently! Incredibly intricate. the music choice was on point, really a great experience. But: for the price im paying i felt like the servers were/are tired of telling the same story to each table. Rushing through it, speaking almost robotically & rehearsed. It took me out of it time and time and I just had to revert to the website. so what was the point of having the waiters do it? Maybe have a carton for each meal with the story? Or have everyone on the same course so it’s told once idk. 2nd: honestly thought deer would be an interesting addition to the menu as it’s so forthcoming in the culture/folk tales etc in general thought the courses were missing a hearty meat element 3rd: booking process is muddy, i whatsapped and barely got an answer, and then emailed and had to manually send information, why not offer a booking website that sends a reminder, confirmation, etc. 4th: it wasn’t clear from the website that the chef’s table would be offered different courses. Honestly thought the price difference came down to the seating, but having scrolled through the qr code website I noticed that it was more than just a seating choice. If i had known maybe we would have gone for that option.
L M — Google review
The best meals I’ve ever had have always been more than just the food. They’ve been an experience. Restaurante Flor De Lis was exactly that. A culinary tour of Guatemala and mythology. There is so much I can say about this place but to start it was fabulous and you shouldn’t think twice about dining here. I found it on the top 50 restaurants website where I had found a fabulous place called Maido in Lima a few years ago which was equally amazing so I knew the references checked out. I didn’t know much about it just that I had one night in Guatemala City and do this was where I wanted to be. It did not didssspoint. The service was exceptional. Shout out to Bianca who was running the whole restaurant and on top of everything from the story telling of each dish to running the food and suggesting drinks. A gracious host. Each dish that arrived was better than the next and the presentation of each one made me want to wonder at the design, reluctant to eat. My favorite dishes were the first which was called Ixmukane, an homage to the sun and the moon and a story about the abuela. The “men of maíz” which exploded with flavor and the “heart of man heart of fish” which was knee buckling delicious… good thing I was sitting down. The cocktails were from the speakeasy bar Balama which is upstairs and each one handcrafted with care. If you are in town for a night or live in this wonderful city and have never been make it your top priority to experience Flor De Lis.

A Captivating Dining Experience at Flor de Lis: A Fusion of Elegance, Superb Service, and Intriguing Culinary Delights During my last trip to Guatemala City, I had the pleasure of visiting Flor de Lis restaurant with my business partners. We made sure to book in advance to secure a dinner reservation, as this establishment can be quite challenging to visit without prior arrangements. The restaurant exudes elegance, and the service provided was truly exceptional. Upon perusing the menu, we were immediately captivated by its intriguing offerings. Each course was accompanied by a detailed explanation from our knowledgeable server, enlightening us about the origins and inspirations behind each delectable dish. It was a delightful journey for our palates, blending flavors from diverse culinary traditions. The ambiance struck a perfect balance between classic elegance and contemporary flair. The stylish decor and modern touches created an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere, enhancing the overall dining experience. However, I must note that the cocktail selection offered was somewhat limited, which surprised me, considering the usual presence of a more extensive mixology menu in such establishments. The same applied to the wine options. Nevertheless, this slight observation did not overshadow the exceptional quality of the food and service. In conclusion, I am confident that I will return in the future to further explore the culinary delights at Flor de Lis. I commend the restaurant for their remarkable dining experience, and at this moment, I am awarding them a well-deserved 5-star rating. However, should the cocktail offerings not improve upon my next visit, I will make the necessary adjustment to reflect my updated evaluation.

I absolutely recommend this restaurant, a must try experience. A journey through the Mayan culture. Every dish is exquisite. A dinner is comprised of 10 set plates. One of our favorite restaurants here in Guatemala! From the moment you are greeted by the staff, to the ambiance and of course, the food! Better food here than NYC itself. Wish I could give it 4.5 stars. I've been here twice with my fiancé. First time we had the surf and turf (filet mignon and lobster), along with some fried calamari and a Reuben sandwich (I was surprised to see a Reuben on the menu and had to test it out). All the food was excellent, with the minor exception being the Reuben, which tasted off (I frequent NY delis so I would know). Nevertheless, a great experience, wonderful service and delightful food. The second time we went, the quality had declined for some reason. The steak wasn't as well seasoned, overall the food had lost its wow-factor and worst of all, they no longer had fried calamari 😞. Nevertheless, still one of the best places to dine in Guatemala city, and I definitely recommend it to any fellow Gringo who finds himself in Guate.

