Museum
The Castlemaine Art Museum, established in 1913 and located in a heritage-listed art deco building, boasts a remarkable collection of Australian art. With a strong focus on traditional landscape painting and works by women artists, the museum's holdings include nationally significant Tonal Realism paintings. The museum features five gallery spaces that host changing exhibitions throughout the year.
One of the first and best art gallery I have ever been to.I went there during winters. It showed some of the best masterpieces by the first nation people. The volunteer was very sweet and even selected a bookmark for me which I adore. Overall a wonderful experience.
Simran G — Google review
Awesome small art museum with an impressive collection including some 20th century Australian masters such as Fred Williams, Jeffrey Smart and Charles Blackman. When I visited they also had some excellent works by first nations and women artists on display too.

Don't miss the nice place in the charming town of Castlemaine. Recommend to anyone interested in Australian art and history. The museum's collection of Australian art is truly outstanding. Friendly stafffs.

A regional gem. Housed in a historic building, the curator has chosen an interesting theme. We had a great time visiting the three galleries. Don't forget to visit the museum downstairs.
Zeki A — Google review
Wonderful art museum, I love the Art Deco facade! Great paintings from some local artists and some older famous ones such as Fred Williams, Frederick McCubbin and Margaret Preston. Great day out.
Richard J — Google review
What a fabulous art museum. A must visit
Bernadette D — Google review
The brief tour was good, quite informative. I didn't care for the negative stereotypes of the first nations people but I do applaud them for having the artistic guts to put them on display. Decent history though an oxymoron on a few levels.
Debra B — Google review
Can’t believe this is not permanently government funded. It’s a good place to duck in to find out about the history of Castlemaine (downstairs) and upstairs it’s an eclectic mix of art. There is something for every art to get inspiration from with such diversity of techniques used.

Gardens
Located at 2 Walker Street, Castlemaine Botanical Gardens feature a diverse collection of exotic and native tree species. The park offers an ornamental lake, children's playground, tea rooms, and BBQ facilities, making it an ideal venue for various events like parties and weddings. Castlemaine itself is a significant rural center with impressive heritage buildings and a renowned art gallery.
This afternoon, my parents and I had a brief visit at the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, located in the corner of Downes Street and Walker Street. It was a lovely warm partly cloudy day with a top of 18 degrees. There are multiple walking paths and entry points at this Botanical Gardens. We decided to walk around one of the shorter circuits, part of which hugs the edge of Lake Joanna. This lake features a small "bird island" plus a variety of different water birds including Mallard Duck, Pacific Black Duck and Australian Wood Duck. Like many other Botanical Gardens, there's also a huge variety of trees to appreciate here including Weeping Willow, English Oak, English Yew, Velvet Ash, Deodar Cedar and Cedar of Lebanon. It also features a Rotunda, Rose Garden, Summer House, Tearooms, a Highland Pipe Band, a Playground, a water fountain, park benches and picnic tables. Being a Sunday afternoon, there were lots of people here enjoying the Gardens. It's certainly a wonderful place to check out if you're visiting Castlemaine or nearby towns.

Was a beautiful day for a walk with our dogs around the park. Some enjoyable little chats with others along the way. We really enjoyed soaking in the beautiful trees.

Visited the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens on the last day of Autumn and it was a magi al experience. There were a lot of colours still to see and the kids loved the play area. A must visit place and a lovely 1.5hr drive from Melbourne city.

Great garden to visit and take a rest in the town, anytime, any seasons.

Good track for a pram in wet weather, undercover area, playground and toilets close by. (DAS coffeehouse is very close, and very good) Plus some friendly ducks that like to follow you around.
Erin W — Google review
Beautiful place. Went for a drive so my learner driver could get some experience and it was the perfect drive for it. Got to the gardens and it was a beautiful day beautiful scenery and a beautiful walk with the family and the dog. Was able to get some lunch first and sit at one of the many tables to eat.

A beautiful botanic Gardens for this lovely country town. Great playground for the kids. Bridges over a little creek, lots of flowers and beautiful big trees. Large areas under shade with also big open areas. Nice location too, though next to the train line... Kids love it, but it is slightly loud (think you'd get used to it though) - and fur next to The Mill precinct. Would definitely spend more time at the gardens next time we visit!
Kara R — Google review
A beautiful gardens really. Great for walking around, Saturday fun runs, and mediations. I love most, that the gardens were built by the prisoners of the jail. Making beautiful spaces for contributions with Us All.

