A Truly Remarkable Place – Thoughtfully Designed and Full of Heart The memorial site left a deep impression on me – I’ve rarely seen a place so incredibly well maintained. It felt like you could eat off the floor! The entire area is beautifully embedded in nature, and even the walkways themselves feel like part of the experience. The memorial is designed with a sense of elegance and modernity, without ever feeling artificial or overdone. On the contrary, it’s both refined and respectful. The integration of water elements is particularly well done and adds to the serene atmosphere in a meaningful way. In short: this site is unique and absolutely worth visiting. But as we all know, the best is often saved for last. Every member of the staff we encountered was kind, dedicated, and clearly passionate about their role. Thank you so much for your commitment and presence! I would especially like to mention one remarkable staff member in the small museum behind the gift shop. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch her name, but she truly made a lasting impact on my visit. She explained the exhibits and background stories with such clarity, enthusiasm, and depth – and in a way that was perfectly adapted to my language level (I’m not a native speaker). What touched me even more was how warmly and naturally she welcomed my young daughter as well. I was truly impressed. Her warmth and passion genuinely made my day!
Stopped here on our way through town. Good decision to stop. What a well put together memorial. The grounds are kept up so beautifully. Everybody, from the ticket booth rep to the museum host, was super nice. LOTS to read if you're into that.
This is truly a visceral experience. I suspect if you've been in naval warfare the sounds will trigger some difficult memories. Where you see the headphone zone signs, that's where you will want to be prepared. Though the signs are intentionally for sensory disabilities, it would be good to have some noise-canceling headphones for PTSD, too. Overall, though, easily the best memorial there is. The experience is immersive, and you can feel the weight of that day on your shoulders. I'll never know what that was like then, and my family that was alive then is no longer around, so I can't follow up and ask the tough questions. But, I think I felt some of it there. Well done. The panorama photo shows the entirey of the list of names. The left HALF is all U.S. casualties. The right have is the rest of the Allies.
Breathtaking memorial to the great generation from WW2 who fought at D-Day. Words and pictures do not do this amazing place justice. The volunteer guides do an incredible job bringing the history of D-Day alive. Plan to spend around two hours at the site to take a tour and explore the exhibits and gift shop.
Excellent Memorial! The tour was fantastic and our guide was very knowledgeable about every aspect of the park. He was also a wonderful story teller and I feel like I learned a lot while I was there. He also took plenty of time to answer questions at the different stops on the tour!
When you go make sure that you take the free tour. It is so interesting and informative. My WWII history buff husband found out things he didn't know. This is something everyone should experience. This is a privately funded memorial with no government involvement so they run on solely on people who visit and donations. **Side note if you are on a tour with a group of adults who you don't know and you have your kiddos with you, be respectful of the rest of the people on the tour and keep them in check. Our tour had 10 adults 2 kids and 1 kid about 10 years old interrupted about 15 photographs, I was trying to take(trust me you will want to take tons of pictures) and was very distracting from what the tour guide was saying.**
Due to the heat, I was not able to take a guided tour, but the printed materials do a good job of explaining the memorial. This is a fitting tribute to the men that planned and executed D-Day. Worth a visit if you are in the area.
A very fun memorial to visit. Plenty to do and see with all the different monuments. A really good gift shop that has mementos related to D-Day. Expect to spend at least an hour visiting and reading all the different exhibits.

