Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Salzburg Cathedral, with its twin spires and baroque-style architecture, is a monumental symbol of the city's religious significance and historical wealth. The cathedral houses a museum that displays sacred treasures, adding to its allure. The building has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries, with the current structure showcasing early Baroque ecclesiastical architecture at its finest. Visitors are captivated by the towering facade and turquoise domes of this 17th-century marvel.
The inside of this cathedral is absolutely stunning. The walls and ceilings are bathed in rich and intricate detail and the ceiling has eye catching murals and statues. It truly is something to see and worth a bit of your time in Salzburg. It doesn’t take long to just pop in and admire. I would encourage visitors to wear appropriate clothing and act appropriately considering this is a church.
Benjamin M — Google review
Beautiful cathedral!! Entrance fee is a modest 5 Euros. Once inside be sure to check out the underground in the far back left (facing the altar). Also there’s a giant metal structure where Mozart was baptized as a child (see in my photos)
Colton W — Google review
Beautiful large cathedral with high ceiling and open space. We got lucky as a small group of musicians were performing which allowed the music to echo throughout the cathedral which made for a peaceful ambiance. I would highly recommend visiting this place.
Anand — Google review
Just amazing! The Cathedral has a unique architecture and we also booked ourselves for an organ concert. Every day at noonafter the 12 o'clock bells there is an organ concert. It's preferable you book your place. The player changed the organs and during half hour he played different pieces to three different organs. A must do activity in Salzburg.
Maria G — Google review
Nice cathedral and need 5 euro entrance ticket. We were here on the first day of Rupertikirtag festival, so the stalls and other activities are just starting to kick off the festivities. From here we walk to the Festung Hohensalzburg gate to buy the cable car ticket.

The Salzburg Cathedral is a breathtaking Baroque masterpiece in the heart of the Old Town. Its grand façade, elegant dome, and beautifully decorated interior create a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere. The cathedral’s historic organ, once played by Mozart, and its stunning frescoes make it a true cultural gem. Surrounded by the charming Domplatz and views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress, it’s a must-see landmark that perfectly captures Salzburg’s beauty and history.

Totally worth the time to collect oneself inside out of the cold for a few private moments in prayer. An amazing dome and frescos are amazing showing of the Passion of Christ. - Jesus, show me the path of life!
Douglas B — Google review
An absolutely beautiful church! This stands out from many of the other churches we’d seen because of the stunning black and white design that makes the paintings pop. The organ was also beautiful. There is an entrance fee but the discount with the Salzburg card brings it down to €3.5 per person.

Castle
Nature & Parks
Mirabell Palace, a 17th-century architectural gem located in Salzburg, is renowned for its ornamental gardens and opulent interior. The palace was featured in the iconic film 'The Sound of Music,' with its gardens serving as the backdrop for memorable scenes. Built by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich in 1606 and later redesigned in Baroque style, the palace boasts exquisite interior decorations including stucco and wall paintings.
Mirabell Palace is absolutely stunning and a must-see in Salzburg. The palace itself is elegant, but the real highlight is the Mirabell Gardens — beautifully maintained with colorful flower beds, sculptures, and fountains that make it feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale. The view looking through the gardens towards the fortress is breathtaking and perfect for photos. It’s free to enter the gardens, and they’re easy to walk through, so it’s a great stop even if you’re short on time. If you visit in spring or summer, the flowers are in full bloom and the atmosphere is magical. Music lovers will also appreciate that some of the “Sound of Music” scenes were filmed here. Highly recommend visiting in the morning before the crowds arrive — it’s peaceful, romantic, and unforgettable.
Andrew H — Google review
The gardens are magnificent. Symmetry and colors are combined in beautiful compositions. Access to the gardens is free. The palace itself is also free, but there is nothing to see. Access is only to the staircase, which is magnificent, but it is disappointing that there is no access to the halls. We only managed to peek into one.
Sonya M — Google review
It's a really beautiful and popular place in Salzburg that everyone have to see. The gardens are stunning and you can enjoy sitting around and taking photos. There are also classical music concerts there, which are definitely a must-see if you love this genre!
Gergana T — Google review
Even in late October, without all the flowers, the gardens are well kept and beautiful. I’m a huge fan of the dwarf garden! Very fun, though not PC (bc history is not PC) statues in there! Worth a walk through and FREE. The only part of the palace that was accessible was the marble staircase area—I believe it had a real name. Pretty, but the gardens are better!
Olivia H — Google review
Beautiful palace with stunning gardens. Easy to walk around and free to enter. The views with the flowers, statues, and Salzburg backdrop are picture-perfect. Peaceful spot to relax, take photos, or just enjoy the scenery. Great for a short, calming visit.
Cyw — Google review
Nice walk around the gardens with the memorable views of the Sound of Music. There were three weddings going on at the same time. Seems the palace was closed for visitors today. Loaded with tourists parties there for the same reason as us no doubt.
Steve B — Google review
Huge garden with fountain, it's a pity we visited there in winter, I didn't see the red flowers 💐chill vibe, people walk around enjoying quiet moments
Chengyi — Google review
Even though it was rainy a lot, the sculptures at the outskirts of the palace and the gardens inside were pretty. The cobblestone ground was a bit swampy and uncomfortable to walk, but anyway I bet it'd be fascinating to revisit there on sunny days.

