Archaeological site with 4000+ years of human settlement remains from Neolithic to medieval times.
Slide 1 of 8
This interesting archaeological site is located on the coast at Sumburgh Head. There you will find intriguing evidence of human occupation spanning the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Norse, Medieval and recent periods. Artefacts recovered from the site can be seen at the Lerwick Museum. The interpretation centre at Jarlshof has a nice selection of books. Well worth a visit. 👍👍👍
Amazing place near a main Hotel and Sumburgh Airport (Shetlands main airport). All about 35 mins south of Lerwick by car. You receive a handset with recorded tour guide. The buildings are from different time periods up to medieval. I read that it is bigger than Orkney's neolithic site at Scarpa Flow. It's about 9 pound entry. Expect to be there 1 to 2 hrs.
The whole purpose of the days excursion was to visit Jarlshof. Reportedly unique in that a number of ruins from different eras exist on the same site, yet they were not built on top of each other (as is normal) nor did they steal stones from each other. From Roman Brochs to Viking Longhouses, Farms, Ancient huts/houses, a smithy, a partial Wheelhouse, and some sort of keep/lairds House, this site has many different things to wonder at. I loved the visit, although due to our tour composition picture taking was hard and hearing our guide even harder amongst our slow moving 'tourist herd'. Looking at the stone walls, it's hard to imagine what life would have been like (other than cold). I understand that there are better preserved ruins, castles and so on across Scotland and the UK, but this one had ones that spanned millennia. One of the best excursions yet.
This is a world class site for anyone even vaguely interested in ancient history. Even those who are not should come for the location and may be have their interest picqued. The museum and gift shop are modern and stylish. It is comparable in scale and importance to Scara Brae but in addition has Pictish and medieval components.
Amazing place with friendly staff. I highly recommend using the audio guide as it explains the history of the site very well. Only downside is no toilets on site.
This place is amazing. In addition to being a unique historical site, it's beautiful. The audio guided tour is excellent. The staff is very helpful. We took the #6 bus from Lerwick. It was a beautiful ride.
Great example of the prehistoric villages on Shetland and Orkney. Fascinating to experience walking into houses and imagining how our ancestors lived. They were tough people!
Absolutely fascinating. It’s hard to wrap your mind around just how old this site is. Respectfully maintained and promoted. Highly recommend.

Great spot to see the puffins! We visited on May 7 2025 and took the bus from the cruise port to the Sumburgh Hotel and walked up. If you don't want to walk that far then you need a car or bus tour. But we enjoyed the walk up because we saw Shetland Ponies and lambs on the walk. The lighthouse is also nice. They have free areas and some paid areas. There is a nice restroom that is dependent on tips only so make sure to leave a good tip, it's a very nice thing to have available. We loved it all!
The views from here are spectacular. There's a lighthouse museum, a lot of information around from the RSPB regarding local birds and some of the most breathtaking ocean pictures you could get. It is a very steep walk though, and the nearest disabled parking is still quite a trek up - recommend bringing sticks/aids if you need them! There is seating on the walkway where you can rest!
Didn't visit the Lighthouse chose to spend time outside and then in the visitors centre. Stunning views with quite a few seabirds flying around. Birdwatchers paradise especially earlier in the year (we visited September) when a lot more varieties are around especially Puffins . Hot drinks and snacks by donation
An absolutely worthwhile place with spectacular views and lots of history. The lighthouse is impressively located on the cliffs at the southernmost point of the Shetland mainland. Especially worth mentioning is the very well-designed exhibition in the Visitor Centre (Observatory) – informative, engaging, and full of fascinating insights into the lives of lighthouse keepers and the history of the site. Another highlight is the impressive bird colony right on the cliffs. Especially during the breeding season, you can observe many seabirds like puffins up close. Nature, wildlife, and history – all in one place. Highly recommended.
A place where nature softly speaks, Waves sing, and seabirds call. The ocean hums, the silence breaks— We saw a puffin, proud and small. So lovely, wild, and full of grace, A gentle joy in nature’s face.
The highlight of my Shetland visit, this Isa wonderful place. The views are spectacular and even in September there were plenty of birds to watch. A truly knowledgeable guy in the lookout gave me amazing insights into the birds' behaviours and their lives. The museum is excellent with fascinating histories and stories of the lighthouse. The staff who work there are a delight. The whole thing is volunteer supported. I could spend days there
Take a excursion or taxi here or go on your own if you are with a car. What an amazing sight and we were very lucky to spot Puffins!! The "cafe" works on donations, seemed a bit strange, but it works!
Wonderful walks from Sumburgh gate bus stop, wonderful scenery birdlife astounding .Exceptional cafe at the lighthouse with amazing views. The cafe has wonderful choice of coffee, tea and cakes and is by donations so please give generously

