Brno

Brno is a city in the Czech Republic. It’s known for its modernist buildings, like the restored Villa Tugendhat, completed in 1930 by architect Mies van der Rohe. The medieval Špilberk Castle houses a city museum, gardens and a former prison with vaulted tunnels. The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul has baroque altars, a 14th-century statue of the Madonna and Child, and city views from its steeple.

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, situated atop Petrov Hill in the heart of Brno, is a remarkable Gothic Catholic cathedral with a Baroque interior. Its 84-meter-tall twin towers and splendid architecture make it one of the most important Czech cultural monuments. Visitors can climb the tower for panoramic views of Brno. The cathedral's history includes a legend about two feuding architects who incorporated statues of angels making unholy gestures towards each other into their respective churches.
St. Peter and Paul Cathedral is one of Brno’s most iconic and breathtaking landmarks. Perched on Petrov Hill, it offers spectacular views of the city and a striking silhouette visible from afar. The cathedral’s Gothic architecture, twin spires, and beautifully decorated interior create a powerful sense of history and spiritual grandeur. Inside, you’ll find stunning stained glass, ornate altars, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for reflection. Don’t miss the climb to the tower, where the bells famously ring at 11 a.m. instead of noon. A visit here is a truly inspiring experience and a highlight of any trip to Brno.

Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, Brno This beautiful church sits on a hill and is easy to spot with its tall twin towers. Inside, it’s peaceful and full of history, with lovely decorations. You can climb the towers for great views of Brno. It’s a must-see if you’re visiting the city.

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is a Roman Catholic cathedral located on the Petrov hill in the Brno-střed district of the city of Brno in the Czech Republic. It is commonly referred to locally as simply "Petrov". It is the seat of the Diocese of Brno and a national cultural monument that is one of the most important pieces of architecture in South Moravia. The interior is mostly Baroque in style, while the exterior shell is Gothic that dates mostly from the 14th century, and its impressive 84-metre-high towers were constructed to the Gothic Revival designs of the architect August Kirstein between 1901 and 1909. The original cathedral site dates to the 11th century. (Wikipedia)

Beatiful cathedral, rich and very interesting treasury, it is a must if you visit this nice Czech city. It would be even helpful if the information texts are also available in English and not only in local language.

A historic church on top of a tiny hilltop .. a brief walk from city Center, the church is maintained well. Recommended if you are in Brno !!

Beautiful Gothic cathedral in Brno! The twin spires are iconic and visible from all over the city. Interior is gorgeous with beautiful stained glass and peaceful atmosphere. The climb to the tower is definitely worth it - amazing panoramic views of Brno and the surrounding countryside. Easy to reach in the city center. Free entry, small fee for tower access. A must-see landmark when visiting Brno!
Kate — Google review
What a lovely experience, got to the place right before the service finished (around 17 something on a Thursday), managed to catch the beautiful sounds of a large pipe organ - the sound was amazing. There is a park around the cathedral’s perimeter with beautiful surroundings, you can see the whole city from afar from different angles, there are also a few cafes to sit super close to the cathedral or you can simply relax and enjoy your time with your own food and drink on one of the numerous benches (with the backs) that are located across the area
Elina — Google review
Beautiful. The bell tower was amazing. Great views of Brno and a historic view of the church. Two majestic cathedrals in one building.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the heart of Brno, Czech Republic, Špilberk Castle is a captivating medieval fortress that dates back to the 13th century. Originally constructed by King Premysl Otakar II as a royal residence, it evolved into a formidable baroque stronghold and later gained notoriety as one of the most notorious prisons during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Known as 'the prison of nations,' its dungeons housed political prisoners and revolutionaries alike.
Climbing the castle was not easy in this incredible summer weather. People on foot should be careful. It must have been hard. It would have been nice if there was still shade of trees. The trees didn't block much sunlight. It was really hard to climb the hill in hot weather. Then I went into the museum of the castle, which was big and had several rooms, but it was not good because I had to carry and see a booklet in English. Viewing is possible up to the third floor. It was convenient because there was a clean bathroom.
웅냥냥 — Google review
Definitely worth a visit. You can spend hours here. I went for the museum and there are three levels you can explore. You get to learn about the castle‘s history and architecture. There are also exhibitions for you to explore and many art pieces for you to marvel at. Please note it is definitely a hike up! Recommend to wear appropriate shoes.
Valerie H — Google review
Špilberk Castle in Brno, Czech Republic, is a top destination for visitors seeking history and charm. Easily walkable from the city center, the castle offers a scenic uphill stroll with rewarding views. Its exhibitions are excellent, detailing the castle’s transformation from a medieval stronghold to a Baroque prison, with captivating displays of artifacts. The stories of prisoners, once confined in the castle’s eerie casemates, bring to life the harsh realities of their imprisonment under Habsburg rule. The castle’s restaurant, located on-site, provides a cozy spot to enjoy traditional Czech cuisine or lighter fare, complementing the nearby café for snacks and drinks. The highlight remains the castle’s beautifully tended garden, a tranquil oasis perfect for relaxing. Špilberk Castle blends rich history, engaging exhibits, dining options, and stunning gardens, making it a must-see in Brno.
Nurul H — Google review
The fortress is a wonderful place to spend some time. The walk up to the fortress is mildly strenuous but pleasantly green. The exhibitions are absolutely worth visiting and very comprehensive. The view from the fortress walls or its tower is also beautiful. Definitely a must-visit if you are in Brno.
SIB — Google review
Špilberk castle is a must-visit if you’re in Brno. Whether you’re drawn to its medieval architecture, Ghostly prison history, lush gardens, or unforgettable city views, it’s easy to spend whole day exploring at a relaxed pace. Perfect for a casual stroll, a dose of culture, and a dash of scenic beauty. Recommend it!
Maria A — Google review
only problem was that it took me an eternity to find a toilet, but i had to "pay" for it when i got in. other than that, this castle seems very nice and it offers great views
Alex — Google review
If you stay Brno few days and have a lot of time, you can visit here. If not, you don't need to. If you want to go into the royal chapel, you have to buy another ticket.
Jessica K — Google review
It’s beautiful. Walking around inside the walls is free and you can buy tickets to have a look in the look out tower or the treasury.

