Newcastle

Newcastle is a harbour city in the Australian state of New South Wales. Its plentiful beaches are linked by the Bathers Way, a coastal walk stretching between Nobbys Beach and Merewether Beach. The walk provides access to Bogey Hole, a convict-built ocean bath from the colonial period. Also on the path is the 1880s Fort Scratchley, a historic site and a viewpoint for spotting migrating whales.

Fort Scratchley, a 19th-century fortress located on Flagstaff Hill in Newcastle's east end, is a significant historical site with military history exhibits and tunnel tours. Built in 1882 as part of Australia's defense against potential Russian attacks, the fort saw action during World War II when it returned fire from Japanese submarines in the 'the shelling of Newcastle.'
Was an awesome visit. All the exhibits, the views, tunnel tour, and the 1pm firing g of the cannon.. we enjoyed talking with Bob, and Norm was lovely, Norm's sense of humour and stories were brilliant.
Mark A — Google review
Absolutely wonderful tunnel tour for $15 per adult. The historical society volunteer guides are great and explaining everything and happy to answer any questions. They’ve done a wonderful job at keeping the fort open to the public and restoring a huge piece of local history. Amazing views from the top with plenty of ocean life to watch. Would highly recommend.

Such a wonderful place to visit!! Would highly recommend going there. We had a great day. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Thank you 🙏
Claire A — Google review
Loved the fort, it was awesome to see a real piece of history and how our land was protected. It's free to walk around but need to pay for the tunnels, which are pretty cool as well. If you go before 1:00pm make sure you stick around as there is the one o'clock gun that goes off.
Jesse A — Google review
Stunning views and interesting and insiteful opportunity to learn about the history of Newcastle. Free entry and parking. Great place to take children.
Nicole S — Google review
Great place, very well taken cared and shown by a very enthusiastic staff of volunters, witnessed the 13:00p cannon shot followed by a guided visit to the tunnels, that's really the part you have to pay for,the fortress itself is free, but if you ask me it's absolutely worth every cent.
Ivan M — Google review
Admission is free, and the staff at the front gate are very friendly, welcoming us and providing some additional information. The panoramic view from the top is truly awesome, and I highly recommend a visit when you are in Newcastle.

The museum features engaging displays such as Supernova and Mininova exhibitions designed to captivate visitors of all ages, including a soft-play area for preschoolers and hands-on activities for older children.
A must visit, especially for kids. The light and sound show was very interesting. The Science section is super fun.

Newcastle Museum closed on Mondays and opening on Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 5pm The are three main exhibition halls displaying different themes of historical life. Such as mining, garments, immigration generations and etc. Parking at the Paid open carpark then walking 2 minutes to it. I have a good overall time there with my family and I would like to recommend it for tourists travelling from other cities to Newcastle in Australia.

Kids had a ball after complaining when I suggested they take a look (I had to bribe them with icecream to visit). The sciece area was a hit and the steel pouring assimilation was cool! Very enjoyable and free!
Casey L — Google review
Great museum and friendly stuff. I enjoyed the science section as well as the metallurgy and coal section. The metallurgy section had a really cool demonstration of the smelting that was done in Newcastle. It's a fantastic demonstration with lights and smoke machine 🙂. Way better than expected.
Frank J — Google review
Excellent. Not large, but they do a lot with a small space! Definitely pay for the model exhibition, that was wonderful.
Nikki A — Google review
Great museum with free entry to visit and explore, definitely worth visiting. Staffs are friendly and helpful too.
Annie C — Google review
Love the Model T, and the steelworks history. The science section was also fun. They have a good display of the German influence on the Hunter as well.

