The Aso Volcano Museum, situated in Kusasenri with a stunning view of the Nakadake crater, provides an educational and insightful experience for those interested in volcanoes. Visitors can observe live footage from cameras inside the crater and explore exhibits on Japanese and global volcanoes. The museum also offers film screenings on eruption exploration and life in Aso. Additionally, guests can enjoy the cafe's free Wi-Fi or dine at the restaurant featuring local ingredients.
very informative museum with a lot of exhibits across 3 floors and frequent video showings of Mt Aso in the theatre. it's all in Japanese with limited English descriptions but we used Google lens. translations on the app we're sufficient.

The museum is old and the exhibits show it. None of the info is in English. However, there are two videos both of which are subtitled in English and a couple other languages. They were interesting. The view from the 3rd floor is wonderful. Not wheelchair accessible that I saw. Lots of parking Make sure you go to the crater/observation area up the road!

Nature is amazing but their attitude of handling horses was so terrible! They kept horses in the restriced wood frame for waiting guests for riding. Let them wait freely while waiting. You guys are living thanks to the horses. The horses deserve better treatment with more freedom! So pathetic horses!

500 yen parking for cars... for a location where most things are closed or look pretty rundown. Save yourself the money, if you don't mind waling a few steps, and park at the viewpoint just above the museum (before the turn) and walk a few steps down. The views and walks around here are stunning. Only major disappointment: the volcano access was closed. Why wasn't this announced here? The handwritten sign was obviously wrong. :( Check the website before you head further up the mountain.

Fhe museum expositions were mostly in Japanese with old information from 1993. It can be fully skipped with the price of 1300 Yen.

When I arrived I was met by a very unwelcoming lady and, despite my efforts to purchase a ticket speaking in Japanese, the lady seemed rude and was rushing me (despite there being nobody else in the queue). The museum itself is large however the exhibits are outdated, dirty, and disorganised. I was the first person to enter the museum on the day I visited, and despite this, the toilets were still dirty from the day before. Generally, if you want to learn about the volcano you'll get the information you need, but don't expect anything amazing. I really hope they clean the place up and modernise the exhibits.

Theme park
Outdoor Activities
Aso Farm Land is a health-focused theme park designed for both adults and kids, offering a wide range of athletic activities, a petting zoo with over 35 adorable animals, and spa services. Nestled in nature at 550m above sea level, the park features attractions like the Forest of Power to energize your body and mind. Additionally, visitors can explore nearby scenic drives such as Akamizu road and Yoshida Line for breathtaking views.
Fantastic place for families with young kids. Travelled there for 2 nights in October. Got the watermelon room which was good fun for the kid. Only thing to note would be slightly limited hot water in the showers so don't fill up the tub or you might end up having to use cold water to finish up. Great big spaces for open ended play and obstacle courses both indoors and outdoors. Lovely little petting zoo with very friendly and cute Capybaras. Decent Food options and a convenient store for that last minute cold beer run. Biggest "inconvenience" is the distance from overnight parking to your accommodation. You basically have to wheel your luggage through 2 elevators, and an underground tunnel to get to the reception. Small price to pay for the range of activities you'll get access to.

Fantastic place for children of all ages. There is a petting zoo and playpark both inside and outside. A really good variety of exciting challenges in a safe environment. Food and drink good for families too. Highly recommended but don't know about the rooms.

