Ahungalla Beach, located on the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, is a tranquil and less commercialized beach destination, ideal for those seeking a peaceful getaway. Ahungalla Beach is an excellent choice for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of more tourist-heavy destinations while still enjoying the natural beauty and charm of Sri Lanka's coastline.
I sought solace at the beach, armed with my camera. From the golden hour to the fiery sunset, I was immersed in the tranquility of Ahungalla. Even amidst the playful shrieks of children chasing the waves, there was an unmatched serenity. Let me paint you a picture with words of the profound experience I had while capturing life on this stunning coastline. In the heart of the Indian Ocean, a majestic wave crashed onto the shores of Sri Lanka. With grandeur, it broke upon the golden sands, then retreated gently. The turquoise hues of the ocean sparkled under the sun, and tiny white bubbles danced like diamonds on the water’s surface. The rhythmic lapping of waves was a soothing melody that calmed my soul. A gentle breeze carried the scent of the sea and the sandy shore, enveloping me in nature’s embrace. In that moment, I felt a profound connection to the universe, as if all my worries had been washed away by the ocean's tide. Life pulsated within this crashing wave. Fish darted through the water, birds soared through the sky, and plants thrived on the shore. Everything was in perfect harmony. This sight reminded me of the immense power and beauty of nature. As humans, we are but tiny specks in this vast universe, yet we can find solace and inspiration in its wonders. The Indian Ocean, like a sparkling jewel, was set against the canvas of a setting sun. The gentle, rhythmic waves danced gracefully across the golden sands. A soft, golden glow illuminated the horizon, as if the sun were bidding farewell to the day, painting the sky with warm and inviting hues. A towering palm tree stood guard over the beach, its long, slender leaves providing shade. Its silhouette cast against the sand created a surreal scene. The gentle breeze rustled through the palm fronds, as if the tree were dancing in harmony with nature. The sky, adorned with fluffy, colorful clouds, added to the beauty of the scene. It was as if an artist had painted a masterpiece on the celestial canvas. The warm and cool colors blended together, creating a breathtaking vista. As I returned to my daily life, the memory of this beautiful scene remained with me. It served as a reminder that amidst the hustle and bustle, there is always beauty to be found, and moments of tranquility to be cherished.
We are staying three nights at Jungle Beach Camp, about 1/3 of the way down this pristine beach. It’s the only proper beach bar on the strip, although there are a few hotels which we might have visited for food if we were here longer. The sand is fine and golden, and there are a few fishing boats that set out their nets in the morning… so a good catch could be fresh on your table that night. There’s a road parallel to the beach with a fair few shops to the Northern end. It’s a little slice of paradise, and the only reason for knocking off a star is it would be ace to have some sun shade umbrellas on the bar tables… especially in the afternoon when the west-facing shoreline offers no natural shade.
Animal abuse, someone has a pet monkey here and he makes it perform tricks for humans. Saw him force it to high give a kid. Its disgusting behaviour and if you indulge this you should be ashamed of yourself
Very good sand, but waves too hard...
Very clean and safety place. Very good place to sea swim and sun bathing.
That’s the best beach in south eastern area . Yes there are some waves , but you can manage it. It’s super clean , lovely and endless . We travelled from east to south and were lucky to stay at most of the key touristic spots and beaches , but I’m definitely in love with Ahungalla beach
Make no mistake, it is a gorgeous tropical beach with a mild surf, the rating comes from the rude, pushy locals on the beach constantly trying to scam you with lies and deceit. The ahungalla beach tourist guides are some of the worst here, they will shout at you and make accusations if you try to ignore them, God help you if you actually talk to them, take a trip and prepare to visit a friends shop or tea room on the way and pay about twice what flagging one on the street would charge. One guy walks up and down the beach and no matter where you stand it is on his 'property' but he doesn't mind you using it if you visit his gem shop, others tout for the shops with lies, tuktuk drivers on the min road will follow you up the road slowly. These people shame sri lanka.

The tour was very nice. My favourite part was the boat trip on the river and the turtle farm. The driver of the boat was amazing. He spotted the animals everywhere, which were well camouflaged in the trees and in the water. I saw bats, kingfishers, chameleons, crocodiles, snakes and much more. The turtle farm is located on a beautiful beach. The guide and driver Rohan was very helpful and courteous and always catered to my wishes. He shared a lot of knowledge about the history of the places we saw and answered every question. I felt very safe as a woman travelling alone. Rohan has a pleasant and funny manner and the trip was never boring. I can recommend him with a clear conscience.
After the fantastic cooking class that Vinodh from VTS organised for us we had no hesitation in booking a 2 day tour and Safari at Yala National Park. We had a very clean and modern minivan for our family and great driver Domindu to take care of us for the 2 days. We stopped off along the way for sightseeing and lunch with Domindu pointing out lots of interesting places and facts. We had a great overnight stay and got off to an early start with the Safari in our own jeep. I’d highly recommend VTS to take care of you on any trip or activity whilst staying in Bentota.
