Always wanted to visit. Didn't disappoint. Magnificent medieval abbey. Part of it is currently covered in scaffolding for restoration, so some areas are cordoned off, which is a bit of a shame, but I was aware of this before going. The scaffolding itself is a feat of engineering. It is quite amazing how huge the windows are or were. Definitely still worth a visit. Nice pub near by. Costs 5 pound to park, but you get this back if you spend money in the Abbey gift shop or the pub.
This is my second time at the Tintern Abbey, the Abbey sits on the border between England and Wales but on the Welsh side. I loved it here both times, this time they also had a trail for children to follow and uncover facts. Highly recommend a visit to Tintern Abbey if you are nearby or even passing through to Wales. With rich history, and amazing views, don't miss out.
I’ve driven past Tintern Abbey countless times over the years, always admiring its setting but never quite stopping - maybe because from the outside, it just looked like a quiet ruin with not much going on inside. But I finally made the visit, and I’m so glad I did. The moment I stepped into the church nave, everything shifted. The soaring arches and the magnificent west front with its seven-light window are breathtaking. It’s hard to believe this place was stripped bare after the dissolution in 1536, left to decay for centuries before being rediscovered by artists and poets like Wordsworth and Turner in the 18th century. You can see why they were drawn to it - the ruins are hauntingly beautiful. For just £9, it’s a deeply worthwhile visit. The abbey’s location in the lush Wye Valley adds to the magic, and there’s a convenient pay-and-display car park plus a pub nearby if you want to make a day of it. If you’ve ever passed it thinking “just another ruin,” I’d say don’t wait as long as I did. It’s far more than that.
A very nice side trip. I'm not sure it is worth travelling a long distance for. There are some nice places to see in the small town. Parking is refunded if you enter the abbey. Tickets were £18 for 2 adults.
A beautiful place to visit with some very interesting history and some significant preservation challenges. It was a weekday afternoon with very few people around which made sitting, in what was the original church hall and the surrounding grounds, and incredibly peaceful experience. There was a lot of scaffolding up and areas cordened off as they fight to save the crumbling building but it is still well worth a visit. A local pub make parking and grabbing a drink afterwards easy
What a wonderful abbey. Well worth a visit and a nice short walk through the village and over the bridge. How on earth did they build such structures so long ago! Must be the power of religion 🤔🤔
Magnificent ruins, quite well interpreted. In a setting that's beautiful even in mid November. The staff are very friendly in the ticket office/shop and also in the tea room. I was glad to congratulate the baker of the cakes in person.
Holidaying in area and was looking for a dog friendly place to visit and as EH members we found we could get into any CADW properties free. Tintern Abbey is a magnificent medieval Abbey. Some of it is covered in scaffolding for restoration, so some areas are cordoned off. It is quite amazing how big the place is or would have been and a feat of engineering. Definitely still worth a visit. Costs £5 to park, but you get this back if you spend money in the gift shop or the pub. Very friendly staff.

Stopped here on the way past and was pleasantly surprised. Great little cafe, zip line , small park & a converted train carriage that shows the history of the line. Easy access to a nice walk along the river bank. Parking was £2.20 for a few hours but everything else was free. If your in the area definitely worth stopping there.
This place is awesome! Lots of history behind it all! And you can enter the train and read all about it! Aswell as that there’s a cafe to get a bite to eat also!
A beautiful area to visit.Nice cafe teas coffee cakes sandwiches and more.Seating in and outside. Car park nearby.
Lovely little park area with an informational display inside the train cars! Cool wooden statues & picnic area. Staff are friendly, there are bathrooms available. The river walk was picturesque. Spent a few hours here and enjoyed it
This is a lovely spot for a relaxing break, especially if you're interested in a bit of history. The restored station buildings and signal box are well-maintained and charming. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the cafe - the bacon sandwiches are particularly noteworthy! They also have plenty of outdoor seating if you prefer a picnic lunch. For families, there's a great play area to keep the little ones entertained. We didn't have time to explore the miniature railway or riverside walk this visit, but they're definitely reasons to come back. We tried several times and every time has different experience.
We love tintern station, it’s a fabulous place. Had lunch here on Sunday, with vegan relatives and they had options for them which was great and for the children. The menu is relatively limited but enough. The toastie was lovely, however £7 for two pieces of white bread, some cheese and ham with a sprinkling of salad on the side is really quite expensive.
Lovely place to go on a gorgeous day!! Took my mum and nephews! It's got an old train, cafe, park for the kids and a flying fox for my mum lols!! You can walk down to the River Wye and there's beautiful views. Also lots to learn about the local history on a video and on boards. The wood carvings are interesting too. Lovely couple of hours yo be had.
A beautiful location in the Wye valley. Great food and drinks in the old station building. Lots of picnic tables, a good play area for kids, access to Wye valley walks, interesting old station buildings and carriages. A large car park which gets very busy during sunny weekends.

