Hiking area
Nature & Parks
This picturesque & challenging hiking trail along a river passes several waterfalls & natural pools.
Slide 1 of 8
This felt like a quite different, challenging and one of the most rewarding hiking experience for me. Normally when I hike, I end up in a lake, or a waterfall, or a hill with a good sight (which certainly is cool on its own). This hike is different. It goes through the river, surrounded by the great canyons walls, it has not one but a few pools and waterfalls through the way - very beautiful - and you need to actually cross the river around 20 times through the track. We went in the winter so unfortunately it was a bit cold for us to enter the pools and waterfalls (even without entering them it was a 6-7 hours hike), so to take best advantage of the hike, go in the summer. The above said, this was also a fairly challenging hike. The path is not a easy one as you will be mostly moving through rocks alongside the river. You need to be in reasonable shape to do it as it will be a quite long hike, and be careful with your steps on the rocks. Lastly, in this hike it is mandatory that you to go with a registered guide so make sure you hire one before you go on it.
Absolutely amazing! The beginning of the trail is a bit tricky, but the trekking along the river and all the times you have to cross it from one side to another, are really good as a trekking experience. And the final view, the portal, breath taking.
Excellent experience. Technical as you spend the best part of 8 hours walking on rocks. Guide needed upon entering park. Highly recommended Casiano from Pousado Nativos.
Great hiking, beautiful place!
Amazing place to spend a adventure day
(Translated by Google) Surreal place! The height of the rocky walls and the cleanliness of the water are impressive. The trail is well-maintained, with no trash, drinking water, several swimming holes and waterfalls. Moderate trail, requiring at least some prior physical preparation, but not difficult at all. The guides are well-prepared and knowledgeable about the area. Entrance to the park is organized. (Original) Lugar surreal!
(Translated by Google) Incredible place with lush landscapes. I went during the rainy season and this affected visibility a bit, but it still showed how beautiful the place is. I will definitely be back. I understand the need for local guides to go to Rio do Boi, but they could make entry easier for those who already have experience with trails. Unfortunately, depending on the local guide inhibited us from continuing the trail simply because of ego. We were late for the start of the trail and they wanted to leave and not be late for the return trip. This doesn't make sense considering the cost of hiring a guide and also the technical effort, which is very low.
(Translated by Google) Everyone knows the trail offers spectacular views. I did it with guide Tere (@ducanyon), and she was incredible. It's mandatory to go with a guide, so look for one who knows how to respect your time. The trail is long, 14km in total, with about 4km (more or less) in dense forest and 3km along the river. The worst part is the hike on the rocks around the river. There are 20 river crossings in total, and I found it easier than I expected. We went in October, and the river level was low, which made it easier. Once you get your feet wet the first time, you get used to the wet, and it doesn't bother you as much. Some shin guards hurt, but some people recommend wearing long socks to help, as shin guards are mandatory to avoid injuries from rocks and animal bites (we didn't encounter any snakes along the way, thank goodness!!! But you can find them). At the time we visited (October 2020), the maximum group size allowed was 5 people per guide due to the pandemic, and a maximum of 55 people per day to enter the park, so book in advance! It's possible to reach Praia Grande via the mountains from Cambará do Sul, but it's a 36km dirt road and there's a chance of A LOT of fog (check the weather forecast), making the route dangerous at certain times and with low visibility. You can also get there via the "Rota do Sol" (Sun Route), which is much more peaceful but much longer. In short: plan ahead and enjoy the trail—it's SO worth it.

(Translated by Google) My boyfriend and I booked the "Crowned Indians" route via WhatsApp, imagining a peaceful trail with the horses. When we arrived and mounted, the animals' stress was immediately noticeable: snorting, ears back, and difficulty obeying. My boyfriend and I had ridden horses many times before, he even lassoing in his teens, and it was clear that something wasn't right. When we asked the guide, he said that the mare I was riding was "jealous" of the mare he was riding. From then on, the ride was very tense, including kicking while we were on them. The animals were clearly uncomfortable with the situation. Furthermore, several points during the ride involved intense runs through the woods, which we weren't warned about beforehand, and all of this was done without helmets. We managed to stay steady, but I believe this wouldn't be the case for someone without riding experience. In other words, our perception was one of a lack of commitment not only to the well-being of the horses, but also to the safety of those who hire the service. Furthermore, the tour is clearly designed for "Instagram posts"; the guide asked us to stop every 10 meters to take a video or a reel – which my boyfriend and I also hated, since we hired the tour to enjoy the beauty of the place and not to advertise for anyone. To top off the terrible experience, at the end of the tour we passed a shack with an elderly man sitting in the yard, clearly in a vulnerable social situation, and the guide made the following comment, in a completely inappropriate and insensitive manner, and in a loud and clear voice: "that's the definition of being able to live with little." Finally, we do not recommend this tour to anyone, especially those who have never ridden a horse before.

