Wellington

Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, sits near the North Island’s southernmost point on the Cook Strait. A compact city, it encompasses a waterfront promenade, sandy beaches, a working harbour and colourful timber houses on surrounding hills. From Lambton Quay, the iconic red Wellington Cable Car heads to the Wellington Botanic Gardens. Strong winds through the Cook Strait give it the nickname "Windy Wellington."

Specialty Museums
The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is a must-visit attraction in Wellington, offering free admission to its extensive collection. This national museum showcases natural history, cultural exhibits, and fine arts across six levels. Visitors can explore interactive displays and national treasures, including indigenous Maori exhibitions and the national art collection. Notable attractions include a colossal squid specimen and an earthquake simulator.
We had one day in Wellington and the weather was gorgeous so I wasn’t particularly keen on spending time indoors at a museum. We do love museums though so we thought we’d check it out and I’m so glad we did. The gallipoli exhibit was the best that I’ve seen, it’s something that should not be missed. The exhibit has been done in conjunction with Weta Workshop who did Lord of the Rings. Amazing doesn’t even cover it. The entire museum is quite interactive with a lot of interesting things for both kids and adults. A visit to this museum should not be missed

Great experience. The strong point of this museum is their story telling ability. The Anzac war effort in Turkey has been so well exhibited. One of my favourite museums. Highly recommended.
Karthik V — Google review
I had an absolutely fantastic time visiting the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington! The war exhibition was incredibly moving and well-curated, offering deep insights into New Zealand’s military history with engaging displays and detailed narratives. The nature exhibition was equally impressive, showcasing the country’s unique biodiversity in a way that was both educational and visually stunning. I particularly enjoyed learning about the Māori way of living, which was presented with respect and authenticity, providing a rich understanding of their culture, traditions, and history. Overall, the museum is a treasure trove of knowledge, beautifully blending interactive exhibits with informative content. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Wellington!

If you love museums and history, this is an absolute must-visit when you’re in Wellington, New Zealand. The museum offers an impressive collection showcasing New Zealand’s natural history, from its unique plants and animals to fascinating exhibits on the country’s connection with earthquakes and volcanoes. One of the highlights is the earthquake simulator, which gives you a firsthand experience of what an actual earthquake feels like — both educational and memorable. Before you leave, make sure to head up to the roof deck for a beautiful view of the Wellington Harbour and parts of the CBD. A well-curated and engaging museum that’s perfect for visitors of all ages — a great way to learn more about New Zealand’s unique environment and heritage.

Best musuem I have ever been to. It was stunning. All the information and hands on parts were so cool. We went to the main floor to kill some time before our check in and were blown away by how interesting everything was. Went back the next day (tickets are good for 48hrs) and went through the rest. While we were there, the Gallipoli exhibition was on display. I was blown away by the detail in the large sculptures. This musuem was a great way to end our trip to the north island. A beautiful place and we learned so much. Thank you
Nicky H — Google review
Wonderful National Museum. The exhibits are some of the best, very realistic and well maintained. The cultural section of the museum showcased the impressive skills and history of The Maori. The Gallipoli exhibit was informative and captured battles and wartime conditions in an accurate, thoughtful manner. This museum is one of the best we've had the pleasure of visiting. Well worth the trip.
Coco F — Google review
A great place to learn about the history of New Zealand. Exhibits were thoughtfully laid out and well presented. The Gallipoli war exhibit had some very realistic, larger than scale figures that depict the emotions and agony during wartime. They have lockers for rent to store your bag. I thought 2 hours would be enough time to see everything, but ended up taking 3.5 hours going at a steady pace. I learned so much about New Zealand.
Kevin N — Google review
One of the things that impressed us most about New Zealand is the incredible attention to detail in organising everything a visitor might encounter — and the museums are no exception. Te Papa is an essential experience for anyone passing through Wellington. It doesn’t just tell the socio-cultural history of the country, but also its natural history, local fauna and flora, with numerous interactive installations. What I love most is when a museum literally “puts things in your hands” — artefacts, objects, faithful reproductions — so you can truly understand what you’re looking at instead of just seeing items behind glass. We really appreciated the floor dedicated to climate change and the country’s geothermal and seismic evolution, as well as the floor focused on social issues, cultural globalisation, and social inclusion.