The museum here entry was very cheap. By cheap I mean free 😋 when you think free you’re gonna think it’s like ehhhh but this place was honestly a fantastic day trip. I had fun :D BONUS: I got to sit on the train. Chooo choooooo 🚂

Blackbut Reserve is such an amazing place for nature and photography lovers. You can spot plenty of wildlife, from birds to wallabies, making photo hunting really exciting. The atmosphere is calm, green, and relaxing-perfect for a walk while carrying your camera. It's also a great place for families, a fun walk with friends, or just to enjoy a refreshing day outdoors. Truly a fun and memorable spot for everyone.
Vian A — Google review
I visited this place on a lovely afternoon and had an amazing experience. The parking was convenient and well-organized. Birds and different animals were freely around the area, which made it both exciting and enjoyable to watch. The pleasant sound of birds created a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. There were also great facilities for barbecue and seating, making it a perfect spot to spend time. The weather was wonderful, and everything together made it a truly memorable visit.
Rasoul B — Google review
I spent a lovely morning at the Blackbutt Nature Reserve and it was great! We saw wallabies, one koala, emus and much more. The park in itself is really nice and very well organized. It’s perfect for families with kids ! We finished our morning having lunch at the park, as there are many pic nic tables. The reserve is free but the parking lot is around 6$ by hour. We had a coffee and a matcha at the cafe there and it was not really good … we also waited a lot.
Elena B — Google review
Nice park with relaxing area with a playground near the cafe. Many beautiful birds and a paved pathway to see various animals. We saw birds, kangaroos, emus, reptiles and a koala. It was busy but festive on the weekend we went. Overall a great place to visit.
BLS — Google review
Great for a family day out or a place to hang with friends. There are plenty of spots to sit and have a picnic, including picnic tables. Kids area is great. Cafe has a good selection - all sorts of flavoured croissants, biscuits and cakes, as well as a full menu of breakfast and lunch food. I had a Nutella cookie and it was extremely good! The main nature walk includes koalas, wallabys, lizards, frogs, and birds of all sorts. The emu and kangaroo area is always good to walk around. There are plenty of walking tracks through the reserve. Entry is free, but parking is not. Not really any public transport options, and the road outside the reserve is pretty dangerous to try to cross and theres minimal space to walk on that side of the road. Very much not walkable to there if you live nearby.
Ysobel S — Google review
I've always loved Blackbutt and spent many happy hours there as a child, with my children and now grand children. But honestly, charging for parking? Any wonder the car park was empty, a disgraceful grab for cash.

Public swimming pool
Historical landmark
Located on the coastline, Bogey Hole is a stunning ocean rock pool that was hand-carved by convicts in 1819. It's an iconic attraction in Newcastle and offers a unique swimming experience. The area around Bogey Hole also features King Edward Park, which boasts Norfolk Island pines, a sunken garden, historical building remains, and breathtaking ocean views.
So much fun, definitely can be dangerous and you need to be careful. Probably best not to attempt when the tide is high. But good managed risky fun for sure. We loved it
T N — Google review
Wonderful views of a nice ocean pool rich in history. Would be nice if there was some signage to explain the history. Very steep stairs and platform for access to the water. Gets plenty of flushing from the ocean as any waves splash into it. Great for viewing sunset and whales/dolphins and seals at.
L. K — Google review
Beautiful place to visit in the evening. The breeze and beach view is amazing. If you are swimmer, this is the place for you to take a dip and enjoy running sea water. And you can wave at skydiving people as well.
Kasuni S — Google review
A nice surprise at the end of the memorial walk. A green rock pool with rough waves pounding its side mercilessly. I saw groups of people descending to the pool swimming and snorkeling. Even some dogs enjoyed a bit of water actions.
Nick Q — Google review
Fantastic place for a swim or a relaxing afternoon lazing on the rocks. Not alot of places to stash you stuff. Water is cold, but enjoyable on a warm day. Bit of a walk from the roadway, but nothing to strenuous. Avoid cutting through the gardens as it leads to some high terraces to get down.
Justan K — Google review
Absolutely awesome place! Waves crush in and the pool practically replenishes itself. Love it
Callmedani — Google review
Go there for a short swim, bring your tiny picnic with you. 🏊‍♀️🧺 You do not get this kind of exceptional opportunities by mother nature. 🌿 It is a really fantastic nature pool. ✨ #Swim #Picnic #Nature #Pool #Opportunities

Very pretty! Lovely to go when it warm and you want to enjoy the ocean without all the sand! Clear water. The steps may pose an issue to some with less mobility, but other than that very good! Be careful when putting your clothes on the ground, put them higher so the waves don't wet them.