Nice little town. As well as some history info and displays of our men and women that sacrificed all! Deep appreciation and will never be forgotten.
The camping spots were not designed by someone who rvs a lot. They are good for if you have a van, small class C or smaller trailer. We fit our 29 foot trailer, but if all three sites were occupied, it would have been really tight. There is a lot of road noise as well, with trucks engine breaking. The sewer connection is not threaded and the drain field rate isn't as fast as a trailer can dump. So when you drop tanks, do so in waves or it will overflow on you. (There was evidence of the previous person having that problem) The price was okay though at $25 for full hookups. The visitor center staff was friendly. The disc golf was weak, more of a putting range than a course. All around an okay spot for a night or two, but not excellent.
Beautiful views and peaceful setting out back watching sunset .
I have been to many welcome centers throughout the East Coast and this one is by far the most amazing. Not only are the staff friendly and welcoming from front desk to guided tours to maintenance staff, the facility itself is spotless and has an array of Virginia memorabilia. There is a small gift shop and a fireman's band museum. If you have plans to visit the D-Day Memorial, you must purchase tickets here. I could say many things but I'll leave it at amazing!
Very nice welcome center. Clean. Well organized. Great displays including an antique fire truck. Helpful staff. Clean bathrooms. Lots of information, maps and guides.
Great place to learn about what to see in Bedford. D-day memorial is a must see!! The Bedford boys tribute center was also wonderful.
Fun place to rest and relax d day memorial next Dore full hook up rv spots 25$ Bedford Virginia is a good area to explore
I've never seen the like. Friendly, large and 1st class, especially the restored fire engine.

Love Johnson’s orchard! Have been coming here since I was little and we take all our friends during the summer. Pretty scenery and rows upon rows of apples and peaches. There’s also a little farm area down the trail from the main orchard area with animals the kids can enjoy visiting. And of course you have to say hello to Johnny Appleseed!
Not the best orchard if you’re looking for fresh apples. So many in the bins in the store were rotting. Many on the trees were the same way. Unorganized as far as picking. We asked about location in the orchard of types of apples and were told “they’re all mixed up”. If you’re in Bedford I suggest Gross Orchard. Silver Creek and Seaman’s is great if you’re over toward Crabtree Falls. Carter mountain is another great place if you’re close to Charlottesville.
We hadn’t been in 8 years but previously had a wonderful time picking apples and feeding animals, was well kept. This time we were very disappointed. Prices were high and quality was low. The donut machine was down and the had muffins instead, skip them! Also, got a bag to pick apples and the trees were bare and looked really rough. Would have been better to just tell use the season was over. Finally, we went to feed animals and some where fine but there was a really old sick looking goat that looked to be in pain. My daughter was worried about him. Overall, if you want wine probably a great place if you want apple picking go somewhere else.
We come here every year. Would be nice if they posted somewhere that the frost killed all the produce and they don’t have ANYTHING on the trees to pick so people aren’t driving over an hour for some donuts and a petting zoo. Only thing saving them is their homemade honey (which is the best I’ve ever had)
I was so impressed with how well kept the grounds and animals were. The big white pig with the huge smile on her face and the floppy ears made my day! I don’t understand why anyone would give a bad review because the apple crop was affected by a Spring freeze this year. Got some great apples and honey and had a beautiful day there with my granddaughter.
Came here for our son’s first field trip and needless to say everyone was pretty dissatisfied. Firstly the teacher was not informed there would be multiple other schools there (not entirely a big deal), secondly she was not told they wouldn’t be picking apples because there were NO apples to be picked which was the WHOLE POINT, thirdly the presentations were a little drawn out for 3 & 4 year olds, & finally they only had 3 porta potties which is a less than ideal situation for toddlers and infants. The store and animals were cute, also the kiddos liked the giant Johnny Apple seed to climb. You should be upfront about the apple picking situation next time because that was really shady and misleading; especially when you have a bunch of kids excited about picking apples just for you to tell them after driving 40+ mins there’s no apples to pick….
The kids and I love feeding the animals and picking apples. You can get adult and kids slushies our favs and donuts. Great view.
This is a great place to visit! They have a lot of attractions, flowers, wine, and of course all things apple related. You can pick fresh apples or get some from the bins. Great time and expense had been put in to make this a great place to visit!