Fortress
Museums
Perched on a hilltop with commanding views of the city and the Alps, Fortress Hohensalzburg is an impressive 11th-century complex that draws in over 1.4 million visitors annually. To avoid the crowds, it's best to arrive early and take a glass funicular or embark on a steep 20-minute walk up Festungsgasse in the Old Town to reach this iconic landmark.
Great view but you need to pay extra to go to the tower (which we didn’t). Still absolutely worth visiting while you’re in Salzburg. You can skip the line if you buy or get tickets upfront (we got them from our hotel).
Stevo T — Google review
Very nice fortress overlooking the city of Salzburg. You get some magnificent view from up there. You also have the opportunity to got to the top of the fortress and get a full 360 degree view of the region. They have some nice museums and displays inside the fortress. Definitely worth it to spend some good amount of time. Even if you are here for short time, it would recommend 1.5hr just to walk through the entire area.
Anand — Google review
Bought the entrance and funicular train ticket and it's a enjoyable trip up the hill to the castle. Plenty of stuff to see in the fortress and also great view of Salzburg city from the top of the castle. Really beautiful scenery and we don't want to leave but had to rush to find the train station as we need to catch the 12pm Hallstatt tour.
Ai C — Google review
We visited the Fortress Hohensalzburg and had a memorable experience. We didn’t know about the funicular to go up, so we walked all the way — a great cardio workout and a nice way to enjoy the surroundings. 🏰 The fortress itself is beautiful and very well preserved, offering a fascinating glimpse into Salzburg’s history. The museum inside is truly impressive, with excellent exhibits that make the visit even more enriching. 🌄 The highlight, however, is the breathtaking view from the top. Looking out over Salzburg and the surrounding mountains is simply unforgettable. ✅ Overall, Fortress Hohensalzburg is a must-see attraction in Salzburg. Whether you take the funicular or walk up, the combination of history, architecture, and stunning scenery makes it well worth the visit.
Fabiano D — Google review
Truly beautiful, must see spot in Salzburg. Definitely recommend the panaromic view from the fortress tower. We unfortunately hadn’t visited neither the museum nor the armory, but we enjoyed it anyway. We really appreciated the stand where we could get for ourselves some Glühwein and simply enjoy the beautiful night view.
Ján K — Google review
We thought there would be more spaces that were open for tours, but the tour was still good. The restaurant in the fortress was great! Service was great as well as the food and we enjoyed as much as we could eat as the portion sizes were large.
Amy T — Google review
This is a fascinating site. There are many things to see in this historic place. Be prepared for some step climbing to get the very best views. We enjoyed learning all the history about the Fortress. There are rooms full of interesting items dating from ancient times to modern life.
Linda B — Google review
Amazing castle and exhibition. Everything is modern, interactive and multisensory. Truly a nice example of the basic of how exhibitions today should look like. Plus the ticket's price is also very okay. 100% recommend buying tickets in advance though, there was a super long queue when buying on the spot.

