Assisi

Assisi is a hill town in central Italy’s Umbria region. It was the birthplace of St. Francis (1181–1226), one of Italy’s patron saints. The Basilica of St. Francis is a massive, 2-level church, consecrated in 1253. Its 13th-century frescoes portraying the life of St. Francis have been attributed to Giotto and Cimabue, among others. The crypt houses the saint’s stone sarcophagus.

Castles
Rocca Maggiore is a grand medieval fortress that has loomed over Assisi for over 800 years. The castle offers panoramic views and houses historical artifacts. Nearby, visitors can explore the Roman Amphitheatre, now a public garden, and the Basilica di Santa Chiara, where St. Clare of Assisi is buried. Eremo dell Carceri, a serene monastery nestled in the trees just outside of town, provides another peaceful retreat.
Wonderful, easy uphill walk from Assisi’s center (from which everything is either uphill or downhill!). The fort commands a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. Tickets to get in and tour the fort run €6. No need to pay to enjoy the view, but the climb up the tower is well worth the ticket price.

It was a rainy day so maybe that impacted my mood, but it wasn’t the best experience. Seeing the Banksy exhibit was fairly cool. I was sad the spiral staircase was roped off- not sure how long it will take to fix??? There was also a concert that night so the crew was limiting being able to walk around the grounds, so views were limited and the grounds were a mess.
Randy H — Google review
The view is great, there is small place where to buy snacks and something to drink. You can walk over there, by car and one agency is coordinating the transportation. To go inside, better to buy in advance the ticket.

Rocca Maggiore is a medieval fortress that overlooks Assisi and the Umbrian Valley, and certainly should be visited when you go to Assisi. It was originally constructed in the 12th century and expanded in the 14th century and it served both as a military stronghold and a symbol of papal authority. You can explore its towers and narrow passageways within the walls, and enjoy incredible views of the valley, and of the town below. Currently there is an exhibition of the work of English artist Banksy, included with the admission price of €8.
D. M — Google review
This was a real climb to get too. You can drive up. This fortress is nearly 1000 years old and facisnating. The view is spectacular. There was also a Banksy exhibition on which was fabulous.
Stephanie D — Google review
The most interesting place in Assisi. The path to the fort is a bit steep but well worth the effort. Do not miss the tunnel between the main fort and the tower.
Juan C — Google review
Beautiful spot. To be fair I did not pay admission. Just sat on the lawn area with my wife enjoying the beautiful views.

An impressive ancient edifice. We went specifically to see a Banksy exhibit.

Here is a 500-word review of the **Basilica of Santa Chiara** in Assisi, Italy: --- **Basilica of Santa Chiara – A Sacred Gem in the Heart of Assisi** Nestled on the slopes of Assisi with sweeping views over the Umbrian valley, the **Basilica of Santa Chiara** (Saint Clare) is a peaceful, radiant tribute to one of the most beloved figures in Christian history. Though often overshadowed by the grand Basilica of Saint Francis just a short walk away, Santa Chiara offers its own powerful spiritual presence and architectural beauty that moves visitors in quieter, more intimate ways. Built in the mid-13th century and dedicated to **Saint Clare of Assisi**, a close follower and spiritual companion of Saint Francis, the basilica serves as both a place of worship and a physical testament to her legacy. Clare was the founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, later known as the **Poor Clares**, and she lived a life of radical poverty, humility, and service. This same simplicity is echoed in the church’s design. The façade of the basilica is striking in its understated elegance. Composed of alternating bands of pale pink and white stone from Mount Subasio, it reflects the light in soft, ethereal tones—particularly at sunrise or sunset. A large rose window adorns the front, typical of Umbrian-Gothic architecture, and the entrance is humble, yet inviting. The bell tower, added later, completes the silhouette of the church against the sky. Upon entering the basilica, the **atmosphere shifts dramatically**. It’s quiet, dimly lit, and deeply contemplative. The simplicity of the interior draws the eye and the heart toward what matters most: prayer and reflection. Frescoes adorn the walls, including some attributed to early followers of Giotto. These delicate images tell the story of Saint Clare’s life and her profound faith, adding color and warmth without overwhelming the space. The true heart of the basilica lies beneath, in the **crypt where Saint Clare’s body rests**, displayed in a glass coffin. Pilgrims and visitors alike approach with reverence. Her incorrupt body, long preserved, serves as a reminder of the depth of her devotion. Surrounding her tomb are relics of both Saint Clare and Saint Francis, including tunics, haircloths, and personal effects that humanize these legendary figures and connect the visitor to their daily lives. Outside the basilica, the **piazza** offers a panoramic view of the Umbrian countryside, making it one of the most beautiful and tranquil spots in Assisi. Whether you're a pilgrim, a history enthusiast, or a casual traveler, sitting on the stone steps as the bells chime can be a moment of deep peace. The **Basilica of Santa Chiara** is not grand in a worldly sense, but its spiritual weight is undeniable. It embodies the Franciscan values of humility, beauty, and inner strength. In a town steeped in faith and history, this sacred space is both a monument to a powerful woman and a place where the soul can breathe. Visiting Santa Chiara is not just about seeing a church; it’s about feeling a presence—a gentle call to simplicity, compassion, and silent grace.

