Oarai-machi

Ōarai is a coastal city in Japan’s Kantō region. It’s home to broad, sandy Ōarai Sun Beach. Aqua World has hundreds of marine species including sharks and penguins. Interactive exhibits at Wakuwaku Science Museum have an ocean theme. The observation deck of Oarai Marine Tower offers panoramic views. A huge torii gate marks the entrance to Isosaki-jinja Shrine and another torii sits atop wave-splashed ocean rocks.

Oarai Isosaki Shrine is a revered 9th-century shrine located on the coastline of Ibaraki Prefecture, facing the Pacific Ocean. It features the Kamiiso-no-Torii gate at the shore, where waves crash against its base. According to history, it is believed that two deities descended onto this land in 856.
Peaceful and beautiful, this shrine is one of my favorites I visited. The stairs might be a little much for some, but I enjoyed the hike! The view towards the ocean is breathtaking and the shrine itself is gorgeous. Would recommend for anyone visiting Oarai!
Im G — Google review
beautiful and peaceful, but be ready—the stairs really do take your breath away! Totally worth the climb for the view. A great spot for a quick visit and some memorable photos.
Chayoot V — Google review
It is a peaceful place, there was not much crowd or tourist. Maybe it's because I went around 4pm. The charm shop is close at 4:30pm if I'm not mistaken. You are advised to go there early.
Ong N — Google review
This sacred place marks where the two main gods descended at Kamiiso Tori. After crossing the street, you will be welcomed by large stairs leading to the shrine gate.
Nguyenthianhlinh — Google review
I visited by bike. The stairs leading to the main shrine are a bit steep, but once you turn around, you’re greeted with a breathtaking view of the sea. There were also quite a few foreign visitors."
World H — Google review
Short time going to the shrine but i didnt go up hill so just have a look torii on the coast. Very nice!

Another serene shrine that is a must visit, not crowded like other shrines. A lot of Instagram-worthy spots to get your fix, like the giant Torii gate that overlooks the sea. Very calming and serene place

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Aqua World Ibaraki Oarai Aquarium is a lesser-known seaside destination that can be easily visited on a day trip from Japan. The aquarium offers a wide range of marine life, hands-on exhibits, and dolphin shows. It is conveniently located next to Oarai Beach, a pebbled sand strip stretching from the aquarium building to Oarai Port. The beach features rock formations just offshore and offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.
Another must-visit aquarium in Japan. It's helpful if you understand a little Japanese so that you can enjoy the joke during the seal and dolphins show. Check out their website and go there early to enjoy activities and nice shows. Tips: 1) There is a cafeteria at the exit which is much better than the restaurant in the aquarium. 2) you can re-entry within 30 mins after exit
Payia S — Google review
Pretty awesome place to visit if you are in the area. This places provides lots of exhibits and there are so many animals that you can get up and close with. Dont miss the dolphine show and penguin feeding times! You can spend about 2.5 hrs here comfortably.
Chang T — Google review
Great place for family and kids. The aquarium has a nice design. If you go there you have to see the dolphin show. The aquarium also has a view to the seashore which I like best. It is also located near the Oarai Jinja.
Ngoc T — Google review
We went there around 3pm on Sunday and we enjoyed till the close. It was fun. Not too big, not too small, not too fancy, just a classic aquarium, loved it.
K N — Google review
What a wonderful aquarium! My wife, my sister, and I went on a Monday about 2ish hours before closing and we were still able to catch a show before the aquarium closed for the day. We missed the tank petting time though but mostly because we didn't realize there was one. It's nestled between the upper floors near the children play area. We saw you could pet small sharks along with the normal sea life they offer. The aquarium is split between multiple floors and a sizeable outside portion with seals and penguins. Inside there's massive tanks with sharks, sunfish, and large salt-water sealife. The sharks are what I primarily looking forward to and it did not disappoint. They had some jellyfish but the tanks for them were lackluster. They had a few large crabs and other tidepool sealife available but the main attraction is the bigger fish and sharks. They also had a baby shark area that shows you how they take care of them. The show itself was very entertaining. The seal was incredibly smart and intuitive and a joy to watch. The dolphins and their trainers were phenomenal as well. I would say alott 2-3 hours for really seeing and learning about what's offered here. Maybe more if you're going to do all of the shows and petting part. Free parking and an expansion giftshop as well.