I had an unforgettable wildlife safari in Yala National Park with VTS Lanka Tours. The booking process was smooth, and their customer service was excellent. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate, making the experience truly enriching. We saw a variety of wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and crocodiles, and the park's landscapes were stunning. I highly recommend VTS Lanka Tours for an exceptional wildlife adventure in Sri Lanka!
Sri Lanka is a fantastic country with friendly and wonderful people! I always long to go back there.
Good beach. Absolute clean. Infact whole Sri Lanka is clean.
Our experience with VTS Lanka Tours was fantastic! We had a driver (Rohan) for two weeks while we traveled around Sri Lanka. Rohan was very knowledgeable and a safe driver. Highly recommend!
Booked our driver to the airport with them. Very fast, reliable, and friendly service. Had a confirmation of the booking by e-mail within minutes. The driver showed up on time (even early), with a new comfortable vehicle. He was very nice and drove us safely (not a given on Sri Lankan roads!) to the airport. Would book again with them any time. Thank you!
Thank you Rohan for an unforgettable, lovely day. He kept us safe and sound all day, providing great knowledge and excellent driving! Would definitely recommend Rohan though VTS to fellow Australians.

We only used the restaurant. We ordered regional dishes. The food turned out to be very tasty and affordable. The beer was not too cheap, but very good, I don't like beer but I recommend it. The restaurant was quiet maybe because we were there at the beginning of the season. The service was very nice, the Sri Lankans are super nice people. I recommend a visit to this great island.
My partner and I used the River Safari services here today (Monday - June 9, 2025). The ride was absolutely surreal on the Madu Ganga River and Lake near Balapitiya in southern Sri Lanka. There were multiple stops and we also saw the place where the river meets the Indian Ocean. The boatman was rather kind and we had a brilliant time figuring out the flora and fauna of the region. While the ride was fantastic, I also need to put something on record here. When we were brought to the restaurant by our driver Pradeep, we were asked to pay $40 each thus amounting to $80 for both us. It was way beyond what was specified in the itinerary that our travel agent provided us. We, thus, immediately contacted our travel agent and voila the price came down to $20 each amounting to $40 for the two of us. While we paid the money, we never received a payment receipt despite reminding the people in charge. Accountability and transparency go a long way in furthering businesses. This was not desirable under any circumstances. Folks, please take this feedback seriously and pull up your socks!
I enjoyed the boat ride, fish therapy, and the Cinnamon Village demonstration. Safety precautions were well maintained, making the experience both enjoyable and comfortable.
great spot if you’re looking for tasty food and a fun boat ride. The restaurant has a calm and relaxing vibe, and the staff is friendly and helpful. The food is delicious, which is a must-try. The portions are big, and everything feels fresh and well-cooked. The boat ride is the best part—it’s peaceful, with beautiful views of [lake/river]. It’s perfect for a day out with family or friends. Overall, offers good food and a unique experience. Definitely worth a visit!
The restaurant was empty when we arrived (first sign). The food was terrible. I had deviled beef and it was the mildest meal I had in Sri Lanka. It took over 5 minutes to receive the bill with an empty restaurant. They even had the cheek to try ask us if we wanted to boat safari after returning full plates.
Avoid this for food. They are focused on drinks and very slow in preparing and serving food. Very bad service. The person taking orders will never turn up after taking orders. The person serving will forget few items and they never respond properly.
Our experience at mangrove cave restaurant was quite disappointing we ordered Crab, oyester, and mutton pot biryani The biryani has no pieces of mutton found in it all it has is skin and waste pieces and the crab tasted good but the restaurant is quite expensive The drivers get some incentive(free food) here that's why they bring you to this restaurant
Amazing food! People are very kind and the locations is well preserved! I recommend this place.

We visited the Ahungalla Sea Turtle Conservation Project based on a recommendation from a nearby hotel, and it turned out to be a truly memorable experience, specially for our 4 year old son who has been eager to learn about turtles. The place is beautifully constructed, with a design clearly inspired by turtles and marine life. It’s not just visually appealing but also thoughtfully organized. The guides were excellent friendly, knowledgeable, and able to explain everything about the turtles’ life cycle and the conservation efforts in a way that was easy to understand, even for kids. We were particularly impressed by the dedicated treatment units for injured turtles and the presence of medical staff on site. It's clear that they are genuinely committed to protecting and rehabilitating these wonderful creatures. A great initiative that deserves support we wish this project continued growth and success!
