Puerto Plata

San Felipe de Puerto Plata is the capital of the Puerto Plata province on the Dominican Republic’s Atlantic north coast. The city is best known for its beaches. Playa Dorada’s lengthy beachfront is backed by resorts and an 18-hole golf course. The city’s old colonial-era center is dominated by the 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe, a Spanish fortress that now houses historical and military artifacts.

Fortaleza de San Felipe is a historic Spanish fortress built in the late 1500s to defend against pirates and invaders. Located on a hill at the Puntilla Del Malecon, it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and protected the entrance to Puerto Plata's seaport. The fort offers fully narrated tours around its grounds, showcasing history displays and old cannons pointing out to sea.
This fort is in San Felipe Park which is a short walk from the cruise ship port. The sidewalk is skinny in places so not accessible for wheelchairs. Once at the park it’s easy walking to get to the fort itself. Who wouldn’t like seeing a Spanish fort dating to the late 1500s which was built to defend against pirates. The fort was completed in 1577. There is a $2 per person fee and you get a headset so you can listen to the story of the fort. My headset didn’t work well. I think it was a bad cable or the audio port. It was fine as the fort is interesting with lots of things to look at and read. Like most of the Dominican, the fort could use money to fix things up. It’s a great place to get photos of the water, beaches and cruise ship port. There are public bathrooms in the fort.
Bill L — Google review
Not only is the first interesting and historically significant, you should go there just for the history alone, but there's a beautiful view and a great breeze off the water to keep things cool and comfortable. It was about 100 pesos and worth the price to get to see the views from the turrets. There is parking and there are public bathrooms too, and souvenir stalls too if you like that kind of thing.
Michelle M — Google review
Well maintain, nice to walk and not feel like a tour is going to ask for a fee or approach you. Beautiful place from puerto plata and full of a lot of potential.
Neil G — Google review
The San Felipe Fort was a stop on our private tour of Puerto Plata. If you’ve been to San Juan and seen the large fort there, this is much smaller, but very similar in age and stone composition. Over 450 years old, it is on a cliff next to ocean so there are plenty of great views. You can also buy tickets to go through it for a half hour tour.

Stopped here on a cruise excursion. Well kept area.
Vonzell L — Google review
It's a beautiful place overlooking the ocean with an awesome history.

Nice site you can easily walk there

This place is really neat. It only cost $1.00 USD to get in and walk around. Nice views of the harbour and sea. Just a nice piece of history to enjoy for about 45 minutes or so. Lots of local peddlers around trying to sell their wares. I love chatting them up and buying a few trinkets.

Playa Dorada is a stunning beach in the Dominican Republic, known for its palm-lined golden sands and crystal-clear waters. It's not just a beach; it's a destination offering luxury and relaxation. The area provides various activities, from kitesurfing to exploring waterfalls at 27 Charcos de Damajagua and snorkeling at Cayo Arena. Visitors can also immerse themselves in local culture by visiting nearby villages, trying Dominican cuisine, or learning about cocoa and coffee plantations.
Excellent ocean swimming on the North coast of Dominican Republic. Mount Isabel de Torres provides protection from hurricanes, we are here during hurricane Melissa, Oct. 2025 and only have yellow flags along the beachfront. Great Beach.
Paul B — Google review
Very nice stretch of beach. There are some coral rocks in some areas, and a lot of seaweed washes up, but they rake it and keep it clean. The beach itself is quiet and stretches for quite a distance and encompasses several resorts.
Dennis S — Google review
We had a really enjoyable day at this beach and would absolutely return, but there are a few things that kept it from being a full five-star experience. What truly stood out was the experience— not just in what was available, but in the people. The beach had a lively, local charm with vendors walking by offering everything from handmade chachkes and sunglasses to snacks, drinks, and even photo ops with animals like parrots and iguanas. It made the beach feel vibrant and alive, and our kids loved the excitement. There were plenty of options for relaxing — cabanas, beach chairs, and umbrellas were available to rent, and a full-service beachfront restaurant was just steps away. While we appreciated the convenience, everything came at an added cost and most of the facilities, including the chairs, cabanas, restrooms, and changing areas, could really use a refresh. They worked, but they were definitely showing their age. The food was okay — nothing to rave about, but good enough to keep us going through a day in the sun. What made the meal more enjoyable was the service. Our favorite waiter, **Christian**, was kind, funny, and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. He really elevated the whole experience. There are also lots of little shops nearby if you want to browse or pick up souvenirs, and the waves were perfect for swimming and playing. Overall, this beach has character, color, and charm — and with a few upgrades, it could easily be five stars.