Gardens
Wellington Botanic Garden, established in 1868, spans 61 acres and offers a variety of attractions for visitors. It features native bush, a tropical greenhouse, seasonal beds, and colorful floral displays. The garden provides numerous walking routes suitable for families or solo explorers seeking a peaceful retreat from the city.
Outstanding garden with really beautiful flowers. The walkways are clean and easily accessible. Many of the flowers are from the Southern Hemisphere and so for visitors from the rest of the world, it's a really unique experience. Special mention for the bees and birds who aren't really that afraid of humans. A must visit of you love flowers.
Karthik V — Google review
It is a beautiful and peaceful spot in the heart of the city. It has lovely walking paths, themed gardens like the Rose Garden and Begonia House, and great views from the Cable Car. Free entry, family-friendly, and perfect for nature lovers.
Nesh K — Google review
A sunny day took us to the top of the hill by cable car for the second time in two days. Besides the beautiful view of the city and the bay, the gardens offer the opportunity to stroll and relax in an environment where nature predominates. Plants unique to this country, such as kauri, and flowers of many types are also present. The little ones also have the opportunity to learn the names of some plants, such as the aromatic ones used in cooking. The rose garden is a sight to behold. The pond with its waterfall and a few ducks is also lovely. Not to be missed. Free access.

With its connection to Te Ahumeranga hill and beyond, the Botanic Garden is like a lung situated right next foor to Wellingtons Central Business District and it's main arterial highway. There are a good number of activities in the park ranging from the Cable Car connecting to Lambton Quay the Cable Car Museum a scenic café a collection of observatories including the Space Place all the way to the Rose Garden and childrens' play areas. On a sunny day it is a delight to stroll here.

What a beautiful place to walk around. We were short on time and the day we went was the nicest of the days we had in Wellington. We did not get to see everything but what we did see was stunning. The amount of beauty was amazing. The flow of plants is perfect. I do wish to go back and see more. So much to enjoy
Nicky H — Google review
A wonderful place to explore and appreciate NZ's diverse flora. Excellent signage and facilities with access to the visitor centre, cable car and Fragrifert perfumery.
Patty M — Google review
Always well worth a visit when going to Wellington, especially taking the cable cart up and then walking down back to the CBD. The rose garden is a must see but not in bloom yet at thus time of year (spring).

A beautiful walk to take, not too strenuous either and the walking paths are very well maintained. The botanic gardens offer a wide range of native plants and flowers with a large flower garden that makes for fantastic pictures! Would highly recommend!

The Wellington Cable Car, the only operating funicular in New Zealand, has been in service since 1902. It provides stunning panoramic views of the city and offers a visit to the historic museum. A must-visit attraction is Te Papa, an interactive national museum showcasing the stories of Aotearoa New Zealand. After riding the iconic cable car, visitors can enjoy breathtaking city views while indulging in ice cream at the top.
An Absolute Wellington Essential Iconic Views & Easy Access! No trip to Wellington is complete without riding the iconic Cable Car! It’s a charming, efficient, and quintessential Wellington experience that delivered exactly what we hoped for: stunning views and seamless access to the Botanic Garden. The journey itself is delightful. Boarding at the historic Lambton Quay station (easy to find!), the bright red car smoothly ascends through the cool hillside tunnel before bursting out to reveal breathtaking panoramic views over the city, harbour, and surrounding hills. It’s a short ride (approx. 5 minutes), but the vistas unfolding as you climb are genuinely special. We loved spotting landmarks like the Beehive and Te Papa from above. Great photo ops throughout! The top station is more than just a viewpoint. It houses a small but interesting Cable Car Museum(free entry!) detailing the history, which we enjoyed. The real bonus? You step out directly into the stunning Wellington Botanic Garden. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring the lush trails, Lady Norwood Rose Garden, Peace Garden, and Space Place observatory (tickets required). You can easily spend hours wandering down. Key Tips for Visitors: Frequency:Runs every 10 minutes, very reliable. Check latest times online. Tickets:Use the Snapper card (common on Wellington buses) for the cheapest fare, or buy a single/return ticket at the station. Consider a combo ticket with Space Place if interested. Best Seats: For the best views downhill, try to get a forward-facing window seat. All-Weather Fun:A perfect activity even on wet or windy Wellington days (it's covered!). Walking Back:Many people ride up and enjoy a scenic walk down through the gardens highly recommended! Accessibility: Modern cars and stations are wheelchair accessible. The Wellington Cable Car is efficient, scenic, historically charming, and the perfect gateway to the beautiful Botanic Garden. It offers incredible value and iconic views packed into a short, enjoyable ride. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a local showing friends around, it's an absolute must-do and earns its status as a top attraction. 5 stars! A highlight of our Wellington visit.