Historical landmark
Villa Tugendhat, a masterpiece of modernist architecture, was designed by architect Ludwig van der Rohe in 1929 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The villa, located in a prestigious residential area, showcases an open-plan design and innovative use of materials such as onyx, chrome, travertine, and ebony. Guided tours offer visitors the chance to explore this iconic building that represents the cutting-edge technology and concepts of its time.
UNESCO World Heritage site. An absolutely must-see building designed by architect Mies van der Rohe. A quiet and relaxing place. We were only able to visit the exterior since the interior tours are fully booked three months in advance. Downstairs, there is a small shop with a few exhibition pieces and souvenirs
SIB — Google review
Amazing experience! An absolutely iconic building – Villa Tugendhat is a must-see. We only joined the outside tour, but the whole experience was much more than I expected. The architecture and atmosphere are truly breathtaking. Our tour guide was also fantastic – even though we booked in Czech (the only option available), we were kindly given information in English as well. A big thank you to our guide on August 19th at 10:30, who gave us extra explanations in English – it made the visit even more special. Highly recommended!
Tom G — Google review
we were able to get last minute tickets for the outside tour. very informative and well worth it. thoroughly enjoyed. highly recommend.
Bobbi-Jean N — Google review
The most impressive Mies van der Rohe villa I've ever visited. Overwhelming in its sheer size. The mandatory guided tour is of appalling quality. A young woman babbled indistinctly in a flat voice. The previous guide and his group ignored the allotted time, forcing our group to wait interminably and then being rushed through the villa at breakneck speed. Then there's the morbid realization that the Jewish initiators and residents, like virtually all artists in Czechoslovakia, even Cápek himself, were murdered by German Nazism.
John K — Google review
Villa Tugendhat has been on my list for years, but I never made the trip to Brno until now. It completely exceeded expectations. It’s huge — a dream for anyone who loves modernism and mid-century design. The views of the city and the surrounding park are stunning. The only caveat: the gift shop could use better designed merch, especially for a site this iconic. A must see visit in person
Adeline K — Google review
It was a shock for me to see such a futuristic villa in 1930 by the master Meis Von Der Rohe The main feeling it’s one floor amazing Design But soon you will see it is 2 floors I couldn’t get inside as it is Monday I had to sleep over on Brno to get inside it tomorrow It’s a must see for any architect or designer or art lover The round glass by the door is so advanced by that time and the opening through the building into the garden and the mountains of Brno is so advanced and timeless
Rma Y — Google review
A real must see when visiting Brno! The almost 100 year old villa is a design phenomenon with its breathtaking interiors, furniture and technology! Also a big shout out and thank you to our guide Sophia! 🥰 It was really nice to chat with her and her tour was nicely executed.