Aso Farm Land! I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. TLDR; Good for kids, great onsen, grounds needs maintenance. I stayed two nights in December 2024, arriving the first night with just enough time to navigate the underground passage and labyrinth to check in, get dinner, and to enjoy the hot springs. I left the last day with just enough time to pack up and get breakfast. So really, one full day on the grounds. IMPORTANT: I was also traveling with a preschooler, a middle school kid, and my wife. We all live in Japan. If you do not live in Japan and are just visiting, you have no business visiting Aso Farm Land. If you are not traveling with kids, you have no business visiting Aso Farm Land. If you’re looking for a resort like something in Thailand or Bali, turn back now. The best thing about Aso Farm Land is the extensive hot springs facility. It’s large, not crowded, and varied. You’ve got your usual indoor and outdoor options, plus wacky stuff like wine and olive baths. The worst thing about Aso Farm Land is that the main outdoor attraction for kids, Genki No Mori, is the most run down facility that requires a payment to enter that I have ever seen. It’s a bunch of creative outdoor obstacle courses that involve climbing, sliding and pushing, more than 50, but the paint is faded and peeling, the signage is outdated and broken, and perhaps most surprisingly there were no staff making the rounds to ensure visitors were safe. None! Truly a free-range-parenting hipster’s dream. As others have commented the small petting zoo does have a few unique animals like capybara that hang out in hot springs and flamingoes that are so used to humans they let you walk right up to them. Beavers are the main attraction. Yes, the animals are standing on the pavement, not grass, probably not the most humane. The food is good at the main restaurant. You can grab fresh ingredients and boil your own nabe (Japanese hot pot that is not spicy) right at your table. Everything is fresh and healthy. The entire complex has a health bent that borders on the religious. The stores sell everything from magma clay face packs to walking shoes and drinkable vinegar. The attractions are multiple iterations of the same, admittedly fun, “age testing circuits,” that are variations of a machine that has you slapping or stepping on colored buttons when they light up as fast as you can. You can get your results printed and marvel at how you mashed the button more accurately and more quickly than your family members. We stayed in the Royal Zone and it was fine. The Wifi was in and out. We never used the shower because the hot springs are so great. The facilities were probably at 10% capacity so there was no noise. The rooms were big enough but we live in Japan and are used to Japanese sizes. Most of the other customers were groups of Japanese young kids, Japanese families, Korean tour groups, and some Chinese-speaking tourists. Our kids loved the place. Parents were also amused.

Petting zoo was nice, play area was expensive for what it was and could be cleaner. Restaurants were too expensive to consider eating at considering the apparently quality.

There are 60 outdoor facilities for our whole family to play. We spent 4!hours there. It’s not a holiday or a weekend, so it’s like our won backyard. We love there! We found black salt, and vegan ramens there, too.

I didn't stay at the hotel but visited the Genki no Mori, which is an outdoors athletics for children and parents. Although I visited with my wife, we still enjoyed the athletics because it was really creative and some were challenging for adults and we made rules for ourselves that made it more challenging. When we visited after summer break and during a weekday, there were not many people despite the location being massive. I heard from the staff that during the summer holidays and especially during the obon holiday, the place gets busy. Because there were so few people, we were a bit scared at first, like it was an abandoned theme park. I think if there were more people, we would have rated it higher.

Loved our stay here, it was a great fun for the kids with strawberry picking, petting zoo and an indoor playground. Onsen was beautiful. Staff at the reception were so helpful! (my husband lost a wallet and someone returned it - they made an effort to find his name based on a receipt and contacted him). Also staff at all other places (strawberry farm, restaurant) were super nice and friendly to the kids! Strongly recommended.
Edwin P — Google review
I visited on a day trip to see the obstacle course and was not disappointed. This is such a weird place and so fun. The petting zoo was also great for the kids and I was able to feed a beaver. However, from an animal welfare perspective, the petting zoo needs some work.😥 Most of the attractions have limited English instructions, so be prepared to translate. To get here, there is a daily bus from Kumamoto which you may want to reserve your tickets for depending on what season you visit. I would also advise planning to spend the night so that you can enjoy more areas of the resort/park. I didn't have the time to visit the onsen which looked pretty extensive. Most of the attractions have separate admission tickets.