It is a funicular railway in Wellington, New Zealand between Lambton Quay, the main shopping street in the central city, and Kelburn, a suburb in the hills overlooking the central city and Wellington Harbour. The cable car route rises 120 m over a length of 609 m. The trip takes about 5 minutes each way and is a very popular ride and place at the top, lots of tourists and locals. You can get to the summit by car or public transport as well. Plenty of free parking available at the summit. Toilets available at summit and base. Cafes and restaurants available. At the top you can visit the cable car museum, botanic gardens. Lots of people here, careful with personal belongings. Easy terrain, lot of easy walking. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Beautiful place. Lots to see. Lovely place for picnic. Great place for photography. You can also walk down safe tracks from the summit to the city terminal like we did. Cable car fees payable.

This local cable car is a historic Wellington icon and a must-try experience when visiting the city. It not only takes you to the entrance of the Wellington Botanic Garden, but also offers a beautiful scenic view of the city as you ride uphill. At the top, you’ll find a viewing deck with fantastic city panoramas, the Cable Car Museum, and a café that serves great coffee — a perfect spot to relax and take in the view. For a return fare of just $10 NZD, it’s an affordable and enjoyable way to experience one of Wellington’s classic attractions. Highly recommended for both locals and tourists exploring the city!

Very cool - right in the middle of the city (Lambton Quay shopping and business area - CBD). The entrance to the ticket booth is tucked into an alleyway. I came upon it unexpectedly whilst walking around . Runs every 10 minutes. Lovely views on the ride up with commentary. Nice little coffee shop at the top. Had a delicious cappuccino and a tasty treat. Enjoyed the great views. I decided to walk back down through the botanical gardens on well laid, paved paths passing through clearly marked gardens. Highly recommend. Marvelous children's playground along the way. I saw signs while at the top for the observatory but didn't have enough time to check it out. I recommend to buying a one way going up as it's very easy and simple to purchase your return if you decide to ride down instead of walk down. Give this delightful adventure time, don't be in a hurry. There's also a public bus at the top of you want to go elsewhere.

It was a shite day weather wise but who cares when you have such a lovely visual experience going through the tunnel. The views were spectacular from the top. Beloved the museum/shop also. Staff might want to smile and be a little friendly. 😃

Always a great ride on the cable. Friendly team and easy to navigate the station. I went recently to specifically see the winding room in action as they were doing an open day was really cool to see and learn how it works from the team who look after and drive the cars.

A typically wet and cool day, the gardens are a stop I'll be back for. The museum and food well worth the stop. Keep an eye out for pickpockets, nearly broke the toes of a dude trying to steal my gopro. They operate in pairs/groups. Only place in my entire trip I ran into this.

Wellington Museum is a captivating museum housed in a preserved historic building, offering various unique exhibits that showcase the region's history. The state-of-the-art multimedia displays bring the city's maritime history and evolution to life. One of its notable exhibits focuses on the 1968 Wahine disaster, serving as a poignant reminder of Wellington's connection to the sea and the power of nature.
Interesting way to learn a bit about New Zealand's history, it's very interactive and kid-friendly too. You can enter for free and pay to see a guided or more personalized tour.

Recently went to the Wellington Museum, first time in a few years. The exhbits were great, very comprehensive in thier information and many of them were quite fun and engaging. The more somber or serious topics were really well presented.

Wonderful facilities for the event we attended. The guests speaker was amazing and the staff were really helpful. Our kids enjoyed exploring the museum afterwards.

Absolutely amazing! I've been to many museums and those about city history are often not the most interesting, but this one is extraordinary. So much to discover. I'm really impressed by the creativity, passion and attention to detail that went into these exhibitions. My favourites are of course the big carpet with a map of Wellington, the collection of historic news films about Wellington on the ground floor, the retelling of Māori stories on the second floor and that the exhibition on the ground floor is both in Māori and English. I will definitely come back. (don't forget to donate if you can, when you visit)

A special event was advertised with free tickets in a low sensory environment catering to neurodiverse people. Hugely appreciated, wouldn’t have considered a trek into the city otherwise. My 12 year old son loved it, there were areas to relax, it wasn’t very bright and wasn’t noisy. There were tables set up to do cutting and gluing etc which he particularly enjoyed. My teenage daughter and her friend enjoyed the quiet areas but didn’t feel that it was particularly different and the colouring and cutting stuff didn’t have as much appeal to them. Such a shame the pay wave was down, I’d left my wallet in the car so wasn’t able to use Apple Pay to purchase the snacks and drinks which were very reasonably priced - my fault for not being better prepared. The staff were very warm and friendly. And we all appreciated the greeting that was done so gently and authentically.

Engaging museum located in one of the amazing heritage buildings (former home of the Wellington Harbour Board) on the Wellington waterfront. Filled with exhibits documenting the people, events and history which shaped Wellington into the city it is today. In particular, The Attic has some interesting exhibitions to experience. Depending on how much detail you want to go into, you could easily spend a few hours at the Museum. Pair it with a visit to the NZ Portrait Gallery, which is a short walk away, and you have a solid half day of indoor activities. Great for families with a number of interactive displays on display.