History Museums
Mozart's Birthplace, also known as Mozarts Geburtshaus, is a significant historical site in Salzburg. The yellow townhouse was where Wolfgang Mozart, one of the most influential composers in history, was born and lived for 17 years. Today, it operates as a house museum offering tours that provide insights into Mozart's early life. Visitors can explore three floors filled with personal belongings, musical instruments, family portraits, and other important items related to Mozart.
Mozart’s Birthplace Museum is a must-visit in the heart of Salzburg. With the Salzburg Card, entry is free and quick, making it very convenient. The museum offers wonderful insights into Mozart’s life, his family, and his works, with many fascinating details on display. A free app with an audio guide is available, which makes the visit even more engaging and informative. One of the highlights is a special room where instruments are built into the floor—when you walk across it, music begins to play. If you’re visiting with others, it creates a truly delightful and interactive experience. Overall, a well-curated museum that brings Mozart’s story to life in the city where it all began.
Elnur Q — Google review
A must-see in Salzburg. It was fascinating to visit the birthplace of the great musician. The museum houses many of the musician's personal belongings, his musical instruments, and much more. Be sure to use the Mozart Museums Salzburg App as your guide.
Aliaksei A — Google review
Great museum and tribute to Mozart. Informative displays with historical significance. I really like that the museum has a QR code you can scan and have a self guided tour simply with your own phone. We were there on a Sunday and it was not over crowded. They have a few public restrooms also available. The gift shop is very nice and inviting. I highly recommend it.
Debbie M — Google review
The museum collection is quite simple, and tickets can be purchased in advance on the website. When we asked the ticket counter staff about an audio guide, the lady said there wasn’t one — but upon entering, we discovered there is actually a free app to download. The staff didn’t seem very professional, and although the museum mentions having one of the largest collections from the Mozart Association, to be honest, the value for money felt quite low. Also, the weather was very hot, and it felt like a sauna inside the museum.
Penny N — Google review
Nice, but definitely wouldn't go back. A fine visit for a rainy day, but if you have other things to do, this can be skipped. It would have been a bit nicer if they had some of Mozart's music playing as you visit the rooms.
Arcângela R — Google review
Located on Getreidegasse in Salzburg’s Old Town, Mozart’s Birthplace is a fascinating stop for anyone interested in classical music and history. The house where Mozart was born in 1756 has been converted into a well-curated museum displaying his original instruments, family portraits, and letters, giving a personal insight into his early years. The museum is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Ticket prices are €15 for adults, €12 for students under 27, seniors, and groups, €5 for youth (15–18 years), €4.50 for children (6–14 years), and €30 for families. Entry is free for children under six, people with disabilities, and Salzburg Card holders. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds, especially during summer. It’s a short yet enriching experience that captures the essence of Mozart’s genius and Salzburg’s musical heritage.
TheMindisCurious — Google review
We were very excited to visit the home place of Mozart whilst staying in Salzburg as I am a big fan, however I have to say we were not very impressed for few reasons.. 1 Overcrowded, feels like you can't enjoy the place without having 10/15 Japanese on your shoulder coughing and sneezing you in the face.. 2 The interactive section was poorly presented, they should modernize it a bit.. 3 Too expensive for what they offer. Happy to have done it, but wouldn't return.

Historic area in the heart of Salzburg with charming streets, shops, and cafés. Mozart’s Birthplace is a highlight, offering interesting exhibits about his early life. A great spot to stroll, enjoy the architecture, and soak in the city’s musical heritage

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
St. Peter's Abbey, situated in Salzburg, Austria, is a renowned Benedictine monastery and Catholic church with a rich history dating back to the 7th century. Established by Saint Rupert, it stands as one of the oldest abbey-church and monastery complexes in the German-speaking world. The Romanesque St. Peter's Church, built in 1143 and later restored with Baroque and Rococo elements, showcases ornate altarpieces by Martin Johann Schmidt.
The whole area was beautiful. I think I read that the interior of the church is Roccoco style - it was very dark in there. The surrounding of the cemetery and catacomb area offers really picturesque views. Very historic church that was interesting to research !

St. Peter's Abbey is a breathtaking piece of history nestled in the heart of Salzburg. Dating back to the 7th century, this Catholic church and monastery exude an aura of timeless beauty and serenity. The Baroque architecture, intricate decorations, and peaceful atmosphere make it a must-visit for history lovers and spiritual seekers alike. One of the highlights is the picturesque cemetery and catacombs, which offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. The surroundings are stunning, with the abbey seamlessly blending into the rocky landscape. Whether you're admiring the Rococo-style interior or exploring the historical graves, every corner of St. Peter's Abbey tells a story. A visit here is not just about sightseeing—it's an experience that leaves you with a deep appreciation for Salzburg’s rich heritage. Highly recommended.

