Small beautiful shrine on outskirts of Nara. Visited during the 7-5-3 holiday and saw a lot of children after the ceremony in traditional dresses - very cute sighting. Nearby there's a pond with Koi fish and
25th October 2025 Nara Prefectural University invited International Students from NAIST to join their Yamanobe-no-michi Tour + Persimmon Gathering event. This shrine was the starting point of our trail up to the country side. I can only say Chickens... chickens everywhere. May the Chicken protect everyone!
Great place to visit while acrossing the Yamanobe no michi. Said the sacred chickens here are the original residents before human. Correct me if I wrong.
Nice temple with a great atmosphere, there are many roosters and chickens roaming freely in the temple precints. The Yamanobe trail pass from this temple.
Temple full of roosters and chickens... It was so wonderful to see them all free ranging about. They were a delight to behold 🥰
Ancient shrine. They have coops full of live chickens; including a special breed with long tails. In the spring, the street near here is lined with cherry trees. In the fall there are nearby streets lined with gingko trees.
Nice shrine along the Yamanobenomichi trail. Was quiet and relaxing there. Quite a relieve after the craze in Nara. Funny to see the chickens running around there.
An old and famous Japanese shrine. Sakura when spring and maple when autumn can be seen here. The chicken inside are The God. Different from any other shrine in Japan.

Very beautiful area and shrine
Nice temple with beautiful gardens. There is a small paints exposition.
Pretty but comes with a 400yen entry fee that's not really worth it considering there are other beautiful temples and gardens around the area that are free to enter.
So peaceful and the lake and forest setting was one of the prettiest ones we have seen
(Translated by Google) Chogakuji Temple! Apparently this is an ancient temple founded by Kobo Daishi as a shrine temple for Yamato Shrine. It's a fairly large temple. There are four buildings and five Buddha statues designated as Important Cultural Properties. It's about halfway along the Yamanobe Trail, but I spent too much time on the first half this time, so I only got a quick look at Chogakuji Temple. What a shame. Apparently you've been able to eat somen noodles inside the temple for a long time, but it seems to be closed now. I'd like to try it sometime. I'd also like to see the painting of Hell.

It was once a large temple, but fell into decline due to fires during wars and the anti-Buddhist movement. The elegant Heian-era bell tower gate is the only remaining structure from the original construction, serving as both a tower gate and a bell tower. The Enmeiden Hall, an important early Edo period building with a hogake-zukuri design, also remains. The Amida Triad, the principal image of the temple, is the oldest Buddhist statue with glass eyes in Japan, said to have been created at the end of the Fujiwara period. I came here with a group of college students as part of a Religions of Japan course at Kansai Gaidai University. Our guides were polite and were very willing to answer questions. I was impressed at how large the facility was. Despite definitely being out of place, I didn't feel like any of the regular church goers felt upset at us being there.
25th October 2025 We, as NAIST Students joined the Yamonobe-no-michi Tour organised by students from Nara Prefectural University. Before we begin our journey up the hiking trail, we stopped by the Tenrikyo Church to pray for safety and success of future lives. It was a soothing experience.
Awesome architecture. Try to catch it during sunset as the wood grains becomes more prominent with its burnt textures. The shadows accentuate the details of this architecture near sunset. Don't miss it when you are at Tenri!
I've been a follower all my life so this will be very bias. I love this place. People here will only be there for the sole purpose of leading the Joyous Life. If you are not a part of the religion, you will be in for a treat to a very peaceful place where you will never be bothered for anything. Just walk in, watch people pray, and visit Oyasama and the memorial shrines. Nothing more, nothing less. Every visit, is just a peaceful as the the last and I've been there everyday, multiple times a day for 2 years straight during my stay in Tenri City.
When I arrived at that place, I thought: "Wow, that is the real Japan, finally" It is difficult to express how massive and how beautiful it is. It is well worth a visit if you're around Nara.
Super beautiful grounds and architecture. Not sure about the religion...
I mean it's great to see the cherry blossoms in Spring but it doesn't change anything about what they did.
Not for a tourist site, but worth a visit. Gigantic tatami (straw) mat is quite impressive.

(Translated by Google) I was looking at a map when I decided to walk the ``mountain path'' that I had long admired and found a shrine named after the old country. This was my first time visiting the shrine with such prior knowledge😊. The guidebook states that the first torii gate faces the upper path. From there, there is a long approach road that is the same length as the battleship Yamato, as stated on the explanatory signboard. It was said that this Yamato Shrine was divided into a shrine inside the battleship Yamato. I'm from the ``Space Battleship Mayato'' generation, so I have a deep-rooted impression of the ``Battleship Yamato'' depicted in the first episode. At the end of the Pacific War, in order to turn around the situation in which they were at a disadvantage, the ship headed to the Battle of Okinawa with enough fuel for one trip under the concept of a "battery." She had no choice but to be sunk by a U.S. military fighter jet off the southern coast of Kyushu. I think it should be called a "special attack." I pray for the repose of the souls of those who have passed away. At the shrine, people expressed their gratitude for the current peaceful Japan and prayed for world peace in the future😊.