Not sure about the non profit tag. We were asked to pay LKR 2000 per head excluding children who get to visit for free. Not wheelchair friendly. Got to see a doctor treating a turtle for some infection. Parking is available at the entrance. There's a shop selling souvenirs, best to skip that as they charge exorbitant prices.
The **Ahungalla Sea Turtles Conservation Project** is a small but impactful conservation center dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles. Visitors can learn about turtle conservation efforts, see baby turtles, and even watch them being released into the ocean. The staff is passionate and knowledgeable, making it a meaningful stop for eco-conscious travelers. A heartwarming experience for nature lovers!
Ahm.. most likely a scam. They'll charge you 2000 or 3000 per ticket based the on the colour of your skin, your appearance and mostly on the understanding that your driver/guide has with them. The piece of paper (read ticket) conveniently does not mention any price on it. They have a story line for every turtle there which I really hope is true. If I give them the benefit of the doubt entirely, including (especially) the fact that the tragic outcomes to the resident turtles are not manipulated, they're doing a decent job rehabilitating them. They will at one point walk you to a donation box and stare at you till you're uncomfortable while mentioning that they are government licensed, but not supported, and that your donation (don't mention the overcharged tickets) makes all the difference. They will do this to you again once they've finished the script and ask you if you were happy with the service intending that it's your 'responsibility' to make him happy (don't mention the overcharged tickets)(again). Then he'll take you to the advertisement of their "new" cafe. Overall, forgive my sarcasm from earlier, as much as I love animals and would have loved to walk away from their feelings that their truly making a difference, i felt exploited while after walking out of an aquarium of exploited animals. PS : that second star is purely wishful thinking that someone in the background is truly trying to save a life or two.
Nice place to visit for explore turtle varieties. We received demo on each display by their team member & it is very useful. Moreover they have aquarium with fish varieties to explore. Recommended to visit for turtle conservation center available in this area.
My partner and I had an amazing experience at this place today (Monday - June 9, 2025). It is located at Ahungalla along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. We were almost introduced to the world of turtles and tortoises from the scratch. We also had some sort of an introduction to a few special fishes at the aquarium. However, let me point out something very important. These people follow a very shady payment procedure. Different rates are quoted for different tourists. Most importantly, no tickets were issued to us. We were charged 4,000.00/- LKR each. Thus, we dished out 8,000.00/- LKR in total. It is rather unfortunate that an organization that boasts of ethical practices are resorting to such heinous means in the name of money. Folks, please buck up!
If not planned you have probably landed here because your driver has some kind of set up with the guys. Prices charged can be anything that they wish for. 4500 LKR for adults from SAARC nations else it was quoted as 6000. Not arguing that they may not be doing a good job but charges are just not justified esp when they ask for separate donations. Few varieties of fish can be seen which is nothing extraordinary. 30 mins is max that can be spent, did not feel the worth.
Kids were happy to see turtles. And the lil hatchling. But the time for their release is 6pm which i we ware not aware of. So missed it bag way.

Based on amazing family feedback my partner and I booked 2 separate day tours with Tony and his team a few months before coming to Sri Lanka. Each day was completely custom to what we wanted to see with a few added recommendations. What wonderful experiences! Our first day was a trip to Sigiriya Rock & Dambulla Cave Temple with a stop at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Throughout the entire day our guide and driver were nothing but accommodating, not only educating us on the history of each main area but all areas on the way. They only showed us to the best spots for food and would even stop to go and get us things like fresh fruit grown locally for us to try. Our second day was a trip to Ella to see the Nine Arches Bridge, Mini Adams Peak and Ravana Falls. Again, we had such an amazing, fun filled day. Throughout both days our guides and drivers went above and beyond to give us the best time possible. We want to thank Tony and the team for being so accommodating and kind. We will definitely be booking more when returning to Sri Lanka in the future!
We contacted Tony before leaving the UK, communication was very clear via messenger. Tony got back to us very quickly with a list of trips he offered. We chose the two day trip to Udawalawe National park & the Ella train trip. And also the Galle trip. This was not to disappoint. Tonys knowledge was brilliant across the whole trip. He also took us to some amazing spots for lunch, with spectacular views. The taxi driver was great too, and would stop off if need too if we wanted to stop for photos. We would definitely recommend these trips to anyone who is visiting Sri Lanka.
What amazing experiences Tony gave us. The two day Ella and safari trip was jam packed with wonderful sights and activities and the Galle and river safari was a full day of wonderful things. Releasing baby turtles into the sea was a highlight. Tony is the kindest and most knowledgeable man who could answer any question we had about Sri Lankan history, Buddhism, tea production , the tsunami and much more. Superb value for money - he has made our trip so special by sharing such amazing parts of his island with us . Highly recommend this tour guide - the best!
We have just returned from Sri Lanka having done 2 tours with this company. The communication before the tours was great and the prices very reasonable. They were very punctual when collecting us from our hotel and both the guide and the drivers were excellent. We will definitely use them again when returning to the area.