Absolutely beautiful basilica. The crypto of Saint Clare is special and worth spending a good amount of time. There's some beautiful artwork, cross, architecture. It can get busy at times though.

Basilica
Sights & Landmarks
The Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi is an iconic Gothic church and a major Christian pilgrimage site. This UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of the Upper Basilica and the Lower Basilica, adorned with medieval art. The basilica also features smaller chapels like those dedicated to St Mary Magdalene and St Louis of Toulouse. It's recommended to use an audio guide to explore the rich history behind this impressive structure.
Breathtaking views inside - out! Sublime architecture and a sheer joy to witness it all. No tickets required. The tomb of the Saint Francis can be easily viewed, although no photos are allowed to be taken inside the burial chamber. There’s a souvenir shop within the building, plenty of restaurants around the Basilica could be spotted too. Be careful which one you are going to as they aren’t Michelin star restaurants. If Gordon Ramsey gets there; he’ll definitely close the whole road where they are located, not just one. The Car park is massive, so don’t you worry about parking.
Mike T — Google review
So special to experience these beautiful churches - up and down! We got to enjoy an English mass at 9am on Sunday. Touring with Rick Steeves podcast in our ear was great (also the town walk is so good). Loved the museum in the back. The highlight of course was the crypt, to spend some time in the presence of St Francis. Well- we know his presence is with us in Christ, but so cool to see his tomb. The Giotto frescoes are amazing and the ceilings- wow, that blue- I love it.
Randy H — Google review
Lovely Medieval town - Assisi - famous for St Francis' Basilica, which we visited. Also had a lovely cappuccino but didn't stay for lunch. Escalators available to get you into the higher parts of town from all the car parks so no worries for older and less mobile visitors. A must-see if in Umbria

Today's highlight. You don't want to miss this place when in Assisi. Prepare for a walk uphill and downhill. Travel light but bring some coins or bills for the offering and candles. There's plenty of good restaurants and giftshop in the area. Walking distance to visit the tombs of St. Clare and Saint Carlo Acutis.🙏🙏🙏
Nellie B — Google review
What an amazing experience to be able to come on a pilgrimage here. The church is very beautiful and full of meaning. There is a tomb of St. Francis of Assisi under this church. There is also a museum, and a souvenir shop. Don’t forget when you enter, there is a prayer paper that we can take and write, so that later we can bring it to the tomb area of St. Francis, and we give to the brothers here to pray. Then don’t forget after shopping at the souvenir shop, bring it to the blessing section near the exit.
Andreas S — Google review
We visited here as part of a tour group, it has amazing art work throughout, its just a shame you can not take photos of your visit. It is a very large complex and will stun you by its size, it gets busy and has some stairways that are narrow.

Another beautiful and amazing church in Italy, the Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi. We can visit the tomb, the mortal remaining of St Francis of Assisi, which was preserved since 1230. Also, this church is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. there are two distinct churches: the Upper and Lower Basilicas. Visitors can explore intricate chapels adorned with remarkable artwork while learning about the rich history through audio guides.

A beautiful building with breathtaking murals inside. Photos are not permitted inside but it is well worth visiting. The murals are floor to ceiling and it's also a pleasant place to spend an hour out of the heat just admiring the works. ⛪

The Cathedral of San Rufino is a 13th-century church located in Assisi, Italy. It is divided into two main churches, the Lower and Upper basilicas. The interior features ornate friezes, statues, and numerous chapels such as those dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene and St. Louis of Toulouse. The cathedral has an unmistakable Romanesque character with modern features added during the 16th century.
Beautiful Cathedral. Very quiet and cool. It has glass floor panel where you can see down to the ancient Roman tunnels.