Incredible museum. Beautiful old building. Such helpful and knowledgeable staff. The attic is just AWESOME. Great visit for the kids, rivals Te Papa for fun. Not size, of course. But definitely just as fun!

Animal hospital
Wellington Zoo, the country's first zoo, is a popular attraction offering animal activities and programs for visitors of all ages. It is located in the green belt of Wellington, New Zealand and was established by former Prime Minister Richard Seddon after being gifted with a cub. The zoo features a diverse range of wildlife from around the world, making it an exciting destination for animal lovers.
We did a Close Encounter with the ring tailed Lemurs and it was fantastic. Zoo entry was included with the close encounter which made it good value and gave that something special to the zoo. We also really enjoyed talking to one of the volunteers at the zoo. She was full of stories and fun facts about the animals.

Wellington Zoo is a must-visit! Perfect for nature lovers and kids. Loved the variety of animals, beautiful surroundings, and informative rangers. Ticketing was smooth, and the facilities (restrooms, food options) were great. Highly recommend!
Sharanya R — Google review
Awesome zoo! Highly recommend booking a close encounter in advance. We did the meerkat encounter and it was amazing!! All the enclosures are well designed and the animals looked well cared for.
Alex — Google review
Beautiful walk and love seeing the animals. The zoo is well themed, we love that effort put into asia/africa/australia. We also do homeschool education talks here twice a year and they're great. 3 stars because the animals enclosures are small. As much as I love seeing exotic creatures, I always feel a bit sad and wish they'd spend more on extending room for current animals rather than building new enclosures for more variety.
Kristy H — Google review
I enjoyed my walk through this zoo, about 2 hours. I caught one feeding show among many throughout the day. The zoo keepers were very friendly and informative. I like the multiple toilet access with a couple stalls vs. one big washroom area near the entrance/exit like other zoos. Sad that a few cages have no animals at all unless it's feeding/show time.
Betsy C — Google review
Always nice to visit when in Wellington, ashame this time there where no big cats/bear visible and some things closed. Possibly due to time/date of visit. Had some amazing animals to see, huge giraffes. A nice place to take the kids.
Sebastiaan V — Google review
The zoo may be nice for kids, but for adults it was average. We saw a giraffe, a kangaroo, two Tasmanian devils who seemed more disappointed in their lives, a big rooster and a pig. The rest had to be hidden or put to sleep, no luck...

Restaurant
Boulcott Street Bistro is a renowned dining spot in Wellington, housed in a charming Victorian cottage. Since its establishment in 1991, it has become a culinary haven amidst the city's hustle and bustle. The restaurant's unique architecture draws inspiration from Victorian gothic style, making it an iconic venue.
A charming little restaurant in Wellington that’s well-known and well-loved. While the menu is on the pricier side, it’s absolutely worth it for the exceptional service, impeccable food, and the overall experience. The staff are warm, friendly, and attentive, making every visit feel special. We’ve celebrated birthdays here and have never been disappointed- the food and service are consistently top-notch. There’s even a kids’ menu, which is great for families. On our most recent visit, we ordered two steaks, one lamb dish, and a kids’ fish and chips. Fresh bread and butter were served at the beginning, which was a lovely touch. For dessert, we enjoyed the tiramisu and the chocolate tart- both beautifully presented and delicious. The interior decor of the restaurant is elegant and full of charm, with a cosy, intimate atmosphere. The building architecture stands as a historical reminder of a bygone era of the colonial times with its low ceilings, wood finishes and small rooms. I especially love the cute little staircase leading to the second floor and the beautiful paintings that adorn the restaurant walls of contemporary artwork- are a tasteful classy touch that adds a modern twist to the space. Highly recommend this spot for a special occasion or a memorable night out.
Daezjn — Google review
A polished, well-run establishment that largely meets expectations, but doesn’t quite justify its price point. Service was competent and the experience smooth, yet I hoped for an extra spark—tableside touches or a distinctive signature element—to make it feel special. The food was solid overall. The octopus would have benefited from a more assertive sear on the exterior, while both the lamb and venison could have delivered bolder, more pronounced flavors. Good, not great—reliable for a pleasant night out, but lacking the memorable highlights you’d expect at this cost.

Beautiful villa restaurant tucked in between two high rise buildings. Came for WoW and absolutely loved the service, the staff were interesting in talking to us and very friendly. The food was exceptional - one of us had the set menu for WoW and two ordered off the menu (love that option).