In December and January the water was quite full of algae. Maybe it’s the season, I don’t know. Not in all the parts it was full with algae, but anyway it was disturbing. So, sometimes we were going to Sosua beach as it was wonderful there….
Alexandra S — Google review
Great beach, not to crowed at the end of july, good for relaxing and enjoy the area.

I recently visited this beautiful white sand beach, and I must say, it's impeccably maintained despite the numerous resorts nearby. Arriving with a tourist group, we were delighted to find a designated area with beach chairs and umbrellas exclusively for tourists. The availability of tap water for a refreshing post-beach bath was a thoughtful touch. Additionally, the convenience of having a restaurant nearby serving snacks and drinks added to the overall enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this beach for a relaxing getaway.
Madhuli P — Google review
Great beach. Water was 85. Food & drinks were good. Fresh water showers to clean up.
Chris K — Google review
Stunning beach that is only accessible for the resorts in the Playa Dorada gated complex. Technically, locals can access it if they enter on the west side of the public beach and walk a couple of kilometers, but that's not an issue for me. Pristince sandy beaches with beautiful warm blue water with waves to jump in. There are kiosks to rent jetskis, parasailing, snorkel tours, etc.

Ocean World Adventure Park in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic is a vibrant attraction offering various animal encounters such as swimming with sharks and dolphins. The north coast area also provides numerous activities like fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing, golfing at Playa Dorada, and more. Visitors can enjoy go-karting at Fun City or explore the historic district of Puerto Plata with its Victorian pink alleyway and Umbrella Street.
I can not say enough good things about this place! We booked this excursion when I was on a cruise with Carnival, and we spent the day at this park. It was absolutely beautiful. There are so many things to do for children little and older. There is a pool, a lagoon, a water obstacle course, shows featuring sharks seals dolphins and you can even snorkel with fish, you can swim with dolphins. The opportunities are endless not to mention the buffet was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this!! They also get amazing photos and videos of whatever encounter you do! Enjoy!!! Sorry for the crazy sentences i am just excited to share! lol

Excellent experience at Ocean World Adventure Park! Amazing Staff in every area (shout out Robin Santos with Guest Services and Yann with the Dolphin Swim). Park is well-maintained, clean and beautiful all around. The Dolphin Swim was super fun, interactive and overall, great experience! I would definitely visit again anytime. Great people, tasty food, nice ambience and spectacular views.
Mario G — Google review
Great time all around. Do the experiences! Yes they cost a bit, but well worth it. And get the pictures too. Again, yes they are expensive but those are awesome memories. Staff was awesome and very friendly, helpful, funny, and personable. Skip the buffet though, totally not worth it. Definitely recommend the dolphin and sea lion experience.
Andrew B — Google review
There was a little misunderstanding at the reception — my husband thought that by paying for the dolphin encounter he would be able to take photos of us, but it turned out that phones were not allowed in the area at all. He was very upset, and the situation could have completely ruined our visit. Thankfully, supervisor Juan L. Rojas stepped in and handled everything with true professionalism, patience, and a sincere smile. Juan L. Rojas turned what could have been a disappointing experience into one of the highlights of our trip. He is a true professional who knows exactly how to treat guests and resolve issues with grace and respect. This is the kind of attitude that makes people want to come back again and again. Thanks to him, we left with wonderful memories, amazing photos, and a deep appreciation for the way he handled the situation. He truly deserves recognition and a well-earned bonus! 🌟

