I am shocked that this place doesn’t have more reviews! If you are driving from France to Switzerland (especially in the summer without air conditioning in the car), definitely take a detour to this place! The 9 kids in our small school group (aged 4 to 13) all loved it - not just because it’s nice and cold, but because you get to learn how limestone blocks used to be extracted to make many of the large buildings and monuments in France. There are also tables just outside the entrance (still nice and cool there) to enjoy a picnic lunch afterwards. The pictures don’t do this place justice. It’s spacious with a lot to see. The signs are in French, but there is a laminated English guide you can ask for at the entrance. If you are anywhere even remotely in the area, you should visit. Especially if you have kids!
Bigger than expected. Tha trouble with phone app. Some lovely work br masons.
The underground limestone quarry of Aubigny (France) has been in use for over 2000 years. Its stone has been used in many buildings throughout France and especially Paris, most notably the Town Hall, the Conservatory of Arts and Crafts, the pillars of the Eiffel Tower, and the Opéra Garnier. The extraction of all this limestone has created huge underground vaults. Today, it is open for the general public, and it is a place where artists gather to carve out their creations and to teach their craft to their pupils. We were in the neighborhood of this quarry in the summer of 2018, when there was a heatwave in France with temperatures in the upper 30's Celcius (100 F). Since the temperature inside the quarry is a constant 12 degrees C (53 F), we went for a visit to give us a possibility to cool off. While the cool temperature was very welcome, and even became a bit chilly after half an hour or so, the quarry itself was very exciting as well. The history that is explained of how the big blocks were hacked out of the walls with just hand tools is very interesting, and knowing the limited tools that were used makes the size of these underground caves even more impressive. Also seeing the black spots on the ceiling that were caused by the smoke of oil lamps or torches. It feels like you're stepping back in time. And to top it all of, there's a 10-second echo-reverb in the quarry... just try to sing a song for a very cool effect. So all in all, highly recommended. Especially on hot days :-)
Very interesting underground quarry, which is a small museum about the underground exploitation of limestone. Would totally recommended.
We went twice, first for a visit which was breathtaking, with many artistic carvings from top artisans, students and artists. The underground does not seem to finish. We came back two days later for a course on stone carving. My two kids ( 5 and 6 years old) were so excited when they arrived and became so focused during two hours of hard work. Our mentor, Frederic, was extremely patient, enthusiastic, helpful, creative , that was pure pleasure : learning by doing on site!
Amazing experience! Beautiful location with impassioned tour guides. Stone graving workshop was really interesting and fun.
Loved this, it’s almost like a cathedral