Very nice Abbey. It’s a great place to take a stroll and look at the cemetery which is uniquely designed. The movie The Sound of Music scene setting was inspired by this abbey, where the Von Trappe family hide so that they can escape. It is worth the visit.
Anand — Google review
The cemetery was unlike anything that I have seen. Though the sound of music took the look of St. Peter's cemetery it was not filmed here. Still very much worth seeing. Walking around the Abby in the court there are some areas open to enter, however I was not dressed church appropriate to enter so I can't comment on the inside

St. Peter’s Kirche in Salzburg has a way of turning an ordinary evening into something quietly transcendent. Tonight’s concert unfolded in that gilded Baroque nave like a gentle revelation. The choir warmed my heart and lifted my soul — not with force, but with a kind of luminous sincerity that made the entire church feel alive. Their harmonies rose into the painted vaults, settled over the crowd, and carried us somewhere softer and more hopeful than the winter night outside. When the applause finally broke, it felt less like clapping and more like gratitude made audible. This resonance is part of the church’s long memory. St. Peter’s stands at the root of Salzburg’s identity, founded around 696 AD by Saint Rupert — the missionary bishop who restored life to the abandoned Roman town of Juvavum. Rupert wasn’t content with rebuilding walls; he rebuilt community. He founded St. Peter’s Abbey as a centre of learning, faith, and culture. From this monastery, Salzburg’s spiritual and intellectual life grew like a flame protected through storms. The church’s architecture embodies this layered history. Romanesque foundations still hold firm beneath Baroque splendour and Rococo grace. Marble columns, gilded altars, and serene paintings draw the eye upward, not to overwhelm but to remind you that beauty is a form of devotion. Music here doesn’t merely echo — it becomes part of a centuries-long conversation. Tonight’s choir stepped directly into that tradition. Their voices seemed to honour Rupert’s original vision: a place where the human spirit is cultivated through prayer, learning, and art. In a world that often runs faster than our hearts can follow, the concert offered a rare stillness — a moment where art, history, and faith touched. Leaving St. Peter’s, the cold felt softer. The world seemed a little more gracious. And that’s the quiet power of this ancient church: it teaches you that the soul can still be lifted, even by the simplest of human gifts — a choir singing together in a sacred place.
Basil C — Google review
Magnificent abbey! You should try to make time for it, but there are so many things to do in Salzburg that this might be difficult. Having said that, if you have two full days in Salzburg, then it's a must-see, and missing this abbey would be a shame.
Dan M — Google review
The cemetery is beautiful, gorgeous, well kept, and full of history! I have never seen grave sites like this! The way families take care of these sites is truly special. We did pay to see the catacombs, though I would say that isn’t necessary.
Olivia H — Google review
The Abbey inside is no different than any other Abbey. But behind the Abbey is fantastic where you see the historical graves and the stone structure built in the mountain. Also the first right turn before the Abbey, if yiu go down that street and up the stairs you get a magnificent view of Salzburg. I assume it is where church people live.

Restaurant
St. Peter Stiftskulinarium is a renowned restaurant that boasts being one of the oldest in Europe, with historical records dating back to 803 A.D. It was established by Benedictine monks and is steeped in history, with tales of famous figures such as Charlemagne and Columbus having dined or drank there. The restaurant offers an elegant ambiance and serves creative dishes and drinks, blending traditional Austrian standards with international specialties.
This was the best meal that I have had in Austria so far! It was incredible! From the atmosphere and being in the oldest restaurant in Central Europe, operating since 803 to the amazing dishes and great vibes, couldn’t ask for a better experience. Would highly recommend and it is a must! The grilled octopus and the duck were incredible and were very well balanced. We will be back!
Walker W — Google review
The oldest currently-operating restaurant in the world, speculated since before AD 803. We visited on a Friday evening without a reservation and were seated right away. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the Christmas atmosphere was wonderful. They also served welcome bread with salted caramel butter, and it was SO GOOD. We could have eaten a whole basket of it. We ordered: • Confit Leg of French Farm Duck (€38.90) Served with red cabbage, cranberry, pain perdu, and chestnuts. We absolutely loved the duck! Incredibly tender and flavorful, with all the sides complementing it perfectly. Highly recommended! • Wiener Schnitzel of Milk-Fed Salzburg Veal Saddle (€34.90) Served with parsley potatoes. It was well-prepared and nicely fried, and we enjoyed it. However, we found it a bit pricey for the portion size, as it wasn’t very filling. • Still water €8.2