Great place to go if you are in Puarto Plata, just 10min away with taxi from Taino Bay. A bit expensive, if you are coming here as a cruise passenger. Anyhow nice place to relax by man made beach, or use the pools. Day pass includes lunch.
Arnolds H — Google review
Fantastic experience. Martin was a great guide and the trainers were knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and made the experiences so much fun. Dolphins, sea lions, sharks, birds and capybara!
Michelle D — Google review

Jennifer K — Google review
Wow, wow, wow! Fantastic place play and to eat. The food was absolutely top-notch! The buffet is one time through, so fill up the plates! The rice amazing, veggies, fruit...wow! If you want to swim with dolphins, sting rays, sharks, snorkeling with tropical fish, or play at the private beach or water slides! You can also feed the birds and capybara's! So fun, safe, and delicious food and drinks. Johanny was absolutely amazing and so helpful, definitely sit in his section for vip treatment 🥰 The staff is so friendly while also keeping the little ones safe. Highly recommend! They have lockers and showers as well!

The Puerto Plata Cable Car, also known as Teleferico, is the only one of its kind in the Caribbean. It offers a scenic 15-minute ride to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres, where visitors can explore botanical gardens and visit the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. From this vantage point, at 2,600 feet above sea level, guests can take in breathtaking panoramic views of Puerto Plata city and its coastline stretching over 100 kilometers along the Atlantic Ocean.
Definitely worth a visit. We visited it during a Cruise stop. Do to heavy traffic on route and long line for the Cable Cars, could not plan a lot of visits during our stop but glad we made this one. Beautiful views from the top.
T S — Google review
THIS CABLE CAR SERVICE IS CLOSED. Don’t know why it still says it is opened on Google Maps. The people there told that it will not be operational for the next 2.5 years. There is bus service that takes you to the mountains which cost us around 20 USD for one person. The ride is good but you won’t get much time to spend on the mountain near the statue. The price of the souvenir was little high in the stores near the statue.
Neby V — Google review
The place is beautiful, but beware of the famous Tour guides, they tell they work for the park and blah blah, they have uniforms and everything but theyxare not employees they are locals looking to make and extra buck. The machine is been down for a long time. Honestly google the mountain for directions no need of a tour guide. They see you as a tourist and they jacked up the prices. Do not buy in the souvenirs stores they are not worth it.
Neil G — Google review
Still closed. I went to a tourist spot and asked the teller. She advised it’s been closed a year because people don’t want to pay to use the cable car. She said probably for two more years. Her English was good and my Spanish is dreadful but I relayed on what I was told. I drove up to the gate at about 3pm on a Wednesday and took the below photo.

Cable car was not working so we drove to the top Amazing view of the city
Piyush G — Google review
Nice affordable activity to do with your family. Once at the top, there is a spectacular view and you can walk along the paths through the gardens and to the caves and lagoon. I gave 4 stars because the directions to these sites are really not very specific. It took us a while and many wrong turns before we got to the caves 🙃🙃🙃
Murielle V — Google review
Views are amazing if you are driving a rental or coming you dont need any person in a green polo taking you up. You are good with just taking yourself up. At the top there is a hike on the top that takes you around the area to show you the water falls, typical Dominican house of the past, and natural areas as well. Also the shops at the top way over charge like 20+ dollars for things that are worth 3 dollars else where. Always bargain.
Mateo R — Google review
Amazing ride to top! Beautiful tropical area with lots of paths, a traditional kitchen, pond, and observation areas. We spent 2.5 hours exploring the area. A lot cheaper to buy tickets on-site versus with a tour.