Located on Radnicka street, the Gate of the Old City Hall, also known as Stara radnice, now functions as a Touristic Information Centre. As you approach the building, you'll encounter a peculiar sight - a 5-meter crocodile in the corridor, which is actually a nod to an ancient legend about a dragon residing near Svratka river. Venture further and you'll be greeted by a towering structure standing at 63 meters high.
Nice!

The Old Town Hall is the oldest building in Brno, with its origins dating back to the 13th century. It was the administrative center of the city, including serving as the seat of the city council, a courtroom, and even a prison at different points in time. Gothic architecture and also serves as tourist information centre. It’s close to the main square.

Nothing special. But the view was good from the tower. If you want to see the view of the city, then go to the cathedral of peter paul, the cathedral is pretty inside and the way to the tower was spooky

Nice views over Brno from the tower, and walking around you see all directions. In the staircase you find an Exhibition on historic architects responsible for this Construction. And, in the gate there is still the old crocodile!

Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
Nestled just north of Brno, the Moravian Karst is a stunning natural reserve that boasts over 1,000 caves and gorges spread across an impressive 92 square kilometers. This remarkable area is renowned for its geological marvels, including the enchanting Punkva Caves with their striking stalactites and stalagmites, as well as underground rivers and sinkholes.
One of the most beautiful places near Brno. Amazing views inside the cave and also guided tour in Czech and English languages. I would say it is quite rare to see well preserved karsts nowadays, which makes them more unique. I would also recommend to book tickets to the caves in advance.
Andrii K — Google review
I purchased ticket for interesting little train, as from a fairy tale in advance. This train takes you within 20 min ride to Punkovne Jeskine caves. You can also walk however you’ll need an extra condition for it, walk takes ca 50 min. I purchased ticket for the cave also in advance, because I do not want surprises. The tour inside cave was fantastically organized. Its beautiful stalactites can be seen by the boat ride, then you start walking when you reach the little lake, its mesmerizing blue color visible by sun rays touch so make sure you go there around 2pm.
Iskra R — Google review
I went on a tour in English with Rostislav Janis via Get Your Guide for “Discover Moravian Karst: Seven stops, one Tailored Tour” and it was by far the best thing I could have done. So beautiful and professionally managed. The Churches and caves were particularly beautiful.
Lucy R — Google review
Fantastic nature. It's worth to visit of you want to have a pleasant walk and see the beauty of nature. I can't help but share that the guides of the caves are not polite persons. They don't speak English or just a little. They don't know the worlds "please", "thanks". They hurry you and turns of the lights.
Artur D — Google review
One of the best trips. absolutely Loved the cave. if forests and caves are any interest to you and you are visiting Brno City then Moravian Karst is a must visit. I visited in Jan 2022, it was super cold and snowing but absolutely beautiful forest to see and hike. During winter the only cave that was open for public was Punkva which is the largest among the five caves that are located at the Moravian Karst. i have read that the five caves are open for public visit during summer only. the Moravian Karst is located very near to Blansko town ( usually a train goes from Brno to Blansko, but during my visit the trains wasn't working so took Itook the bus ) the trip by bus/ train from Brno to Blankso is about 30 min ride. then when you arrive to Blansko its around 25 min ride via a taxi/ car to arrive to the Moravian Karst. there is no public transportation that goes there so having a car or a taxi is a must if you cant walk for that long. if you are a tourist and don't speak Czech, then i highly advice to book a taxi in advance before your arrival, because its very hard to find people who speak English in Blansko, also when i arrived it was Sunday and there were absolutely no taxi driver anywhere close to the station. the town was very empty not sure if it was because of Sunday or this is the norm there. Uber, Bolt and any other similar services doesn't work there as well. ( you can find taxi companies online that you can call and book in advance ) when you arrive to the Moravian Karst there is an internal train that picks you up from the information office to drop you at meeting point for the tour to the cave. please make sure to arrive before your tour at least 45 min in advance. if your tour is starting at 12 then arrive at 11.15 latest. i arrived 25 min before my tour starts to find that the train has already left so i had to wait for two hours+ for the second tour to go. the tours are only in Czech language but even though i didn't understand what the guide is saying i did enjoy the tour a-lot as the cave absolutely looks magnificent. Booking in advance is a MUST. as there is some days/ times where there is no tours at all. so make sure to book your ticket in advance before your plan your trip. I rated it 4 out of five because the tour wasn't well organised at all and there was absolutely no information that i need to arrive more than 30 min before the tour or i will miss the train. it should have been written in the website instead of making visitors wait for more than two hours for the next tour.
Seham Y — Google review
A beautiful place to walk. The tram/lift to the top is fast and allows you to look into the abyss you will see later on the tour. The tour is through a narrow walk way with many stairs, and a boat ride! Loved this tour. It was in Czech, but our friends translated the important parts. Nice gemstone gift shop, too.
Patti M — Google review
This was one of the best experiences ever! We had a guide take us from Brno to the caves. So glad she handled the specifics. (as most areas there cash is king) We took the little train up to the cave entrance. The English phamplet described each spot perfectly. The boat ride out was awesome! Seeing the bottom of the abyss was beautiful! We rode the cable car up and viewed the abyss from above. Overall nice experience and peaceful. Would strongly recommend.
Christa D — Google review
A very amazing place which you must see if you are close to Brno. And remember to book the tickets in advance, because you will otherwise risk to wait for several hours before you're granted access.