This was quite an experience. The place obviously has a rich and interesting history being the oldest restaurant in the world. It did not disappoint. The menu is pretty diverse. I had the Chicken Piccata and it was delicious. One of our party had the blackened shrimp and was a little disappointed when the shrimp weren't exactly blackened as advertised but they still enjoyed the meal. They serve a Cardamom infused butter with their bread and it's amazing. The highlight of the visit though was our waiter, Hoxha. He was attentive but not pushy and went out of his way to accommodate me with an unusual request for dessert. Better yet after the meal was finished, he gave us a tour of the restaurant and recounted to us its fascinating history. This was easily one of the highlights of our visit to Salzburg.
Jacob R — Google review
The food was excellent! I really loved how innovative the dishes were, they mix mango with regular meals in such a creative way that makes every bite unique. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for something delicious. 🤩

Especially with the Christmas atmosphere added in, it was one of the most beautiful restaurants with one of the most special ambiences I’ve ever seen. The staff were extremely attentive and friendly. We tried the schnitzel and the chicken piccata. To be honest, the dishes weren’t as flavorful as I expected; in a restaurant this elegant, I was hoping for more delicious food. You can definitely visit to experience the historic and high-quality atmosphere, but I’m not sure you should keep your expectations too high when it comes to the food.

11 out of 10. This restaurant was incredible and not miss if you’re in Salzburg. The oldest restaurant in Europe does not disappoint. It is carved out of rock with beautiful stone columns. The ambience is warm and inviting with lamp light, and greenery annd incredible artwork. The food is amazing. The service was perfect. Alessandro took exquisite care of us. He was attentive and made incredible suggestions. We started with the Tiger prawn tartare with smoked caviar, which was delicate and amazing. The gazpacho soup was fresh and flavorful. We had the duck which was served in a fois gras sauce with Lingonberry jam toast, which all blended perfectly and melted in your mouth. The frozen nougat dessert with fresh berries was incredible and unique. The coffee was rich in flavorful, served in warm, Demitasse cups. We ended with some apricot Austrian brandy. What a fabulous night to remember! Highly recommend!!!

Café Tomaselli is a delightful gem nestled in the heart of Salzburg's old town, steeped in rich history since its establishment in 1703. This iconic coffeehouse beautifully embodies Austria's café culture, where delectable food and warm company are cherished equally. As you step inside, you're greeted by an enchanting atmosphere featuring dark-wood paneling, elegant marble tables, and vintage decor adorned with crystal chandeliers and baroque paintings.
A truly charming café with a rich history! It’s fascinating to see that the staff still wear traditional old-time outfits, which really adds to the atmosphere and makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. The place has a cozy, welcoming vibe that makes it perfect for a relaxed break. The lunch I had was delicious – fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The hot chocolate was also amazing – rich and comforting, just what you need on a cold day. The waiters were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. There’s also more than enough space to sit comfortably, so you can really enjoy the experience without feeling crowded. If you’re looking for a historic spot with excellent food, drinks, and a unique atmosphere, Café Tomaselli is a must-visit! Highly recommend it for anyone in the area.

After our Sound of Music tour, we were so happy to find Café Tomaselli right in the middle of St. Stephen’s Square. This place is charming and filled with energy, and we found a balcony seat on the second floor — perfect for people-watching! We had kombucha tea, passion fruit soda, and apple strudel, all light and refreshing. Service was friendly, though there’s no AC, so it can get warm on hot days. Still, a great spot to recharge and soak in Salzburg’s historic vibe.

Great location at a beautiful, historic cafe. Our group enjoyed a traditional breakfast of eggs, pastries, and coffee. Wish the service was friendlier. We ordered three omelets with cheese (no ham) and one plain omelet. When server arrived with two omelets that had ham, getting two of our orders wrong, he tried to argue with us over the error.

