Castello di Torrechiara is incredible. Built in the 1400s by Pier Maria Rossi as both a fortress and a love story for Bianca Pellegrini, it has been beautifully preserved. Walking through the frescoed halls and the famous Golden Chamber is a real highlight. The tour lasts about 45 minutes to an hour which is just the right amount of time to take it all in. What makes the visit even better is the small village that sits right on the castle property up the hill. There is a restaurant, wine tasting, and a few places to relax, and it feels like stepping back into another time. The combination of the castle and the little hamlet makes this well worth the drive from Parma and a perfect way to spend part of the day.

The €8 entry fee is quite worth it. Do note there a very small parking at the top, but it’s for just a few cars. The main parking is at the bottom of the small hill and you need to walk ~7 minutes uphill to reach it. Worth a visit!

Also lovely views of the surrounding countryside and there’s a lovely medieval village nearby with a restaurant and shops selling local produce - ham, cheese, wine and more. We did a fascinating 45 minute guided tour in Italian - which cost 5 euros each - with a very good guide called Giacomo.

The museum is quite small and only worth visiting if you're particularly interested in the history of prosciutto. During my visit, I received no assistance with the tour, and the service was lacking when I asked to taste the prosciutto. Additionally, the museum is located fairly far from the city center, and I didn't feel the experience was worth the trip.

On our tour there was just the tour guide and my wife and I. Very interesting to see how the ham is produced and the standards it needs to meet to be authentic Parma ham. There was a tasting at the end which was nice. It was 25 euros each which felt a little expensive for what it was but was worth it.
