Local history museum
This museum offers a noted collection of European art, as well as natural history exhibits.
Slide 1 of 8
We visited this museum just because it was at midway on our long distance drive that day and was perfect spot to rest. It turned out to be one of the best museums we ever visited. It is not a big museum as the popular ones in the country. However it has a nice collection of things, the variety of which was quite a lot to facinate, but not too much as in the big museums to overwhelm. The natural history collection had many bird, mammal and skeleton samples. There is also a collection of skulls of other human species like neanderthals, etc. In addition, there is a nice minerals collection. The second floor was reserved for modern art exhibitions, but I cannot comment as we are not fond of modern art. Parking: there are two big underground parking just under the museum and under the square across the museum. Therefore, access by car is very easy. The price of parking was okay or as one would expect considering it was the most central location in the city. We bought the ticket when we arrive. There was not a queue, however it was a low season. Ticket can also be bought online. The price of the museum is 6 euro per person. Overall, it was a quite nice experience for 3 hours that we spent.
That was the best museum that I've ever seen. Fossils, ancient Egypt, Knight armours, various minerals and stones, amazing tiffany glass examples, stunning old jewelleries, ancient Rome miniatures and more... It was absolutely amazing. 3 floors took my 3 hours and I could've stay even more.
It is a huge museum having 7-8 sections ranging from science, arts to history. The hardwork of workers in preserving the biological samples is admirable. You can come with kids to give them a good insights into different subjects. It is fantastic museum.
Absolutely wonderful place. Everyone should be visit this museum when gone to Darmstadt.
Excellent natural history museum with interesting mineralogical and zoological collections in addition to a range of works of art from both the ancient and modern world. In my opinion the heart of the museum is in the collection of fossils from the nearby Messel site, as they are incredibly well prepared and presented.
A surprisingly fulfilling museum with interesting exhibits in all areas ranging from art and history to the natural world. Be sure to reserve a good three or more hours for this place if you want to get round everything, as it has a vast collection - especially of art. The Max Liebermann exhibition was on when I visited. This was one of the best parts and was a well put together exhibition with interesting pieces. Most of the descriptions of the pieces are in German but this didn't reduce any of the entertainment for me. One kind employee even had a nice chat with me about the permanent collection. Entry is cheap and discounted for students so I undoubtedly recommend a visit as I believe it's one of the most interesting places to visit in Darmstadt!
We came for the art deco section and especially the jewelry part. This is the best display of jewelry I have ever seen. And the rest of the museum is also excellent. Beautiful pieces and excellently displayed. A must see for everyone. Very helpful security, especially in the art deco section where we were pointed towards the available drawers with even more jewelry.
Very interesting exhibits in an amazing beautiful Museum Hause in the heart of Darmstadt town... Enough time is required for visiting every exhibit with no rush, at least 2 to 3 hours. A café is also here to sit and enjoy a pause in between or after the visiting... A good museum for adults with children ....

The Vivarium Zoo in Darmstadt is a nice place to spend a lovely day or even a cloudy day, esp with kids. They have quite a collection of different animals, including colourful birds all over the world, including flamingo birds. They also have many butterflies and all sorts of fishes.
This is a small zoo in Darmstadt, where suitable for a short visit of 2-3 hours. this zoo provide friendly space for children and family activities.
Went for couple hours and I was actually pleasantly with the diversity. Very good park and nice place to spend a day with kids. The internal restaurant is too expensive. Pretty cool activity to do in otherways mostly boring city.
It was very nice experience, not too many animals but at least the prices were reasonable and conveniently little people and walking.
This is a small Zoo but with heart and soul. The animals are treated good, there was enough food and space for each inhabitant. Some animals were lend out to other zoos so not all areas were filled. Entrance fee is really good compared to other zoos I have been to. The prices of the small cafe were too high (~4€ for fries) and it took way to long (~20 mins waiting time for fries...?), queueing excluded. The area is accessible with a wheelchair and the parking lots are close. Will be back for sure.
Not much to see cause not such a big zoo, but very nice and appealing for kids. Benches. Playgrounds. Clean. The crocodile hides and sleeps and not green.... Some listed animals missing. This was very nice for me and the kids.
The small animal park is a great day out with small children. We love the otters and the monkey house! Presently (October 2025) they are doing quite a bit of maintenance which means some of the enclosures are not available. Our family has had a membership since 2010 and highly recommend it.
It's lovely experience to see all those animal. There where a lot of young people looking after them. It was nice spend time and moment for learning about animal world.