Definitely one of my top choices for Brno. Nice seating, professional service. Food is delicious and just right. We had oysters, some scallops, soup, octopus and steak. All was done to perfection and we really enjoyed our meal.

While in Brno, visit this restaurant, it is superlative. We had a fantastic service, with super tasty steaks and burgers. The wine cellar is great too. One of the best meal I had in a long time. Efficient and on time, the meat was first class, well done to the chef, and the waiters. All thumbs up

Very friendly and service minded waitress. The food was very good. Wine selection also very good with different countries and grapes. It would be nice with some live candles at the tables to make a cozy atmosphere.

Yes this place was excellent. A 5 minute walk from the busy BRNO square, but far enough away to be able to enjoy a nice quiet dinner away from the party-goers in BRNO downtown. Service was excellent, with lots of recommends for food and wine. Ribeye was cooked beautifully, and would recommend the spicy corn. Also a fantastic Israel Cabernet for the wine.

Dined here in Aug 2022. Located just outside the main city centre, Pavillon was a great dining place with a good menu. I ordered the octopus for starters and had a steak for the main course. Both were excellent. The portion size is quite good and it was quite filling. The service was fantastic too and the waiter helped me with some good gin recommendations as I like G&Ts. Restaurant
Stopkova Plzeňská Pivnice is a relaxed pub with a rustic atmosphere, offering traditional broths and meat dishes along with a selection of beer and wine. The pub features a distinctive curved copper bar topped with a brewing kettle, creating an authentic Pilsner Urquell ambiance. Housed in a neo-renaissance building dating back to the gothic period, this establishment has been serving patrons since the late 19th century.
We ordered the typical Old Czech cuisine and it didn't disappoint at all. The portion is big to the price. We shared between 3 small Asian women and still overly full. The roasted duck is very tender, all small cuts are very tasty and surprisingly different to each other, and the dumplings are excellent. Definitely a very popular pub to the locals. Worth the recommendation!

Absolutely outstanding! The grilled tenderloin beef steak was perfectly cooked, juicy, and full of flavor – one of the best I’ve had in Brno. Finished with their almond cheesecake, which was heavenly. A must-visit for food lovers!

The best place to try traditional Czech cuisine in Brno! We liked it so much that we came back here twice during our stay in the city. Very tasty, huge selection, large portions, and made with love. Especially liked the veal tartare and duck. Attentive and cheerful staff - high level experience of every aspect customer might think.

We really enjoyed this place! 🍻 The portions are big, the food is traditional and very tasty, and the beer is excellent. The service was friendly and efficient. Highly recommend trying the ribs or the pork knuckle – both were amazing. Definitely a great spot in Brno for hearty Czech food and a good pint.

So I went to this place because they had smoked lamb sausages on the menu but they did not taste like lamb at all. The duck was rather dry and not very flavorful. However, the dark beer was good. I would not go back to this place. The service was efficient, though unfriendly, it seemed.

Atelier Bar & Bistro is a top recommendation for those seeking a dining experience that combines modernity with traditional flavors. The restaurant's focus on contemporary Czech cuisine offers a fresh take on classic dishes, all served in a chic and minimalist setting. Led by a team of confident and collaborative chefs, bartenders, and staff, Atelier creates an atmosphere where guests can enjoy the simple pleasures of great food and drink in an unassuming yet friendly environment.
We had the tartare which was good and the cheese cuts, so not much of the food. Services was top notch, also it’s a pet friendly place. They have local wines; Palava was very good.