Very classic atmosphere. Also the service. The $25 T-bone steak was a GREAT deal. Especially with the onion soup. The waitress was so nice. Separated the soup into two so we both can tried it. We got the roasted broccolini too! Love the decorations. The only thing is a bit noisy. Otherwise everything was perfect!
Faye H — Google review
Holy cow. Had my birthday dinner here and service was so lovely. Oysters were fresh, mains were amazing, and dessert was too good (especially the crème brûlée). Thoroughly enjoyed my night.
Tiffany K — Google review
When I first went to the store, I thought the service was good. But the overall experience yesterday made me feel that the experience in this store was very bad!!!! The food was very bad and the service was also very poor. !! Everyone recommended the onion soup. I tried it and found that the onion had a burnt smell and the taste was very strong. The whole soup was too strong for me and lost the original flavor of the food. It was like a bunch of food piled up and cooked together, without the fresh taste of the food itself, but a very strong taste. The steak I ordered took a long time to come🤣. I don't understand if the waiters here are trained to take a long time to serve the rice so that the restaurant can make more money. I didn't order any drinks, but they never poured me water until I asked them to. The couple at the next table ordered a lot of food for the holiday and the waiter was very nice to them. But I felt I was treated differently. I'm allergic to alcohol and can't drink it. I already told the waiter that I didn't need anything and just wanted water. But the waiter still asked me if I wanted sparkling water (which is charged). I was having dinner alone at a small table next to the couple and video chatting with my father who was in the hospital. I wanted to share the dinner with him. I didn't take a picture of that female customer at all, but she insisted that I did and wouldn't let me video chat. She asked me to turn off my phone and told me that she didn't want to see other people's faces while she was eating, especially not my father's face. We weren't even sitting at the same table. The woman at the next table said she didn't want to see my father's face. Her request was very strange to me. She and her husband were talking very loudly and disturbing me, but they wouldn't let me video chat with my father. And it was all because I didn't take a picture of her at all. Because when I was video chatting with my father, I could only see my father's face and he could only see mine. I felt that she was really very impolite and disrespectful to others. And the waiter didn't even understand the situation and just told me that I couldn't use my phone. I felt very disrespected and that the dinner I had yesterday made me feel very bad. The service in this store was also very bad. ! They directly told me that I couldn't record videos. I told them that I wasn't recording videos at all. I was just video chatting with my father and I didn't record anyone else. I felt that both this store and that customer discriminated against me because I was the only Asian person in the store and I really couldn't afford to order a lot of food like that female customer.

I had the pleasure of dining for lunch at Boulcott Street Bistro and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. The lamb shank was absolutely delicious—tender, rich in flavour, and beautifully presented. The service was top notch, friendly and attentive. The ambience has a lovely old-world charm (hard to find with so many hipster options nowadays), with its classic interior and cozy atmosphere that makes you feel welcome the moment you step in. Big shoutout to the bartender—great personality and had some fantastic recommendations. Altogether, a perfect mix of quality food, warm hospitality, and a touch of timeless elegance.

Logan Brown Restaurant and Bar is a special-occasion dining spot housed in a former bank with high ceilings. The restaurant offers contemporary New Zealand cuisine, emphasizing local, sustainable, and organic ingredients. The front of house is managed by Jesse while Shep, who has experience at top restaurants like Logan Brown and under chef Tetsuya Wakuda, leads the kitchen.
Beautiful atmosphere and food, We opted for the 6 course degustation menu and added deep fried Marlborough Oysters. The Oysters were absolute perfection with the lightest batter, this was definitely a highlight. The 6 courses were amazing apart from one serving of celeriac which was slightly crunchy which didn’t go down well (this is a personal preference). Service was good, however our previous visit set us up with high expectations, staff were lovely and inviting our waiter was just a little aloof and we found other staff on the floor a bit more attentive. Ambience as always is beautiful and intimate.

My daughters last uni exam finally completed. We decided to enjoy a good meal together. Logan Brown did not disappoint. No reservation, no problem! Ultra friendly hosts found a lovely spot for us. We had to choose an entree, main & dessert. Paua ravioli & venison for me, pork & duck for my daughter. She is a fussy eater but loved the flavours. Dessert was possibly the highlight for her. Chocolate mousse with lots of added colour & flavours. Too much to explain! Try it yourself for a treat. Thanks guys for a memorable meal.