I saw Hundertwasserhaus Waldspirale first time in 2003 and I was already mesmerised. I wish I could live there. We always take guests to see this amazing architecture. It is really worth it.
Unbelievable from the inside. An architectural masterpiece, you can actually feel the vibes when you're within it. A sight to behold and experience. Words won't do it justice!
The building is very interesting and has a charming vibe. Its unusual style is like it came from Alice in Wonderland.
It is a different vibe when you visit the place!
Who love architecture and design you definitely need to visit this complex in Darmstadt!! It’s very interesting
Great building to look at incase you are a fan of the hundertwasser style. Sadly can only have a look from outside and not able to get in or go to the garden, but then again it is an apartment complex, so quite happy there was a way to go in between the two buildings.
Its so beautiful, as If a drawing came alive. 😍 very artistic.
Worth seeing, but really nothing super special. Just a different building- clone of some in Wienna…

So cute, worth going there :)
One of the most beautiful orthodox churches in Germany! It is located at the proximity of the Hochzeitsturm - the major landmark of Darmstadt - and surrounded by an artificial lake/fountain and orchard. I could not visit the inside due to an ongoing mass, but I was satisfied with just admiring the rich and colorful exterior (the church went under major reconstruction just several years ago). Easily recognizable by its golden onion shaped domes, the church is more than 120 years old and was built for the Russian tsar Nicholas II. The park is located just meters away and is a great venue for afternoon stroll or even a picnic, the atmosphere here is calm and quiet. Visited in November 2022.
A church with unique architecture. We didn't go inside because there were some events taking place.
Very intimate atmosphere, imposing building. Staff friendly and helpful. Amazing colors.
Stunning church in the Matildenhohe. Must visit in Darmstadt
The architecture and the view from outside were amazing. We didn't have a chance to enter, it was closed.
Its a nice place for people living in Darmstadt for a walk in evenings or maybe to spend peaceful time with friends or family.
Very detailed. It's really nice there. They're on a renovation now, but I bet it'll be more beautiful when it's done

This place is very epic! Anything you can find is here! Sadly the McDonalds closed down after corona tho grrr; but like they have other great food places to make up for it!
Last time I visited Darmstad was 32 years ago. I still remembered the Luisen platz and couldn't wait for seeing the changes. It haven't changed so much and I still love the Darmstadt downtown scene. I will be back again soon.
The center of the city, where all converges, and Langer Ludwig in the middle. Is not always clean, and it is full of cables that ruin the views of the tower. Nice, that is full of places to eat all around.
The Best place Darmstadt. No matter where you live/travel in Darmstadt, you can not avoid visiting this place :). This is the city centre where all the best shops are located. There are also tons of restaurants offering various types of foods. The bus/trum connection is also very very good here, you can find public transportation to go almost anywhere in Darmstadt-Dieburg area.
I have been in this place at many different times in the day, and different days of the year and its probably the most iconic place in Darmstadt. To be honest there are a lot places in the city I don't find particular beautifull but this is not one of them. On Sundays is more relaxed as there are less people around and for those who like lots of movement there are a lot of people during the fests. When I am not coming here to do some shopping, l just like to enjoy a nice espresso and relax.
It is a square that is considered the center of the city of Darmstadt. It dec everything you are looking for, such as shopping malls, cafes, banks. All means of transport pass through this square. There is also a significant amount of vehicle traffic underneath.
This is the city center of Darmstadt. Tram and bus connectivity is very good from here. You can get airliner bus from here to Frankfurt. There are many shopping options in luisencenter which is near to this. Even restaurents, super markets, bakeries and apotheke are near by..during christmas time, this place is nivy decorated and small exhibition kind of stores are arranged here.
Writing in English because I believe only a tourist would look this up. This is what whe usually call “Middle” of the Darmstadt. Near the Ludwig’s Monument (which is seen in photos) there are many little shops and a Shopping Center aswell. You are close to the bank, a little Starbucks, many restaurants. Only problem with Luisenplatz is that some drunk people do drink there at night time.

