Specialty Museums
The Khon Kaen National Museum, established in 1972, is a captivating destination in Khon Kaen. It showcases a diverse range of exhibits centered around the art, history, and archaeology of Khon Kaen and Thailand. The museum's collection includes artifacts from the prehistoric era, Dvaravati culture, Khmer culture, as well as insights into the evolution of art in Khon Kaen and the local way of life.
There are not a lot of things to do in Khon Kaen town, and I'm tired of all the temples, but the National Museum is the best place to see if you're into, or want to know more about Isaan history. I really enjoyed my time here. The ticket for Thai nationals is 20 Baht, for foreigners (a.k.a. Farang) it's 200 Baht. It's not as big as the National Museum in Bangkok, but it's really interesting here.
Akira K — Google review
Nice and intersting museum but not big and I think 200 Baht is too much for what they show, I think a fair price should be 100 Baht or maybe 120 Baht. Need to signal better the floor as not clear the route to follow once inside the museum.
Manuel C — Google review
This one fantastic museum and pretty much a 'must-do' if you have an extended amount time to enjoy the wonders of Khon Kaen province in Isan, Northeastern Thailand. Plenty of art, photography, storyboards (static and interactive) and sculptures. It housed in classic European styled building on the outskirts of the city centre, with lush gardens and plenty of parking, Inside, it set across two (2) levels and has a welcoming, roomy feel. Definitely one for history buffs and culture hounds (see my YouTube), like yours truly.
Coffee T — Google review
We were the first people there, so we got to enjoy it uninterrupted. The history that you get to see and read is interesting, actually so I suggest you visit for a little lesson of the old culture and life in Northern Thailand.
Kim D — Google review
A great small museum. Informative on history of Thailand's northeastern region. Rich cultural and religious blend of Thai Laos and Cambodia. People arrived from Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam over the years to be part of Isan community.
Visan ( — Google review
One of few attractions in Khon Kaen. The museum is small, exibition is nice but also not big. I spend around 45 minutes to walk around and read everything. Price I would say high for is offered. 200 baht for foreginers, 20 baht for Thai.
Travel B — Google review
National museum of Khon Kean city. A brief history from early history period until now. Overall brief details of Esaan ( North eastern) cultures. If you are historical nerd 🤓 like me shall enjoy. Fee is cheap for Thais 20 THB. Foreigner 100 THB.

An excellent museum with lots of interesting exhibits from the Dvaravati period. Can get busy when school visits are taking place.

Pagoda
Buddhist temple
Pilgrimage place
Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, also known as Wat Nong Wang, is a stunning pagoda-style Buddhist temple located in Khon Kaen, Thailand. This impressive structure features 9 receding levels culminating in a soaring golden spire. Situated just 10 minutes from the local bus station, the temple is renowned for its association with the city's dinosaur fossils.
Calm & inviting , Life stories/ lessons in art and carved reliefs on every floor. 162 steps to arrive at # 9 level // fresh air, nice breeze , birdseye view of Bueng Kaen Nakorn & beyond to most of Khon Kaen City.
Greg A — Google review
I was not able to go to the top due to the maintenance work. The temple is beautiful and palm trees around it and it shows the history and culture of Khon Kaen. As a tamil I can see a lot of cultural similarities Saiva Tamils and ancient Khon Kaen people.
Live M — Google review
Normally, you can got to the top (8th floor) and have a view over city and nature. But due to construction, at the moment you can only access the lower four floors. The view is still nice and the building itself is also worth a visit (beautiful carvings ind doors and windows as well as animal mosaics). If it is wet, be careful on the tiled floor, it might be slippery.
Viki S — Google review
Beautiful, well kept temple with a lot of activities inside. Also a nice place to buy souvenirs related to local religion. Definitely go upstairs to the 4th floor. You have 360° view over the city.
Yannick P — Google review
Strange mix of religions going on here. Not very Bhuddist at all but interesting. The main goal here is giving away as much of your money as you can to bring you luck and wealth.....yes, I know, its silly but entertaining. Sadly only the first 3 levels of the temple were open due to renovations, so we didnt get the views of Knon Kean.
Gerry H — Google review
Amazing temple once again. This is very big compared to many others and the roof is build in 9 layers which makes the building pretty unique. Extremely beautiful murals inside the temple and many golden statues in all sizes. A top 10 temple in Thailand for me personally

Most beautiful temple in Khon Kaen my 1st visit will not be last since will be moving here from Chiang Mai in September. There is some work going on currently so was unable to go higher than 4th floor but still fantastic views.