Easily the best meal I had in Brno. Fresh and sublime flavors, service is top notch, decor is beautiful - including the entrance through the courtyard. Cannot recommend this place enough! Thanks for a lovely dining experience :)
Fiona M — Google review
I initially reserved a table for 2030 as this was the only advertised time available so I thought combined with a high review score of 4.7 on Google we were in for a treat. There were lots of free tables so I don’t understand the restriction on the reservation time. I would say it was only 10% of tables occupied. The wine and food were excellent. The waitress was polite and knowledgeable about the menu. Chef clearly has cooking skills. Sadly, portion sizes are way too small for A La Carte and the menu would do better if portion sizes were slightly smaller but extended into a Tasting Menu over 7 to 9 courses. My dessert was gone in 3 bites! Price for 2 mains, desserts, wine and coffee came to 2305 Kc. Though the food is excellent the concept does not feel right and as such will not be returning until there is a significant change to the menu and how it is structured given the portion sizes. I wanted to be fed not have the food shown off to me.

I was looking for a nice dinner place and landed here. The service was super professional and nice. The food was very good just the portions were tiny. The price was a little bit high but as well as the quality. I can really recommend this place

Fancy looking and fancy tasting meals. I recommend this place for either a bit more official meeting, of for a posh hanging out with your friends or your spouse. The environment at the covered inner yard of the building is nice, but it might be a bit noisy due to echo coming from the talking guests. My dinner consisted from 2 fish dishes - a starter and a main course. Both meal were very artistic and tasty. I liked the main course a bit more, probably because it was a warm meal.

KOISHI fish & sushi restaurant in Brno is a top-notch dining spot that has been serving authentic and fresh fish and sushi dishes for the past 10 years. The owner, Janko Martinkovic, made sure to bring in a Japanese Sushi Master to ensure the highest quality and freshness of their offerings. This dedication to excellence has earned KOISHI a place on the best restaurants list in the Czech Republic.
A very good and fancy restaurant. Unfortunately, the sushi chef has break from 3pm to 5pm, and we didn't know that. But main course was also delicious and served in a very aesthetical manner. The personnel is professionally good. The best part was the dessert - pumpkin cheesecake is one love now! The restaurant definitely has one of the best service in the city.

Lokál U Caipla, located near the cathedral, is a popular pub and restaurant offering traditional Czech classics such as svickova na smetane, a dish featuring sliced beef in creamy sauce with bread dumplings. The establishment boasts a variety of pouring styles for their cold pilsner, including hladinka, snyt, and mliko.
If you're in Brno and looking for a place where amazing flavors meet genuine hospitality, U Caipla is the spot to visit! Every dish we tried was absolutely delicious – from the way it was served to the incredible taste. Fresh ingredients, carefully prepared meals, and generous portions made the whole experience unforgettable. What stood out even more was the incredibly kind and welcoming staff. They made us feel right at home, and that truly elevated our entire visit. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to enjoy a real culinary gem in Brno. We’ll definitely be coming back!

A traditional czech restaurant mostly local crowd.. the main course is nice and side dishes are free flow .. there is this foam beer where I guess only foam and little beer, the apple strudel is lousy, cold and had a frozen smell ..

Really good beer. Food also good but kind of small portions. I would recommend reserving by a table as it is quite busy.
Spiros V — Google review
The food is okay. Goulash is nice. However, the service is the worst as well as the wait time. You don’t feel welcome here and wait 30 minutes for something which is already cooked and they just get it warm for you. The place wasn’t busy at all when we visited. The waiter was rude.
AK A — Google review
Had some time prior to hotel check in and I need lunch. I ordered from the lunch menu and was about to start planning my afternoon of walking around when my food came out. Extremely fast service. Never knew boiled spinach could taste good.
Kevin S — Google review
This restaurant is fine if you don't know where else to go. We waited 50 mins for our food. Prices were ok, but the goulash I ate was 90% bread and sauce, 10% meat (it literally had 4 small cubes of meat). If you're hungry maybe consider a bigger dish. The woman who took our order was extremely rude, the girl who served us water was friendly, so I think it depends on the person.

Service was fast, preparation of the food was fast, although it was packed. If you drink a couple of beers, the good fits quite well. If you cannot stand noise, don't sit inside!

I must have ordered the wrong thing, but oh well, the pork ribs were calling out to me. They were not freshly prepared and semi warm leftovers, served with a side of a huge dollop of mustard and then a side dollop of horseradish and some very healthy bread. I found the plate to look unappetising. Nothing green on the plate and I chose one of the more expensive options. The ribs were unremarkable unfortunately. Service was great however! There was a local dish I wanted to try but I did not see it on the menu.
