When I last visited the castle, there was no museum. It was a pleasant surprise for me to find a museum. As I understood, it was established in 2019. It is an amazing place for history lovers: valuable findings, interesting exhibitions and an exit to the top of the castle. All this made me want to spend more time in the castle than I had planned. The cherry on the cake was a walk on top of the castle with an amazing view. I definitely recommend to visit the Haapsalu castle and its museum. Just choose the appropriate weather 😉 It is worth walking outside too; the castle is huge. There is cafe and the wardrobe. At the entrance I found a souvenier shop.
This is a large castle ruin still with an extensive exterior wall, an intact tower, and a repaired cathedral which is a very large single nave cathedral. We hadn't intended to visit thinking it was closed, but once inside saw it was open and decided to visit. The castle grounds were free but the tower and cathedral are in a paid museum. The exhibits were fairly simple but hands on and you can test various swords and Armour. My wife and I loved this museum and castle. The cathedral is quite impressive and has a great story inside. A must see in Haapsalu which is a charming little resort town and also worth a visit. This is a top marks from me. Great for kids also. With information simple, effective, and easy to understand. Excellent views over the town and coast from the wall next to the tower.
Great experience visiting the Haapsalu medieval Castle. The restoration is truly remarkable and the necessary modifications for the rehabilitation of a museum inside the castle are superbly arranged. The only black spot are the glass panels with the legends written in white letters, a rather unfortunate choice which makes reading extremely difficult ! George Misoulis, architect restorator of heritage buildings.
A really nice castle to visit with great views over the city of Haapsalu. My only criticism would be that a lot of the information boards are difficult to read due to the style which has been used throughout the museum.
Partially preserved medieval bishop's castles ruins with a museum inside and a cathedral connected to the castlw. Definitely worth visiting. Nice views from the castle walls. The castle yard is open without entry fee.
Great place to visit. Very well done renovation. Would go again definitely.
This Castel is pretty cool! They are on the right track to be sure. You can see it's a work on progress, and so are all museums and historical buildings. Much effort went into curating what is there. The displays are terrific! There are so many great written descriptions of what you're looking at, but they are very hard to read because they are on thick see through glass. The words are in different languages, (awesome!) but they are very hard to read because they are written in white letters and back lit with white light. I got a little dizzy reading all of it having to move around to focus on seeing the letters and words on the glass. I think possibly experimenting with different back loght might solve this. Othe areas on the grounds need to be updated and fixed. There were stairs in disrepair that went up a stone tower overlook. There was a wooden step that was actually broken. Kinda sketchy. Hopefully they can continue to make repairs and updates and get some investors to see the value of this special pleace and invest.
Was impressed with the quality, ingenuity and planning that went into making this an historical museum that you will want to visit. It is reasonably priced and filled with historical references without overdoing it. Upon entry there is a starting point that lets you go at your own pace. The route is clearly marked with several options to stop and play/interact with items in the environment and to take fun photos. There is also an opportunity to explore the courtyard by climbing the structural stairs that have been added as well as the completely restored attached cathedral. I traveled solo from Tallinn, then walked to get here and was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and highly recommend it to others.

Great experience. Interesting exhibition on phones and radios as well as the railway station and trains. Well presented information and friendly staff including the young man on the counter who went above and beyond in his helpfulness.
This is a free to view collection of old trains which was very impressive. There are information boards (in English) on each of the locomotives telling to story behind each train. Would definitely recommend to anyone with an interest in trains!
The communication museum contains an eclectic collection of phones, radios, gramophones and TVs from different eras. The railway museum exhibits photographs and miscellaneous railway paraphernalia. Outside, on the rails of the former train station, there’s a collection of older locomotives and wagons. Sadly, most of them are in a pretty deplorable state (very rusty, partly disintegrated and some vandalised). The entry is 5€ for both museums; the outdoor area as well as the platform and parts of the building can be accessed for free. Be aware that most description texts are only in Estonian.
Very interesting museum! I was welcomed today by a very friendly lady, and had a very nice talk with her, even with my bad estonian.. Great if you're into trains. Some very decent locomotives, but actually the wooden train station itself is a piece of beautiful architecture. The trains look especially beautiful in the evening/sunset light. Pity that they are not covered and therefore are exposed to rain. Would say one of the highlights of Haapsalu.
Interesting place to visit it with your family, to show your kids some old artifacts and explain how it worked in our childhood. It is not expansive, so come and spend some time here.
Not for me ,no english translation.the museum is two tiny closet rooms basically and 6 euros per person. The trains are outside and free to view. Not worth a visit for a foreigner. Cannot enter trains either so what's the point even. Total disappointment and depression.