📍 Logan Brown Ah, the famous Logan Brown, one of the top restaurants in Wellington, and one of the few fine dining that's open on Sunday night! I used to come here for celebrations but haven't had much to celebrate these years, thought we'd do an early birthday treat for my friend who shares the same birthday as me! They've just come out with a new 3-course set menu a few days ago, and that dark chocolate mousse looked divine, + the almost-30-years-running paua ravioli just had to be ordered! We shared everything and made sure we ordered all different dishes, with a mocktail each. I loved my elderflower spritz and she also enjoyed her cucumber spritz. We started off with the house made bread, it was a slice of sourdough and fruit bread each, but to me the star really was the caramelized onion butter and truffle butter duo, OMG! The paua ravioli was of course amazing, creamy and cheesy, and the pork belly was beautifully flavoured, that crackling was next level crunchy, we will leave the sound effects of the crunchiness to your imagination! (We recorded it on video but I felt it's probably not something you guys want to see 😂) the tangy citrus slices paired well with the fragrant crayfish sausage. The fish was soft and a very thick slice, so was very satisfying, the sauce was fun as well to drizzle, and the venison was tender and cooked just right with a juicy side of blueberries! I was a bit too scared of the black pudding but my friend was game, she said it was actually better than she had anticipated and she finished it all! We were full of questions and the staff was super knowledgeable, she explained how all the seafood were caught by them, they went hunting for the meat because wild is better than farmed, and they'd go foraging for all the plants used, they are very proud of their sustainability! We also got a side of asparagus and Portobello mushrooms, that mushroom was so sweet, I loved whatever sauce they put on it! Then came the dessert, the chocolate mousse was so cool, the meringue looks like a rocket about to be launched, and when you cut open the mousse, there was a marshmallow inside! Of course it was very velvety just as it should, with the ice cream on the side, it worked perfectly. The panna cotta was also beautiful, another sauce pouring interactivity, definitely more of a refreshing type dessert if you prefer this. If you do what we did and sharing both, definitely eat the pana cotta first, because the chocolate was just super rich! What a treat, loved everything we had and definitely deserving as one of the top restaurants in Wellington, still going strong! Also it was pretty full so definitely book!

We opted for the early bird set menu. The space was beautiful and the service was fantastic, but unfortunately, we were all a bit disappointed with the food. The bread to start was great — the miso and truffle butter was really tasty. The entrées and mains looked amazing, but the flavours just didn’t live up to the presentation. The desserts were more like little sweet snacks than proper desserts. The “tiramisu macaron” was literally just one macaron, and others at our table got a single chocolate truffle. We were hoping for something a bit more substantial. Luckily, we weren’t super hungry, because there were no shared vegetables or sides included. Based on photos we’ve seen online, it looks like the early bird menu isn’t just a reduced price — the portion sizes are cut down quite a bit too.

We were hoping to try their five-course degustation lunch. It wasn’t supposed to be available during our visit, but after I emailed to request it, they kindly agreed. What a great start to our experience! The place itself is beautiful, with a warm and elegant atmosphere. We especially loved the freshly baked bread served with truffle butter — such a delightful beginning. Our standout dish was the porcini and ricotta gnocchi, absolutely delicious and perfectly done. The staff were lovely and attentive, and the price felt very reasonable for such a refined and satisfying meal. We’ll definitely be back!

Went to enjoy the pre-show dinner menu and was absolutely blown away. Fantastic price point $69. A chance to enjoy exceptional food in gorgeous surroundings with excellent staff. Will definitely make a point of going again next visit to Wellington.

Amazing experience, wonderful food and atmosphere. Only downfall was our main plates etc were left on the table for quite some time after we had finished, even though staff passed our table frequently, they didn't get cleared. This delayed our dessert.

Repeat visit from San Francisco, 2 years after last time, & Logan Brown once again excelled! Amber provided gracious & generous service, & the 3 course prix fixe (pork belly, lamb loin paired nicely with a Sam Harrop Grand Amateur Syrah, & chocolate mousse for me tonight) was delicious, beautifully plated, & very good value. Hope to be back again soon!

Seafood restaurant
Fish and seafood restaurant
Ortega Fish Shack is a stylish and cosmopolitan restaurant in New Zealand's capital city, offering upscale and creative fish dishes as well as steaks in a relaxed and bustling atmosphere. The menu focuses on seafood, featuring highlights such as lobster-and-prawn ravioli and sautéed paua with braised pork cheek in an Asian-style sauce. The beer list is diverse, featuring selections from Wellington makers and other excellent beers from around New Zealand and the world.
We had a wonderful experience at Ortega Fish Shack. Sat at the bar and were entertained by Max the bartender, other servers and customers next to us. Every dish was fresh, tasty, and professionally prepared and plated. We really enjoyed their wine list and helpful descriptions. The ambiance, service and quality were all top notch, making for a memorable evening!