I used Harvest Host to find this location after Hurricane Helene shut everything in western VA and NC down for the foreseeable future. The owners and employees at the winery were friendly and I got to hear the history of the orchard and winery first hand from the owners. The winery is nestled in the valley with the Peaks of Otter mountain ridge as the scenery. It's a great place to stop and relax for a bit as you take in the sights and atmosphere at this serene location.
We had an enjoyable visit. The staff and owner were awesome. We also enjoyed the store as well as the breathtaking views. We went out of our comfort zone and had a bottle of Grandma’s Elderberry. While not a fan of fruit wine, we really enjoyed the elderberry wine. We are definitely happy we visited and happy they were a Harvest Hosts which prompted our visit.
Stopped here on a Sunday just after they opened. The staff was friendly and helpful. Service was good. They have a large selection of unique and different wines. A lot of sweet wines. You get a tasting of 8 wines for 8 dollars. You can also pick your own apples or grapes. Plus they have animals you can feed.
Love all their sweet wine. If you love sweet wine this is the place to go. All fruity wines. Great view of the surrounding mountains and great staff.
Nice place to hit for nice views and some wine. All of the wine is on the fruity sweet side of the scale. They have a gift shop and do wine tastings, there.
Great attributes but the wine was really lacking for me. If you enjoy sweet sweet wines this might be for you. My boyfriend and I found the wines overly sweet and some to taste very medicine like, unfortunately. Beautiful land and this would be a great experience for someone looking for the apple and grape picking experience. Picked up some jams and other items in the cute little shop inside. Disappointingly didn’t like any wines enough to purchase.
Update. I came back again. Danny and Pat are absolutely awesome! I fell in love with Cafe Vino and Pumpkin Pie wine!!! This winery is adorable! I had 8 wine tastings for $8. Loved several of the wines. The place also felt like a country store with jams, salsa, sauces, pickled veggies, local honey, and so much more. Next to it is an orchard. You can also feed the animals! Easy to get to and worth going!!!!!
I love this place!! I was looking for a winery near Lynchburg to go to on the weekends as a retreat and I think I found it. You can get a flight of 8 samples and choose which wines you want to try. They have a lot of sweet wines, which I love. They have board games and books for you to enjoy along with your wine too! I personally recommend the cherry cheesecake, twisted tangerine and strawberry reserves.

Always a wonderful Orchard to visit. A wonderful setting, with an array of produce. I’ve always enjoyed purchasing fruit and vegetables from them. Some of the highest quality produce can be found here. The staff is always so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. This trip, I purchased peaches and damson plums for a few jars of homemade jams. Looking forward to apple season.
Best apples we've ever had ans friendly people. Expect to pay a bit of money but nothing I would consider out of the ordinary. They take cards too. They have so much to choose from and even homemade icecream
A very homey farm fruit and veggie roadside establishment. Lots of in season fruits and veggies. We went for apples and cider. We left with those items and yellow eyed beans. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The owners were also very helpful. He reminded me of my grandfather and the family farm I grew up on. They also sold local honey, jams, jellies, peach cider, etc. We plan on going back!
Gross' Orchard is a nice place to visit for fruits and vegetables, and it's located approximately 11 miles north of the town of Bedford, Va., off of Rt.43. GPS directions as of now from Roanoke, Va. are complicated, so I recommend taking 460, then 221 north through Bedford, and then route 43 towards Peaks of Otter. Once you travel about 6 miles, you will see signs for Gross Orchard, 2.4 miles off Rt. 43. As of today, 7/5/2025, the parkway is closed for repairs, so I wouldn't add the Peaks to your trip in this area. We were impressed with the fruits and vegetables, namely, peaches, early season apples, blackberries, blueberries, and the usual garden variety cukes, tomatoes, corn, squash, etc. They also had a local gentleman playing music. The store also carries honey, jams and jellies. There is alot more to be had but you need to plan a visit and maybe you'll find alot more items. Hours are 8:00 - 6:00 Monday thru Saturday.
Great apples and a huge selection of other items. The apples were very good. You can pick them yourself or they have a huge selection in bins. The hot apple pie was perfect! Not too sweet.
I bought a bag of peaches, brought them home and couldn't eat a single one because they were all mealy. They must sit them in cold storage for too long. Same with the apples at the end of the season. I suggest you pick the fruit at the orchard yourself.
I have visited here every summer since 2018. Delicious peaches and apples. Having so much fun picking peaches with nice weather. Jam, preserves, ice creams, and salad dressings are best things to try! I tried at least 5 different kinds of preserves already. I will definitely visit again soon during this summer time. 🍑✨
The apple picking is awesome. Bring some bug spray & get ready to have some fun. The apples are amazingly big & colorful. They looked small until we got them home. Beautiful. I actually bought a lot of jams & jellies. Great pics.