This museum is a great place to get some history of the Shetland islands. The mills history is fascinating and if you get the chance to watch the video made of this history and the remaking of the mill it is awesome! Make sure to walk all around as there are some hidden gems in some off to the side rooms 😄
Excellent place to visit not to be mussed.very informative and friendly staff.excellent exhibits all at reasonable price.came away really happy with everything
Very friendly and educational lots of history of the mill and you get to walk round all of it friendly gift shop toilets parking
Small museum covering a number of topics. 2 good videos, 1 about how the mill works and the other about the 1993 oil spill and its implications.
Such a lovely museum, informative, friendly staff and a lovely craft shop
Absolutely bananas! You receive a very warm welcome from the guide. The mill itself is amazing. Shame the wheel isn't working/turning, it's history is played out in a 10 minute video and then you have a paper guide to take you round each room. As well as mill machinery you have coins and notes from around the world, a collection of miniature tractors and other vehicles - including a Ferrari - local bird information, and a jigsaw puzzle of a mill in a frame. Completely brilliant. The gift shop is lovely and has locally hand made Shetland wool hats and gloves for adults and kids at a fraction of the price anywhere else and so beautifully and skilfully made. Highly recommend a stop here as it has charitable status and runs on donations and grants.
Great visitor experience in south mainland. Beautifully restored 19th century water mill, Shetland's largest (of four) housing local history displays with relics of the 'Oceanic' but the emphasis obviously on milling, including the drying kiln and the automated threshing and milling machinery. Friendly curator and s very good gift shop with local crafts.
Lovingly restored watermill with interesting exhibition, video presentation and shop. Well worth seeking out, but check opening hours.

Fascinating site with excellent guided tours Old Scatness Broch is an incredible archaeological site that really comes to life with the guided tour. The guide Steve was very passionate, knowledgeable, and brought the Iron Age settlement to life with fascinating stories and insights. You get a real sense of how people lived here over 2,000 years ago. The site is well-preserved and beautifully located – a hidden gem for history lovers. Don’t miss the tour – it makes all the difference!
This looks like a great place to visit, but was closed when we were there. You can walk around the outside and get some nice pictures however. Shame it was not open considering it was a Saturday.
The guides are super knowledgeable. This place is a treasure, and the guides are all archeologists. You learn so much!
Less extant than the broch in Lerwick, but it’s interesting as an archaeological site. The reconstructed house there is excellent (with an actual peat fire). The staff are really lovely !
Wonderful place to visit if you, like myself, are curious about the Shetland islands’ most interesting past. A worthwhile visit for anyone visiting the Shetlands.
We went on a Friday as advertised as being open and went at the time a tour was meant to start but it was closed. We couldn’t book as the website doesn’t allow bookings on the day. The phone number puts you through to the museum in Lerwick who also didn’t know if it was open or not. I wouldn’t recommend just turning up even on a Friday, looks like you have to prebook.
Amazing Iron Age village and partially exposed broch. I recommend visiting here and the nearly Jarlshof together for a broad view of the early dwellings here.
Only open on Fridays but great as we walked round the outside