Bueng Kaen Nakhon Reservoir, located in Khon Kaen, is a serene and picturesque area that offers a perfect escape from the city's hustle and bustle. The lake is surrounded by lush trees and temples, making it an ideal spot for leisurely walks or invigorating runs at sunset. It takes about half an hour to walk around the entire lake, but visitors often take longer to explore the nearby shrines, temples, and the Hall of Culture and Heritage.
It’s good to go for a walk and enjoy the view and weather
Giggy W — Google review
It is possible to run or walk all around this lake. Many people enjoy their time here … when the night coming the market opens his doors. I found out really interesting all the group of people who dancing or have aerobics session. Lovely place even if the main road is not far…
Eva P — Google review
My favourite thing to do each morning when I am in Khon Kaen is to work out for 2 hours at Way Fitness then walk around the lake. There are so many amazing flowers and interesting things to see around the lake. Stop in at KFC and fill up your water bottle with ice before walking.
Adam R — Google review
5 November 2022 A pleasant relief from the hot clustered business area. Approximately a bit over 3 kilometre circumvention around the reservoir, depending on the pathway taken. Generally there are three paths circumventing the reservoir; newer rim path with wheelchair access ramps from what appears to be the centre older path and the outer path for cycling. Lots of shady trees, particularly on the centre pathway. Enjoy the cool breezes coming off the reservoir as nature's own airconditioning. Public gym equipment at various places around the lake; and, a few children's play areas. Decrepit old toilets (near the bike hire) on the western side of the reservoir with much better toilets on the eastern side with good wheelchair access and at the north eastern end of the reservoir.

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Wat Thung Setthi is a popular attraction in Khon Kaen, known for its distinctive gold and blue exterior, unlike the typical gold and red colors of other temples. The temple features beautiful white statues scattered throughout the premises. Located near Route 230, this relatively new Thai Buddhist temple translates to 'Temple Millionaires Field,' hinting that making merit here will bring prosperity.
It is a very beautiful temple with a spacious area. We visited during the day when it was quite sunny, and there were no tourists, allowing us to take stunning photos. Admission is free. Highly recommended for capturing beautiful pictures! However, the temple is quite far from the city. We took a Grab ride, which took quite a while, but it was definitely worth it.
Arthur ( — Google review
I recently had the chance to visit a temple that turned out to be one of the most peaceful and calming places I’ve been to in a while. The entire atmosphere was so serene, surrounded by lush greenery and open space—it really felt like a peaceful escape from the city. At first, the entrance was a little confusing; it felt like I might have taken a wrong turn because the road leading in wasn’t clearly marked. But once I arrived, I was amazed at how beautiful and well-maintained the temple grounds were. There’s a parking area available, which is really helpful, especially if you’re driving. I visited around midday, and I have to say—it was extremely hot. But even with the heat, the experience was enjoyable because the temple has a lot of trees and shaded areas that help cool things down a bit. They also provide free umbrellas for visitors, which was such a thoughtful touch. I’d still recommend bringing your own if you can, just in case all the shared ones are being used. The temple architecture is stunning. As I walked around the grounds, I couldn’t help but stop to admire all the different statues, shrines, and details in the structures. Each piece of art and sculpture felt meaningful and beautifully designed. There was so much attention to detail, and I found myself spending quite a bit of time just quietly observing everything. It was like being in an outdoor art gallery—but filled with spiritual energy and tradition. One nice surprise was a donation point where you could contribute toward free ice cream for visitors. That small gesture made a big impact, especially on such a hot day! I also appreciated the friendly staff and volunteers helping out with the traditional offerings, like candles and bells. One of them told us we didn’t have to remove our shoes on the hot pavement since the sun had made the ground almost too hot to walk on—but of course, we removed them before entering the sacred area upstairs to show respect. Once I climbed the stairs to the upper level of the temple, the breeze made everything feel cooler. The wind blowing through that high spot made it a perfect place to sit for a moment, take a deep breath, and really enjoy the view and peaceful surroundings. Despite the midday heat, the whole experience felt worthwhile and refreshing for the spirit. Visiting this temple was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. It’s not just about seeing a beautiful place, but also about feeling calm, connected, and inspired. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a meaningful stop on their journey.
Little F — Google review
Some parts of this wat remind me of a church, maybe it is because of the big cupola.... And yet on top of the cupola, there is this "shade/umbrella" of the Buddhist temple. For me it is a nice "baroque" design.