Wow wow wow. A truly transcendent dining experience, Ortega Fish Shack is a shining exemplar of culinary excellence, rivaling our beloved Chef's Table. Every aspect of our visit was nothing short of extraordinary. The service was impeccable, the food sublime. The oysters were a revelation, the steak cooked to perfection. Honestly, it's a testament to the power of exceptional cuisine to uplift and inspire.

Cozy, welcoming restaurant with a simple menu that’s exceptionally well executed. The staff are well trained and genuinely knowledgeable about the dishes. If you’re a seafood lover, this place is a must-visit. It’s a solid 4.5 stars for me (table settings and furniture were bit off putting), but I’m happily giving it 5 to set it apart from other four-star spots.

Amazing amazing amazing! This spot came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Got lucky to snag bar seating on a busy Saturday night. Drinks were special made and fantastic. Ceviche - so so fresh and flavorful. Shrimp pasta was a major surprise! Would definitely come again!

Always a 10/10. Ortega Fish Shack is consistently outstanding. The food is insane, the service is warm and welcoming, and the whole vibe is relaxed and unpretentious. One of the best dining experiences in Wellington every single time.

We absolutely love this restaurant! The food, staff and experience are always exceptional. The pan-fried prawn tails, beef filet are always on-point from a taste! They have seasonal fish dinners that always have unique ingredients, and very flavorful. Definitely recommend to come here!

Exceptional experience. Lovely and friendly team made me so welcome (travelling alone). Down to earth, unpretentious, indie vibes. And the food was amazing - beautifully cooked, full of flavour, very individual- it felt special. Great beer and wine selection too. Go here, you'll love it.

We chose this place from Rough Guide and were managing expectations but it is the best resteraunt so far on our NZ tour. It will remain thr best of North Island as we go south tomorrow. Well informed staff with perfect level of service. Gorgeous food - we stuck to the specilaity of fish and were impressed with theflavours and expert cooking. The salon was busy (justifiably so) and as such quite noisy. We enjoyed the buzz but gor some may be too much.

Vietnamese restaurant
French restaurant
Apache Restaurant in Wellington offers a modern twist on traditional Northern Vietnamese street food with a hint of French influence. The menu features a variety of dishes that balance the five fundamental Vietnamese flavors, and most items are gluten-free. The restaurant uses local, organic ingredients and offers an impressive wine list along with Vietnamese-inspired cocktails.
Stats: Thrusday 7:30 pm I was highly surprised to discover the new venue, really nice atmosphere full of vibe and good service The overall was great. Like anything it's always room for improvement like maybe having the lighting more of the soft side. Besides that I think the venue is beautiful perfect for a date out. We ordered 4 dishes for two people it included 2 small dishes: The Salmon parcel The Pork rolls 2 mains Sweet chicken And the famous shaking beef. With bonus track of Duck curry. +2 coconut rice Drinks 2 cocktails 2 wines $200 Total My favourite was the Chicken really tasty. The beef was a bit on the "too cook" side I would prefer it less cook and more tender. The taste of that curry was delicious. The peanuts on the pork roll were really yummy I should have keep them for the other dishes. Our experience was really pleasant. I'll recommend this place for any type of celebration, special day or a date out.

First time at Apaches new location and wow it did not disappoint. The restaurant was buzzing, the staff were amazing and the food is just delicious. The food is fresh, tasty and portions are generous. The bar has a great range of drinks. Highly recommend!!

We went for dinner without a reservation on a Friday. Friendly reception and they found us a 2 person table with high chairs at the bar area. We ordered a dish called 'shaking beef' ($42), 'salmon parcels' ($17) and 'chicken spring rolls' ($17) and one portion of rice noodles ($4). The food was excellent, great mix of flavors. Nothing was a disappointment. The interior of the restaurant is interesting sort of cosy.

We went here for our after workshop dinner and I was surprised at how good the food is. The cocktails were also really nice in a did appreciate that they’ve given some recommendations before we ordered. Although, the service was a bit slow, given that we’re a group of seven.

We went to this restaurant for my birthday. The food was great and the staff were sooper friendly. Service was pretty quick. Mains portion size was generous. Had fried chicken ,salmon pockets, shaking beef and caramelised chicken. Everything was yumm.😊

We tried the Burger Wellington chicken, and it was excellent full of flavour and definitely worth recommending. Unfortunately, the iced coffee was a real letdown. The menu mentioned condensed milk, but it was clear there wasn’t any the drink tasted flat and disappointing. The wait staff seemed tired and not very helpful, which made the atmosphere feel a bit unwelcoming.
Sean W — Google review
Passed by the restaurant during a food tour and I was told that they had a burger entry in a competition, which wasn’t available for order. So I settled on the spring roll and beef pho. It’s hard to get fried spring rolls terribly wrong, and fortunately, they didn’t. The pho, on the other hand, was pretty bad in terms of the clumpy noodles (which got better as I left it in the bowl longer), bland broth and lack of herbs. The only saving grace was the beef, which was tender enough. Service was good, friendly. Pity about the food