Asobo no Sato Kugino Roadside Station is a must-visit spot when traveling from Kumamoto city to Aso. It offers a variety of attractions, including a dog park, play areas for children, and delectable hot food. The station is an ideal place to purchase local food ingredients and souvenirs. Indulge in their unique soft serve ice cream made with fresh milk.
Asobo no Sato Kugino Roadside Station is located in Minamiaso area, Aso District of Kumamoto Prefecture. It is situated at the foot of the famous Mt Aso. This is a roadside station where you can relax while enjoying the natural beauty of its surroundings. The view from the wooden deck is awesome. It’s a great place to dine and taste Aso’s local delicacies and seasonal fruits, vegetables, and meat. Asobo no Sato Kugino Roadside Station a pretty large free parking area which can cater t approximately 150 regular cars and 20 more for large-sized vehicles, and bikes. It is just a little bit more than an hour drive from Kumamoto Station.

The two statues in front of this rest stop (a huge akage wagyu and its little calf trailing behind) are quite eye-catching. You can have a cup of coffee or a soft ice cream while enjoying the lovely view of the Aso mountain range in the distance. There are also some shops where you can check out the souvenirs and local produce.

Date visited: late June 2025 Google map brought me to Mont Bell shop next to this rest area. It took me some extra time to figure out the rest area is just next to this Mont Bell shop - selling outdoor clothes and gears. The rest area consists of one grocery store and one self service restaurant. Nice view while eating there. The grocery shop sells lunchboxes and offered microwave to warm up so you can eat at the platform and enjoy the view. I chose to eat that small box of minced meat lunchbox and it turned out to be delicious. Another chose to eat at the restaurant. It has air conditioning. It is free parking and ample spaces. Nothing much to do there - just shop eat and watch. Can walk at the back of this building if you are interested to explore. Probably an easy one hour in this area.

We stopped here on our tour guide to see Takachiho Gorge. It has a medium size grocery store as well as some smaller food shops and a coffee truck. We got amazing Aso jersey yogurt to try and there is a tap with fresh spring water you can fill up your bottles if they’re empty. A nice place with a flower field and the picturesque volcano in the background.

It’s open in new years holiday. You can go there to take pics of the mountains or take your dog to dog park or just shop for some fresh local veggies, fruits and they have also home made bentos and sandwiches. The best thing is getting aso farm milk ice cream or soft cream. If you are traveling alone and want to take picture of yourself; no worries they got you covered. They have a stand that holds phone for you.

Kannon Sakura Tree, located on the hillside of Mt. Aso, is approximately 90 years old and derives its name from a nearby horse-headed Kannon statue. This cherry blossom offers a stunning view against the backdrop of Mt. Aso, with Takadake and Nakadake visible from the opposite side during bloom season. When I parked my car in the parking lot and walked out, a tent was set up near the entrance and a donation of 300 yen per person was collected. I would be happy to pay for the cherry blossoms in their prime at Isshingyo, but... The scheduled plan for the day at Aso Hakusui Ryujin-gongen (Shirohebi Shrine) did not go as expected, causing a delay. An inquiry was made to determine the closing time of goshuin, and it was revealed that they had just finished since it was past 4:30. However, the friendly priest offered to wait if we were nearby.
Our itinerary that day hadn’t gone as planned and we were running late, so I called to ask what time they stopped goshuin. The priest informed me they had just stopped since it was past 4:30, but if we were close, they didn’t mind waiting. We rushed over, and to our surprise everyone was very friendly and welcoming, even though we were keeping them open. This shrine is famous for its white snake, who had unfortunately gone home for the day at 4:30. There are many white snake themed goshuin, protection amulets, postcards, etc. available. They were even so kind as to offer us white snake protection amulets for our wallets. I would love to visit again, during normal hours, so I can meet the white snake and thank everyone again.

