This temple is anciant, nice colorful painting and large. You need 1 to 2 hours for dharshan. Pond is very nice, you can sit and relax.
Temple is good but requires lot of maintenance. Temple premises need to be cleaned. Visited temple during night no lights on gopura.
Visited last week pure divine 🙏🏻. This temple is Renovated recently. Pond is well Maintained which is so neat and clean. One of the oldest temple. We can have the mandabam for Ear piercing, marriages and other functions. Need to park the car in the NH road.
Great architecture with a wide halls of paintings and enlarged entrance that gives a amazing feel on entry… the god here is Lord Siva with a holistic view. Entire peace of mind from entrance to exit… really amazing.. must visit..
After a long time, temple pond is open. Sprinkle the water on your head first before dipping your legs & be careful it's full of mosses. Main shrine Ambal & Vaitheeshwaran shiva lingam is in pitch dark & Ankgarakan is bright with focus light which is not appreciable though other shrines in pitch dark is also not acceptable. They should lit enough lamps inside the shrine to make it bright, only then elderly people can see at least what's inside. Temple is clean & tidy, recently renovated (Kumbashishekam in April 2021) & painted with beautiful colours on the temple tower & on the walls. Purchase & offer some Salt & pepper in place which you'll find opposite to Ambal shrine, have them as prasatham which cures digestion problem which is the root cause for most of the serious illness. Bad thing is that temple has lot of small shops inside & the prices are not reasonable & they're not much impressive either. -Review posted on 4/6/2022 & edited on 11/6/2022
Very traditional temple. It is important to learn the history and praying procedure before visiting. There is a medicine available to buy that is created from holy water and other ingredients. So called Vaitheeswaran temple (medicine/doctor meaning).
A beautiful temple with wonderful vibrations. The temple complex is enormous. The temple main deity is Vaitheeswaran:: Shiva the healer. People come here to pray to swamy to heal them of their diseases. The tank inside the temple is gorgeous.
Main god - Lord Shiva (vaitheeswaran), Thaiyal Naayagi, Sevvaai (Mars - one of the anugraahas), Selvakumaraswamy. Lord Shiva in the form of healing god. The pond is sacred. 5km from Sirkazhi 30km from Chidambaram (45 minutes travel by bus) If you want to reach this place by train from Chennai, Cholan express is the only train which stops here.

A bustling port city, vibrant with trade and culture, swallowed by the sea. That's Puhar, a lost Tamil city near modern Poompuhar. What you see today: * Submerged ruins: Dive beneath the waves and glimpse the remnants of this ancient civilization. * Archaeological finds: Unearthed artifacts whisper tales of a prosperous past. * Manimekhalai: A Tamil poem that vividly describes the city's tragic fate.
Atmosphere is very pleasant and you can enjoy the beach and beach only without any disturbance. Not very crowded and there are not lot of shops. Beautiful spot for beach lovers to enjoy sea waves and it's sound. Beach is clean but as it is ancient period beach, it can be made more appealing and more steps can be taken to preserve it.
I recently visited Poompuhar Beach and found it to be a clean and peaceful spot. The beach has a few walk paths thoughtfully laid out into the sea, allowing you to enjoy a closer experience with the water. There aren’t many attractions or activities in the surrounding area. I hope the local authorities take steps to develop this location further and make it more appealing to tourists. With its natural beauty and historical significance, Poompuhar has great potential to become a popular destination.
Poompuhar is historically and geographically significant. This was a thriving city in the era of early Cholas and it is the place where the great Cauvery river meets the sea. Eager to visit the place for these two reasons, we were very disappointed when we actually went there. True, there are quite a few places of interest close the beach (which is itself an attraction), but all of these seem to be frozen in the 1970's. There is an art gallery, stage for performing arts and a children's park, but they have not been updated or upgraded in ages. The beach itself is quite good, but there were quite a few unsavory elements when we visited in late October 2025. For a place of such immense repute in Tamil literature, this is in a pitiable state today.
They're doing a big renovation. Hopefully, we'll see the new Poompuhar beach in a year. If you want to swim and play on the beach, go near Kavari Temple. It's rock-free and great for swimming. The beach is super clean and nice, perfect for families and friends.
Soothing place , unlike beaches in chennai this one is comparatively less crowded. Less shops for eateries. Government construction of art gallery on silapathikaram is going on. Kannagi statue has been established near the shore. The beach is super clean. Expected to attract more tourists in the near future. If you are on a religious trip to this region, include it in your itinerary. Kids would enjoy a lot.
Construction work is going on. So might feel little discomfort road to reach beach. Still need to be improved
The place has all the vibes to be the best beach with an art gallery, library, variety of shops and peaceful beach experience. But it lacks maintenance, tourists should be mindful of how they litter. Best time to visit is 5pm to 7pm. Very relaxing and not so much crowd.