War memorial
Sights & Landmarks
The Newcastle Memorial Walk is a breathtaking 450-meter clifftop pathway that not only offers stunning views of the ocean and cityscape but also serves as a heartfelt tribute to those who served in World War I. Stretching from Strzelecki Lookout to Bar Beach, this walkway features impressive steel silhouettes of soldiers, inscribed with nearly 4,000 names of local heroes.
The Newcastle Memorial Walk is one of the most beautiful and meaningful places I’ve visited. Set along the coastline, it offers stunning panoramic views of the ocean, cliffs, and surrounding city - especially during sunrise or sunset. The walkway itself is well-maintained and not too long, making it an easy and enjoyable walk for people of all ages. What makes it truly special is its tribute to the ANZAC soldiers and the region’s history. Along the walk, there are steel silhouettes of soldiers and the names of thousands of local men and women who served in World War I. It’s both moving and respectful, adding a deeper sense of purpose to what could otherwise be just a scenic stroll. The walk also connects with the Bathers Way, so it’s a great part of a longer coastal walk if you want to explore more. Whether you’re there for the views, the history, or just a quiet moment to reflect, it’s worth the visit. It’s a place where natural beauty and history come together perfectly. If you’re in Newcastle, I’d highly recommend taking some time to experience the Memorial Walk, it really leaves a lasting impression.
Subas S — Google review
The walking trail from **Merewether Beach** to **King Edward Park Lookout** is about 6 km return. I enjoyed a wonderful 1.5-hour walk on a delightful afternoon. The weather was perfect, the beach was absolutely stunning, and the sunset created a magical atmosphere. Along the way, I saw many people walking, exercising, and enjoying their time, which made the whole experience even more lively and enjoyable.

Beautiful coastal walk with stunning ocean views and a touching tribute to ANZACs. Easy to access, peaceful, and perfect for a morning stroll or sunset visit. A must-do in Newcastle!

Beautiful, brisk wintery walk. Quite windy—consider yourself warned! Don’t wear your favorite hat unless you’re sure it’s going to stay put. A lovely walk with even lovelier views!

Nice short walk that gives you a great views of the ocean and city. You also get to know more about the history of ANZAC during WW1. I recommend going here to view the sunset.
Rejean B — Google review
Great coastal walk along some of Newcastle's best beaches like Bar Beach, Merewether Beach. You can walk all the way to Newcastle and spot a hang glider or 2.
Michelle C — Google review
Wonderful coastline walk with well documented military history along the way. Plenty of parking at either end. Dogs not permitted but they are permitted along the existing footpath which follows the walk on the street. Lots of stairs and hill down to Bar beach. Would recommend.

If you're on the hunt for a unique dining experience in Newcastle, The Flotilla should definitely be on your list. This charming venue radiates a relaxed yet stylish vibe, featuring cozy tan banquette seating and an impressive kitchen bar that draws you in. A striking wrought iron spiral staircase adds to its aesthetic appeal.
I love the set menu, no decision anxiety and I know everything will be amazing at Flotilla. I tried some delicious things I probably would not have ordered if it had been up to me to choose. A delightful evening, attentive service, wonderful cocktails (loved the Si Chef), happy with the value for money. We’ll be back!