Atmosphere was great. Very historic. Unfortunately we had to tell our waiter to clean the table after we had sat. Other than that service was fast. The tiramisu cake was delicious and so was the coffee.
Dickran K — Google review
I’d go for the vibes. The cafe takes you to another century, and it was especially interesting to go in the early morning as there are actually locals enjoying their coffee before work. As for the cakes we had the apple strudel and another one but it wasn’t mind blowing, nor the cappuccino.

We searched for the best hot chocolate in town, we were expecting a luscious , decadent , rich hot chocolate .. the reality was hot milk with cocoa powder , I am absolutely certain my 7 years old daughter with her eyes closed can cook something much better than what we got . On the other hand the Mozart cake was very good . The staff doesn’t speak good English and there are no lactose intolerant product , on their menu there was an almond milk listing , I asked for a hot chocolate made with that milk, the answer was no. I would recommend going somewhere else .

We found this wonderful place while strolling through Salzburg. What a place to stumble across! Very busy when were there, but it didn't take long to get a table. Our waiter was top notch and took care of us with expertise. The food was delicious, we had the pretzel, the pair of sausages, and the chocolate banana torte. The interior of the cafe was very distinguished and well taken care of. Would love to try this place again when we go back to Salzburg!

Restaurant
Esszimmer is a charming restaurant located at the foot of Monchsberg in Salzburg, Austria. The intimate and cozy atmosphere makes it a favorite spot for those who appreciate contemporary Austrian cuisine. The yellow-hued room with a fireplace creates a romantic setting, perfect for enjoying carefully composed tasting menus. The chef, Andreas Kaiblinger, is known for his passion for cooking and uses high-quality ingredients like Hecht from Attersee to create punchy flavors in his dishes.
We had dinner here on our honeymoon in Salzburg and had an amazing experience! The restaurant is family operated and feels quaint and not stuffy. We did the Esszimmer tasting menu with wine pairing and every bite was incredible, presentation was spectatular. They will ask up top if you have a concert or anything you need to get to. If you say no, make sure you have time for a 3+ hour experience as there is some waiting between courses. We enjoyed the building anticipation and sipping our paired wine during that time! Highly recommend dinner here if you're in Salzburg.

I could not be more happy with our dining experience at Esszimmer! From the moment we walked in until when we left, the staff was extremely attentive and friendly. We enjoyed how they described each one of the seven courses along with suggesting wine pairings. It was a family affair there, the mother who ran the restaurant along with her daughter were both working there and it was so cute! Thank you for the amazing evening!

Treated myself to a nice dinner alone with a book and I'm glad I did it here. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxing and comfortable with very friendly staff. The esszimmer tasting menu was superb and overall found the dishes incredibly delicate and not banging you over the head. I look forward to my next visit.

Phenomenal food! Such great flavour and very inventive. The other reviews were right about how great this restaurant is. My husband and I both loved it. Every item of food was delightful. I had the vegetarian menu and he had the Esszimmer menu with the pigeon. (If you are wondering what to wear the atmosphere and guest attire are somewhat casual. Don't wear a t-shirt but most everyone wore sneakers)

My visit to Esszimmer was fantastic. Easily the best meal I had on my first trip to Austria. The staff was courteous and attentive. The meal was unique and nicely paced. I enjoyed each of the 7 courses.

Lovely interior Excellent service Amazing food After reading about this restaurant in lonely planet we decided to book for our upcoming holiday and we were not disappointed. We chose the lunch menu with paired wines and were spoilt with a delicious welcome of beef tartare, followed by tuna three ways which was melt in your mouth perfection! Then a duck dish, again perfectly cooked and paired with delicious rich wine. Finishing with a Christmas flavoured dessert! Excellent service throughout the meal and a great experience.