(Translated by Google) In early July, while on a motorcycle tour in the Aso area, I went to Shirahebi Shrine, which I had previously searched for on Google Maps. As it was along Route 325, I was able to get there quickly and was able to worship there without any problems. As the name Shirahebi Shrine suggests, there is actually a white snake in the building, and the priest was inside and invited me into a room inside. There was a white snake in a case there, and I was told that it was about 25 years old and would live for about 40 years. I was told that I could have it purified to improve my financial luck, so I paid 1,000 yen, and the priest took out another white snake from something like a drawer in the Shinto altar, and placed it on my wallet and smartphone on the shelf, and had it purified. I was told that the white snake that was placed there was a young white snake about 15 years old. It was certainly white compared to the white snake in the case, and the white snake inside the case was a little yellowish. Unfortunately, photography was not allowed. I also received a talisman, and hopefully this will be an opportunity to improve my financial luck! The shrine itself was very clean and I was able to worship in a pleasant atmosphere. I would like to visit again if I go to the Aso area. It was my first time seeing it, and the whiteness was amazing! 🐍🐍🐍The waiting room (which is the shrine office?) is air-conditioned, so it's safe. The handle on the sliding door locks, so if you try to open it anywhere else, it won't open. Always use the handle when opening and closing. If you enter the shrine from the upper path, you'll have to turn left at a steep angle and descend to the parking lot, so if you're coming from below, you'll have plenty of time to turn right. It seems you can only exit from the top. I found a lava rock (?) and when I touched it, it was incredibly hot. Is that normal in the middle of summer with such a scorching heat?! It also enshrines Inari shrines, dragons, and the Seven Lucky Gods, so I hope it brings good fortune! Before praying, I looked up at the sky in front of the torii gate, and a coiled white snake appeared as a cloud. Then, while having lunch, I looked up out the window and saw a long, thin cloud that looked just like the white snake I'd seen earlier, with its eyes and mouth open. Thank you very much! 🙏 Afterward, a senior colleague who had received a prayer for the white snake displayed the talisman he received in his household altar and prayed to it every day. Apparently, a black snake began to appear on the talisman! I even won second prize in the stamp rally lottery! It's incredibly powerful and effective. (Translated by Google) I visited this Shirahebi Shrine on the first day of the month of the snake year, which occurs once every 12 years. It was a Sunday, so I had the impression that there were a lot of visitors considering the size of the shrine. After arriving, I learned that the official name of the shrine is "Aso Hakusui Ryujin Gongen." This was my first time visiting a shrine with the name XX Gongen since Mitake Ryuo Gongen Shrine about six years ago. When I arrived at the parking lot, the vivid Shirakitsune Inari Daimyojin caught my eye. On the way to the main shrine, I saw the Seven Lucky Gods All-Stars on my left. It was the first time I had seen a statue of everyone together. It was also the first time I had met Hotei (a pottery made by my grandfather) who lives in my house outside. Of course, I had come all the way from afar to worship the White Snake, but I had some personal thoughts in the waiting room, and the space felt strange, so I left. However, the shrine's goshuincho (two different colors?) was extremely beautiful. I got the white one with the hope of being able to continue to the second book, and decided to offer the two types of goshuin and the first offering there. The glittering and extremely beautiful art of Kinryu and Benzaiten✨ It doesn't come with a cover, so you have to get one separately. I usually try not to get them, but I couldn't resist the temptation of the glittering acrylic Benzaiten. The limited edition color is light blue🩵 The color seems to change depending on the season. It started to rain, so I hurriedly got in the car, and discovered Benzaiten when I was leaving the parking lot on my way home💡 Benzaiten is on the parking lot exit side (to the right after leaving the gift shop), so I didn't notice it, but I was glad I was able to visit during the brief sunny day. This is such a good find. Went here after for lunch after visiting Aso mountain. It’s one of those places where you could feel the history of the place once you get in. The food wasn’t anything mind blowing but pretty decent and nicest portions.

This place had amazing vibes! It is like an old fashioned saloon with a disco ball. The burgers here are absolutely delicious! I had the Chili Burger and the chili tasted just like home in America. I would go here everyday if I could. The guy that owns the place is like world famous and met so many famous people.

We were late for lunch, looking for somewhere to eat. We found this biker bar by accident. We were lucky! We ate some very nice burgers and fries. And the atmosphere was great! We really enjoyed it. Too bad we couldn't be there when there was live music.