Kisa, located on Cuba Street in the capital, is a popular Middle Eastern restaurant known for its enchanting blend of Turkish and Middle Eastern flavors. The brainchild of Dean White, the spacious 90-seater restaurant boasts earthy tones of Lebanon and Turkey, with polished wooden tables and comfy seating. The menu offers an impressive array of mezze plates and hearty dishes such as smoked eggplant moutabel and shawarma spiced lamb shoulder, all made with the best local ingredients.
Hands down, the food at Kisa is delicious. Every dish hit the spot—flavorful, fresh, and perfectly executed. I’m not usually a bread person, but wow, the bread here was next level—tasty, warm, and honestly, I’d go back just for that. The service was super quick, which is always a win, and the prices were fair for the quality. Highly recommend if you're in Wellington!

Such a treat! 🥙✨ This place has decent options of DF and GF (think their GF bread was bit on the crispier side) also a super clear allergens menu — ordering is a breeze. The garlic pilaf was pure magic, my partner relished all their dishes, especially the wild thar, and for my fellow non-meat eaters, the falafel main plate is a total win (and great for sharing!). Dessert was fresh and light, though I was hoping for a stronger hit of the pomegranate sauce. One of their staff, who took our coats, was incredibly professional and spot-on with customer service. Delicious food we’ll definitely be back.

A well-established, well-marketed spot that delivers exactly what it promises: good food and reliably attentive service. Our experience was smooth from start to finish, with dishes prepared competently and staff keeping things running efficiently. While nothing missed the mark, there wasn’t a single showstopping plate that made us eager to plan a return visit purely for the wow factor. Still, it’s a solid, satisfying choice—especially for casual catch-ups or a lively meal with friends. The ambiance leans more social than intimate, so it’s better suited to groups than a romantic dinner for two. Overall, a confident 4-star pick and a dependable place to have a good time and a good meal.

This is a great restaurant situated on corner of Cuba and Vivian Street in Wellington. It was busy for a Monday night. The service and food were excellent. This is a turkish restaurant. They cater for dietary needs and allergies. They have vegan and gluten free options . The food was extremely tasty. The staff were friendly and provided fantastic service. One that was interesting is there is not a great deal of privacy. It is on a busy street corner and you have people watching from the street. Photos include a beef short rib on rice and chickpea, lamb chop, tahr kebab, beetroot salad...

FAVOURITE RESTO IN WELLY. before visiting kisa, i’d never actually tried middle eastern food only those drunk kebabs in the middle of courtenay place (iykyk, if that even counts). this was my first time trying real authentic middle eastern dishes and omg… every single one was delish. i had no clue what to order, so just picked a few different things off the menu and everything was worth trying. i usually don’t eat lamb bc i don’t like the flavour, but they totally changed my mind the lamb skewers were insanely good, so flavourful and full of umami. ⭐️HERE IS THE RECOMMENDATION ⭐️ TARAMASALATA (the lime oil was so flavourful) 9.7/10 HUMMUS (loved the crispy chickpeas) 9.4/10 MUHAMMARA (creamy with a nice walnut taste) 9.3/10 SPICED WILD GOAT MINCE LAHMACUN FLATBREAD (wasn’t sure what to expect but wow probably the best dish i’ve had this year. never liked lamb mince before but the combo with the flatbread was amazing please order this) 9.8/10 FRIED BRUSSEL SPROUTS (omg the woodfired flavour!! i used to hate brussel sprouts but hell yeah so flavourful, a must order) 9.7/10 NOHUTLU GARLIC PILAF (never say no to pilaf loved this as a side with lamb skewers, perfect duo) 8.5/10 CHARCOAL LEEKS (yum with the almond dip) 9.1/10 MOZZARELLA BÖREKS (like mozzarella sticks with a crispy thin layer great starter) 8.2/10 SMACKED CUCUMBER (garlic yoghurt cucumber, not too special but good as a side) 8.0/10 LAMB PIRZOLA (tried 3 different skewers on the menu and this was the best the meat just melts on your tongue, so soft, perfectly grilled medium-rare. love you chef) 10/10 FLANK STEAK ŞIŞ KEBAB (a bit firm but still tender enough, and the smoked butter with two sauces made it so good) 9.4/10 LAMB URFA KEBAB (classic lamb kebab flavour, really good meat just didn’t love the whole tomato on yoghurt part. still flavourful overall) 9.1/10 TA'AMEYA FALAFEL 9.4/10