Mercado 24 is a market-driven restaurant located in a split-level space with an open kitchen, offering soulful and playful dishes that are redefining Guatemalan cuisine. Led by Pablo Diaz, who previously worked at Noma Mexico, the restaurant serves innovative creations such as beef tongue with coffee mayonnaise and zapote with mole. The evening menu features a 4-course tasting experience.
We had an exceptionally fun and tasty lunch. Food and service were top notch and the atmosphere chill and low key. If you were just walking past you'd never imagine this is one of the top meals in LATAM. The complete lack of pretension truly makes this a special place to dine. Definitely on our "always eat here" list for Guatemala.

We’ve seen this restaurant on Instagram and TikTok before and on our most recent trip to Guatemala we had the opportunity to finally visit it. From start to finish we had an amazing experience and were lucky to meet the Chef and Owner Pablo as well as the Kitchen Chef Javi. Our server Ronald Villar was an excellent waiter who was always on point. This we what we tried and strongly recommend “TOSTADAS” try them all we had the Aguachile, Pescado ahumado, Lengua, Atún, Cerdo, Gua Baos de Cerdo and also we had the Puyazo con Hongos y Chiles paired with a very Cold Cabro beer. Mercado24 is a must-visit spot in Guatemala City! If you're lucky, Chef Pablo might even greet you at the door. The seafood here is absolutely top-tier - the tuna tostada alone makes the trip worthwhile. I could easily eat a dozen of them! Everything is incredibly fresh and full of flavor. I went during their Sunday Funday event with Redy Chicken, and now I’m eager to come back for their regular menu. Service is exceptional and they bring the best vibes. They play mainly old school salsa music. Can’t recommend enough

Outstandingly delicious! I really enjoyed my lunch here. Ordered 2 tostadas to try them out and had to order a 3rd. (Note: If you’re looking for and missing Dora La Tostadora, it’s here!). My favorites were the crudo (thin sliced raw fish) and the vegetables which were grilled baby corn and brussel sprouts. I also got the shrimp which I didn’t fully understand, it was quite messy with a heavy dose of thick sauce and came with very large shrimps with heads and tails still attached - wasn’t my favorite. Overall though everything was excellent including the lemonade! Warning, it is a bit pricey by Guatemala standards.

A great place for dinner! The prices are mid-range but the service, atmosphere, and food are well worth it! I had such a nice solo dinner here and the staff really worked with me to make sure I was getting what I wanted (since they didn’t speak English and I speak little Spanish)

Steak house
Donde Joselito Steakhouse is a top restaurant in Guatemala known for serving freshly sourced steak. The restaurant offers a cozy ambiance with wooden tables and chairs. Visitors praise the attentive service and high-quality food, particularly highlighting the wagyu steak, mashed potatoes, and grilled vegetables. The staff is accommodating to large groups, ensuring excellent service and flavorful steaks for all guests. Overall, it's considered one of the best dining experiences in Guatemala City by many patrons.
We had an amazing experience at Donde Joselito Steakhouse! Despite not needing a reservation, we were greeted kindly and seated promptly. The service was fantastic from start to finish. We came because of the 11k+ reviews, and it definitely lived up to the hype! We tried the costilla, a cut of beef we’d never had before, and it was tender, juicy, and absolutely delicious. The complimentary bread with three different sauces were a great touch. We were celebrating something special, and the cocktails were perfectly poured. Jorge, the manager, came by to check on us, and we told him everything was perfect! The staff was also super helpful with our limited Spanish. Highly recommend!

The restaurant has a vibe of a bar. The service was prompt. Steaks were cooked properly. It’s not fancy, but the food is delicious. Great deserts and average drinks.

Well.... Just real good steak... Like... The meat itself... the juiciness.... Everything about it was great! The portion from the starters are also really filling! Would love to dine here like... 3 times a week!!

This spot had a 11 gazillion reviews so I had not choice but to take a gander over for their beef selection. I originally was going to get the "house" steak but the manager talked me into splurging on the Wagyu and it didn't disappoint. Came with a house salad, mashed potatoes and dipping sauce. It was more expensive than I thought but Guatemala City is overall expensive in my experience with Central and South America.

This is a must steakhouse !! Every time I am in Guatemala ; I have always return for its great steak , I have tried almost all the cuts and they have never let me down . I felt they have raised the price after Covid but it’s still worth it !! If you are a meat lover , this is the place you will appreciate it .