(Translated by Google) The shrine's name is pronounced "Oyamato Shrine." The fact that this place, far from the sea, has a god of navigation that even envoys from the Tang Dynasty would come to offer prayers at is probably due to the shrine's history with the Emperor. Very unique museum with the collection of clothing, house utensils, and archaeological items from the world, and almost all of them are the items you may have never seen in your life with your own eyes! It will be about 20minutes walk from the station, but a real must-see venue in Tenri!
Quite impressive museum attached to the university. Artifacts on display extend from ancient Japanese to the world, including eastern Asia as well as Latin America. This museum is known for excellent special exhibitions. Well planned and very detailed. Sometimes not enough space, even this museum building is three story high. Keep your eyes for the next one. Good 20 min Walk from the Tenri station. You can take an advantage of riding the school bus, of the school is in session. All access and schedule info spelled out in their HP. Plan ahead and go go go!
The collection is absolutely amazing.

Although I had passed by this building many times on my way to worship at Ishigami Shrine, I was wondering if it would be okay for non-believers to visit, but I decided to visit because I wanted to see the Mongolian family tree that was on display in the exhibition ``Kizuna: Things that Connect People to People'' commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Tenri University. Because it is located on the premises of a new religious group facility, it is difficult for non-believers to visit, but unlike civic groups with strong ties to a certain political party, we do not try to steal your address under the guise of a signature, or try to extort activity expenses under the guise of a campaign. It's not that there isn't some religious overtones, but it's not so much that non-believers would be offended. The facility is clean and well-maintained, and even if it depends on the special exhibits, you'll be satisfied if the treasure you're looking for is on display. In Kitano, Kobe, there is a facility called the Kobe Municipal Overseas Emigration and Cultural Exchange Center. It was built as a "national emigrant detention center" to send immigrants from Brazil and other countries overseas. There were also facilities in Yokohama and Kobe, but the Yokohama building was demolished and only the Kobe building remains. There are many documents from that time on display, but I learned for the first time here about models of homes in Brazil and death reports written by people who died during their travels. I knew from documents that life in Brazil was difficult, but when I saw the model homes, I was surprised and thought, "They lived in places like this!?" The walls are so thin. Seeing is believing. I think it is very valuable. There are no exhibits of these homes at the Kobe facility. A magnificent pit-style stone chamber has been recreated exactly as it was when it was excavated. Rows of triangular-rimmed mirrors decorated with divine beasts are lined up, and it's easy to imagine how astonished the first person to discover them must have been. The vermilion paint, believed to have been used as a talisman, also adds to the sense of realism. A variety of mirrors are on display on the second floor, and is recommended for fans of ancient history. The view of the stone chamber from above is magnificent. It's also great to be able to view it from this angle. Aerial photographs of the surrounding tumuli are also displayed on the first floor. Due to their sheer size, it's difficult to grasp the true essence of the tumulus from up close. Viewing it from a bird's-eye view is essential. The tomb, located at the foot of the mountain on the eastern edge of the Nara Basin, offered a long-distance view of the basin. There was a walking path around the moat. It was well-maintained and easy to walk on. I visited the tomb in the evening. I could hear the chirping of insects mixed with the sound of cicadas. I saw a white-tailed skimmer flying. Designed by Nendo. Good public space with a cafe and a bike shop. Good place to just take a break and have a snack
Great place for kids to play. Also, good Nendo project.