If you want one of the best views of Tintern, abbey, wye, etc then visit the vineyard. Yes you pay 2.50 but you’re helping a small business + the views:)The sparkling wine was our go to before the walk up and it surprising to see the wide variety of grapes grown onsite.
Loved our visit to the vineyard ,the current owners have done a fantastic job in restoring it back to it's former glory a true labor of love ,a really interesting tour and and a bit of the history of the vineyard by the lovely owner, purchased a bottle of their award winning white wine to open on a special occasion, please be aware if you have walking difficulties as the tour is a very steep climb .
A great little vineyard run by a lovely couple. The wine selection is very good as are the jams.
It was lovely. Nice wine and gentlemen told us the story of the vineyard :)
Beautiful sunny day with wonderful views from the top of the hill. Great to see all the different grape varieties growing there. Really nice wines too. Reasonably priced and with an excellent host to explain and converse with. Will go again when my 20 odd bottles run out😎
Collins is a great host, be prepared to walk a very steep vineyard
Amazing view of the river Wye, with Tintern in the distance. Bought some bubbles too.
No charge for a self guided, interesting little walk through the vines. It's a steep climb to the top, especially on a hot day but there is lots of info provided about the vines and other interesting facts. After our walk we were offered some free tastings of the wines produced at Parva and bought some delicious wine to bring home. Dogs welcome.

Beautiful church on the circular walk along the river. Made even more special as my Great Grandad married his first wife here
Lovely church along the walk from the old station to Tintern Abbey. Dog friendly which was great as my pooch enjoyed the cool stone floor on a warm day! Tea and coffee is available, kettle provided and donations welcomed which I thought was generous and welcoming. Enjoyed our lunch in the churchyard before mosying along.
Pretty little church on the river Wye, just north of Tintern village.

Quite literally my favourite shop in the entire world! Every single item is absolutely beautiful, the shop smells amazing! The lady we spoke to was so so friendly and welcoming....and patient with me taking ages!!! :) I don't live close by but will absolutely be visiting again!!! Love my items :) xx Would like to add I was very impressed with the prices!! :)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This little shop is such a special place — full of charm, creativity, and genuine heart. The team are always so kind, welcoming, and clearly passionate about supporting local makers and creating a lovely experience for everyone who walks through the door. It’s the kind of shop where you end up having the nicest chats, discovering something unique, and leaving with a smile (and probably a beautiful handmade treat or two!). It’s a true gem in the community and exactly the kind of place we need more of. Thoughtful, inspiring, and run by people who really care. 💛
Such a fantastic shop, full of wonderful hand made items. Definitely puts you in touch with nature. One of the reasons we visited this area was to see Kathleen's shop as we already have a green man plaque and dragon. Came away with more items and had a long chat with Kathleen, who is so friendly.
Just taken delivery of my items from Spirit of the Green Man, they are Christmas presents for friends. I have ordered several Green Men and wall plaques over the past few years and the quality and workmanship is always outstanding. Each sculpture feels unique and special. I think if we lived close by to the shop we would be there every week :) xx
Awful, rude and unhelpful man. Think he must have been having a very bad day, or he’s in the wrong job! We were really upset by his attitude so we left without buying all the gifts we planned to take back NZ.
Absolutely wonderful!! We spent a fortune...but worth every penny, for the unique, quality and meaningful items. If you are spiritually minded or not, no matter, the little shop is crammed full of a positive energy....food for the soul ❤️❤️
Absolutely love my Green Man plaque, which came today, securely packaged. Impressive quality and finish, clearly made with intention and care. Thank you!
Lovely shop absolutely crammed with witchy, fairy, pagan goodies. I could have spent a month's wages.

Just a few minutes walk from Tintern Abbey, but it is all uphill. You will need a map to find it aa there is no signage. The church has been abandoned since the 1970s due to a fire. Breathtaking views, bluebell wood and a feeling of being taken back in time. Well worth the climb.
Beautiful remains of a burned out church nestled in peaceful woodland above Tintern Abbey. Photogenic location and some very interesting graves that are worth investigating as to the story behind those who lay in them.
Superb, amazing old church monastery, more or less 1000 years old when one was first established, amazing views from the top. Not to be missed travelling in that part of Wales. Of course the big attraction is the big abbey monastery of Tintern, but this St Mary's church was the prodromos (forerunner ) of the abbey. Can be found exactly opposite the abbey, up the hill/ footpath.(Ask the friendly people in the Tintern Abbey shop).
Fabulous old ruined church just a short walk away from Tintern Abbey. Well worth the uphill walk to see the church and views back towards the village.
Up a steep hill, buried in the overgrowth, is the ruined little church of St Mary's. Couldn't be more romantically ruined if it tried. Totally gorgeous. But beware - this is NOT suitable for children, the walls are likely to fall down VERY soon, and there is a large drop into the crypt as the floor has gone in that area. Lovely overgrown churchyard too.
A truly historical place that I personally found more interesting than the Abbey. A little overgrown when we visited but as its a little further away from the tourist area, we were left to explore and enjoy the history. Made me think does anyone maintain the graveyard anymore. Well worth a visit 👍
Really nice ruin. Certainly worth the climb up from Abbey car park. Saw 1 person in the hour I spent taking photos here so nice and chilled with cracking views over Tintern and the Abbey. Highly recommend a visit.
The Church of St Mary the Virgin in Tintern. A really interesting, eerie place to visit. Worth the short steep climb up the hill path, with some great views over Tintern to boot ☺