Such a delight! Beautiful, understated, and relaxed restaurant. Forgot I was in Wickham and not the Hunter Valley. The service was perfect. We had the express lunch menu which was so delicious and perfectly portioned. The flavours complimented each other so so well. Cocktails were also divine! Thank you for a lovely experience.
Sofia S — Google review
The dining experience was enjoyable overall. The food was well-prepared and flavorful, though the portion sizes were a bit smaller than expected. The tables are placed quite close together, which can make private conversations difficult.
D D — Google review
Beautiful space, relaxed pace and excellent knowledgeable service. Food presentation was beautiful. A very expensive night ( mind you we did Chefs menu with paired wines) and while it was a great evening, the price tag for amount of food was a little disappointing. Would go back for a very special occasion in future. Had dined once before in past and found food this time around not as wow on flavours.
Wendy B — Google review
We visited The Flotilla for our 10th wedding anniversary and it was truly an extraordinary experience. The care and attention from the staff was excellent, they took care of us warmly and with good humour all night. We were seated at the bar overlooking the kitchen so had a front row to the food prep which added to the overall experience. The food itself was excellent, perfectly balanced, flavoured and seasoned. We will definitely be back, what a wonderful night!

Absolutely love dining at Flotilla, the food is presented beautifully & seriously delicious, the scallop ravioli amazing! The service is impeccable & polished, then add the fabulous wine collaboration with DeIuliis Wines! Thoroughly recommend, love my local
Vicki W — Google review
I have been here 3 times now and my partner and I have promised to come back every 6 weeks when the menu changes because every time we come, the food is just outstanding. Had to bring my dad here for Father’s Day and he couldn’t believe how amazing the food was. It was so nice to be able to share this experience with him. There’s always something you’ve never tried and the weird food pairings surprisingly never disappoint. Hands down, best fine dining experience in Newcastle.

Wine bar
Located at 87-89 Hunter St, Newcastle, Humbug is a neighborhood restaurant and wine bar founded by Michael Portley and Stephanie Wells. The couple brings their extensive experience from popular Australian restaurants to create a cozy atmosphere for couples and larger groups. Their evolving menu features pasta, snacks, and an all-sustainable wine list. With Portley's culinary expertise and Wells' background as an event stylist turned sommelier, the dining experience at Humbug promises to be exceptional.
Charlotte took really good care of us and made sure we had an amazing night celebrating my husband's birthday. She was quite informative and helpful. She was also quite knowledgeable with wine selections and suggestions. The team also added a sparkler on our desert plate. It's the small things that made our night really special. We ordered the "Feed Me" option and the food tasted amazing and portions and dishes were just right. There were 8 dishes all up we added an extra meal. Price point is perfect for what you receive! We highly recommend this restaurant. Keep it up Humbug, we love what you have created!

Incredible food, friendly staff and impeccable service. Comfortable seats even at the bar tables! Favourite dish was easily the pumpkin agnolotti, though the sourdough focaccia with the pickles + butter came a close second. Every dish was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looks.

It was our first night in Newcastle after a long drive, The service was amazing. The weight staff was very accommodating to our noisy kids. We had one of each pasta available on the menu that night and it was not disappointing!! Love how they cater for my lactose intolerant kid! They offered him vegan Mac and cheese which is perfect!!

I visited in early March for my partners birthday. Finally got around doing a review on this place. The service, the moment we walked in was very attentive, the host was happy to provide recommendations and explain some of the dishes. All the dishes were delicious, most notable the pasta. They have a great wine list which will pair great with the meals. Highly recommend this place and will be sure to visit again when I’m in Newcastle again.