My kids and I loved our visit.
So much history in the area. Amazing stories of people who lived, worked, and sacrificed here. Another "must do" for history buffs.
So for a museum it's great, as museums should be, but around the holidays they transform the top floor in to a giant model train display that is pure magic. My son starts nagging about it with the first nip in the air and won't shut up until we go!😃
I took 2 vases to them to put on display. They were hand painted by indians in the 1800's and was pleasantly surprised by all that was in this museum, if you have never been it is well worth your time.
Trains until January 4th. Big sign on door open at 10. Plan day around my visit. Show up at 10:16 and door locked. Very Poor!
Excellent Museum Virginia and Native American and Bedford County History. Native American collection-War Between The States-World War and World War 2 -Model Railroad exhibit-Black American History-A must see!
I live in another State but I have purchased a book and used their services. The staff is professional and helpful! I decided to become a member!

Attended a race today w my daughter. This park has really been updated to meet all needs of being outsdoors.
I’ve been bringing my kids here forever. I think the playground was new when I started taking my 12 yr old when she was two. The playground could use some TLC lately. There’s some graffiti and could use more mulch. Last time we went the duck spring ride had finally been taken down. The turtle has been gone for a few years. Hopefully something will replace them. The circle path is good for walking or riding bikes and scooters. There’s a few biking trails that you can walk too. It does get super muddy after rain so be careful. There’s a little creek you can walk down to and cross a bridge at a few different points. We saw a water snake hanging out in the creek this summer so watch where you’re stepping. Pavilions are nice for gatherings. If you’re into disc golf, they have a great course. I’ve also seen that the parks and rec have been doing more family events which is great for the community.
We attended the Bee Festival there, first time being in the park. It was beautiful, well manicured and I didn't even realize they had pavilions and frisbee golf too. Great place to walk, have a party, etc. 😊
This place was an amazing park! A real hidden gem! There is so much to do here to! You can go hiking. Play Frisbee (they even have golf Frisbee courses). Have a picnic. Take you kids to the playground. Bike ride. Use the park's exercise courses. There us so much stuff here to do!
It was absolutely beautiful. Max and I walked forever, and there was always new ground to cover.
Beautiful park! We drove 45 min to play the disc golf course and had a blast. The course is laid out perfectly and well maintained. You can tell there was a ton of effort and thought put into the layout of everything. There’s yellow & red baskets and having never played here before, it was really easy to find everything. The trails were really nice and they also had little workout areas that you could use to exercise with. I thought it was really neat that they had those little areas. I’ve never seen that in a park before. Overall I was very impressed and will come back again.
Wonderful park! Tons of space to run, walk and play. Playground is here, public bathrooms, multiple dining spots with ample tables. There are exercise modules along the walk path. Grass is nicely cut. There is a great frizby golf course. The breeze along the slope here is awesome! Decent parking space for the park size. Multiple trash receptacles.
Quick dog walk around the exercise loop, but definitely have to explore the wooded trails next time. Note: it's nestled behind the VA Extension office, so drive past that building to get to that parking area.

