This is a totally fascinating and great place to visit - it's great for kids, who can run around pretending to be soldiers invading the ruins. It's a huge site - we had no idea the site was so massive or that it had such a fascinating history. There are plenty of information boards around or you can do an audio tour. There is parking on site. This is an English Heritage property which is well worth visiting.
This was a huge surprise! I love a castle and this really surpassed my expectations. It's a beautiful site, well laid out with information boards, and an excellent free audio guide. It's very atmospheric and I loved the stories about the family in the guide. Definitely go!
We decided to drive by but didn’t have time to explore the ruins. There was a family there that seemed to be enjoying it. The site is pretty and not too far from the road. They also offer picnic tables. Bring a lunch or snack and enjoy the country side.
My husband and I fell upon this place by chance of Google Maps. It’s a very cool place! When you visit please do the audio tour (we didn’t) AND look up the full history of the castle- there’s so much scandal and loss embedded into this property.
Definitely worth doing the audio tour to learn about the Hungerford family and interesting things that went on in the castle to make it make sense when walking round. Not much of the castle left, but the Priests House and the Chapel have been restored. It was a nice site to go around, we spent around 2 hours there. Not too difficult to access either, just off the main road, but set in lovely countryside. Parking for about 25 cars.
Beautiful ruin of a castle. Great place for a picnic with shady spots. Daughter enjoyed the audio guide and trail. Can make longer day out of it by visiting the weir for a swim, but you’ll need to pay a membership fee £25 (then can use for the whole season)
a bit basic but some aspects of it are really interesting, just not sure if it'd be worth it without a membership. it's not actually that gruesome of a place as is described, but rather sad. some really nice smaller decorations and art in the chapel building. they have toilets here.
This is well worth a visit. The castle has a beautiful location and the audio guide is well worth using. The chapel with its tombs and crypt are fascinating. The staff are so friendly and helpful.