We’re from Melbourne and came to Sydney for a short trip. We found this place through Google reviews, and even though it wasn’t open when we first came at lunch, we actually waited until dinner just to try it — it was totally worth the wait! We ordered a la carte instead of the set menu, and every single dish was perfectly seasoned and just so delicious. Honestly, this might be my number one restaurant ever. We love you guys — thank you for the amazing food and warm vibes! 💛

Wine by the glass: Rosé san Lorenzo "de vera" rosato, montepulciano sangiovassi 2022 -marche Italy -glass -vegan Humbug has an amazing wine list which stars an exclusively all sustainable wine list curated precisely by the manager Stephanie This was recommended as an option that would pair across my intended dishes And I agreed to the likelihood. Entré: I was recommended a half serve of each other the two vegan starters which I really appreciated so as to try both. 1x Zucchini flower, stuffed smoked almond, red pepper romesco, mint and leaves Smokey, slightly spicy yet softened by the almond stuffing Half serve 2x mushroom dumplings with a XO sauce. These were smokey and meaty, yet delicate and delicious complemented perfectly by the subtle Xo sauce that worked well with the mushrooms and sip of rose. Both half entre/ appetizers were vegan. My wine complemented the creamy nature of the almond stuffing, but the acidity of the wine clashed with the red pepper romesco slightly. The mid palate texture softened and soothed this though so beyond the initial taste I enjoyed the pairing. Main: The vegan Pistachio pesto Malfadine, Rappa, green olives, lemon. Fun and perfectly aldente. These strands always make me feel like I am eating something like octopus tentacles as the shape of the malfadine is so fun, and no octopus' were harmed 😅 The aldente texture of the pasta, enhanced by flecks of hard pistachios atop the pistachio pesto worked seamlessly. The green olives and raisins added an interesting flavor to make the bites more complex. Though this pasta was not an effective pair with the sangiovasi / montepulciano rose, But I expected this having only ordered 1 glass. Coconut panna cottage, mandarin granito. This was the perfect digestive. The mandarin granito tasted closer to grapefruit, sour acidic and a lovely refreshing finish to the meal. Paired wonderfully by my main server Ebony with a Scarborough hunter valley late harvest semillon. What a fantastic dessert. -vegan The manager Stephanie was a charismatic and passionate young lady who spoke with such passion about her ideas and structure of her menu and wine list. Wow, Humbug, I understand the rave, you so seamlessly wove my experience into a memorable culinary tale with precision and care. This is a wonderful restaurant for a sole dinner. Aswell as couples, and groups small and large. Thankyou🙏 I was checked on attentively and the servers seemed to care of my experience.

Nagisa is a casual eatery with minimalist decor and draped walls, located on the harbors edge. It offers traditional Japanese cuisine with a modern twist, including sashimi, sushi, and noodles. The restaurant features an impeccably designed indoor dining area as well as an alfresco setting for balmy nights. Food was delicious and service was exceptional! First time dining here for dinner and was definitely impressed . I ordered a variety of dishes to try each had their own unique taste . We were that full we couldn't finish all our food so definitely were full and satisfied. Price for dishes were reasonable.
Bevlyn O — Google review
We really enjoyed the food here it's a bit more expensive but the quality of the sashimi and food was delicious. Everything tasted great and received professional service. If you want refined japanese food this is the place! The drinks menu has quite the selection and such a nice spot too.

Absolutely incredible dining experience at Nagisa! The service was warm, attentive, and genuine from start to finish. Every dish we tried was a standout!!! The sashimi was incredibly fresh, the temaki and wagyu were perfectly prepared, and the desserts were next level. Highly recommend the apple pie fried dumpling, banoffee fried dumpling, and the refreshing yuzu sorbet. Every bite was a 10/10. Can’t wait to come back!!!
Alexis G — Google review
We came up from Sydney to eat here would happily do it again - the food was incredible! Sashimi was some of the best I’ve ever had, incredibly fresh and big portions of both sashimi and chicken karaage. The highlight was definitely the banoffee gyoza - would come back just for this! Our server was also so lovely (didn’t catch her name but she had a nose piercing), very friendly and accommodating when we needed to change our reservation time last minute. Can’t wait to come back!

This felt like such an authentic taste of Japanese cuisine. We had the tasting banquet for two, and didn't we try some dishes! We couldn't get over the simplicity and yet complexity of each bite. And the staff were absolutely lovely and happy to help in any way.