I was looking for a small table, the staff was very helpful and nice. Found the perfect thing. A nice shop to look around in with a great variety of treasures.
Bought a vintage local cannery label here today, and the lady FOLDED it in half to place in my bag. Who would do that? Now it's creased. Otherwise I love this place.
Awesome store. Great place. Richard was very friendly and brought a purchased item to my car. Thanks for finding what i was looking for.
Great place to find Treasures of the 1950-1980s. NickNatches, old toys, household goods and such, but old albums and used tools as well. Since the place wasn't heated very well I would probably rate it a 4.5, but their prices were very reasonable.
So much fun and beautiful things in here! The owner is wonderful! She can help you find anything at all that you're looking for! I found the most darling chicken hand towel handmade and not like others I have seen it actually looks like a little girls dress! I just love this place and you will too!
You never know what treasures lay awaiting to be discovered! Love this store
My wife and I stopped here yesterday - very cool (and deceptively large) antiques and vintage store. The owner was very nice and helpful...and she’s got a very organized store that’s easy to navigate. Definitely recommend stopping here...
I had fun today in this shop, found this awesome oriental style dress for $26!! The work is beautiful, manufactured I'm thinking, but GORGEOUS!👍

Awesome nature center with truly beautiful, beyond-average hiking trails. The Big Otter River runs right through the place. Great walls and shelves of rock line the river edges and giant boulders lie below in the water. There are alternating areas of rapids but other areas are dead calm, serene. Some of the trails just follow the edge of the river. Also, there is a (very narrow) boardwalk over the flood plains of the river that then meanders into the woods, with natural water plants and gardens along the way. I was so impressed with the sheer awesomeness, the unspoiled nature, and the sense of solace. Other than the river water and bird sounds, there is blessed silence. There is much, much more. Do yourself a favor and check this Claytor Nature Center out. Plus, it's absolutely free.
Gorgeous place! The views are amazing. I attended their 100 year celebration and had a great time listening to music , shopping the vendors and viewing the amazing landscaping.
Such a beautiful spot with an amazing view of the Peaks of Otter!! The trails are nice.
Our favorite local get away spot! So much to do and explore here. Great for every age group. We always discover something new with each visit. The staff is always so kind and eager to share information and teach you new things about the surroundings.
Definitely worth a visit! Trails, play space for kids, gorgeous views and campsites!
A beautiful, off the beaten path nature center........but it gives you everything you want for a nature experience. The bridge with the picturesque stream running below it gives you a photo that'll definitely be framed! Rolling hills and dense forest offer hiking for every level of trailblazer. I'll tell ya, this area will surely get your Zen flowing........no matter which path you take! We didn't go into the nature center establishment (it was a Sunday), but the scenic trails were enough to give the rating I did. There is a $10 entry fee, but we thought it was definitely justified
$10 per visitor is a big money grab. Used to be free. We could come in and spend an hour or two just taking some trails. Have not heard a lot of great things about the new person in charge. Probably why the huge fee now. I can see charging for upkeep, $5 per vehicle would seem a fair price but not $10 per person. And no, I’m probably not going to stop by the library for a day pass like they say you can do. Usually we would stop by there on a whim. Haven’t visited since the new fees.

