So pleased this tower that has so much history was rebuilt to its former glory. As to the hamlet, the vision to restore rooms in the ruins of houses and turn them into a diffused hotel took a lot guts. And now a thriving community has grown from this vision. Fantastic!
This village si so beautiful and well kept. For sure a must visit when traveling in Abruzzo. There are nice little shops and restaurants and also some hotels if you wanna spend the night.
I had a guided tour by a local organization there in September 2024. It was very interesting to learn how they fixed it after the recent earthquacke but most of all I was amazed by discovering the story of this watch tower in medieval times: it was not actually for defensive reasons but to detect sheep thiefs from afar, since ship farming was the main source of income back then.
Beautiful, a very special town with the tower as its centerpiece. Restored magnificently.
(Translated by Google) Faithfully rebuilt after the disastrous earthquake that hit the area in 2009, stone by stone with painstaking work, it also brought to light parts that had been buried over the years. Access is only possible with a free guided tour. Very good at explaining, the guide is local and engaging. Nice visit, absolutely worth making. We also brought children aged 11 and 15 and they remained quietly listening with interest.
(Translated by Google) The Tower is the landmark and symbol of the village. Our guide, Teresa, welcomed us and carefully explained the history of the town. Highly recommended. (Translated by Google) An excellent experience, both culturally and scenically. There was some difficulty (due to internet connectivity issues, which are difficult throughout the village) contacting the number for the guided tour, which takes place approximately every hour, but otherwise it was a wonderful experience. The guide, Jacopo, was very thorough and professional in explaining the history of the Medici Tower, which is actually Aragonese, as well as the history of the village's economy, which had national importance due to the production of Carfagna wool, unique in Italy at the time, which was then processed in Florence. Special mention goes to the guide, who did all this while enduring a wasp sting for over half an hour, which left his finger swollen and painful.

A beautiful abandoned monastery overlooking a beautiful green valley, 30 mins walk from the main road where you have to leave your car. Definitely worth a visit.
(Translated by Google) We took part in the guided tour organized by Orsa Major-Abruzzo Wild, found on the website of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park (very well done website). The route, decidedly simple, started at 7pm from the Racollo lake refuge, walked along the surrounding hills, and then arrived, at dusk, at the ruins. Evocative, magical. When we returned we had dinner at the refuge and then saw the stars with the telescope. Beautiful experience and good guys who organize it (30 euros, well spent!) However, even without the organization, you start from the refuge and, climbing behind it, you overcome the hills and continue up to the ruin that stands out on the horizon. Lots of cows grazing freely and peacefully. It was cold in the evening even though it was late July. I have few photos of the ruin because my attention was evidently absorbed by the surrounding landscape, especially the large horn of the large stone, which towered over us imposingly among the clouds. Bellissimo

Located on the Campo Imperatore plateau, near Santo Stefano di Sessanio, this ancient medieval structure – now in ruins but still full of charm – silently tells the story of the life of the Cistercian monks who settled there in the 13th century. The view is breathtaking: pastures, silence and an open view of the surrounding mountains. The path to get there is suggestive, suitable for hikers with a minimum of training. I recommend starting from the Rifugio Racollo or from the Strada Statale 17 bis and bringing water and sunscreen. Perfect for those looking for an excursion off the usual tourist routes, with the opportunity to reflect immersed in uncontaminated nature and full of historical memory. Not to be missed if you are in the area!

You walk along a path and, as soon as you climb over a small hill, the view opens onto a breathtaking landscape from which you can already glimpse the ruins of the monastery. Once we arrived near the settlement we were overcome by curiosity to see Lake Passaneta which, according to the directions, was 5 minutes away. Once we arrived on the lake we admired the beauty of the landscape and, given the presence of a small refuge, we stopped for lunch. We meet some shepherds who show us, further ahead (about half an hour), another small lake, called Barisciano, so we set off and find a large herd of animals, about 270 animals. Time passes and we quickly retrace our steps and, finally, we arrive at the ruins of the famous Grange of the Cistercian monks, a well-defined structure but with the walls practically disappeared. Very few walls remain with some windows standing, the rest has all gone into ruin and it is about time someone thought about a restoration. However, the landscape is breathtaking, the Gran Sasso from this view is magnificent. We return back arriving at Racollo lake, also worth photographing.