We have just got back from our first excursion booked via WhatsApp with Tony a few weeks before travelling. A slightly anxious traveller, Tony was excellent at answering all my questions and reassuring me. Tony’s dad picked us up at the hotel and was early to meet us. He was polite and very knowledgeable, he constantly checked that myself, two teenage children and husband were well catered for. We did the Bentota River Safari this morning, Tony Senior and the boat guide had lots of knowledge, made jokes and chatted all the way through the trip. It was a really relaxed atmosphere and nothing felt rushed. Again, all through the trip Tony senior checked we were well and happy. We had a wonderful time and are booked in next week to do more trips!!!!
Tony was a great and informative guide with so much knowledge. Ella and Udawalawa tour was amazing. Trip to Galle included turtle sanctuary, river safari, fisherman on poles, the Dutch Fort and a bonus visit to Galle Cricket Club. Cannot recommend Tony highly enough.
We arranged two tours via Tony before leaving the UK. Tony was very quick to reply to any questions. Both our tours were very well organised. My husband, 3 sons, and I absolutely loved the experiences and will remember them for a lifetime. Tony was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and kind. We would highly recommend 👌
Thank you Rushan and Kira. We had a wonderful two trips with you both. Galle Day Tour- such an introduction to Sri Lankan history, cultur and conservation. Udawalawe Safari - once in a life time experience. Tony tours - efficient communications, good value for money, great guides and drivers. (Trips booked from UK before holiday. All communications excellent and prompt via email)

Had an amazing 90 minute deep tissue massage with Iresha - she is very skilled at finding muscle tension and stiffness. Everything went smoothly from the initial WhatsApp correspondence to the Tuk Tuk pick up and greeting on arrival. I would say that this was one of the best massages that I have ever had! Thank you!
The staff that welcomes you are very friendly, but the language barrier is a lot, to the point of not being able to get the correct price of the massage and ended up paying extra. I came the next day with a friend, but I don’t think the price is fair comparing to other places.
A fantastic family owned massage place. It was easy to book via messenger - they are very responsive. We were picked up from our hotel free of charge and brought back after the massage and a bit of shopping. The massages were amazing. I recommend the full body massage, it's very relaxing. Overall, I'm very pleased with this experience.
My wife and I had an Ayurveda massage and really enjoyed it. we perceived their professionalism in performing the massage. we recommend it!
I enjoyed a couple of relaxing massages which complemented my holidays in Ahungalla. The bamboo massage place is a bit hidden but really recommendable. The therapists are professional and react to your individual needs. Thank you so much bamboo massage team. You contributed very well to my wonderful stay in Ahungalla, Sri Lanka.
Shiran picked us up at the hotel and took us to the massage center. it was a simple house with 2 massage tables. Samanthi massages wonderfully, as does her colleague whose name we have forgotten. After the massage, Shiran brought us back to the hotel. on the way we stopped at various shops because we still wanted to shop. we went to the massage 3 times and on the third day we also got a Discount!
One of the best massages you'll ever experience.. - No kidding. Very friendly and professional staff. Me and my wife had an ayurveda relaxation massage and it was heavenly.
4 of us enjoyed 2 lovely massages Inc sports injury and pregnancy massage. Collected us by tuk tuk from our hotel (Rui) such lovely friendly people and fantastic massage. A quarter of the price less than the hotel was charging and a great experience. Thank you!

I booked Madu Boat Safari trip with Suduhansa Tours. It was a great experience for me and I enjoyed the boat ride, plantations, prawn fishing and local fishermen fishing, Fish pedicure, cinnamon farm.and the monastery on one of the island. We also stopped to have King Coconut and Ice cream from one of the shops on stilts in the river. This was owned by Ravindu’s parents and his mother was there to sell us what we wanted. I did not see any crocodiles during my trip. I guess they were underwater. Overall I enjoyed my boat ride of approximately 2.5 hours with Ravindu’s father who rode the boat for us.
Very good travel agent. I stayed Riu Sri Lanka hotel
An amazing safari with the owner of Suduhansa Tours, Sameera
My friend and I hired Sameera for a 4 day trip from Arguam Bay thru Ella > Kandy > Nuwaraeliya > Dambulla > Sigiriya > back down to Hirikiteya. A huge trek covering tons of distance in a short time because we wanted to see the sights and experience the culture and temples of the Central province but also not miss the swell in the South. Sameera was amazing! Great driver, good English, helpful, and had great recommendations for tea plantations and spice gardens. He was extremely thoughtful and helped us buy our train tickets and even waited for us to make sure we got on the right train. Such a kind, kind, human being. The car was clean and fully loaded with WiFi and even TV monitors. Would def recommend for day trips or longer and even for airport pickup which we also used.