Flea market

The Mill Castlemaine, originally established in 1875 as the Castlemaine Woollen Mill and later transformed into Victoria Carpets, has now become a vibrant hub for artisan manufacturing and food. The on-site food precinct features a variety of culinary delights such as a Viennese coffee house, winemakers, sourdough baker, craft brewery, smallgoods maker, cheese and dairy producer, chocolatier and ice cream maker.
Fabulously huge undercover area showcasing antiques and curios, artwork works and craft works, crockery and cutlery and almost anything else you couldn’t think of. Air conditioned but not icy cold. Well maintained Public toilets. Even a section at the front with a stack of arcade games for the kids (& big kids) for when they enviably get bored. Like a big supermarket, you just pay at the end when you exit, not with individual stall owners. Outside are eateries, sweeteries (?! Chocolates and ice cream), coffee, local artists, and a beautiful living green shady arch. Well worth a stop to fill your day.
Aly M — Google review
The Mills in Castlemaine is such a vibe! Cool mix of vintage shops, art, and food. Loved wandering around and finding random treasures. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in town.
Brooke P — Google review
Brought my parents to browse through flea market with collections of antiques, collectibles, records and clothes and much more. Good collection of stuff and you could easily spent a good two hours! Spacious spot and friendly staff.
Saravanand N — Google review
Das Kaffeehaus is fantastic. Great coffee and food in an industrial meets glamour setting, with a charming matrade who makes everyone smile. The antique bazaar ensures that you go home with everything you didn't know you wanted. There's icecream and other stores as well as ample parking, oh yes and a craft beer brewery. A brilliant destination.
Carole P — Google review
I fell on love with Castlemaine because of the mill. The chocolate shop was amazing. The German coffee shop was special
Jane D — Google review
The mill was a great place to spend a day. The antiques fair was a great way to spend a morning looking around all the many stalls. Then wander around the food vendors not forgetting to stop at the chocolate shop. Highly recommend.

One of the best ever vintage markets with a great brewery restaurant too

The flea market has something for everyone and is huge. I’m not sure that there are too many bargains but if you are looking for something nostalgic or some vintage clothing then this is a great spot to stop. Cafes and bars close by.

Buda Historic Home & Garden is a captivating destination that offers visitors a fascinating journey back to the gold rush era. This historic residence, once home to a Hungarian silversmith and his family for over 120 years, showcases an impressive collection of art, jewelry, and period furnishings that reflect late nineteenth and early twentieth-century life in Australia.
It was a Victorian era home now converted into museum. Even though the entry fees was 12$ yet the overall experience especially the picturesque views from the garden made it all worth. The volunteer working there is very kind and helpful. I still remember her kind gesture towards me. If you want to dive in some history while enjoying the views that castlemaine offers this is the place to be .
Simran G — Google review
Really enjoyed learning about the fascinating creative Leviny family - former owners of this house; the home and the garden are very charming. I even saw some kangaroos grazing in the far part of the garden. Thank you to the staff and volunteers for sharing their knowledge of history with visitors and maintaining this place so well.
Anima S — Google review
Fantastic museum recording over a century of family and art history, with an absolutely stunning garden. Volunteers are helpful and informative and the museum is very well interpreted
Rachel T — Google review
Brought my parents to check out this place. Very well kept and they have managed to retain the family antiques and well preserved history with a charming back story. Beautiful garden but could do with a bit more work. They did say it’s run by volunteers. The workers are all friendly and informative. Don’t miss it if you are passing through Castlemain.

I took a group of 20 to Buda where we enjoyed a lovely 2 course lunch and a tour of the magnificent gardens and homestead. What a brilliant experience we had learning from the volunteers about the historic meaning of the home and gardens. Definitely worth a visit!!

