Restored wooden pier on stilts, used by local fishermen & a popular spot for sunset photography.
Slide 1 of 8
Amazing views! You can check out the rice patties or walk the board walk. There are a lot of fishing sacks on the boardwalk and if you are lucky like me, you will be able to buy fresh fish, clams and oysters. There was a also a car selling home grown veggies/fruits/potatoes.
Very cool location for a view over the Sado river.
For those who like nature. It's basic and simple as it should be.
Small old pier, which has a low tide in the morning, giving it the looks of a ghost town, and rises in the afternoon with amazing views at sunset. The story behind is very curious, worth the stop if you are around, But I can only recommend it in the afternoon.
Special and quiet place. Fishermans docks with their fishing boats and their modest net storage huts. All huts are tiny as they serve to store nets and other fising materials. A true to life place. Great for photography and art. Once you start photographing and catching moments is difficult to stop. It is an endless visual resource venue. Inspiring and peaceful. Careful with kids due to hnstable pavement and no fences, too. Very simple and very zen. Totally worth to visit any time/ day/ hour. Was a lovely, positive surprise
Not super touristic, I got there while scounting the map in Comporta. It's basically a place for the local fishermen, but worth a visit if you are driving anyway in this area.
It's a beautiful place that was not actually built for tourists... It has a purpose, as a pier for the local fishermen. Be sure not to interfere with the activities of the fishermen. None the less, it's a beautiful place for stunning pictures, specially at sunset or sun rise.
Perfect photo place. Very beautiful place to visit. Enjoy while it is still calm.

Polished hotel in a hilltop castle, plus dining, event space & an outdoor pool with scenic views.

Those who have seen my reviews, know that I can be somewhat critical at times. However, this Pousada would deserve 6 stars if we could give them. We went here as a couple and were pleasantly surprised by the vastness of the castelo, the design of the interior, the friendliness of the staff, the space of the room and last-but not least the quality of the breakfast. Mid December the hotel was virtually empty which left us all the time to enjoy the atmosphere it has on offer. And that is a lot. Sitting by the fireplace in the evening, after playing some snooker, enjoying the spirits of the honesty bar; what more to wish for? Well a good sleep; the generously sized beds with high quality mattress are made for this. What helped were the last minute off-season offers which added to the experience. Is there nothing to whine? Yes, the outdoor pool was ice cold and the indoor one with sauna, we did not discover. ;-)
I used already a few times the charging station of this beautiful hotel. But today I was refused and told that only hotel guests are allowed to use it. It is still very difficult in Portugal to find a fitting charging station for your electric car and it is a very unpolite and rude behaviour to disallow the usage. The hotel has two charging points and both were available.
Views are stunning. Hotel itself is very dated and rather tatty. Needs refurbishment. Staff were lovely but breakfast was a massive fail - food products were inferior, given the prices, and the grounds are in need of better care - cigarette butts litter the gravel and the plants are in need of love. On the plus side dogs are allowed although they charged us a 60 euros for our two boys ( one small and one medium). That said, they did give the boys a lovely furry friends treat box. So on the whole, lovely stay but over priced for the condition and quality of food.
A Perfect Stay at the Pousada em Alcácer do Sal Our stay at the Pousada was simply perfect from start to finish and we were a family group of 10. Everything exceeded our expectations: the rooms were spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable. The atmosphere throughout the property strikes a perfect balance between historical charm and modern comfort. The pool area was a true highlight: serene, well-maintained, and ideal for relaxing under the Alentejo sun. The food was also outstanding, with a great variety and high-quality ingredients that showcased the region’s flavors beautifully. Above all, the staff were warm, professional, and attentive, making us feel welcome and cared for at every moment. It’s rare to find a place where everything comes together so harmoniously, but this is it. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a peaceful, authentic, and luxurious experience in Alcácer do Sal. We can't wait to return!
This Pousada sits in a very beautiful and historic location. Don't miss seeing the historical museum just down below the lobby, it's definitely worth a visit, and the chapel next door is also a very interesting museum. Actually the whole town of Alcácer was quite an interesting and friendly place. This is very well run hotel, all the way from the front desk to the restaurant. Carla at the desk was charming and very helpful, as was all the front desk staff. And Afonso did a great job in the restaurant the night we ate there, in spite of being the only waiter for the whole room. We had a very comfortable stay, and an excellent meal. And breakfast, well it was about as good as it gets! We wanted for nada! These folks understand hospitality. Muito obrigado por tudo!
I went there on a weekend with my wife, to relax and get away from the noise ... The hotel is a beautiful and historic place overlooking the river and the surrounding area. The restaurant is also good and the service at the hotel in general is great. Don't expect the latest state-of-the-art room equipment though.
The Castelo itself offers everything you would expect from a Pousada. The rooms have seen better days..., the silicone joints in the bathroom were moldy - the entrance corridor was not bright and welcoming due to the dark brown build in wardrobe and the wainscoting of the same nature. The bedroom was good, The small terrace was nice, offering a great view towards the valley. The service in this Pousada in contrast to other Pousadas was reasonably good. I would not recommend the restaurant.
Historic pousada, well situated. It's a 10 minute walk from the rivierbank, where thé shops and restaurants are. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice pool. Big and clean rooms. The building is impresive.