I already visited Assisi two times and I will do it again and again. It is a great town where you enjoy history, old places, cathedrals and saints... The Cathedral is well know and usually open for tourists. Make sure to spent at least 2 days in Assisi where you can enjoy food and wine as well.
Wadad L — Google review
May 2025. The cathedral is free to enter and worth visiting, but it also has a museum and tower that you can access for a fee. The museum has a guide / recommended path so you don't miss anything. The view from the tower is very nice, plus you are able to get close to the church bells.
Patrick V — Google review
The Cathedral of San Rufino is dedicated to Assisi’s first bishop and patron saint, Rufinus, whose remains are kept in the crypt beneath the church, which you can see for a small fee. The current Romanesque structure dates to the 12th century and is notable for its well-preserved facade with carved lions, symbols, and biblical scenes. The interior has been modified over the centuries, blending medieval and later Baroque elements. The cathedral is also historically significant as the site where St. Francis and St. Clare were both baptized.
D. M — Google review
The Cathedral of San Rufino is beautiful and steeped in history. It gets busy, especially since admission is free, but the visit is quick and absolutely worthwhile. Definitely worth a stop while exploring Assisi.

Lovely church, fabulous bell tower with views of Assisi. Experience where Francis and Clare were baptized. Some early Roman ruins under the church made visible. Great art as always!

Fabulous architecture and paintings. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take photos inside the cathedral, but it's right to respect the people and mass, therefor it's ok.

San Damiano is a 12th-century church and cloisters located in Assisi, surrounded by terraced olive groves. It holds great significance as the place where St. Francis received a message from God to rebuild his house. This sanctuary embodies the virtues and values of St. Francis, representing an important part of his life.
A serene place of refuge and reflection. Enjoyed a beautiful walk through olive groves to this old convent It is a well preserved piece of catholic religious life, and documents well the ministry of Saint Clare and Saint Francis, including his Canticle of .the creatures

Try and arrive while non rush hour. The walls and floors bear witness of the deepest dedication in love of God across centuries - the prayer in the small chapel was touching and gentle…

The experience is nice, not too touristic. The place “explains” itself with some boards throughout the tour. Nice experience for those seeking to know better the story of St Francesco. To be aware: the original cross of San Damiano, to which St Francesco / Francis prayed, is today in the Church of St. Clare in Assisi.
Adolpho M — Google review

Anton S — Google review
Oh my word. San Damiano is beautiful. It is the place, where in 1205 St Francis heard God speak through a beautiful cross. It has not changed much since that time apart from some repairs and improvements. It is a place of prayer and quiet reflection. It is definitely worth a visit to look round and pray.

Le Terrazze di Properzio is an old-world restaurant located on a hillside with a terrace that offers stunning views of the Umbrian countryside. Despite its rustic setting, it's conveniently close to the Basilica di San Francesco. The restaurant specializes in homemade pasta and desserts, offering local favorites such as sliced beef, rolled-up pork with herbs, slow-cooked wild boar stew, Umbrian pork with honey and bacon, and sweet and sour onions.
The excellent food was truly a delight to savor, with each bite bursting with flavor. The panoramic view of the valley provided a stunning backdrop for the entire dining experience. It was a pleasure to sit and enjoy the scenery while indulging in such culinary artistry. Every element of the meal was thoughtfully crafted to enhance the overall enjoyment. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this remarkable combination.

Had much today. Service was fast friendly and efficient. We sat on patio with view. We first dined here in 2017. We often bring gusts when touring Assisi. Food is excellent and the views amazing. Reservations required. Highly recommended.

Amazing view from the terrace. If you time it right, you can watch the sunset. Really friendly and super efficient service. Best to reserve but we were lucky with a walk in for two immediately as they opened at 7.15pm. Lovely food and an excellent bottle of Orvieto Classico for a very good price. One of the most enjoyable dinners I've had in a long time.

