Great viewpoint offering amazing views of the Fajã do Ouvidor and the Ponta do Norte Grande. Definitely worth the stop in nice weather on your way around the island.
Very nice view over the Faja do Ouvidor and also of the other islands
The views are amazing
Wonderful view on the nature of the ocean!
Nice almost bird's-eye view over the Fajã do Ouvidor. Though even better is from the fajã itself just above natural pools and the restaurant from where you can admire the rocky bay.
This place is the best view point for this landmark of the Azores. With view over the Fajã with the Graciosa Island behind it's also the beginning of the hiking trail down to Fajã. A must in São Jorge.
Not one of the best viewpoints.
Amazing view. Better than below, next to the ocean, but I recommend seeing both

Velas is the biggest town of São Jorge island, which is the cheese capital of the Azores! The volcanic formations have created natural beauty that is unlike any other. Make sure to taste some of the cheese. There are a lot to choose from, with them cured for up to 3 years!
A beautiful view on the ocean and Pico island. Must see when you are in São Jorge. It's very close to the center of Velas
Beautiful natural landmark, reminds me of dragon's teeth facing downward j to the sea.
Absotutely stunning. Easy to get to and beautiful.
Nice, they had some lights during the night
Cool natural arc that is easy to visit. Spend 5 minutes here to take some photos.
Beautiful natural stone arch. It's a 5 minute walk from the center of Velas.

Church

Don't be fooled by the inconspicuous exterior. The interior of this 18th century church hides a stunning ornate religious craftwork hardly matched by any other church on the Azores. This is one of the highlights of the São Jorge island so make sure you don't miss this gem during your stay. The entrance fee of €1/p is symbolic at most for what you will be able to admire.
We stoped at many churches on every islands and this one is very special with its decor of copper covered in gold leaf, and it ceiling displaying a boat-like structure. It was free to visit on Sunday, and we had a private guided tour, that we unfortunately didn't fully understand because English is not our first language and the church was echoe.
A very ornate but small church. They charge 1€ to enter and don't allow photography. Worth a stop in the quaint village of Manadas.
Beautiful place, you have to visit this one if you’re on Sao Jorge.
Most richly decorated church in the archipel. The staff gave wonderful explanation when asked questions which helped with getting a personalized experience of the place.
Good place to visit and it nice as well
A really nice old church. It is 1€ per Person to enter the church an 0,50€ if you qualify for a discount (under/ over certain age, working in education, etc.).
Amazing Church, must see

Island

Inhabited island in the Azores archipelago known for its cheese & traditional festivals.
Slide 1 of 8
The island of rocky cliffs, incredible and unusual fãjas, natural pools, lush green forest and meadows. And of course delicious São Jorge cheese (must taste). In some parts of the island the air smells of eucalypto. São Jorge seems unexplored territory. If you have got a drone the aerial view takes yours breath away.
What a beautiful island!! You can still find some wild nature while discovering the "Fajãs" through the pedestrian rails. People are friendly and so nice! When you look to the ocean's horizon it is always interrupted by another island which I find lovely! I just hope the cows and massive tourism won't destroy the island's beauty!
The steepest and most rugged of the central islands. A high central plateau runs the length of the island which is dotted with rugged villages by the sea hundreds of meters below. The Fajã is a mark of the island. Getting to them, an adventure! You will need a car. Bus service is almost non existent and taxis expensive. High season is summer when ex-pats come home. Rentals are very tight. Best activities are some spectacular hikes to places like Fajã dos Cubres or Lagoa da Fajã de Santo Cristo. Ask around for some local eateries throughout the island. Seafood is a must. São Jorge cheese is world-class. Choose Velas at one end if you need a city. Topo at the other for character. The drives in between have spectacular viewpoints.
Fantastic island. One of the lesser populated islands in the Azores but it makes it even better.
The most rugged island of the Azores. Offers great hiking opportunities. Beautiful, green and peaceful. One can easily get away from the main roads and wonder through tracks that cross the entire island. The most beautiful azorean island (with Flores).
São Jorge is an island situated in the central group of the Azores archipelago and part of the autonomous region of Portugal. Separated from its nearest neighbors (Pico and Faial islands) by the 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) Pico-São Jorge Channel, the central group is often referred colloquially as part of the Triangulo (Triangle) group or just "The Triangle". São Jorge is a relatively long thin island with tall cliffs, whose 9500 inhabitants are concentrated on various geological debris fields (fajãs) along the north and south coasts; from east to west, the island is 53 kilometres (33 mi) long and, north to south, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) wide: its area is 237.59 square kilometres (91.73 sq mi).
I am hoping to find others that may be distant relatives of my family. My great grandfather’s parents came from the island of Sao Jorge, Portugal. I hope to have the opportunity someday to visit the island so I can experience being where my family originated from. I live in San Antonio, Texas, USA with my husband and our 2 youngest children. We have 6 beautiful children and 3 beautiful grandkids. Sadly my grandparents have departed from this Earth. They were the people who gave me the little bit of information I was able to get. Now that my kids are starting families of their own they have more questions than I originally did when I was a kid. It has become very important to me that I pass the family genealogy onto my kids so they can keep our families history alive and never forgotten. I don’t want everything my family sacrificed for to have been for nothing. I will list the names of my family back to my great grandparents. I am hoping someone may be able to help provide some insight into our family genealogy. Thank you for your help with this. Amazing day with Jaime! I highly recomment land tours if you wanna see all the best spots of the island. Jaime is also a great photographer !
I was so glad we were able to do this tour. We got delayed on Pico because of a storm, and didn't get to Sao Jorge until noon or so on the day we were to do our tour. I had emailed Jaime, and he said that they could meet us at the ferry and we'd go from there. Nuno met us as arranged, and then adjusted the itinerary so that we were able to see as much as possible in the time we had. He's a terrific guide who took us all over the island, including the cheese cooperative and a small coffee farm (that was a surprise!). He also suggested an excellent restaurant (Sabores Sopranos) for lunch (reviewed separately). Our day was one beautiful view after another, with lots of opportunities for photos, and well worth our time. Highly recommended!
Really enjoyed the van tour with Derek. We saw pretty much the whole island in half day. Sip some local coffee, went to a fajas, and saw a bull running.
Nuno, was an excellent, knowledgeable guide, the tour was very good, highly recommended
(Translated by Google) Tour around the island of São Jorge with Mr Adérito 5* We chose our Intenerario, we had a very good lunch of Seafood Cataplana with a starter of Grilled Limpets, which were delicious, lunch included in the package we purchased. We learned a lot about the Island through the knowledge of Mr Adérito, who always answered all the questions we asked with great friendliness. We were picked up from our accommodation and then took our boat to various beautiful places in the north, including the natural pool "simao dias". Then we anchored in a quiet spot and put on the snorkeling gear. The water and the view of different fish were fantastic! Jamie was also very empathetic, made sure I could go ashore for a moment when I was getting seasick, showed us the limpets that he then harvested and was an all-round great guide! We recommend him 1000%! Best guide on the island! You can also book hiking tours with him.