Don't not miss this place, its south tip of Tamil nadu and India. Reach this place at 8, early start is the best to spot a lot of deer's and to enjoy the scenery. The safari required min of 5 people, if less you need to bare the expenses of other seats. 200 per person. you can see chola lighthouse and old light house built by British. A pleasant safari every seen and loved it a lot.
Reached Pt. Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a desolate place. Please go there with your own car or taxi. Otherwise you will not be allowed inside. Only the Sanctuary officers two-wheelers are allowed inside. The entry fee is ₹200 for Indians and ₹2000 for foreigners. The Wildlife Sanctuary is full of black bucks. One of the few places in the world where they are found. The males have horns. The females don't have. You can also see wild boars, wild horses and a lot of monkeys. Try to reach early morning or after 3pm or 4pm.
This is the second time I visited the sanctuary after nearly forty years. The sanctuary has become more organised and well maintained. Although not many winter visiting migratory avian species have arrived at the outset of winter, we observed flock of wading and shore bird species. Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary, also known as Kodikkarai, is a protected area in Tamil Nadu, India, managed by the state's Forest Department. Established in 1967, it is a significant Ramsar site known for its large populations of migratory water birds, particularly flamingos, and for being a crucial habitat for the largest population of blackbucks in South India. The sanctuary's diverse landscape includes wetlands, mangroves, and sand dunes, and it features historical sites like the Chola and British lighthouses, as well as the religious spot Ramar Padham.
One star less because there is no info on visiting the bird sanctuary trail at 7:30 Am or at 17:00. Wildlife sanctuary was great be prepared for a slow bumpy ride.
phone number is wrong, the district forest warden number goes unanswered, the timing shown in google is wrong. It opens only by 9-9:30am, so kindly do not go by the google maps timing or the displayed board photo. The bus is not working and only cars are allowed to get in, two wheeler guys (all kinds, off road, big bikes) are not allowed (earlier they use to allow but now they don't). Also walking is restricted.
Self drive on a very poor road for almost an hour. Lot of horses, monkeys and deers. Beautiful view of the beach and remains of Chola period lighthouse.
Such a great place, but very shabby maintenance. The road leading to this Sanctuary is half covered with brambles and thorny plants, leaving a scratch in your car. Although lots of people are waiting, there’s no proper ticketing system. If this place were in Kerala, they would have ensured that online ticketing is there, toilets are there, and tourists have a good experience. A great revenue generator for the district is now in total ruins. Complete failure of the local administration. Things to be done – 1. Make ticketing transparent. Have online ticketing. Now I am told that we need to get permission from District Forest Officer, Nagapattinam. But no contact number or details are given to tourists. 2. Give permission for cars to enter. Now, it’s a long wait for that one govt vehicle to return after their safari inside. Else, increase the number of govt safari vehicles inside. 3. The thorns that have occupied one-third of the streets on either side should be removed by govt authorities. In some places, there’s no proper sign post to lead us to this important landmark. No one seems to be bothered. 4. Improve the facilities in the premises. Have at least a tea-stall and a canteen, with supplies of mineral water, and food. The entire area doesn’t have even one single shop. 5. Make sure all tourists are given respect and properly treated. Now there is no space to even seat them in the office. It is a very small office. I hope this reaches the ears of the authorities and this important tourist destination gets better.
Earlier we can proceed with our vehicle and now you only can go in the forest dept vehicle (that's what the ticket issuer said but we saw a private vehicle coming from the reserve area but our vehicles were not allowed) for which they charge 200 per adult and 50 per child. The charge seems high and the vehicle they have only one vehicle for which u have to wait more than an hour to return from the previous trip.

Ziegenbalg house was full of historical artifacts . Though most of the artifacts are captured by the British and they have it in their museum. The place is full of history . He was the first Protestant missionary to come to India . He contributed a lot in the translation of the Bible into tamil and involved in Tamil dictionaries and tamil manuscripts.
Ziegenbalg ( 1682 - 1719 ) was a multifaceted towering personality who has left a deep mark in the history of the region. The printing press is undoubtedly the best and most enduring legacy he left in India .( The Press is the poster for his bungalow) It is wonderful that his house is being maintained as an excellent museum and memorial to him . A must visit for all history enthusiasts.
Had an amazing experience… privileged to have visited this important historical place… a must visit for every Christian
the Danish-Halle Mission in Tranquebar (founded in 1706) and which is still alive today. The encounters between the Halle missionaries and Tamil society in South India created a common heritage, which, in addition to some architectural testimonies in South India, has been handed down through extensive written and also figurative sources.
A place with a lot of historical evidence and some great preservation of the first print machine which was invested to print the holy Bible. People with interest on history would definately like that. They cost some where around ₹100 for 10 people group. But if it's an individual, it costs ₹20 per head. They have some great people who are really eager to explain and demonstrate how the old print machine works. They have some collection of dress and books in the 1st floor. Overall it might excite someone who are inclined to history.