Beautiful temple with a unique style, well worth a visit. Large temple with grounds to explore really nice
Paul J — Google review
Beautiful for sure. But not really worth the trip. It's very little to see.
Joakim H — Google review
I came here on a bit of a last minute whim when Mama wanted to stop by to pray for a bit. Why not. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the main temple sitting in what appears as the middle of a small lake is impressive. I really don't have much to tell with respect to the cultural meaning of the place as everything is in Thai only however luckily there are a number of Thai reviews here that give you a bit of background. From my perspective many of the statues were very unusual depicting strange little creatures somewhere between human and NOT, seemingly guarding the shrines on the 4 corners of the main temple. My wife new little about the temple but mentioned that these are children caught between living in the real world and spirit world. In general it is a great place for some photos and the awesome beauty of the entire grounds make for a nice place to check out.

Shopping
Khon Kaen walking street is a vibrant market that offers a more relaxed and authentic Thai-style shopping experience compared to other touristy markets. The festive atmosphere is enhanced by Chinese lanterns adorning the entire market, where local sellers offer handmade items like photo frames, t-shirts, handbags, and postcards. The market features separate zones for consumer products and seasonal food, with fair prices and a diverse range of goods.
Shop till you drop, 'Saturday night (market) fever' is here. Heaps and oodles more, food, glorious food!. You will be tempted by tasty local Thai treats, as well as farang style cuisine, dine-in or takeaway, as you please. If you are in Khon Kaen City on a Saturday night, then may I suggest that this is a fantastic spot for you to explore. Bring your walking shoes and enjoy the vibe ...

The famous street market of Khonkaen prefecture. All of shop are local, basic and naturally. The zoning is separate by consumers product and food products, you can find the seasonal food in this street food. The price is very fair. Good vibes. If you are the traveller, I recommended to come.

Kk walking street now having event from 1-12 Dec. Admission and parking is free. Highly recommended for evening walk, as there's many streetfood and go for photos as night there's light as well.

Maybe the Covid scare & restrictions have made this Saturday night event dismal and not special. No place to sit and eat your food from the vendors and lacks a happy atmosphere. Maybe a live band would help.

A lot of booths or stores in this walking street. You also can buy puppies here. For Muslim, you can find halal food store that selling yellow rice and chicken. Don't worry about car park because a lot of space around there.

Pomodoro is a popular Italian restaurant in Khon Kaen, known for its authentic cuisine and warm service. It offers a variety of dishes including pizza, pasta, salad, and tiramisu. The restaurant has received positive reviews for its great taste and value for money. Located near Pullman hotel, it is a favorite spot for those craving Italian food in the area. With friendly staff and a nice wine selection, Pomodoro promises a delightful dining experience in Khon Kaen.
Excellent menu options. Food is as excellent and good size portions. The ladies offer superb and attentive service. Highly recommended for Italian pasta and pizza.
Tim S — Google review
The staff and the atmosphere are good, but the food is terrible. The pizza doesn’t seem fresh-cooked; it’s not hot; it’s salty, dry, and dull. Pizza in a random buffet is better than their pizza. The lasagna is like a mushy stew. If you don’t tell me it’s a lasagna, I would have thought it’s mash potatoes. A good lasagna should be savory, slightly tangy from the tomatoes, rich from the cheese. The layers of pizza in a lasagna should be soft, chewy, and cheesy.
Muhara T — Google review
I’m not here for pizza. My favorite dishes would be Italian Sausages and Milanesa. Favorite dessert is Amaretto cream.

Update 5 October 2024: this place is still AWESOME. Just had the phenomenal #116: fettuccine salmone. Great vibe, great food and great service from Joy. Update 4 August 2024: still the best food in Khon Kaen and a great 'Joy' to eat here. 😊 I have come here consistently over the past 10-15 years because it serves the best Italian food in Kohn Kaen, actually best in Issan. Maybe the best in Thailand, perhaps the best in Asia. No kidding, you read me correctly. The best Italian food in Asia.

Not quite sure how this place has ranked quite as high as it has. I would regard the food as average. I had the lasagna and the spinach ravioli along with a side of garlic bread. The garlic was powerful and the sauce was a very sweet sauce. If you prefer sweet sauce, then you will probably like this place. Service was stellar though. Very fast and very friendly. Prices were reasonable for this type of food in this part of the country.