Mares restaurant in Puerto Plata is a top-notch dining spot overseen by Chef Rafael Vasquez. The restaurant boasts a brilliant decor and an outdoor garden for patrons to savor their meals and drinks. Specializing in Caribbean fusion cuisine, the menu offers a variety of dishes such as fish with a French twist and sushi with a Caribbean flair. Located next to the beach, Mares is known for its exquisite selection of seafood-based dishes, particularly the fresh fish cooked in coconut sauce.
A tranquil stunning garden is the biggest highlight for this restaurant. The food is also delicious, and clearly very good quality. However the price is quite high for the Dominican. But the wonderful fenced in garden, with its large variety of labelled trees and bushes, to the koi pond the atmosphere trumps anything I have seen in the Dominican at all.

Hidden gem in the the Dominican Republic! This place was amazing. The food was authentic and delicious. Your sitting in the middle of the city but would never know it with such serine scenery. Dont miss it and be sure to visit the art gallery!

Exelent place. Service and food was perfect
Svante S — Google review
The manager, who I think, is also the chef, because he was wearing a white chef's uniform, did not want to let me in the restaurant. I’m a black Canadian, and I was surprised he told me he had no available seats when most of the tables were neither occupied nor reserved. I went there with my wife, who is a Dominican, and lives in Puerto Plata. When he heard me speaking English he realized I was not Dominican, and all the sudden, he had available seats for us. I wanted to leave and spend my money at a restaurant run by the locals, across the street, but my wife wanted to try the food there... It was an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience... I was ashamed with that kind of treatment. The restaurant is also quite expensive, I paid the equivalent of 200 Canadian dollars for the meal without drinks.

Restaurant Le Papillon is a charming and unique dining spot that offers a mix of Caribbean and Dominican-inspired cuisine. The restaurant features an outdoor section, making it an ideal choice for a leisurely lunch in the sunshine. With its rustic nautical design, Le Papillon provides a relaxed tropical atmosphere for fine dining. The small eatery boasts quirky decor including large aquariums and historic artifacts, creating an inviting ambiance.
The best food in the Dominican Republic, and easily one of the best restaurants I've been to in the world (about 30 different countries). Very limited seating so reservations are a must, and the owner/chef Tomas was a great host. Worth the trip, and hope to be back again soon.

Amazing food. Well worth leaving our all inclusive resort to have a meat with chef Tomas! Best meal on this island!
Tyler G — Google review
If you are looking for a meal in Puerto Plata, you have many options. But if you are looking for an experience—an evening so enchanting and welcoming that it will become the highlight of your entire trip—then you have only one choice: Le Papillon. Tucked away from the main tourist thoroughfares, stepping into Le Papillon is like discovering a secret garden. The ambiance is immediately captivating. You walk into a lush, tropical courtyard, softly lit by twinkle lights and lanterns, creating an atmosphere that is both romantic and wonderfully intimate. You're not just entering a restaurant; you're being welcomed into an oasis of tranquility and charm. The menu is a masterful blend of European classics (with a superb Austrian/German influence) and the freshest Caribbean ingredients. Every dish that came to our table was a work of art. The Cordon Bleu was crispy, tender, and impossibly flavorful. The fresh-caught fish of the day was cooked to absolute perfection, flaky and delicate, served with a sauce that was both light and complex. From the appetizers to the decadent dessert, the quality and passion in the kitchen are evident in every single bite. It is, without question, a culinary masterpiece. But what truly elevates Le Papillon from a fantastic restaurant to a cherished, unforgettable memory is the owner, Thomas. From the moment we arrived, Thomas greeted us not as customers, but as old friends. He is the consummate host—a man whose genuine warmth and passion for his craft are palpable. He moves through the garden restaurant with an easy grace, stopping at every table to share a story, offer a recommendation, or simply ensure you are having the time of your life. He doesn't just run a restaurant; he curates an evening of joy for every single person there. His recommendations were spot-on, his attention to detail was flawless, and his infectious enthusiasm made the entire experience feel personal and special. Thomas isn't just the owner; he is the heart and soul of Le Papillon. Do not leave Puerto Plata without spending an evening here. In a world of fleeting and impersonal service, Thomas and his incredible team have created something truly rare. This isn't just dinner. It's a magical experience, a masterclass in hospitality, and the best meal you will have on the island. We are already planning our next trip back, just for another evening at Le Papillon. Thank you, Thomas, for everything. You are, indeed, the best. Rating: ★★★★★ (If I could give it six stars, I would!)
ANGELA S — Google review
My husband and I have celebrated our wedding anniversary at LePapillon for several years now. Every experience never disappoints and I honestly can’t understand ANY negative reviews. The food is always above expectations, and Thomas’ personal touch is definitely noticed. If you really want to experience a special evening out with ALL the trimmings and more…make a RESERVATION and sit back, order the surf and turf, and let Thomas spoil you!