Amazing conference centre. Been there for PyConDE 2025.
Attended an event here recently and found the place very modern and well equipped. Plenty of parking available too, which is a plus. They have preserved a part of the wall that surrounded the city in the 12th/13 century and it looks aesthetic. They have a lovely restaurant inside too which serves coffee, cakes, sandwiches etc
Great place for holding conferences and exhibitions. Difficult to navigate rooms which are named after different radioactive elements on 2nd and 3rd floor. Overall, great atmosphere to participate in different activities being arranged. Food was also great their in ECCE 2024 conference held in Darmstadium.
One of the best conference venues I've been to. The place has really good WiFi, great infrastructure for a tech conference and awesome architecture. It also has great infrastructure for organising sessions. There's good place to organise code sprints and lunches as well. The auditorium is big and can handle around 1000 people.
Very easy to Access by public Transport, building is great, good Restaurants Option nearby
Love it. Amazing architecture. Great building with plenty of space. Some of my fav events in the area take place there. Plenty of accommodation around. Whenever you get a chance to visit make sure to look at the old city walls which have been included into the building.
This city has modern architectures mix with the old. I just loves this city.
Great architecture and several statues around as well as an old sandstone gatehouse for contrast. Some stylish and comfortable benches to rest under trees in the shade. Didn't attend anything inside, but outside looks cool

Absolutely wonderful! The tour was just delightful. This palace is where the queens of Europe grew up from England to Russia this was the ideal place to find a royal bride. If I could work in this palace as a tour guide, I would. I'm entirely enchanted with its rich history.
We came with the daughters to see some princessess stuff, at the end we found out the you get in only with a group once an hour and there is not much to see, only hear. And the daughters dont know nor german nor english. So this was a big diasapointment
Very good guided tour of the Hessen Darmstadt Royal family history. I had a great guide - Matthias, who speaks fluent English and is very passionate about his subject matter. No photos are allowed inside and 5 Euro per person. A must visit in Darmstadt.
Walk through history of royalties of Darmstadt, Hessen primarily through portraits, their connection with England, Russia, Bayern, Hamburg etc. and some interesting articles e.g. medals, musical clock etc. Overall not so many different type of exhibits but very good guided tour. Worth it!!
Interesting visit. The guide was really good, doing the whole tour in German and English, taking the tike to share with us non-German speakers a lot of interesting facts about the castle and the family.
We really enjoyed our visit to this museum. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful, particularly the female member of staff who gave us the tour in english. There was a lot to see in the museum and was definitely worth the entrance fee. But you do have to go as part of a tour and this may not always be in english. A visit is recommended.
Loved it!!! Anyone who visits Darmstadt and wants to learn some history should visit this place. Interesting stories, well organized exhibits and the tour guide is awsome. Would give 10 stars if I could.
They have a lot of interesting things to see. Though the staff following us everywhere was very annoying and distracting, there is always an uncomfortable feeling of someone looking at you with constant suspicion.

Fantastic experience! I wanted to show my parents what a real European football match feels like, and this stadium was the perfect choice. The fans were incredibly energetic—jumping, drinking, and waving massive club flags. My parents absolutely loved the atmosphere!
Great stadium for a fußball match. Nice seats. Good fans. Fans for Dortmund and for Bochum were very loud and passionate. Good game. Dortmund won 4-1
The home of SV Darmstadt 98. Very good public transport service. You can take trams 9 and 2. Not so far from the main city. In the stadium food shops take cards and cash both.
A ground with plenty of character, even with the new temporary stands in place of the old terraces behind each goal. As someone has said previously, the entrance to the ground is small for the number of visitors but it didn’t seem a problem for a sold out game (vs. Kaiserslautern in Bundesliga 2). Plenty of food and drink outlets, some (but not enough) porta-toilets, and friendly staff.
Fantastic atmosphere, really good vibes friendly home supporters, was at the standing section which is the old part, which will eventually be converted. Richtig gute Stimmung that's my German
Wonderful stadium. If you want to see some quality football in Darmstadt, this is the place youn would want to be. Easy to reach and very well connected. The snacks counters and the Fan shop complete this package. I would recommend this place to take friends, family and young football enthusiasts to.
Good and big stadium but most stalls offer non veg foods , very limited veg options+ the woods nearby are wonderful for a short walk....easy to travel to this location using tram number 9.
At 33C water was warm and 3.50€ and 3 bartenders for 500 fans! Very little shade! Parking spot for away fans is 5€ and a 1km walk to the stadium. Not impressed. Good atmosphere if the decisions go there way.