I’ve been to over 6 different aquariums with my (now 9 yr old son) and this tops the list. He’s really into sharks and they have a variety of different species to see.
Gallivanter — Google review
Great to see some sea animals and we were able to watch the dolphin and seal show. You can spend at least 2-3 hours getting through everything. Love the souvenir options after the theatre show and exit. There’s also some food area near the souvenir shop. Great for kids to enjoy!

Haven't been back here since our 2 daughters were ages 12 and 6. Now our oldest daughter has made us a very proud grandparents to an adorable granddaughter, age 1 yr.and 2 months old. She is 1/4 American, and 3/4 Japanese. Her playroom group from Horikawa preschool/ kindergarten invited all the grandparents to attend, which I gladly accepted. So glad to see our granddaughter enjoy herself running here and there keeping her mommy busy, cause just isn't that fast anymore. Our 1st daughter enjoyed this wonderful place once again as in the past with her mom (me ). We plan on visiting again in near future , so Aqua World be waiting for us 🥰🥰‼️Sincerely Amy Yano and family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧👨‍👩‍👧👫🇺🇸🇯🇵🗻🗾🌏

Outdoor Activities
Oarai Sun Beach, located in Ibaraki prefecture, is a hidden gem for travelers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. This eastward-facing beach offers ample space for surfing, sunbathing, and swimming. It is a family-friendly destination with shallow waters that are safe for sea swimming. The beach also provides services for people with disabilities and elderly visitors, including accessible wheelchairs for both the beach and water.
My first proper beach experience in Japan. If you want to see a proper beach with sand and sea shore this is your place.
Kaushik K — Google review
Nice beach to unwind. May get crowded during peak season. But due to corona, all parking is closed thus few people is present. Lots of live clams to dig and other sea creatures. Seagulls tend ti steal food on unattended belongings.
Maku B — Google review
Great beach, nice sand, small waves, but be aware, the parking lots are very far from the sand and water’s edge. Its quite a walk with all your beach gear. I saw many people using collapsable wagons to get from their car to the beachfront.
Marites S — Google review
Oarai Sun Beach is a beautiful, family-friendly beach with soft sand and shallow water—perfect for kids and beginners. It’s Japan’s first barrier-free beach, so wheelchair access and showers are very convenient. Lots of space for swimming, beach volleyball, and clam digging. Parking is huge, though it can get busy in summer. Close to Ōarai Aquarium and the seaside shrine, so it’s easy to make a full day out of it.
S V — Google review
Huge, long beach that can hold thousands of people appropriately. The fireworks show on September is amazing, with large size and very organized crowds. However, the public transportation to here is not that convenient, so you better drive here.
Michael J — Google review
Near to beach, people are coming for the waves. The campsite is next to a heavy traffic road, if u select the most convenient sites, trucks just run throughout the night above your camp. Toilets are clean with hot water supply

Nice and spacious beach with good waves. Easy access from Oarai station. Toilets and showers are near by so is a big shopping mall 😊