Was not expecting the amount of information I got from this museum. Very enlightening about the thousands of years of History regarding this, seemingly unimportant, little town. Worth visiting.
The entry price for the cripta (3,40 euros) is not worth paying the price. Its price should be 1 euro or even less. Also, they only accept Portuguese credit cards or alternatively cash. You can visit the Pousada and its defensive walls for free on mondays
If you are in Alcacer do Sal take some time to visit this museum with items and even remains of a old bronze age house. The introducing film in English is quiet informative and gives you an idea what they have found while building the pousada in the old Castle walls. English explanation.
Roman remains and artefacts expertly displayed. Charming young man helped bring it all alive.
Interesting historical museum under the hotel.
Wonderful archealogical site that is well preserved and catalogued.
Great place to visit!

Within this space, we journey through 2,500 years of history, as the set of ruins allows us to study the various overlapping eras, from the 7th century BC to the 19th century. On display, we can admire archaeological finds representing various chronological periods. It deserves a detailed visit, such is the historical richness here. (Translated by Google) The two bell towers, which house stork nests, and the main façade, with a marble portico with a curved pediment, dominate the landscape of the city seen from Sado. Of unknown foundation, it already existed in the 17th century. In the 17th century, to respond to the faithful, the hermitage took its current form by order of D. João V, as Grand Master of the Order of Santiago, in the 18th century. It became the seat of the parish of Santiago in 1634, during the reign of Philip III of Portugal, after the Church of Nª Srª da Consolação abandoned it. The Church of Santiago stands on an imposing platform with a large staircase. The exterior, sober, orderly and rectilinear, contrasts with the richness of the interior, where the paintings, carvings and tile panels stand out. The temple, with a single nave of large proportions, typically from the 18th century, is flanked by the arches of the chapels of Mannerist and Baroque inspiration. The tiles, composed of two bands, were attributed to Teotónio dos Santos, who worked there in the second decade of the 18th century. On the interior street, the panels tell the life of the apostle Santiago; In the upper part scenes from the life of the Virgin take place. The tiles continue on the sides of the main chapel, showing Santiago being ordained a knight of Christ and on the main altar there are also two images of the patron saint of this church. The entire background of the altar is occupied by the painting of Santiago on horseback, with the defeated Moors at his feet, attributed to Pedro Alexandrino; To the left, another panel shows Santiago the pilgrim, walking with his staff and holding the sacred book. (Translated by Google) The most beautiful village of the Alentejo region is Santa Susana. Founded in the 20th century, as a temporary settlement for agricultural workers and their families, it turned into an original village, which, in addition, became the founder of the Portuguese tradition - to paint houses in white and blue colors😍 The residents of Santa Susana still carefully cherish this tradition, which is why every 2 years everyone gathers together to refresh the paint on all the houses, even the abandoned and neglected ones, in order to preserve the beauty and authenticity of this incredible village. Today, Santa Susana has the typical architecture of the Alentejo region - one-story whitewashed houses, with blue doors, shutters and wide longitudinal stripes, and, of course, massive chimneys🏠 The village is tiny! There are only 10 streets and less than a hundred people. 🍽 There is no grocery store here, but there is a small restaurant where you can drink coffee with delicious homemade pastries and try local cuisine, the basis of which is fish, because the village is on the shore of the Pego do Altar reservoir. What else is worth seeing in Santa Susana besides its cute houses: ⛪️ Church founded by the Order of Santiago in the 16th century. However, we did not manage to see the frescoes and paintings on the boards in the main chapel - 16th century, as well as the decoration of the altar of the 18th century, because the church was closed - on Sunday morning, when the service should have started🤷‍♀️ 🌁 The baroque bridge - Ponte de Rio Mourinho, built in the 19th century, is buried under the Pego do Altar water column, so it can be seen only in periods of severe drought, when the water level in the reservoir is critically reduced. 🧘‍♂️Buddhist temple - Stupa Tashi Gomang, one of the largest in Western Europe. His stupa is 16 m high. What else struck me in my heart ❤️ was the road to the village of Santa Susana: picturesque hills planted with cork trees, vineyards, apiaries, green meadows where cows and sheep graze, endless rice fields, and stork nests on every tree post.

A few years later, these workers ended up taking their families there and transforming the space into a village called Santa Susana. And so, by chance, one of the most beautiful villages in Alentejo was born. Santa Susana is close to the Alcáçovas river and the Pego do Altar Dam, in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal. It is about 1h30 from Lisbon. The houses are all similar. They have only one floor and are whitewashed, with a blue stripe on the windows and doors. In addition, the houses all have identical chimneys and some of the front doors have the initials of cousins Henrique and Manuel, along with the date they were built. On average, they are painted every two years, by the residents themselves. Even those that are not inhabited are painted by the neighbours, who are proud of this model village in the region. Incredible scenery dampened by restrictive public access. Signs on the entrance are very misleading, stating "private property, no entrance" in english and Portugese, but these signs are behind the fenceline and only placed there to scare away curious drivers. Road CM 1061 is a public road maintained by the municipality of Alcácer do Sal and the public has the right to enter and proceed to the bay, despite ingenious and intimidating signs.