My wife's japanese and I've lived there for years, so rarely find something this good. Loved it, expensive but the location and detail make up for it.
Evanterrigal G — Google review
Restaurant & staff were great. The waitress was lovely & helpful. The food let it down unfortunately. We have eaten at a number of Japanese restaurants and this wouldn't even make the top 10. It was a let down from the hyped reviews. Cucumber salad must have been prepared at lunch time as it was soggy not crunchy & fresh, charage chicken was sadly overcooked. It was enjoyable experience but the food let it down. We have had better Japanese in Newcastle & Maitland for less. We had high hopes given the premium pricing & reviews.

Our whole experience tonight at Nagisa was nothing less than perfect. The staff were super friendly and explained each meal as it arrived. We ordered a variety of dishes, each was timed perfectly to get to our table, beautifully presented, and the taste was next level. The Sashimi tasting plate was our favourite and we couldn’t leave without ordering a second round. We then ordered one of each dessert ( even though we couldn’t fit another bite in ) just to see if our food experience could get any better. We were blown away!! My husband and I frequent a lot of local venues, and I don’t usually rave about a restaurant but I just cannot fault our experience tonight. We will definitely be returning to Nagisa and can’t wait to bring our friends and family to experience everything we did tonight.

Antojitos in Newcastle West offers a taste of California-Mexican street food in a laid-back setting. The restaurant, known for serving up thousands of burritos and tacos annually, is housed in a spacious warehouse adorned with a VW van. With its no-frills ambiance and red plastic trays, the eatery exudes an authentic taqueria vibe.
As a person who has had authentic Mexican and Hispanic food it's been hard to find here in Australia. But this is authentic flavours and spices. So happy we found this spot we've kept coming back its one of our fav. Restaurants and we love the atmosphere.

Loved the food!! But the table and chairs we were sat at were not comfortable at all. Food service was pretty slow (it was a busy night) but I was watching people who had ordered after us receive their meals before us. Would probably go again if I was in the city though. Spanish restaurant
Bocados Spanish Kitchen is a beloved restaurant located at the corner of King and Watt Street in Newcastle, offering authentic Spanish flavors in a warm and intimate setting. The restaurant has been serving up delicious contemporary cuisine for over a decade, with popular dishes like pan con tomate, tortilla Espanola, gambas al ajillo, and chorizo a la romesco. This family-owned eatery delivers vibrant and zesty Spanish dishes alongside South American tapas in its chic interior space.
We were really excited to try this Spanish restaurant and it did not disappoint. We sat outside on a hot summer night and enjoyed the sun as it set and changed the colours of our beautiful city. The location and liveliness of the outside seating only added to the overall vibe which was fun, lively and vibrant. We started with fresh olives which were beyond exceptional and paired with the sangria was a match made in summer heaven. We had some shared plates - all of which were perfectly portioned and tasted incredible. The staff were amazing and highly knowledgeable on the menu. We loved this place!

Found this little gem escaping a downpour of rain. Great, friendly service with a gorgeous smile. Food was so delicious we ate before photos. Lamb shank on tasty potato puree, tasty meatballs in mouthwatering tomato sauce and fresh, salty whitebait. We did snap dessert because it was so impressive and delicious also. Affogato and chocolate tart on caramel sauce. Definitely try these.

Had our first dinner experience tonight. Was not quite what we expected. Ordered 2 meals - lamb shank and negros paella. The lamb came first - weird as usually seafood is served before heavy meat dishes due to complexity of flavour. It was tasty but would have loved to have seen a few greens with it. Small and meat heavy. Paella next - designed as share plates so serving 3 prawns and 3 mussels per couple really doesn’t make sense. It really costs nothing to pop in a few more prawns and mussels to make this a great meal. The flavours were great but seafood non existent. Probably won’t return as left feeling short changed. Staff very pleasant but value for money not so much. Seriously to add an extra prawn or 2 would cost them nothing…..