Mentai Park Oarai is a popular attraction that offers an immersive experience centered around mentaiko, also known as pollock roe. Visitors can enjoy factory tours, a shop with various mentaiko products, and a gallery showcasing this seafood delicacy. The park also features dining options where guests can taste and learn about the versatile use of mentaiko in dishes like rice balls and pasta.
If you’re a mentaiko fan like I am, this place is absolute paradise. Mentai Park Oarai has all kinds of creative products—mentaiko ice cream, steamed buns, and other unique treats you wouldn’t expect to have mentaiko in, but they somehow make it work! They also sell cooler bags for around 700 yen (if I remember right), which is super handy if you’re not heading home right away. No need to worry about keeping things fresh. Plus, there’s plenty of parking, making it an easy and convenient stop.
Chayoot V — Google review
I visited by bike. It was a holiday, so there were a lot of people, especially families. You can tour the mentaiko (spicy cod roe) factory, and there’s also a food court where you can grab a bite to eat.
World H — Google review
They have various mentaiko-related activities, which I found pretty novel and surprisingly enjoyable 😂 For example: mentaiko sampling, mentaiko origami, mentaiko-themed cafeteria, mentaiko chips/rusk catching, getting to view their factory, and of course the mentaiko shop! Special shout out to the mentaiko ice cream, which was superrr milky! And the mentaiko bits added bursts of spiciness to the experience, and it didn’t taste odd at all haha
Lynn — Google review
Literally a factory and wholesale of fish eggs contained in a bladder-like substance. Japanese usually mix it with mayo. But nothing interesting for foreigners if you ask me. The staff was nice and inviting.

Sells different types of mentai and there’s a small area where you can see the factory. Takes little time to finish the park.

Japanese inn

Sakanaya Honten is a cozy inn with modestly decorated rooms, featuring a restaurant and communal bathhouse. The inn is known for its excellent food, attentive service, and comfortable accommodations. Situated in the heart of a Girls und Panzer pilgrimage site, it offers an ideal location for enthusiasts of the popular attraction. Guests have praised the affordable rates, cleanliness, spacious rooms, and friendly staff. Additionally, the inn's collection of charming Darjeeling goods has left many visitors impressed.
This ryokan is amazing. From the moment I arrived, the staff was very nice, understanding, and accommodating. Although they didn't speak much English, important information could still be understood. Service was amazing. The food was incredible and unlike anything I have ever eaten before. Expect to be well fed! The rooms and accommodations were amazing. (Translated by Google) As you'd expect from a traditional Japanese inn, both dinner and breakfast were really delicious. Especially the seafood! Huge palm-sized clams, grilled dried mexicali fish! The sashimi was also fresh! Also, each of the other dishes (seared bonito, steamed Hitachi beef, rice pot, homemade dessert) were very delicious. Breakfast included freshly made tofu, Mito kume natto, bamboo fish cake, and dried horse mackerel. The rice went down very well. The bath was available for private use, so it was very relaxing. I stayed here on a business trip, but next time I'd like to visit on a family trip. Thank you so much for your hospitality! I was searching for a ryokan (Japanese inn) within a 100km, two-hour drive from my home where I could enjoy delicious fish. ♪ The day before, a typhoon had made landfall in Kyushu and the Chugoku-Shikoku region, moving from the Kinki and Tokai regions toward the Kanto region. Fortunately, it passed quickly. Thanks to this, the air was clean and fresh after the typhoon had passed. I was looking forward to my first visit to Sakanaya Honten, a traditional Japanese inn. Although I arrived a little later than planned, I safely checked in and immediately went to the bath. I washed off in the cozy family bath and relaxed in my room for a while, looking forward to dinner. At 6:30, I had dinner in a private room. The owner prepared freshly caught appetizers. The freshly prepared fish was delicious, including abalone steak. Thank you for everything. The breakfast was delicious. It was a beautiful Japanese meal, just like the one in the photo. Chushin is an informal restaurant known for its market-fresh seafood specialties, including sushi and tempura. The dishes are meticulously prepared, with a focus on freshness and quality. One must-try dish is the crab gratin made without any additives, featuring delicious crab meat. The monkfish hotpot, a specialty of Ibaraki, is also highly recommended for its rich and fragrant miso-based soup and tender monkfish meat.
Fantastic meal, very reasonably priced for the set sashimi meal and everything it came with. Great place to stop in for dinner on the way to the ferry, right near the nearest bus stop. Would love to return.