Chill place on a Tuesday afternoon. There is great regard to biker ambience, sporting bike seat stools, posters, emblems, displays, and a musical stage with an open floor layout. It looks like a place that could really rock with a live show and a biker rally in the evenings and on weekends. 4+ Popcorn shrimp are a blowback from my ancient past, and were a great appetizer to share among friends. The chili cheese burger was excellent. The patty was not over-processed (NOT tofu-like meat-ハンバーグ)! Furthermore, the chili was not typical of Japan and was spicy though not overly so. Also, the chili included beans, an essential! The buns and vegetables were absolutely fresh and top tier. 4.7 This place is also pet friendly, so share the experience with the extended family. Boldly stated on the door was posted: “No attitudes, No fights,” – Agreed! as the two-person staff were both pleasant and welcoming. +

Great burgers & fries, really interesting Americana all over the place, and the staff there were so helpful - friendly, accommodating and attentive. Excellent place to stop off in Aso, with such a beautiful view from the building too!

Coffee shop
Souvenir store
Kusasenri Coffee Roastery is a trendy cafe situated near the renowned Kusasenrigahama in the Mt Aso area. The interior boasts a modern and cool ambiance with concrete, black, and white decor that complements the volcanic theme of the region. Whether you're visiting solo, as a couple, or with a small group, there are various seating options available.
Beautiful minimalist coffee shop with a Kees van der Westen Slim Jim machine. Don't see that very often in Japan, let alone up in Mount Aso where the largest active volcanos resides. The coffee was sublime especially with the view of Mount Aso in the background. Will definitely be back again someday. Just such a wonderful location for a coffee joint.
Happy B — Google review
A very chic cafe with a great view of Kusasenri. It was a bit crowded when we went. We ordered the Iced Cafe Latte and Iced Matcha Latte. I really loved the Matcha Latte. Loved the strong matcha flavor with the milk. The Iced Cafe Latte was good too.
Aibi Y — Google review
Kusasenri Coffee Roastery is a modern, minimalist café located right next to the Kusasenri grasslands in Aso. It’s a serene spot surrounded by wide-open plains with panoramic views of Mount Nakadake and grazing horses in the distance. The interior features clean lines, concrete accents, and large windows that let the landscape take center stage. There’s also outdoor terrace seating that lets you enjoy the view with fresh mountain air. The café is operated under the supervision of Coffee Gallery from Kumamoto City and uses high-end equipment, including the rare Kees van der Westen Slim Jim espresso machine. Beans are roasted on-site, ensuring fresh and high-quality brews. Popular drink choices include drip coffee, espresso, matcha latte, milk-brew, strawberry nectar, and their standout charcoal latte. Prices are typically between ¥500 to ¥650. Visitors often highlight the creamy texture of the matcha latte and the aromatic profile of the charcoal latte. Many also mention that the taste of the drinks is elevated by the incredible natural backdrop. The roastery opens from 10 AM to 5 PM daily, with last orders around 4:30 PM. It’s located at 2391-15 Nagakusa, Aso, Kumamoto 869-2231. As there’s no convenient public transport, it’s best accessed by car. Paid parking is available on-site. The café accepts various payment methods including credit cards, Suica, and mobile payment apps like PayPay. The main advantages of this café are its world-class coffee, unbeatable views, and tranquil atmosphere. The only downsides are that it can get crowded during peak hours, and ordering is done through QR code only, which might be slightly inconvenient for some. In summary, Kusasenri Coffee Roastery is more than just a café—it’s a coffee experience set in the heart of one of Japan’s most stunning volcanic landscapes. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or simply want a relaxing break while exploring Mt. Aso, this spot is well worth your time.

Good rest stop with meals. Been and egg was fine. You can have as much rice and soup as you want. They serve beef with meals.

A must-go coffee shot in front of the volcano! I ordered the Milk-brew and charcoal latte, ~500-600 yen (3USD) each. They are both great. The Milk-brew tastes special! It’s like the light-coffee taste milk, smooth and finely flavored. The charcoal latte comes with a nice latte art (even mine is a bit off the center)They uses Aso milk and selected beans The only thing I don’t like that much, but not a real big thing, is that you have to access the menu through QR code, while the whole shop is in good design… just next to the volcano tourist attraction! Why not a nice, natural physical menu if possible?