We visited Prinz-Emil-Garten yesterday, and it was such a peaceful and refreshing experience! The garden is beautifully maintained with colorful flowers, quiet walking paths, and a calm, family-friendly atmosphere. It was a perfect spot to stroll with our 3-month-old baby. The charming pond, blooming plants, and lovely open spaces make it ideal for families, couples, or anyone looking to relax in nature. A hidden gem in Darmstadt! Highly recommended.
A nice garden very close to the city center. It is nicely landscaped, has many play areas for children, a small pond with a pavilion and a Schloss. Ideal for picnics/walk/cycling.
Prinz-Emil-Garten is a public park in Darmstadt that offers a quiet and accessible green space for visitors. The park is reasonably maintained, with walking paths, grassy areas, and scattered benches that provide places to rest or enjoy the surroundings. The layout is simple and straightforward, making it easy for visitors to navigate, whether on foot or with bicycles or strollers. The greenery and landscaping are pleasant, with a mix of trees, shrubs, and open lawns. While the park does not feature any particularly unique architectural elements or large-scale attractions, it offers a straightforward environment for casual recreation, such as walking, sitting, or spending time outdoors. Seasonal changes bring some variety to the scenery, though the park remains largely standard in appearance throughout the year. Facilities such as trash bins, seating areas, and access points are functional, though amenities like restrooms or cafés are limited or not present within the park itself. The park is generally accessible and safe, attracting a mix of local visitors, families, and occasional tourists. While organized events or activities are not a frequent feature, the open space allows for informal gatherings or personal leisure. Overall, Prinz-Emil-Garten provides a solid, if unremarkable, green space in Darmstadt. It is suitable for a short walk, relaxation, or a casual outdoor break. While it does not offer particularly distinctive attractions or features, it serves its purpose as a public park effectively, offering a calm and neutral environment for everyday outdoor use.
Nice Park with Spielplatz /play areas for kids.Tram 8 goes there from hauptbahnhof ,which hardly takes 8 -10 mints .Nice for outdoor picnics also. There is basket ball court, one big play area ,small play area, separate zip line, table tennis.
I loved it, beautiful scenery. Great places and peace.
Nice and serene park middle of the city. Good playground for children
Nice park with a little lake in the middle with ducks. Has an old building and some playgrounds for kids as well. Not very touristic but a good enough place for a picnic. Not very crowded.

Beautiful park and well maintained. I really enjoy walking around here and seeing different building and statue
Absolutely a must see in June! The rose garden is beautiful, and there is so much to see. We had to break it up into two trips. It's hard to believe this place is free to visit at any time.
Because of the historical elements, this park serves as more than just a green space for relaxation and leisure. It is also a historical site and has many places of interest for history lovers. Beautifully manicured gardens, rose dome, plenty to benches along the pathways, and so many historical structures. Overall a wonderful experience.
Went for a walk here. It was lovely. Quiet, spacious, and easy to get around. Not many flowers yet, but that didn't matter. Still a beautiful place to be. I'll go back when more is blooming. It feels like the kind of place that's worth seeing in different seasons.
Its a very beautiful place to visit for nature lovers.Planty varieties of flowers are bloomed. When we visited roses are not bloomed yet.The rosarium with rose dome is a must visit. Good place to visit with family or friends for relaxation. Benches are available along the pathways. Dogs are also allowed. Apart from greenary, trees, there are some interesting historical structures like mausoleums, tea house, spanish tower and lion entrance gate are worth a visit.
The park is beautiful in all the months throughout the year. Every month different flowers bloom and make it a wonderful place to visit.
it would say that they really tried besides the lovely rose garden the sphere is really very interesting inside it is so suitable for wedding ceremonies and concerts and photos Really Great place you must visit the park is huge very nice very quiet it was not populated very much there was space even for meditation, an extremely pleasant place

