Fabulous - the ticket office guide was helpful and lovely, the conductor was funny and the train ride was great - we went as far as Mont Louis on the afternoon train and that was just perfect to get amazing views of the Pyrenees - definitely worth trying to get on the open carriage for 360° views.
Total disappointment. The steam train was not what was hoped for. There is no open car and it is impossible to take pictures through the glass. Bus of pensioners were brought to the train, they let them through out of line and there were no seats left. Foreign tourists are not welcome here. But then the seats were found
A wonderful journey up through the mountains. Very scenic beautiful views! If you go to the end of the line you have 2 1/2 hours until the return. There is a restaurant outside the station which was surprisingly good and reasonably priced. We then walked the meal off for an hour again with lovely views.
The simple things are always the most magical. Great adventure. recommend it
Loved it! Went with the family. Beautify landscapes , slow pace which is perfect to admire mountains and the views!
Early start to this mountainous railway journey between Villefranche de Conflent and ending at Latour de Carol. Memorable and relaxing journey navigating French/Spanish border.
I had a great experience riding an evening service on the Little Yellow Train! I’m traveling on a Eurail pass, and interestingly this train is 100% covered. I had a great time talking with other passengers, standing outside watching sparks fly from the 3rd rail, and soaking in the gorgeous views of the Pyrenees. This train may not be fast (25-30mph most of the time) but it’s well worth the detour.
Incredible activity! Just be careful with the tickets because they are very limited. I recommend you to buy the tickets first and then pay the parking because otherwise maybe you pay the parking and you can't get your tickets because maybe the train is fully booked. You have to go one hour in advance or more than one hour if you can to get your place. The employees are very nice and some of them speak Spanish and English.

€5 an adult - for an amazing walk along the ramparts of this old town. Honestly, we'd pay 2 or 3 times as much for something similar in the UK. There's some ups and downs, and it's definitely advisable to wear sturdy footwear, these ramparts were built for defending the town, not for sightseeing visitors !!! There's a map available in English, and most of the information boards have a small English summary on them. Parking is outside the fortification, only a few mins away - meter at €2 for 2 hours. Stunning views from the ramparts, a 40 - 60 min tour I'd suggest to get round it all. Toilets at the entry point. Well worth a stop at if in the area.
Walking the ramparts of Villefranche-de-Conflent was like stepping back in time. The views over the village and surrounding mountains were breathtaking, and the peacefulness made it even more special. We practically had the place to ourselves, allowing us to soak in every detail. A perfect blend of history, architecture, and stunning scenery—highly recommend!
Great fortress protecting the little town. Had a lovely walk around and the Ramparts. We had a rainy day so it was not too busy. The only toilet is outside the walls on the West side.
It's a nice stop if you're passing by anyway, but the lack of parking space and the obvious overflow of tourists definitely makes it less attractive. Still, there's a reason it's unesco heritage, for the history enthusiasts it's a must see.
Villefranche de Conflent is a small, walled town in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Although apparently unremarkable when viewed on a map, I found a visit to the town (made when travelling to experience a journey on the yellow railway - an open top tourist train up the valley) to be a surprise highlight of a recent trip i made to Perpignan and its surroundings. The town oozes history - it is evident from the fortifications both in the town and immediate surroundings that the area is one which has been heavily contested throughout history. A short open-top train journey along the valley is Mont Louis which plays host to the oldest currently operational barracks of the French armed forces. It is difficult to make out in my video, but one of the most astonishing aspects of my brief sojourn to Villefranche de Conflet was the abundance of wildlife which had made its home in the pretty town. Small birds (sparrows? Starlings?) flew low overhead criss-crossing the sky in a busy, harried fashion - one which contrasted sharply to the slower paced lives of their human counterparts below. There were a number of charming cafes and bars in the town as well as restaurants. Definitely recommend a day out here consisting of: visit to the town, visit to the nearby caves, return journey to Mont Louis via the yellow train. You won't be disappointed.
A UNESCO heritage site worth visiting is the 11th-century castle.
We so nearly drove past the town as parking in a large RV was not easy but we're so glad that we found somewhere. The ramparts are amazing and there is so much to see that you could be inside for hours. It also retains a real atmosphere which is important for us. There are so many beautifully restored buildings where the atmosphere has been killed. Do not drive past this town without taking the time to visit the ramparts. An amazing lace in a wonderful region.
One of the most preserved château Great place to visite. Parking just in front of the château.

This place was cool. It was nice to visit in the summer because it was so hot outside. When you are inside it's nice and fresh. We loved it. There is no food. There is a light show. There are A LOT of stairs. OK for me me and my partner but we saw elderly people and some were doing well while others seemed to struggle. There were guided tours or you can explore on your own. Fun place. There is a gift shop inthe location. If you are purchasing tickets there is a place in the village that sells them for 4 euro less. Enjoy!
A really fascinating place to visit. Beautiful caves with some of the best formations I have seen, and somewhere to see all types. Really well laid out and a good creative light and music show in the end cavern.
Stunning, Wonderful trip to Grottes des Canalettes during a recent day trip i took to the area to ride the Yellow open top tourist train from Villefranche de Conflent to Mont Louis and back (also recommended). The caves were extensive and had been sensitively developed into an interactive feeling and beautiful tourist attraction which sought to highlight aspects of local culture and history. The light shows within this cave system were a particular highlight of my trip as they had been designed and sound tracked by local audio visual designers and engineers. The resulting display can only be described as magical and awe inspiring, as moving lights dappled over the cave walls created an almost other worldly feeling of elation and unbridled joy within all who viewed them during my visit. A wonderful combination of natural beauty and human ingenuity, Grottes des Canalettes has everything you could want from a flying 1.5 hour visit to a cave system in the Pyrenean foothills.
I highly recommend visiting Grottes des Canalettes! It's a beautiful place and one of the largest caves I have ever explored. The stunning formations inside are truly captivating. Additionally, there’s a small area with dinosaur figures nearby, which adds a fun touch to the experience. It's a perfect outing for nature lovers and anyone looking to marvel at the wonders of the underground!
An absolutely magical experience! We had the entire Grotte des Canalettes to ourselves—quiet, peaceful, and awe-inspiring. The formations are stunning, and the light show paired with music was truly mesmerizing. It felt like a private concert in nature’s cathedral. A hidden gem and a must-visit if you’re near Villefranche-de-Conflent!
Excellently preserved cave. A long area being accessible and the visual/audio show at the end of the cave was really excellent. Well worth a visit. Lots of steps but platforms for breaks and plenty of seats. Fine and safe with a toddler.
It’s an beautiful cave / grotte, with some very outstanding and unique formations. What i dislike is the very broad use of cement and the place of name signs and other things like name plates. The light and music show is nice, but i prefer a more minimalistic experience, the nature is beautiful enough with some additional light.
An amazing cave system, with a well maintained self guided route. I was somewhat concerned that it would be over commercialized since it is privately owned, but the owners have done a reasonable job of not going over the top on the tourist glitz (of course there is the obligatory gift shop that you have to pass to exit but it's reasonably low key). Well worth a visit.