Very rude manager - at 14:45, I very politely asked if he spoke English and then asked if it's possible to order a coffee and he said, quote, "we're not a bar, we're a restaurant and we are closed." Sign posted outside says they're open until 15:30. He could have at least shared sorry, that's not possible as we're a restaurant. It's possible you'll receive service if you're white (I'm not). I visited years ago and was warmly welcomed and had an early afternoon coffee on the terrace, unsure if the manager was having a bad day or if it's the rise in hostility towards non-white people. Either way, I'd avoid. Update: my partner was there and heard the entire conversation, the manager's reply is not true. He was very rude and smirked and me, it was 14:45 (I have a Google Maps timeline to show we arrived at 14:42) and we would have been happy to order lunch if he shared that as an option but didn't even invite us to come back later, he definitely did not thank me and definitely did not suggest ordering food or lunch, he outright said we are not a bar and we are closed. He clearly did not want my business. This is the complete opposite of other businesses in Assisi that warmly welcomed us for coffee and dessert, and several that went out of their way to hand me a business card and invite me for dinner. I don't recommend eating at Le Terrazze di Properzio.
Priya C — Google review
I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Assisi. The food is delicious, the menu offers plenty of choice. Aside from the very extensive wine list they also have a few curious beer options. The staff is very friendly, polite and speak english very well. If this wasnt reason enough, the view from the terrace is astonishing. Make sure to be here at around 20.30 to watch the sunset while enjoying good food and drinks.
Vincent G — Google review
Perfect for a date! The raviolis were very tasty. I recommend making a reservation if you want the perfect view but even if you don’t have one the whole restaurant is beautiful.

This was a really great experience. The view is incredible and the food and wine were great. Make a reservation. Staff is competent and helpful but in a very Italian way, so (for my fellow Americans) don't expect the constant checking you might get in the US. Ask politely for what you want (seeing the wine list again, ordering another dish, etc or you'll be waiting a while.

Trattoria Pallotta in Assisi offers a taste of seasonal Umbrian cuisine in a charming, rustic setting. The Balducci family ensures consistent quality with classic dishes like stringhozzi alla Pallotta, zuppa di fagiolina, piccione alla ghiotta, and coniglio alla cacciatore. The simple yet cozy dining rooms feature stone-lined walls and arched frescoed ceilings, creating a warm atmosphere especially when the open fire is lit.
We were really lucky to get a walk in table, but really glad we did. Busy restaurant where the locals eat. Service was attentive considering how busy it was. Food was fantastic! We had the beef filled and potatoes, tagliatelle al rugu rosso and apple cake with custard dessert. Fresh - tasty - cooked with care!

I don’t usually give out 5 stars so easily but this restaurant definitely deserves it. Food was delicious and made with quality ingredients. We absolutely loved Trattoria Pallotta in Assisi. Even though we arrived late due to a delayed flight and it was close to their closing time, they still warmly welcomed us, took our orders, and served us without any hesitation. We had the rabbit and the sucking pig. This place is a 10/10. This is the kind of food you would want for your last meal on earth. Everything was amazing from the tender meat to the sauce. They truly know what they are doing. I don't have a picture of the pork because it was too good for my wife to wait for the photo opt.

Ristorante il Vicoletto is a trendy and cozy place located in the historic center of Assisi, offering a modern twist on Umbrian dishes. Tucked away in a small street, it provides an oasis of tranquility where guests can enjoy refined dishes made with simple and genuine ingredients.
We searched out this discrete little restaurant and are very glad we did. It's down a little lane and may look closed, but try the door. We had the Lamb with herbs on velvety potato and the Sea Bream on fava beans and salted ricotta with some excellent house wines. Both dishes were really tasty and better than they look in the photos. Go for the food, not the views.

They must change the chef. The food is well below our standards, which is not very high. I am not a food critic and I am not a picky eater. The first course is the Octopus which is good. We enjoy it very much. When the main courses came, it is disappointing one after the other one. The pawn is tasteless and textured is soft and 100% not fresh. The sea base is so overcooked that even a cardboard might be softer than it. The steak is the second worst. It is medium rare, so it should be cut easy. But no. It cannot be cut though, a big piece of tender was still attached with the meat. The meat is tasteless. The waiter ask how is the food and we told him the fish is way overcooked. He took it out from the bill. Thank you for doing it. He is the only waiter for 6 tables. He is very nice and food. He took care of everyone With ease. Even have time to have small talks with some table in Italian. The resturant has good atmosphere. We wish that the food is better