How unexpected was I to find this treasure of Ilon’s Wonderland. Celebrating 50 years of her career. Such a legend! All her wonderful illustrations in the children’s books. Both inside and outside the wonderland there is magic at every corner. There are no right or wrong answers in the quiz hunt and you will be surprised by what is behind closed doors, just turn the key!
Lovely place for kids of different ages. There is enough to do and to look at for both small and big ones. And even for grown ups. Not sure if kids today are raised with Lindgren and Wikland, but i was. And plan to do the same for my kids. Activities for both indoors and outdoors. And occasionally there is a cafe. Not every day though.
Very Interesting Museum for adults and children. The life story of the artist is fascinating and the art work excellent. A great way to spend an afternoon.
Cozy and beutiful place. A lot to see, activitues in the yard and big playroom at top floor. Only sad thing is that toys and attractions look tired and many are broken. It is going downhill compared with 7 years ago.
It is a house dedicated to painter Iloni and thus it has an exhibition of her works. Last floor is a cute playroom.
Lovely place for kids to spend a 1/2 day or more.
Nice museum for the whole family
One of the few places I have seen that have facilitators in kids workshop areas that actually are engaged and very helpful. My kids were so enthusiastic about both of the workshops, it was a wonderful experience! Thank you

This lovely Swedish Estonian Museum could either break your heart or fill your soul with joy. Either way you must visit in the afternoon and if you have time to help the wonderful Haapsalu ladies who have been working since April 2022 making camouflage nets for the Ukraine’s defence force! The day I arrived they were making their 170th camouflage net & they kindly allowed me to join in. Bless these amazing women and bless Ukraine 🙏💙💛 The museum itself is just lovely it tells of the history for the Swedish Estonians. In every wall all the way around one room is a tapestry of the history, it is excellent! The lady that runs the museum is extremely friendly, helpful & knowledgeable.
The smaller the museum is, the more interesting it is. This small museum is huge in so many ways. It has a soul. First of all, it is located in a picturesque place; right next to the sea. This museum is about real people and their lifes; this is what made it so attractive for me. Inside there is a cozy homey atmosphere; I lost a track of time and felt like I was invited to someone's house. The staff are super friendly. The entrance fee is 5EUR but you get way more than you expect. There is a coffee machine and ice cream and of course some souveniers. It is definitely worth visiting. Before you leave, walk around the museum because the views from the shore are amazing. It is easy to get there from the centre: on foot ca 20 min but there is also a bus.
Beautiful place! The woman who received us was very kind and helpful. There are some handcrafted pieces you can buy there, drink a coffee and enjoy the back yard.
This is a tiny museum dedicated to the history of swedish people in the surrounding territories. The museum consists of a two store house and a garden with several buildings - a storage and fish smoking hut - and a small piers with several fishing boats. Inside the house, there are several rooms with expositions and touristic handmade souvenirs for sale. With respect to expositions, the information presented is quite scarce, mostly text to read, similarly the items presented are very few and not particularly interesting. You can rush through the place within 20 minutes, nothing catches your attention much. The information is rather general, no stories about particular people living here, no catchy facts, no personal items, no examples of Swedish texts/speaking of that time, no interesting statistics, etc. The garden is pretty simple, a couple of apple trees, some historic pictures on the walls (which were actually quite interesting because some of them depicted real people living in the area). The storage and smoking hut were rather empty and not interactive. Would be cool to try some fish. The boats looked also somewhat abandoned, some were filled with water. My favourite part was practicing knitting knots n the garden, but the activity was quite short, I wish there were more of that. I feel that this museum has a great potential but lacks interesting information and interactivity. For now I would not come back here again.
Brilliant little museum on an important part of Estonian and Swedish history. The staff and volunteers are lovely and very friendly, I was surprised and amazed to find a team of local volunteers producing camouflage netting for Ukraine in one of the rooms, and they let me add some netting of my own. Highly recommend! Tack så mycket :)
super excelent and informative Museum , about the Sweedes 1000 of years history in living and evolving in all the western Estonia Islands
A small but really impressive museum about the Swedish culture and swedish speakers in Estonia. Definitely worth a visit.
Very interesting and friendly place, multicultural. It happened to be 31st anniversary day with exhibition opening and violin music, and coffee! Tusen tack<3 Ella& Harri from Helsingfors.

A place which tells about the history of Haapsalu lace. There is a shop which sells lace fabrics made by local artisans, of course those are pretty expensive. There is a small home-made museum inside which costs 1.5€ to enter and takes 5-10 min to browse. After visiting here, at least I could notice that almost all houses in Haapsalu old town had such lace curtains in the windows.
A small museum of the Haapsalu lace. Really beautiful handicraft!
Beautiful, hand-made Haapsalu lace!
Beautiful knitted lace. Experienced, knowledgeable and helpful staff. The variety of yarns and knitting tools is somehow limited.
Lovely small, esthethically pleasing museum with very beautiful exhibition of the Haapsalu shawl patterns and examples.