Buda Historic Home and Garden, nestled in the heart of Castlemaine, Australia, is a captivating destination that transports visitors back to the Victorian era. Stepping onto the meticulously maintained grounds, one is immediately struck by the charm and tranquility that permeates the air. The centerpiece of Buda is the historic home itself, once the residence of the influential Leviny family. As you wander through its corridors and rooms, each meticulously preserved detail offers a glimpse into the lives of its former occupants. From period furnishings to family heirlooms, the house is a testament to Victorian elegance and refinement. Venturing outside, the lush gardens of Buda beckon exploration. Designed in the style of an English cottage garden, they boast a colorful array of flowers, fragrant herbs, and meandering pathways. Every turn reveals a new vista, inviting visitors to pause and soak in the beauty of their surroundings. One of the highlights of Buda is its rich cultural program, which includes guided tours, workshops, and events throughout the year. Beautiful house, volunteer staff are very informative and helpful. They were having a live drawing session on the gardens, the models dressed up in their best vintage outfits. Wonderful history, recommended 👌

Beautiful historic home in Castlemaine which is a small town north west of Melbourne. If you are into history and like period homes you will like this one. A beautiful garden surrounding the house which was my favourite. It was very quite and peaceful where the location of the house is. The house itself is not very big so it won’t take more than an hour or hour and half at lost to enjoy all of the property. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Castlemaine.

Live music venue
The Theatre Royal is a historic 1850s theater that has been continuously in use since its construction. It serves as a venue for mainstream and arthouse films, as well as live music performances. The building features art deco details and also houses a cafe and beer garden, offering visitors an all-encompassing entertainment experience. Additionally, the theater hosts various events featuring talented musicians from different genres, making it a must-visit destination for music enthusiasts.
Visited the most wonderful venue, Theatre Royal, to watch Diesel do his magical stuff on the 28th of August. My mobility is not great due to a broken hip & thigh. I’m walking with a cane, but can’t bend my leg. We flagged that with the doorman, & he found 2 seats for my friend & I to sit on the end of a row, out of everyone’s way. On leaving the venue, given I’m still a bit unsteady, the same wonderful guy, waited with me at the front, while my friend brought the car up & helped me into the car. Tick Tick Tick for this venue & I highly recommend such a caring & genuine venue for anyone mobile or immobile. Can’t wait for our next gig.

Wow! I’ve been here for multiple nights out and seen some great performances. So far everything has been great! I do wish they served hot food a little later, and it would be great if they had a little more accessibility for people in wheelchairs. I will keep coming back again and again!
Melissa — Google review
So blessed to have a local venue which can accommodate quality artists in an unpretentious laid back way. Long may it remain.
Russell M — Google review
Great laid back vibe with a problem when it comes to sound of live music. The problem is the sound in the venue is consistently mixed poorly IMO. The sound system is good, this seems to be a mixing issue. I have noticed time and time again there is almost no usual guitar in the mix. The volume is consistently way too low, confined to one side of the stage with the opposite side getting absolutely no guitar from the speakers at all. There should be some guitar on both sides of the stage with the balance going to the guitarist. During a solo, the guitar is way too quiet. During one performance for example, a signature lick was inaudible and all of a sudden the mixing desk realized and turned it up. Unfortunately it was the last song of the encore. The drum mix is excessively bass heavy drowning out vocals. The volume is good, loud and fairly tight - that part of it is fine, but the bass depth overwhelms during performance. The depth would be tolerable if all the other instruments and vocals were raised in comparison and some guitar on the opposite side of the stage, though really some less bass might help brighten the soundstage. I like punchy bass, but gratuitous bass too the detriment of musical detail is what I'm talking about here. If you're on the opposite side of the venue to the guitarist then there's no guitar for you. It is impossible to hear drum skins being hit by drum sticks, rhythm guitar detail, keyboards and vocals in a balanced way. This is not a peculiarity of the venue. I do not believe it is a sound system issue either. The performers would never know this because they're listening to themselves via the fold back. A lot of the musical detail is consistently lost in this venue and much of what the audience hears is actually off the foldback even though to us it is facing backwards. To be sure I am not a sound recording engineer, but I certainly know the sound here is not that great from an audience POV. I've seen a lot of live music and this venue could be easily better. My hearing is tested annually for my line of work so I'm not going deaf.

Been meaning to chill out here for years and now finally doing so with a delicious red wine before heading off to Mt Franklin to set up camp . I’m doing my Daylesford Station Market stall tomorrow selling my Cejuvenate Orange Peel Powder (an anti-inflammatory) Love the décor & atmosphere! Staff are really friendly & smiles abound, it’s so important in Hospitality! Will be back for pizza as they look good (next table is enjoying one).

Went there on a Tuesday with my partner, had a couple of pizzas, couple of wines and stayed for the 7:30 movie session. A lovely evening, the couches in the cinema are very comfy and that fact you can take your dinner into the cinema is great!