Definitely worth a visit! If you visit the enchanting village of Villefranche-de-Conflent, you can't miss it. The route starts within the fortified village and it takes about 20 to 30 minutes to reach the fort, where you can choose wether if going through a 1000 stairs or through the mountain with an easy -and uphill- forest track. Once you get there, a stablished route is followed from the outside to the inside and back outside, with a paper guide with all the different rooms and elements. There is also a bar with a terrace where you can have a drink afterwards. It is pet friendly 🐾.
Amazing view once you get up there. You can walk up the trail or there is a 4x4 that can take to you up there and back. Pick up is in the town center. I think it's an extra 3 euros each way which is purchased with the entrance ticket. We did the trail. Took us roughly 30min to hike up. The Fort has a cafe and toilet. At the beginning of the trail there is a free car park or you can pay for parking in the train station. We left our car in the free area. To walk around the Fort I'd say it took us 45min in total. Entrance was 8 euros.
Very interesting fortress complex above Villefrenche. It's a short but strenuous hike from town, but there are vans that take folks up at a reasonable cost. The fortress has very interesting history and the self guided tour is well laid out to appreciate the pertinent aspects. The fort is privately owned, but the owners have done a good job of not overcommercializing the site. The staff in the ticket office and bar were really nice. If you visit, go back to town via the subterranean tunnel - it is spectacular!
Got as far - in the car - as the jeune train station, maybe slightly above but the road quickly changes into a track and has stop signs 100m up. Assuming that the rest of the zig zag route has to be walked (?) but it was a v hot day (34C) and all uphill. Not this trip, thank you. We were a little sad as the fort looks beautiful, but the surrounding area made up for it. Google showed no other route to the fort, so please feel free to correct me if I went wrong.
Walked up the road and came down the steps as advised by the really helpful woman (who spoke exceptional English - thank you!) selling tickets just after you cross the Yellow train track. The fort is very interesting and the walkways around the outside were okay for me despite my fear of heights/falling (it felt safe!). Highly recommended
So much to see in the village then the ford and the caves give it that extra more to do. Lovely day spend with the family and loads to see and do
Visiting the Fort Libéria exceeded our expectations. Well maintained, renovated fort and well documented paper guide explaining the various secrets of the fort. We took the early way up via the outside walk through bushes and along the rocks. Going down we took the internal escape route with 734 steps. The fort itself has about 400 steps to take so it’s good to consider that. I wouldn’t recommend the tour with dogs or small children. There is a bar and small restaurant inside as well as fee seats to rest a bit.
Very nice fortress. But nite, there are really a lot of stairs, also inside the fort.

Been to Dinopedia for the first time and we had a great time. Experience is amazing for young adventurers interested on dinosaurs. Highly recommend activity to be enjoyed with kids.
Our 4 year old dinosaur fanatic loved it, the figures etc are excellent but the price is expensive for what was a 40 minute visit - we managed to stretch it out this. 15 Euro per adult 12 Euro for our 4 year old. There is a small discount if you buy on line but be sure the place is open before doing so.
Not worth of its money. The boy of 5 was bored.
Fun experience with dinosaurs in a nice cave. A fun experience with kids or to escape the heat.
(Translated by Google) A must-do at least once. Very impressive. I'm taking off one star for the tour duration, which is quite short for the price. But it's still a fun experience. Don't forget sneakers and long pants because it's chilly. On arrival, it was a flat rate of €10 per person.
(Translated by Google) A truly amazing place. The entrance is tiny, and as soon as you walk in, you're in for a real surprise. My 5-year-old daughter really enjoyed herself. And at the end, the filet was a real treat. You have to remember to wrap up warm because it's quite cold.

Beautiful city and breathtaking caves. The walk up to the fort was quite exhausting but we managed to pull through and, Oh but what a magnificient view at the top!! 1000/1000 recommend!! The two gentlemen at the tourism office were very kind and helpful! They recommended us a great restaurant Le Patio in which we have eaten quite well, good local food. Only down point would be that it is very hard to park and sadly, you DO have to walk to get anywhere…
Excellent help from their side, too pity it was at the end of our little stop. We had to really look in order to see it, so it will help a big "I" sign in front of it, as those signs in the village are somehow misleading. But once we got there we had all the information needed for a next trip to this gorgeous medieval village. Thank you!
Very nice, attentive and kind people!
Best team! Always willing to help visitors with transportation, tours, accommodation, etc. Thanks!