Going to this restaurant is an experience, l've been several times and it seems to be getting better and better, all our entrees and meals were all prepared fresh on the spot. The smoked tuna and salmon was excellent! Our meals were by far probably the best meals we've had to date here on this trip! I do not give this restaurant this rating lightly I'm here for 3 months and go and try 2 restaurants a week and by far it's been the best so far and l'm on my final 3 weeks! Thomas is an excellent chef and also a great guy! It's an experience you will not regret!

The place is beautiful. The patio has old leafy trees and looks like a nice garden. The Dominican breakfast was also very tasty. Hey, mashed potatoes for breakfast, how can you go wrong? The elderly lady and the young guy provide excellent service and just ooze kindness.

Great coffee and service. Our waiter even spoke french when he heard us talking, he was very nice. We didn't get to taste the food but it looked good. I loved the vibe of the place. I wish we discovered it earlier when we were in Puerto Plata.
Tania K — Google review
Overall the service was good. I gave 3 stars only because the two gentlemen excelled in providing customer service by meeting my needs/preferrence. The two gentlemen that served me were very patient and did what they could to satisfy me. Although there were only 2 other guests there (it took a while before I could order) and both my salad and entree were sent back because it was not prepared correctly, I would still be inclined to give 3 stars due to the exceptional customer service provided.

What a pleasant surprise to stumble upon during a quick trip to the Dominican. The food was amazing, our waiter even better. We sat outside on the patio in the rear in attempt to enjoy the weather and the food. I would def. recommend.

This was my second time at Kaffe. I couldn’t wait to get my favorite Chinola drink! As I expected my experience was great. I love the Cuban decor and feel of the place. It’s very clean and home like. I adore the in home setup. It’s really nice to go at anytime of the day. I went with a friend for lunch. We ordered the chinola shake, then chicken croquetas. The croquetas were like eating chicken crab cakes. Soooo delicious. Then I ordered a ceaser wrap with shrimp and my friend ordered the parmesan risotto. I wrap was great, I do prefer less cheese but if you’re a cheese lover you’d be just fine with it. The risotto had excellent flavor, however I know risotto to not have that much broth, or was almost soupy. But that didn’t stop us from enjoying it. We were too full to order dessert, but the crepes look delicious. We ordered another chinola shake to go. Kaffe is definitely a place to go for a nice ambiance and great food and drinks!

Very nice place. Has this homestyle look which I love. You feel like you’re walking into someone’s house. Very peaceful place. Service was very slow but friendly. Prices seemed very fair for the amount of food I ordered. Atmosphere here really gives you that Dominican vibe. I would absolutely return here.

Casita Azul, a charming Victorian-style restaurant located near the Parque Central in Puerto Plata, offers a magical dining experience with its simplistic Caribbean elegance. The quaint and elegant ambiance inside takes you back to a time of civility and fine dining. Meanwhile, the front patio provides a perfect spot to soak in the historic atmosphere while enjoying breakfast or sipping on wine. Its romantic Victorian style adds to its appeal for both travelers and locals.
We had a group of 7 who ate here and wow we are so glad we did. The drinks were great! I had sangria and it was amazing. Food was excellent! The service was amazing. The pastas were to die for. I would highly recommend eating here. We had a very fun night with great food and service. My fiance had a negroni and the lobster risotto. It was fantastic. Thanks for a great evening!