(Translated by Google) Speaking of Oarai, it's monkfish hotpot, so I came here for that purpose. There was a fresh fish store on the side facing the road, and our meal was at the back. The parking lot was a few dozen meters away, but it was hard to tell at a glance that it belonged to this shop, so be careful if it's your first time. When I went, there were several groups in line, but there were more seats than it looked, and the rotation wasn't as bad as I had expected. Of course I ordered the monkfish hotpot. When it arrived, there was quite a lot of meat, and each part had a different taste and texture, but it was very delicious. It's not something I usually eat, so I was very satisfied! It was also nice that they would make rice porridge for an additional fee. *There were two of us when we went, so the monkfish hot pot in the photo is the amount for two people.

Although it may be called an izakaya, it has a stately appearance like a traditional Japanese restaurant. Customers who smell of perfume are only allowed in the private rooms, so social considerations are thorough. This time, we were seated at the counter. The deep, impressive counter made from a single piece of wood gives it a sense of luxury and exclusivity. The seafood, including sashimi, sushi, and seafood dishes, is fresh and great value for money, as you would expect from a fish shop. (Translated by Google) Uochu is a great place to buy fresh fish in Oarai. You can also enjoy dishes made with that fresh seafood at the attached Tadashin. I visited because I had a particular goal in mind: waterless monkfish hotpot: dobujiru. While many monkfish hotpots calling themselves dobujiru use miso balls, this is a rich hotpot made with a carefully kneaded base of monkfish liver, simmered in the water from the monkfish and vegetables. I really wanted to try this, so I made a reservation. Tadashin's hotpot, with its generous amount of monkfish liver, was incredibly rich. It was a blessing, and it really made my winter visit to Ibaraki truly meaningful. With Aoyagi-san closing, dobujiru has become even rarer. It's a shame. With a wide variety of seafood options besides monkfish hotpot, including sushi chefs making sushi right in front of you, it's a place worth making the trip all the way to Oarai. Seafood restaurant
Sushi Yukyu is a highly regarded restaurant known for its exceptional sashimi, surpassing the standards found in London. The demand for this establishment is evident as it often has long queues during peak hours. It would be ideal to combine a visit to the nearby aquarium with a trip to Sushi Yukyu if the wait time is excessive. The maguro served here is incredibly delicious, and the flavors of chutoro, ootoro, and negitoro are particularly enjoyable.

The flavour was wonderful, and I especially enjoyed the chutoro and ootoro and negitoro 🥰🥰🥰 The chef was really friendly and kind too - when my friend choked on the wasabi and started coughing, he offered to give us water 🥰 We joined the queue at 12pm on a Thursday, and there were 10 people in front of us. It took us 30 minutes to enter the store, but it was worth it!

This place is famous in Japan for Tekkadon, which is a bowl of rice topped with tuna. The wikipedia article for Donburi includes a picture taken a this restaurant for Tekkadon. I got the bowl that included other fish. The best part of course was the tuna which was insanely fresh and delicious. The shrimp was the second most delicious (although I was scared of eating the head). However, I wish I got the Tekkadon because the tuna was just so amazing and delicious.

(Translated by Google) I ate so much monkfish that I didn't have to eat it forever. It was a fresh and rich dish that had just been prepared the night before. The chef was always at the table explaining the food and explaining the food, and I was often impressed by the various things. (Translated by Google) The best soup in Oarai. Served at the seafood dining area in the hotel. During the period, Dobujiru will be available only every day. The reason it's called dobujiru instead of monkfish hotpot is because it doesn't use any water at all. This is because it is made with only the water from the monkfish and vegetables, and one chef per seat cooks and serves the dishes. I always make reservations and go for lunch. The period is from November to March, and we always make reservations for 4 people. It's richer and richer than monkfish hotpot, and once you eat it, you'll want to eat it again. It's a little pricey, but I recommend it. Finally, we finished the meal with rice. You'll be able to eat it again this year.