My husband and I went for our anniversary. I can’t say much on the way of parking because we walked. When we walked in we were immediately greeted by wonderful staff who took our coats. Our table was nicely set up with adorable Christmas ornaments. They provide side tables for purses and phones to avoid crowding the table which is a nice touch. I selected the vegetarian menu and it did not disappoint. The menu tasted like a homey holiday meal. The flavors were complex and warm. Each dish just felt like warm love. It started with polenta thyme, onion, truffle. It was like buttery smooth fancy mash potatoes with the flavor of what can only be described as happy warm tears from Christmas angels. It comes in multiple dollops which was extremely filling. (This is a cold dish) Next was lentils curry and eggplant. It was the best curry I’ve ever had. It has little crunchy pieces of toast that added a really wam bam thank you ma’am to the whole dish. (This is a warm dish) Stuffed onion, celery, and sweet pepper was the third dish. It was like a fancy lasagna but the lasagna noodles are actually big pieces of onion. The onion isn’t overwhelming- you might think it is because the onion pieces are so large but you’d be wrong, it’s extremely balanced. The sweet pepper just dances on your tongue. Super yummers. (This is a warm dish) Beet-root gnocchi serves as the 4th dish. This was my least favorite- this does not indicate that it’s bad. Beets just have a very earthy taste, to me, and this was no different. I still enjoyed the dish very much. (This is a warm dish) Chestnut-red wine-lime dessert was ah-mazing. Those little lime dollops were like electoral pops in your mouth. The ice cream was tart but balanced with the cake very well. I enjoyed this dessert very much. (This is a cold dish) I will probably never have a meal this nice again in my entire life. It’s worth the money. The only moderately moody thing I can say is I wish all the meals were the same number of courses. My husband got a 7 course meal/ mine was 5 courses and we didn’t have dishes that came out at the same time and he got two desserts- he shared which is nice but I would have loved to have had the same number of courses.

The dishes were well executed with good presentation. Ingredients were also good. The service is too amateur for a one star restaurant and the dining room was a little too hot.

Austrian restaurant
Restaurant
Bärenwirt is a traditional Austrian inn located in Salzburg City, dedicated to preserving the iconic culture and cuisine of the region. The restaurant is renowned for its fried chicken, which is considered the best in Austria, as well as other classics like Salzburger Nockerl. The cozy tavern offers a warm, woody atmosphere reminiscent of a hunting lodge and has been serving traditional dishes since 1663.
I had been looking forward to this for at least two weeks, and it was exactly what I expected—the fried chicken was SO FREAKING GOOD. The outside was perfectly fried, and the tender, juicy meat was just right. They even served a sour potato salad on the side. This was the first time I’d ever finished an entire potato salad; it was really good. I managed to finish both the chicken and the salad, even though the portion was huge for me.

We stopped by for late lunch and got the spinach dumpling. It was divine!! That, paired with brown butter + cheese - 🤤 so satisfying, even for a meat lover. Aside from that, we had Apple strudel. It was perfectly balance with the cream and somehow tasted very homey. Not too sweet. And of course had beer - which is always nice and refreshing. Wanted to try their fried chicken as I saw many good reviews on it but sadly we were too full. Please do me a favour and try it ok? 😝 Service could be better as no one took our order for quite some time, even though there weren’t many customers at that time.

The food is totally overrated. We ordered the pork ribs, schnitzel, and half fried chicken. The pork ribs were very dry, tough, and had a strong porky smell — not juicy at all, and I think they were overcooked. The schnitzel was average, and the rice that came with the dishes was rather tasteless. The fried chicken was not tender; the meat was dry and lacked flavor — honestly, even KFC or simple street-stall fried chicken tastes better. The restaurant’s ventilation is also poor, and the smell of cooking oil lingered on our clothes after dining. On top of that, the prices are quite high compared to the quality. Overall, it’s really not worth a visit.

It’s recommended to have a reservation here before coming - we didn’t, but we were able to get an outdoors table arranged by the staff. We were initially turned away by the staff at the front desk (claiming that all the seats were reserved), but they were ?fortunately able to find us a table, after it was strongly suggested to them that many of the tables were empty. Once seated, service was prompt and efficient. The food took about 10-15 minutes to be prepared, and we were seated next to the kitchen windows where we heard lots of cooking noises. I whiled the time away imagining the schnitzel getting hammered away, it was effective. We also got the fried chicken - it was basic, you get exactly what was in the menu description, but it was fried beautifully, and the meat was appropriately tender. The schnitzel was similarly tasty, and went very well with the jam. The sausage was alright, just your standard Austrian fare. So was the dessert, it would have been ideal if there was an option to add ice cream to it, but there wasn’t (or maybe they were out of ice cream that day). We paid by credit card, and the WCs were well maintained but not the most accessible (requires stairs). Once we had finished our meal, it started raining and I thought the service staff did a wonderful job in ushering everyone back into the main restaurant. Overall, pretty decent food for standard (Austrian) prices, I’d definitely consider coming back (with a reservation) ;)

This a typical austrian pub, where you can find good beer and good food. I highly recommend booking beforehand. I tasted the goulash, the pork cutlet and the grilled sausage. Everthing was tasty, with herbs and spices perfectly balanced. The goulash was my favorite, with a side of knödel which was the perfect addition

Nothing to hype about this place, the food is decent, but not as surprisingly good or a must try place as others have mentioned. One thing that really bothered me was the greeter’s attitude, they seemed to look down on us for not having a reservation on a not so busy weekday lunchtime.