An old place that is famous in Khonkaen. Next generation tried to start it again but nope nope nope. What a let down. This have a lot of potential but crashing down on all aspect of restaurant starting from the service. They are short staffed (or their staff is just lazy I don't know) but from the start we had to walk in to theur huge space with empty table and chairs to their deepest dining zone. Even when there's staffing booth before the zone no one come to greeted us. I have to walk to them to get their attention. They saw us from the front but I don't know why they don't walk to us to show us their available zone. After I told them I reserved some table already they seemed surprised and walked us to the table. Guess what, the table that they put it together to accommodate us but another party already sat down in them. What the heck is going on about reservation. Am I mistaken about the dedinition or what? Anyway the staff seemed upset that she had to make new connecting table. Anyway, their seats are old and uncomfortable. The food is okay and some of them tasted good but mostly just normal Chinese cuisine. A lot of potential. Could be the new landmark if they really renovate all of them and have good system amd staffing. They haven't even repainted the old restaurant sign

I hadn't realised that the restaurant was actually inside the Avani hotel until a member of staff informed me of the fact. It is a really beautiful restaurant with high vaulted ceilings and a chilled atmosphere. There were no other diners there when we arrived and about 3 staff members, which included the chef. The menu we were given didn't have a great deal of choice but there were a few that I was willing to try. I ordered the chicken with mango salad with criss cross fries (waffle fries). 5 minutes later I was told that there was no chicken. This was just after noon on a Thursday. We both ordered the fried rice, one pork the other prawn and some chicken thighs. I did not enjoy my pork fried rice as it tasted very mushy (soft), as did the prawn fried rice. The staff that were there were friendly and very helpful.

Thipwimon is a popular Chinese restaurant known for its freshly made Dim Sums and amazing Peking duck. It is a favorite spot for large gatherings and families of Chinese descent. The restaurant offers a good selection of dim sum, some buffet-style and some prepared to order, making it suitable for various preferences. A dim sum place in Avani hotel. I went there for the dim sum buffet at dinner service and you could tell that it is understaffed and that they even need to call for more help from the other section of the hotel. A guy from London inn had to come in to help serving, haha. The place is well decorated but for the normal table and chair it would be more preferable if they seitched out the usual chair into a more heavy wooden chair. It would be more luxurious. The table scratches is also noticable by glance. The food is fast and hot. However, some is delicious that you should try like ha-kao and some you could skip it because it isn't any better than any other places like their fried rice and rard nar. The booze chicken isn't soft like it should. Their dim sum and fried things is excellent. Piping hot amd delicious. You have to try it when they just serve. Their mian bao is okay but the bread texture could be improve. It just felt a bit cheap to be hotel food in Chinese specialty section. Also the portion of the food is changing for some food. Like the fried spring roll. At first we got 5 pieces but the second time we got 4. The sizer and arrangement is different too so yeah....overall it is a decent place and the service is good if you don't mind all the little things I listed above. Their buffet time wasn't limited too so that's one of the good things. oh right their kana so bitter when I went there.

I highly recommend Ju Fang Restaurant at Avani Khon Kaen. The cuisine was exquisite, prepared with remarkable skill and finesse, and the service was exceptionally warm and attentive. Every member of the staff displayed genuine kindness, with Auy in particular standing out for her graciousness and charm. We had the dim sum buffet and it was amazing. Although there are limited options, everything tasted so fresh and well-seasoned. The staff are very accommodating and friendly. It takes quite some time for the food to be served so order a lot at once because it’s made fresh as you order. The atmosphere is great, overlooking the street.

The food is delicious, but when it came time to pay the bill, I specifically instructed the waitress to use THB instead of USD for the credit card transaction. When I got the bill to sign, it was charged in USD hence I got an unfavorable exchange rate and an additional 3 percent charge (I basically paid 300 baht more). My friend asked the cashier about this but they said their system cannot process foreign credit cards in thai currency which seems ridiculous to me especially at a nice hotel. I've actually never experienced this issue in my life in Thailand or the many countries I've traveled to.

If you're looking for a vibrant culinary experience in Khon Kaen, the Khon Kaen Night Market is an absolute must-visit. Nestled conveniently near the city center, this lively market transforms a section of Ruen Rom Road into a food lover's paradise. Here, you'll find an array of street vendors offering delicious Isaan specialties like sai grok (fermented sausage), fried chicken with sticky rice, and mouthwatering pork satay.