Excellent place to go out with the family and friends. There is a small coffee shop, the cakes are delicious. As well there is supermarket where you can buy local and bio products. Is a really nice farm.
I love this place. You can get wonderful fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products from ecological agriculture, plus it's such a more relaxed atmosphere for shopping. I try to do as much if my shopping here as I can. A lot of the products are local and the small size means you can find what you really need without losing your sanity. Considering the quality, the price is very good, and you can stop by the cafe right afterwards.
Love this market! Delicious milk and scrumptious cakes.
A wonderful selection of meats and cheeses on the delivery counter. Lovely fresh bread and cute coffee and cake shop. All organic and ethically sourced.
Good selection of organic food. Highest food standards.
Small selection. Be prepared for a longer line at the check out.

Fantastic place to go on a day with good weather. You can see the whole town and even see Frankfurt from afar. I especially enjoyed watching the airplanes start and land at Frankfurt Airport. There is an option to take the elevator instead of the stairs. If you just come for the view, take the elevator. Otherwise there are some interesting rooms to check out on the way up or down.
Very interesting building with few fascinating murals. Three floors are open to visit, with the top one offering panoramic views. There is a closed info center, and very modest ticket counter on the ground floor, I just had a feeling there was no much info shared about the area.
I didn’t know about this when I entered first. Lady in reception was super I’m educating about the place etc. 4 Euro per person to see 4 floors. It was cloudy, however enjoyed the view. It will not blow your mind away, however it was to view the landscape, autumn colours etc
The wedding tower is really beautifull, bizarre in its shape, all floors have a charm.
It is a good place to be at. You can see the aerial view of Darmstadt, church, garden and Rhine valley. In wedding tower, you can visit only 2 rooms. Museum is not that great. Rest is very good. Church is majestic. The connectivity from luizenplatz is good. One can go by bus.
Cute the area from outside, but not worth going inside
Was really surprised on finding the tower and the connection to Art Nouvea movement which is evident in thew architecture and in the museum which I enjoyed visiting.Surviving examples of Jugenstil are apparant to be admired. The Wedding tower and Russian Chapel with its intersting historical connections are part of what is now a World Heritage site and should not be missed. Mary Shelley visited the Real Frankensteins castle nearby too if castles are your forte.Quite impressed as did not expect the town to have such a deep and varied history even connecting Queen Victoria.
The "wedding" tower is an important city's landmark, unfortunately not an impressive one. Frankly speaking I wanted to visit this place because it is an UNESCO heritage site, however I was rather disappointed. The tower itself, built in art nouveau style is beautiful - the red brick façade is amazingly contrasting with the unique roof arches made out of copper - but there is nothing much to see inside. The observatory deck is located on the 7th floor (accessible by stairs or elevator) and offers unimpressive views of Darmstadt - unimpressive because the city lacks a skyline  and there is no focal point. The decorated rooms (usually used for weddings) are blocked by glass doors therefore not fully accessible. To be honest, the most interesting part of the tower's interior for me is the lobby and its two major mosaic decorations, if you just visit this, you don't even have to pay (otherwise the entrance fee is 3 EUR). The surrounding of the tower is peaceful and nice. During Christmas time, we were able to grab a hot mulled wine in a nearby kiosk and stroll around the orchard and the orthodox church. Definitely not the most spectacular building, but if you are in the area, it's still nice to visit. Toilets available on the 6th floor. Paid by card. Visited in November 2022.