Its unique design is based on an ancient tomb motif, and it's a space where you can take a break and relax, with a sense of greenery and spaciousness that you wouldn't expect in front of a station. There are plenty of benches, tables, and shady spaces, making it a perfect place to take a break between shopping or with children. Mysterious and magical place. Currently looking for a new tenant, I wanna love here but the commute would be horrendous.
A quiet, unmanned shrine with a nice roof.
(Translated by Google) I have known about the shrine for over five years, but I was finally invited to visit. It is difficult to visit by car, so I planned to visit on foot, and my wish came true. From the name of the shrine and its location, I imagined that the wabi-sabi feeling of autumn during the long rains would be appropriate. I was invited on a sunny day in the rainy season, but the grounds were covered with trees and were slightly shaded, and the moss-covered roofs somehow gave me a sense of wabi-sabi. This is a personal opinion, so it may differ from person to person. Once you pass through the torii gate, the approach to the shrine is dimly lit and continues to the grounds. The air is clearly different once you pass through the torii gate. However, there is no sense of intimidation, and the tranquility is comfortable, the area around the main hall is bright, and the forest behind it has an attractive atmosphere of a guardian deity and a barrier. The lanterns are clearly influenced by Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and the main hall is also Kasuga-style. If the enshrined deities, Ameno-Koyane-no-Mikoto and Hime-Omikami, are Ameno-Mitsu-Tamateru-Hime-no-Mikoto, then it is the same as Kasuga Taisha Shrine, so there must have been an influence. Takemikazuchi-no-Mikoto and Futsunushi-no-Mikoto are also enshrined here, and as these two are gods of war and military power, it is possible that they were dedicated by warriors who ruled the area. From the free parking lot near Tenri City's stadium, walk along the Yamanobe trail along the persimmon fields to arrive. The atmosphere was fascinating and I am grateful to have been invited. Results of excavations since the Showa era Valuable grave goods such as bronze mirrors, iron products, Haji pottery, and wooden products were unearthed and have been designated as important cultural properties. The Tenri City Kurozuka Tumulus Exhibition Hall is located next to the tumulus and can be visited for free. When I visited, the atmosphere was very calm and nice. The grounds are maintained as a park, where you can see local people strolling around. It is also possible to climb to the top of the mound, and from the hill you can see the town of Yanagimoto and the Hashigaku tomb. This place was also the center of Yanagimoto during the Edo period, and it is said that there was a camp for the Yanagimoto clan, which was established by the son of Nobunaga's younger brother, Oda Yurakusai. There is a community center on the east side of the moat, and an elementary school across the road to the south, showing that it still functions as an indispensable place for the community. It is a keyhole-shaped tomb famous for the excavation of 33 triangular-rimmed god and beast mirrors. Many ancient tombs have lost their buried goods due to grave robbery, but this tomb escaped grave robbery as the stone chamber collapsed due to an earthquake shortly after the burial. The tomb was located in the urban area of Yanagimoto-cho, sandwiched between the JR Sakurai Line and National Route 169. There was a tomb exhibition hall next to the moat of the tomb, but it was closed for the Bon holiday. Children on summer vacation were playing near the exhibition hall. At first, there was no one in the tomb. When I was in the rear circular mound of the mound, a person climbed up. That was the only person I met in the tomb. It seemed that algae were growing, and the moat was yellow-green all over. There is a theory that the triangular-rimmed mirror decorated with divine beasts is Himiko's mirror, but I don't think that is the case with the 33 mirrors in this tumulus. According to the Gishiwajinden, Himiko was bestowed with 100 bronze mirrors. This tumulus did not seem so special that one-third of them were buried there. Isonokami Shrine, which is also located in Tenri, was crowded with people, so I was worried that there would be a lot of people here as well, but my fears turned out to be unfounded and I was able to visit the shrine with a very relaxed feeling. There was no one else there, so it was comfortable. Although there were no people around, the shrine was a very nice, clean, and well-maintained shrine. There wasn't a single piece of trash left on the grounds, and it was very well kept, making it a really pleasant space. Also, the guardian dogs are very nice! Although it is large, it has a charming expression and a friendly appearance. He has a unique and fun personality, and I was happy to meet him this time. It is a shrine that I would like to visit again if I have the opportunity. (Translated by Google) Previously, there was a special feature on TV called ``Who was the most unlucky man in Japanese history?'' The first place went to Narihira Ariwara. However, he must have had great physical strength, as he crossed the Juso Pass from Nara almost every day to meet a woman in Kawachi. However, looking at the state of this Arihara Shrine, I feel sad about the fate of Moteru Otoko. Is it the same now as in the past? At that time, it would have been extremely difficult to cross Tatsuta from Yashimoto-cho and get to Kawachi Province, as there was no transportation system like we have today. Additionally, in Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City, the ``Ariwara Narihira Residence Ruins'' have been confirmed along Oike Street. Everyone is saying that the temple grounds are never kept clean, and I myself think that it needs a little more cleaning. However, although it may be a distortion of history and space-time, why not just take it lightly and say that they are still busy commuting and are unable to clean the shrine grounds? Don't you find yourself smiling just because Narihira is enshrined there? If you go west from here for a while, you will see the road that Narihira used to walk through and the Sugatami Well, so please stop by there as well. In addition, in front of the main shrine, an A4 pouch-type replica of Ariwara Narihira's Hyakunin Isshu is distributed, ``limited to one item per person.'' I think this kind of consideration is wonderful. Therefore, I gave an overall rating of 5 stars. Taoyanagi Haseo [Meaning of the inscription] The willow tree seems to be quietly weeping and sleeping. A nightingale is chirping, but perhaps the soul of the sleeping willow has escaped and turned into a nightingale. In other words, is Yanagi sleeping with her own soul as a nightingale?
