Shhhhh! Wonderful surf beach with relaxed vibe. Beautiful area. Has a nostalgic and undiscovered feel. You can become part of the community here almost instantly. The mangrove forest walk is a treat. Need a ticket. Love this area! Pura vida all the way
The owner's 9 years in Italy show in the pizza quality. The Arab Antipasto and the Blu, Jungle & Bacon Pizza, especially, would hold their own against any highly rated big city place.
Secluded Paradise in the process of being discovered. Get there before it's too late
I have been at beaches all over the world and this is one of my favourite! Just so fun. Waves rolling in but gently and predictable. You can get out a long ways. Warm clean water. Great sunsets. One of my top 10 beaches in Costa Rica!
Beautiful beach with lots of surf and fishing. Perfect for walks on the beach with smooth sand and much less rocks.
This beach seems more for surfers than anybody else. Waves are huge and the water comes pretty far up the shore. The main complaint I have about this place is that the road getting here is terrible. I would recommend something with a high front and rear clearance. I did it with low clearance kia, it was possible by going slow but it took pretty long. There is parking. If you type in Playa avellana on Waze it will take you to the correct place.
Pristine beach, isolated from the hustle of Tamarindo and more than 5 surf breaks for all levels.
This place is known as little Hawaii, we didn’t understand why. The beach is rocky and hard to get in. You have to access it thru the restaurant Lola’s, the location in the map shows the access via Hacienda Pinilla, which you need to call in advance and make a reservation. I think they charge $35 per person for the day use of Hacienda Pinilla beach bar. We didn’t visit it since we accessed the beach via Lola’s restaurant. The street to access the beach is rough, but most beach access on this side of the coast are bad.

Indy, Marian, Jonathan and the rest of the team were awesome on my trip to Avellanas. Our first session was a first time lesson for my kids (ages 5-9). Their approach had the kids standing up and loving it very quickly. Jonathan helped me (a novice surfer) even get into several nice waves to start our trip. I was so impressed and pumped up after the first session I went out twice for intermediate lessons with Indy for two dawn patrol sessions. Each session I improved and got great advice and local knowledge that would have taken me forever to get on my own. For all you dads on family vacation there really is time to surf. Go early and go with Indy and you’ll maximize your time and improve your surfing! Great job School of Stoke! I will be back! Pura Vida!
My family ( both adults and adolescents) and I enjoyed 3 surfing lessons with the School of Stoke! Indy, Memo and Marian provided us with tips to improve our surfing, ensured our safety and made sure we had fun. We really loved the pictures that Marian took of us in the water and sharing them with our family was an unexpected highlight. We look forward to the opportunity to surfing with this group again!
Marian’s and Indy’ enthusiasm for surfing is unmatched. They are truly Stoked! As a novice surfer Indy gave confidence and drive to learn how to surf. Indy showed patience, knowledge and communication skills matching my experience level to the surf giving me a pathway to success. Marian picked a perfect beach and time for our lesson. If you want an amazing experience and want to learn how to surf then the School of Stoke is a perfect choice!
This experience far exceeded our expectations! My partner and I traveled together to participate in a surf and yoga retreat and we’re lucky enough to receive lessons from School of Stoke. We feel a lot more confident in our surf skills with training from Trey and Indy and went from beginner to intermediate level in three days. We had so much fun and felt very comfortable and safe the entire time. They were so motivating and genuinely kind!
I Indy and Marian provided a great experience for my first surf lesson. They were knowledgable and attentive. I enjoyed the entire session, and highly recommend the School of Stoke for anyone considering surf lessons.
My boyfriend and I had such a great first time surfing with Indy (Indigo)! He was very patient with us, his instructions were just enough so we knew what to do but were not overwhelmed, and he guided us as we took on the waves. We got to standing up on the boards fairly quickly and had such a good time! We also got photos taken of us as we learned! Highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to learn or needs guidance on improving!
Look no further. This is the BEST surf school you will find anywhere in the area. Conveniently located near the JW Marriot the SCHOOL OF STOKE takes you to one of the best Non crowded beaches in the area. This is a family run business where they have world class competitive surfers teaching you! This family is originally from California so they really understand all of the different surf and safety that comes with it. Whether you are a beginner or advanced you will feel safe and will actually learn to surf! My son and husband originally signed up to surf with them for 2 days and ended up extending it to the entire week because it was so fantastic! all my son talks about now is coming back to do it again. They even took fantastic pictures and video for him to evaluate his progress. It was a huge confidence builder and we are so thankful to Indy Trey and Mariana for their unwavering patience and outstanding teaching skills! Highlight of our 15 day trip!
Costa Rica is a magical place but School of Stoke is far more magical then that. I took my family on a vacation with 1-2 days of possible surfing. Well thanks to the school of stoke which takes teaching how to surf super serious and isn't your tamarindo surf school who just wants your money and puts you in a group of 5-10 people which by the way was all anyone wanted to do for us. I somehow found school of stoke and they changed our lives. We went from 1-2 days to 6 days. Now looking to book our next trip back to see them and get another week of surfing. I never surfed before in my life 50 year old man bringing his son to get better at surfing. Lets just say now my son has a surfing partner for life as they had me surfing and standing. The most magical family in costa rica that takes surfing more serious then anyone I saw or met the entire time I was down there. I invited them to come surf at the jersey shore and stay with us for free because when they are done with you you feel like family