Beautiful restaurant and ambiance right in the heart of Puerto Plata. I went there for a late dinner with my family. My brother had lobster with French fries. I shared the steak and tostones with my sister. I’ve eaten at fancy restaurants in the Dominican Republic and don’t mind paying but getting 6 tostones and like 3 ounces of beef was shocking. The food was tasty though and the service was excellent

The restraunt have a strong vintage athmospere, owner put a lot of effort in small details They cook pretty decently. There is bell on each table to call for a waiter. The AC configured to actually do decent job. Juice drinks have lot of ice in them. They have menu in english. Suggestion to restraunt owner: it would be good to put some indication that this is restraunt, it was not visually appeared as such from the town square

Excellent service, delicious food, in a beautiful Victorian house in Puerto Plata. The eggplant appetizer was really delicious, as was the stuffed ripe plantains. The risotto al fungi with vegetables, and the quinoa salad, were delicious too. The waiters went above and beyond to make our experience unforgettable. Elvis Peralta definitely knows what he is doing, kudos to you!!

Food is very average. Their eggplant dip was one of the best things. Cocktails are good, but expensive as it’s in the tourist place. I ordered risotto and ended up regretting it. I do not think it was worth a $70 meal for two people. I will not be going back here.

One of my best Victorina restaurants. This restaurant is so chic , nice and has so tasty food. I well recommend this restaurant downtown Puerto Plata. The most convenient part is that if you are doing some sightseeing everything is walking distance from the restaurant. The have inside tables with AC and tables by the porch and walk side. The view from outside is very good and you have the Cathedral and the Central Park.

Charros CaribeMex is a must-visit food truck offering the best of Dominican cuisine. It's a culinary gem that provides an authentic and refreshing dining experience, perfect for those looking to savor traditional Latin food in a beachside setting. The restaurant boasts an amazing ambience with beautiful views and excellent service from staff like Francesca. The menu offers fantastic options for everyone, including delicious dishes like chimichangas, surf and turf, ribeye steak, and tacos.
Celebrated 50th birth today on a tour from Canada to Puerto Plata. We had fantastic experience with their service catering to each guest needs. Our group had veg and non veg choices and food was served with meeting our expectations and above. Tim and his team made us feel very special, made birthday arrangements for us. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for any guest visiting puerto plata.

We visited multiple times while we were staying at the marina. Nice poolside tables, great people, excellent service. We fell in love with 3 kittens the owner saved. So cute!! Sampler appetizer and fish and chips were delicious.

Absolutely the BEST - food, hospitality, café con Leche, Dominican cigars. We will be back several more times to try everything. Love the owners, staff and cheers to the chef! Incredible food.

Always an awesome place for lunch. And the best fresh mango margarita I've ever had.

We had a great meal here tonight. The waitress was very nice, we had prompt service, and even though she was scared of my dog (hes big, but very friendly) she allowed us to sit at one of their outside tables with him. The place was very clean, and the food was delicious!!!

The food was pretty good, some items lacked flavor, but the chips and pico was excellent. The service was good and at the time we went there were no other people.

Good food and drinks. We went so that we could lounge by the pool, have food/cocktails AND it was very dog friendly! The staff were very responsive and quick even though we were out by the pool the whole time. The pool was warm and deep, but still refreshing!

Charros is such a culinary gem! Ditch your all-inclusive buffets and take a beachside stroll for refreshingly strong drinks and a tasteful fusion of authentic cuisine. We had a party of 8 and were sat at a beautiful table overlooking the moonlit waves through the palms. The service was amazing thanks to Francesca and the other staff. Beyond the the beautiful ambience of the restaurant (there’s also a beautiful pool with cabanas for the day), the true highlight was the delicious cuisine. Everyone ordered a different entree and we were all blown away by the quality and care that was put into the food. My only regret is not taking enough photos of the stunning dishes. Just order everything and you won’t be disappointed — especially the margaritas — make sure to order one.. or 12!