Tutto il mio era eccellente! Everything was excellent! We ordered several dishes and got to share everything from the pasta, to seafood, to meat, and then dessert of course. All the flavors were amazing. The staff (Fatima in particular) was welcoming and very helpful. I’d definitely come back when in Assisi again and recommend others to check it out. The building is from the 19th century so the Italian vibes were real 💝

Hidden Down a tiny alley one finds this gem… Il Vicoletto. The ambiance was welcoming and friendly. The home made bread so attractive and super tasty. A meal in top 3, we’ve had on our 43 day journey. Tagliata di vitello on a bed of the sweetest figs, a delicate Gorgonzola sauce and topped with shaved truffles. All paired with wines recommended by the owner. We savoured ever morsel and didn’t want the meal to finish .. it deserves 10 stars.

In our Italy tour, this was the most expensive and less tasty meal we had so far. Why reinvent something already good? Why cooking a carbonara like you do? The plates are not well served. The waiter stays inside and you need to wait long time to order anything. I don’t recommend it for a family.

Trattoria Degli Umbri is a vintage-style venue with stone walls and a vaulted ceiling, offering classic meat, pasta, and side dishes. Located in the heart of Assisi, it provides a no-frills dining experience with checked tablecloths and paper napkins. The restaurant is known for its delicious traditional Umbrian food, quick service, friendly staff, great location, and competitive prices.
Great little place in Assisi at the “top” of the hill from my hotel. About 250 straight up hill, but only 0.4 mile. Everything I expected from an authentic Italian eatery. I had the gnocchi bolognese which is my favorite everywhere I go. This version really stood out among the many I’ve tried all over!

Located in the heart of the Piazza. They have a friendly service. Food quality is good and ingredients are fresh. Prices are reasonable. The truffle product had a very mild taste and odor of truffle but food was good overall.

The setting is nice, with a central square atmosphere, but unfortunately it was on a slope which made everything slide on the table. The food itself was less than average in terms of taste, and the prices felt quite high for what we got

We popped in here to escape the crowds and heat and ate inside. We had the salad with chicken, the side salad, the torta al testo (bread sticks), and the potato leek soup. Everything was excellent! The soup had crumbled saffron breadcrumbs and I ate every bit! The salads had a nice mix of greens. Our waitress was fast and funny.

We were recommended to this restaurant by our host and it did not disappoint. It looks touristly but turned out to be very popular with locals. Everything was delicious but the lasagna with bacon, mushroom and truffle was something uniquely flavourful to us. Their ham was also very decent. Service was actually pretty fast compared to the average. Recommended to arrive early for lunch since the place was full after 1245.

Benedikto - Osteria is a lovely and stylish restaurant located in the best hotel in Assisi. The personnel is very nice, and the cuisine is regional but creatively made. Conscious of allergy issues, they have created an environment which is both delicious and gracious. Highly recommend visiting!
Where to start? The cheese and meat board was out of this world good! Andre was our waiter every time and was simply amazing. Always super friendly. We met the chef each evening when we went and sad to go but he was sooooo accommodating and kind and really a genius in the kitchen. It was a smaller venue perfect for.dat night. HUGE selection of wines ranging from 30 euros a bottle up to finer French wines for 900 euros so your experience is only dictated by your budget. We felt like we were treated like family. I cant say enough great things about the ambience and food and drink here.

Beautiful restaurant - very well arranged and has big windows with an excellent view towards the old town. The food is very good, we did the tasting menu with wine pairing. The major downside was the service. Empty glasses were left on the table for a while so at one point we had 6 wine glasses, 4 of which were empty, that was a consistent theme of the night. Explanation about the dishes was somewhat lacking. The amuse-bouche while tasty seemed underwhelming.

Elegant restaurant located in the best Hotel of Assisi. The personnel is very nice. The cuisine is regional, but creatively made.

Absolutely delicious and the most unbelievable view of the city. We had the 6 course tasting menu and it was perfection - special shout out to the risotto with sardines and the garlic pasta. Wow. Thank you to the amazing chef, and especially Vanessa who was brilliant. She made our visit extra special. Would recommend to anyone visiting Assisi for a special meal!

We have been coming here for several years and it was run by several different owners.. the present team is a treat to be served by, the food is excellent which I would describe as contemporary Italian.. the service was impeccable and we loved all aspects of the restaurant… we will be back soon … Glad it reopened…