Unexpected cool and modern cafe in the Mt Aso area. Concrete, black and white furnishings, consistent with the volcanic theme. Solo, couple and small group seating options. Matcha latte was ok, bit too milky.

Restaurant
New Kusasenri is a modern establishment made of glass walls that offers breathtaking views of the Kusasenri prairies. The location is easily accessible by car and has a cafe and traditional Japanese set box food available. The quality of the food is above average, with fried pork with rice being the best choice, while their ramen leaves much to be desired. Housing facilities are also available for hire, and there's an interesting volcano frame museum nearby to visit.
What an amazing food court with an incredible view of Mount Aso. The food was surprisingly good for a food court but be prepared to pay as it is relatively pricey. The line for the touch screen ordering machines will get long when a busload of hungry tourists comes charging in so get in line quickly. Once you've ordered and paid, the food comes out very promptly unless of course you get caught behind a busload of 50 tourists. Get a seat next to the very tall windows that span the entire length of the eatery and enjoy your meal while admiring mother nature. Can't think of anything on this planet more enjoyable than that.
Happy B — Google review
New Kusasenri is a modern restaurant located beside the Kusasenri grassland, offering sweeping views of the vast Aso caldera and the active Nakadake volcano. Its glass-walled dining area allows diners to enjoy a stunning panoramic backdrop while they eat. The interior is minimalist and airy, letting the natural landscape take center stage. It’s a popular stop for tour groups and self-drivers exploring Mt. Aso. The food is casual yet hearty, with local specialties being the highlight. The akaushi roast beef bowl is a standout—tender slices of regional red beef served over rice, often praised for both flavor and presentation. Other popular options include fried pork rice bowls (katsu-don style) and ramen. While the ramen is warm and comforting, it’s considered average compared to the beef dishes. Meals typically come with miso soup and rice refills, making it good value for those with bigger appetites. Ordering is done via touchscreen kiosks. The process is smooth, though queues can build up during peak hours, especially when tour buses arrive. Prices range from around ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per person, which is reasonable considering the location and view. Seating is plentiful—over 300 seats in total—but window-side tables are the most sought after. If you arrive at opening time (11 AM), you’re more likely to get a scenic seat. The restaurant closes by 3 PM, so time your visit accordingly. Parking is available outside the facility for a small fee (about ¥410), and the restaurant accepts a wide range of payment methods, including credit cards and IC cards like Suica and PayPay. Overall, New Kusasenri is a worthwhile lunch stop when visiting Mt. Aso. It combines good food, breathtaking views, and a clean, modern setting. While it can get crowded, especially around lunchtime, it’s a great place to take a break, enjoy some local flavors, and soak in the volcanic landscape.

The food is ok, but nothing special. They prices are a bit high, as ezpected in such touristy place. The view is amazing. The do provide free miso soup and rice which is nice.

Came here because other restaurants nearby have queues and it was around 0 degrees. Normal food, don’t expect quality here. Drinks are free flow. You can try horse meat here at your own risk. Secure a window seat for amazing views of the field and “mountain”

Simple food, the taste is not bad but nothing special. The soup and rice can be refilled and self-service. A lot of seats can be picked but you need to come early to pick the window-seat, so that you can enjoy the beautiful view.

Quite good for an attraction tourist service spot. Best choice is fried pork with rice (gatsudon). Ramen is the worst. Environment is clean and lots of seats. Nice. You don't have a choice anyway. Beware of a compulsory entry fee for car, 410 yen. Ice cream, fresh milk flavor is very milky, nice!

Mark T — Google review
Fantastic place for children of all ages. There is a petting zoo and playpark both inside and outside. A really good variety of exciting challenges in a safe environment. Food and drink good for families too. Highly recommended but don't know about the rooms.
Wendy B — Google review

Shirley K — Google review