First of all, this is not just a museum, it's a working train station/shunting yard. That is the reason it is only open on Sunday. Also, that is the reason you can only enter with a guide. I've heard that on Saturday, older gentlemen and a few younger guys work on the locomotives out of hobby. The tour guide was very passionate about this sector of the transportation industry. He explained in German, but at the end took his time to talk to me, explain many interesting parts of the railway infrastructure control systems and not just.
I was pleasently surprised by this museum. Run by volunteers, I was taken on a tour of the train yard and they even had a steam locomotive that was cut into half that was used to explain how the trains worked. I definetely want to go back on one of the event days where they show off the trains in motion.
Epic Place! You can also eat inside. You can ride some trains, one to Darmstadt. Free connection via bus to the tram Museum
What an excellent experience. As it was a Sunday, we had a personal guide who did the tour in English. He was very passionate and extremely knowledgeable. I love trains and collect model trains, almost exclusively German. Seeing the old steam locomotives and other rolling stock was a truly magical experience. A definite recognition!
Fantastic museum. Tours in English available. We absolutely loved it and had a great time hanging out inside and on premises. I thought I knew a thing or two about trains but the tour guide definitely took me to a different level. Greatly appreciate the people making it possible!
Some interesting locomotives, however you can only go round with a tour guide, who only speaks German and shouts at you when you wonder away from the group, usually to see something you're interested in! Realistically mostly rusting rolling stock, I'm sure a good cause but not seeing the bigger picture. Nothing in English, so it has to be 2/5.
A great train museum if you are into historic rail. This is situated on an active line so it is quite usual to see freight rail pass by. I had an especially pleasant experience with one of the volunteers giving me a tour in English.
Very good place and nice people. You can see interesting German Steam locomotives and other type of trains.

Great Museum! It is not very big but definitely worth a visit. The people who are running the museum are very lovely and have great knowledge about the history of the area and everything related to geology and the oil industry. They have a good brochure, great models and a video (available in different languages) to explain the history, different drilling methods etc. but the best and most interesting part where the explanations they gave us. We really enjoyed our visit and can only recommend to go to this place if you are in the area.
Nice but really small museum, price is in my opinion too high and informations are only in french. The owners are really nice people!

The museum organized the visit before our arrival with extraordinary care. We had a tailor-made visit, entirely adapted to our configuration, with many tactile experiences in particular and specialized materials. I simply want to thank the museum managers for this 5-star visit to this magnificent museum. (Translated by Google) A truly interesting museum, small but comprehensive. Photos, reports, and artifacts about oil drilling in Alsace, not to mention two models that the very friendly young man at the reception desk operates to show you the drilling process. It's definitely worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) A small museum that vividly and fascinatingly depicts the origins of the global oil industry. The displays of oil production in front of the museum are also highly recommended. Highly recommended. The guide (Daniel) is incredibly knowledgeable and has an answer to every question. I'd be happy to go again. An interesting destination for children too. Auch die Darstellungen der Erdölförderung vor den Museum sind sehr zu empfehlen. Absolut empfehlenswert. Der Guide (Daniel) hat ein unglaubliches Fachwissen und auf jede Frage eine Antwort. Gerne wieder. Auch für Kinder ein interessantes Ziel.

The entry is free, and while there are not many seats for resting, the environment is great for walking and relaxing in an authentic garden.
Beautiful garden connected to the Herrngarten. The well manicured lawns with blooming flowers is a treat for the eyes. It has two main buildings - Das Prinz-Georg-Palais which houses the porcelein museum and Das Prettlack'sche Gartenhaus which houses a small library with a reading hall from where one can borrow books free of cost to read in the park or at home. Both are worth a visit. This garden, just like Herrngarten also has a history attached to it. There are regular programs (like guided tours) that happen in the garden, details of which can be found in their website. A sale of vegetables and other plants grown in the garden happens in the summer months. Overall, a beautiful green space in the heart of the city.
It's a place where you can take a deep breath, relax and enjoy the calming effects of flowers. It reminds me of the beautiful quote, "If we could see the miracle of single flower clearly our whole life would change".
Prince George Garden is a little gem, sits next to Technical University. Named after Prince George William of Hesse (1722-82), it's well manicured and maintained, laid out geometrically typical of its time. However, the porcelain collection is not open.
Beautiful gardens to have a relaxing walk or to sit and enjoy a sunny day! Very easy to arrive and close to other major attractions. Worth visiting.

As I remember from the recent past, 1 of the 5 UNESCO gardens worldwide. Simply amazing period character.
Such a beautiful gem in the heart of Darmstadt. It's like stepping into a fairytale land