The food is absolutely delicious and the service excellent.. we had breakfast there and it was delicious, the eggs were done perfectly, the bacon delicious and the mushrooms.. yum.. the coffee was really good.. all in all the breakfast was delicious and without a shadow of a doubt, the next time we are in Castlemaine.. Run Rabbit Run will be our go to for breakfast and lunch.. so do yourself a favour go to Run Rabbit Run.. you won’t be disappointed

I'm up from Melbourne, in Castlemaine at the moment house sitting for a family member, I'm mad keen for a brunch and had tried another local option the previous day, This time I've found Run, Rabbit, Run, Their poached eggs on toast was majestic, you can tell they use quality ingredients and the coffee is on point too, certainly happy with the quality of the food on the menu. The front of house staff are quick to get you seated and served and the Barista works her craft like magic, the coffee is impressive. Certainly can recommend if you appreciate a decent meal, the menu is basic, however they do it very well and at the end of the day, that's all that matters. Keep up the great work guys.
Ken B — Google review
Great food and reasonable prices for the above standard food quality. Not over crowded but I don't know why as it's one of the nicest places to eat in Castlemaine. Way better food and value than other places in this area. Service can be slow as they spend time chatting to customers but I do like the friendly experience.

I went to run rabbit run last week. We were about to leave when a waiter suddenly froze and insisted that we call an ambulance! he had smelled my wife's blood sugar and it was dangerously low! when the ambulance didn't come he gave her emergency CPR! She had been dead for ten minutes when he pulled a defibrilator from his pocket and SAVED HER LIFE!! its so nice to see that this cafe has in its employment people who are trained in such emergencies. If it wasn't for Archie my wife would be dead!! lovely place, great food ( I had the lettuce) . Calm atmosphere, would recommend to any diabetics.

Popped in for a coffee and a croissant. Best cafe ever! Absolutely delicious coffee and I haven’t had such a good croissant since I was last in France. Can’t recommend Run Rabbit Run enough. They also have a load of goods to buy, we brought a birthday card (awesome design of native birds). If you’re passing through Castlemaine, this is definitely where you want to stop.

Delicious crispy and generous corn fritter with bacon, avocado and a fresh salsa. Beautifully presented. Iced chocolate which preceded it was also right on the money. Service from Helen was also thoughtful. Only negative was that they wouldn't allow two of us to sit at a table of four (which wasn't taken whilst we were there) by the window.
D. B — Google review
Stopped here on Sunday after a visit to a local antiques fair. To their credit this place remained open, whilst a number of eateries in Castlemaine were closed. Run, Rabbit, Run was quite busy, and nearly all the indoor tables were full. Enjoy a BLAT and a refreshing local apple cider. Reasonably priced, good food, but the menu is very limiting. Thanks for a nice lunch

Nestled in the heart of Castlemaine, the Railway Hotel is a charming family-owned establishment that dates back to the mid-1800s, making it a true gem from the gold boom era. This historic pub boasts an inviting woodsy atmosphere adorned with vintage knick-knacks and artifacts that tell tales of yesteryear.
Not what you’d expect from the outside! Fantastic little bistro/bar offering loads to choose from. Good selection of vegetarian offering too. Reasonably priced given the portions sizes which are more than ample. Service friendly and beer cold. Just what you need!

What a great place for dinner. Plenty of parking across the road. It's pub style, so order from the counter. The decor is great, a feast for the eyes. And the place is packed so it pays to book in advance. Staff are friendly and helpful even when they were busy. We had the grilled barramundi on the rice. Well cooked and full of flavours. Remember to eat the fish together with the salad to enjoy the rounded flavours of the seasoning. It has chilli and lime etc. A bit of Thai style. The prawn skewers complement the fish. We would highly recommend this place.

What a ripper!! Ambience, creativity, amazing food and an excellent wine list make this place top notch. I had the best gnocchi I have ever eaten. I’m not a massive gnocchi fan but was keen to try a sweet potato gnocchi with broccoli and tomato sauce. Absolutely outstanding. Kudos to all the team for showcasing your beautiful venue. Highly recommended 👏

Stopped at this cafe for afternoon tea but if you have a nut allergy you may just want a soft drink. Had beautiful cakes but each one had nuts of some kind, almonds, walnuts, coconut so not much choice.