He also explains the whole history of the place, takes beautiful photos and videos of us. We have already done Malacara at the end of 2024, Rio do Boi yesterday (Jan/2025) and we have also done an ATV tour under his recommendation. And of course, we will do many more trails with him. After all, there are more than 68 canyons to explore. Next we want to do Fortaleza Canyon (it is above the canyons), it will be spectacular!

(Translated by Google) The Rio do Boi trail was, without a doubt, one of the most remarkable experiences of direct contact with nature that I have ever had. The immersion inside the Itaimbezinho Canyon is indescribable – the landscape is breathtaking, with immense walls, lush vegetation and the constant sound of the river accompanying us throughout the entire trail. I would especially like to highlight the work of our guide, Giovani, who was impeccable from start to finish. From the initial instructions to the end of the trail, he demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the region, experience, and constant attention to the safety and well-being of the group. He knew how to guide the trail with ease, alternating technical information about the local ecosystem with interesting facts that made the hike even more interesting. In addition, Giovani was extremely helpful and attentive to everyone, respecting the pace of the group and ensuring that everyone enjoyed every moment to the fullest. His friendliness and professionalism made all the difference in the experience. I highly recommend Tribo dos Canyons to anyone looking for an authentic, safe and enriching experience in the canyons of southern Brazil. Very beautiful views even with fog. The best part was the little house that sells homemade pastel!
This park is for the rich, not for normal people, to whom it should be accessible! The greed is disgusting. With all the taxes wasted in Brazil, there was not money left to make national heritage accesible to the general public? Whoever is responsible for this absurd entrance fee and commercial industrialization of national heritage should be ashamed, and the state lawmakers should do something. In Rio de Janerio, National Parques are for free. Poor or rich, anyone can enter for free. In Rio Grande do Sul, all parks are difficult to enter (registration processes for national forests are stupidly beaurocratic, and extreme fees for national parks). Its beyond absurd, especially considering how much nature has been destroyed. Never seen anything like in Rio Grande do Sul before. Not in Brazil and not in any other country. Basically no forest or park where people can just go for free without paying fees or registrating 3 days in advance through beaurocratic application forms, having to wait for approval. Absurd and unjust. Its a disgrace!
Amazing place, but be mindful of the weather. I've been told that the winter is the best season to visit. If you visit during the summer you might end up only seeing fog like I did. 🙃
Such a beautiful landscape!! A tropical version of the Grand Canyon. A must see
The park is really beautiful and definitely worth visiting. They ask for donations as the government no longer supports it fully or at all! The information centre is in need of updating as is the picnic area and some of the paths.
Sleeping in onorio camping. Amazing place with amazing people

In addition, each of us had a horse with a different personality (some were calmer, others were faster, it was a lot of fun lol). Afterwards, we had breakfast outdoors, admiring the beautiful landscape with toast from a root toaster lol. Finally, we took a little walk around the canyons' home (wonderful). This report is from a trip that took place a few years ago, but looking at the photos I realized that I hadn't reviewed it here. Oh, the guy who accompanied us was a 10. We were very well looked after. I hope I can go back soon! Fomos muita bem atendidas. The atmosphere was warm, with black coffee and snacks available. There's also a tourist shop on site, with small replicas of balloons and everything you could imagine related to this activity. After everyone arrived, a van took us to the boarding area. Upon arrival, everything was beautiful, with several balloons preparing for takeoff. As we climbed into the basket, we received the necessary instructions, including how to position ourselves in the balloon, how to land, and so on. Our balloon had music, and the group was very excited; the view and experience were unique. Two skydivers boarded with us, who, from an altitude of 900 meters, jumped together and treated us to a show that wasn't even included in the package. Upon landing, the basket may have rocked a few times, but nothing dangerous. The ground crew accompanied the landing and brought us chilled sparkling wine and glasses. Our pilot opened the sparkling wine with a saber and gave a speech about ballooning. It was amazing, the company and pilot were super professional. I recommend it; you have to experience it at least once in your life!

We started to find it strange, because the flight was supposed to be at sunrise, but by then it was getting light, and no one was telling us anything. At a certain point, all the balloons were taking off, and we went after the guide to find out what was going on. He said that because of the wind, we wouldn't fly, for safety reasons. He hinted that all the other agencies were being irresponsible (only this agency didn't fly). But from the moment we arrived, there was no movement to inflate our balloon, nor did they tell us which one it was. We found it disorganized, and even if it did fly, it wouldn't be at sunrise as they had said, due to the time we arrived. Of course, we understand the safety issue, but there was a lack of transparency and organization.