Solid Joint Simple and to the point. The beer was cold, the plates were hot, and I can honestly say the tomato soup is the best I've ever had it my life. Get it while you can since it is on the seasonal menu. Grab the fried chicken, squeeze lemon over it and you will not be disappointed. Inside it may get loud, as there is very little room for the noise to escape, but it makes all the better for a home-type feel that the restaurant gives off. Definitely one of the more better restaurants we tried in the city. Give something a try here, especially if you are looking for a more traditional plate here in Salzburg. We wanted to try something authentically local and found this restaurant. Excellent food and service. Despite last minute walk in, they gave us a table. Thank you.

Takeout Restaurant
Balkan Grill Walter, also known as "The Bosna Grill," is a beloved spot in Salzburg that has gained a cult following among both locals and international travelers. This Bulgarian-inspired, Salzburg-born specialty features two grilled bratwurst sausages in a toasted white bread bun, topped with chopped onions, fresh parsley, and a secret curry-based seasoning mixture created by the owner over 50 years ago.
We had the original Bosna here. Loved it. The original comes with just the sausage and small diced onions/parsley and a spiced powder. This small (truly) a hole in the wall has a great food. Been in this spot for 75 years and going. Worth the wait. There were 15 or so people in line at any given time.

It’s more a hype than something extraordinary. Don’t waste your time in a long queue. The Bosna is made fresh but there is not enough sauce in it. The sausage is too peppery and the canned refreshment was just was on room temperature. In this category, I would say it is better to eat a kasekrainer in any würstelstands. The servers were kind and fast. Card is payment is accepted.

We ordered menu items No. 1, 2, and 3. To be honest, they all tasted quite similar—good, but nothing particularly memorable. The one standout element was the use of curry powder, which gave the dishes a slightly unique twist. Overall, the food was average and the portions were relatively small. In my opinion, the place is a bit overrated given the hype. It’s fine for a quick bite, but not something I’d go out of my way for.

This sandwich is all over Instagram. There was a huge queue to get to the little window where the sandwiches are sold. They cost 6.20€ each and we payed with cash, unfortunately I cannot tell if they accept card payments above certain value... We bought 2 and we payed with cash. They offer different sandwiches but we chose the original one: with some onions, parsley and some spices, the sausages were really well spiced and flavorful, then they put a mix of spices that resembles a curry. It is a different experience. If I went back I probably wouldn't chose the original because I am not really a big fan of raw onions but the sandwich was really good overall!! The queue is big but it moves quick. The lady's behind the window work pretty fast and they are nice and polite!! You can see the sausages being grilled and your sandwiches getting assembled! It is good because you can get this sandwich and walk around the beautiful streets while having a delicious treat!!

We came around noon and there was already a long line, which seems to be quite common here. We waited for about 10 minutes. We ordered two original hotdogs — they were decent, but not particularly outstanding in my opinion. Still, it’s worth a try if you’re in the area and curious about a local classic.

A nice spot to grab a Bosna if you're in the old town. It's no frills and is tucked away in a small alley. When you order, you just eat standing in the alleyway. If they ask if you want it to go, just say no since everything is to go. If you order to go, they wrap it in foil and put it in a bag which just seems wasteful if you're going to immediately eat it.

Tucked away in a tiny side street, we found a long line of people — all waiting for food from a small Balkan-Grill stand. Of course, we got curious and joined in. The “hot-dog-style” snack was pretty good, nothing too special, but tasty enough. Probably the most affordable bite in the old town — and clearly a local favorite! 😄

Enjoying an iconic Bosna at Balkan-Grill Walter, a crispy roll filled with juicy bratwurst, onions, parsley, and that legendary spice blend. Invented in 1949 by Bulgarian Zanko Todoroff, this Salzburg street food classic has been winning hearts ever since. A must-try bite of history and flavor! 🤤