Gorgeous cafe, great menu with fresh food and plenty of variety. Lots of seating on the ground floor with air conditioning, and a cute shaded rooftop area too. I had the salade niçoise, which was very fresh and delicious, an almond and ginger slice and a coffee. All great, good coffee. Highly recommend! Would be fine for kids, especially in downstairs area.
Jen S — Google review
The food and atmosphere was perfect and the young waitress serving us was very professional. The older female staff member - perhaps the barista - was embarrassingly rude and her behaviour appalling. My husband was spoken to so rudely by her because he started drinking the wrong coffee which was given to him and not explained that it was decaf. This woman had absolutely no tact, was unnecessarily rude and was quite loud about it and felt she had the right to school my husband about drinking the wrong coffee in front of his visiting mother and family group as well as everyone in the vicinity. Spending over $160 for lunch for six people left a very bitter taste after receiving that serving from her. If she cannot handle a busy cafe perhaps she needs to find another job, preferably not dealing with paying customers. What should have been a lovely lunch with family was just horrible dealing with her ugly attitude.

Love this spot. Probably the best pizza in town. Staff are all super friendly and the pizzas are rock solid. The restaurant is always toasty and smells great from the oven. My only gripe is the tiramisu portions are a little on the small side but I won't dock any stars because everything else is great.

Old fashioned hospitality with a smile and at an affordable price to enable one to visit time and time again. No need for a device, there a books and music (blend of Italian tunes mixed with Swing and jazz)… today I felt nostalgic and grateful that there is still goodness in the world thanks to those who show up with passion, care and a smile. Wild Food and Wine is a top dining spot in Castlemaine, offering a flexible dining experience and a fantastic atmosphere. Situated in the charming setting of a former fire station on 26a Templeton St, this modern Australian restaurant serves meticulously crafted meals, including delectable desserts and fresh seafood.
As always our local go-to when we want a special meal out with friends. Consistently good and our friends agree. When in Castlemaine, don’t give Wild a miss!

The food here is spectacular, with really unique flavours and high quality ingredients. Loved every single dish they served. (Side note: you can buy their pear and date chutney in jars and you really should as it’s delicious - goes really well with halloumi.) As it used to be a fire station, the interior has a really unique and charming vibe too. Most importantly, the owner, Toby, seems to be a really decent human being and clearly takes great pride in his business (deservedly so!). Well worth a visit if you’re anywhere near Castlemaine.

Very busy Saturday evening and they were short-staffed but managed perfectly. Started with limoncello spritz and then moved to the recommended rosé. Plump Pacific Bay oysters with shallot and Chardonnay vinegar were a great starter. Highly recommend! Eggplant and smoked mozzarella croquettes and the barramundi wing were incredible too! Then we shared a selection of dishes for mains, the duck pappardelle and crispy pork belly were the real highlights but everything was just so good.
Melissa T — Google review
This place was absolutely amazing. From the moment you step in the staff are friendly and helpful. Then there was the Rose which paired perfectly with our choices of the exquisite food. We then had desert with coffee cocktails. I absolutely cannot fault a thing. Highly recommend Wild!!

Came here on a recommendation. The service and staff are excellent. The cocktails were great. As was the wine. We ordered the kingfish, the lamb meatballs, the cos salad, the pork croquet, the oysters the steak and the tarts. The pork croquets were a little bland but the rest of the food was fantastic. We'll be back for sure and recommend this place for anyone wanting a quality restaurant experience in the area. Well done to all the staff for such a pleasant experience.

Enjoyed a delightful meal in an old converted fire station. Delicious, fresh flavours from a charming menu. I doubt there is ever a bad disk served here. Appreciated the non- alcoholic items available on the drinks menu. Would have tried the desserts and cheese board but too full after entrees salads and mains. Only disappointment was no coffee available.

Dinner at Wild was the most wonderful experience. The venue is absolutely gorgeous and really sets the scene for a night of excellent eating. The service was fantastic, and every dish was delicious. Highlights were the Jerusalem artichokes, beef cheeks, and ricotta doughnuts. Coming from Melbourne with high expectations when dining out, I can't recommend this place enough. Can't wait to return for another night of pure joy!

The tourist brochure trumpets that Castlemaine is a foodie haven & Wild sure lives up to it👍👌 The owners wait the tables - so you get proper knowledgeable service. Mains are fine dining quality at reasonable prices & desserts are delish. Former heritage fire station has been given an edgy makeover - so the whole dining experience is top notch. Pre-booking is a must & there are 2 sessions for dinner. Recommend the pork belly & dauphinoise potatoes. Half roast chicken can be shared & side of roast potatoes is divine. Coconut pannacotta is light & tasty.