What a wonderful time! I'm putting this treasure on my schedule for more frequent visits.
Nice stuff, but so unaffordable, no one came to us to say hi or to check on us, he was too busy reading a magazine. Not the best experience
The staff here do not honor their opening hours. The doors were locked more than 20 minutes before closing. Not the end of the world, but does speak on their professionalism.
I visited this store today looking for cast iron cookware. I identified 10 pieces I was interested in. The pieces were being offered at 40% of the retail price. Based on the condition of these pieces all of them are over priced even at the 40% off price. I spoke to the gentleman at the counter, who had always been polite and courteous to me. He provided me the telephone number to Sonja, stating she was the one to speak with about a bundle price. I spoke to Sonja, making my offer and started to explain my reasoning. She rudely interrupted me mid- sentence, telling me the price is what it is. She said this in an extremely abrasive tone. I politely said thank you. I simply wanted to ask. In all my dealings at this shop I have never dealt with anyone so rude , impolite, and unfriendly. It doesn't speak well for the people of Bedford. As much as I have enjoyed visiting the shop. I'm doubting I will ever return.
This place holds many wonderful treasures inside! They have something for the antique shopper, and they have something for the casual antique enthusiast. If you're in the area, you should definitely stop by and take a little walk through their huge selection of items. Basically, if they don't have it.....you don't need it!
Nice place Lots of cool antiques and very unique finds A little on the expensive side
Went here on a Sunday afternoon. There is so much to see you have to take the time to look at everything. Owners are very helpful and oh so friendly! There is something for everyone here as there are many different eras of items. There is a big selection on furniture, barn stars, jewelry, and so many various antiques. As soon as you walk in it's like stepping back in time and you're sure to find something you like to buy.

This shop really does have a little bit of everything. The guy who owns this shop is extremely friendly and easy to talk to. Like most antique consignment stores, there were a lot of higher priced items, but there were also a few good deals if you looked hard enough.
One of my favorite places to visit in bedford!! Great selection of products and I find something new everytime I go in. The owner the the nicest guy you will meet! 10/10 will stop every single time I'm in the area.
I am new to Bedford, having just started working here in the Fall. Living in Roanoke, I am spoiled at the selection of antique, thrift, and consignment shops. However, this place gives them all a run for their money! Of particular interest is a great beer and wine selection that the owner, Mark, has curated. He sources products throughout Virginia, but even goes out-of-state for interesting finds! Mark is super friendly, knowledgeable about the area and his products, and just makes for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Highly recommended and worth traveling for!!!
Great antique store! Easy to wander through, lots of different stuff to explore, and a very nice woman ensured that all of questions were answered (and she gave us a fantastic lunch tip - thank you!)
Mark and his beautiful wife have a great business which we frequent often. Wine selection is great.
Amazing shop and proprietor. Had an amazing chat! Cool thing about this shop is that he carries a selection of unique craft beer and wine! Cool find! The store has everything under the sun vintage and antique that you could justify parting ways with that money burning a hole in your pocket. Highly recommend checking it out if you are hunting antiques and unique finds and also looking for an elixir to sip while gazing upon your cherished new antiques!
We just happened upon the shop visiting VA. Bought some stuff and garlic. The garlic is great! Hopefully I can stop and get a couple more bottles for my garlic loving kids!
No matter what errands I have to run while in Bedford I make sure that I stopped at the store it is so unique great gift items, just a great fun shopping experience for antiques gifts crafts and one of a kind items. The owner who is generally there and his team are very nice people always up for a chat. Support local and visit this great store which is actually an attraction in itself bring your kids and let them learn something more than a big box store.

This is going to be an awesome WEDDING VENUE! I'm unable to post pics that I have "erased" people from so these are just a few. Many more stunning areas and rooms! You have to see this house in person to appreciate it. Absolutely a treasure!
Had a great night at the Avenel on Paranormal Night! I would highly recommend going. Whether or not you are into the Paranormal, the architecture and history of the building are fantastic.
What a beautiful and wonderful place to hold our wedding. I couldn’t have picked a better venue. Everything was very well-maintained in the house. The furniture is beautiful. The outside is beautiful. The staff that we interacted with was top-notch very accommodating very friendly. We absolutely loved holding our wedding there.
What a beautiful location for a wedding! I took photos here on a beautiful fall day, and Avenel was the perfect backdrop for an intimate gathering. The home is stunning and well cared for, and the grounds were in excellent shape. There is a lot of history in this place too!
Avenue is a lovely venue for any occasion. The rooms and the porch provide lots of spaces for conversation. Parking is on the lawn.
My best friend lives right across the street, so it's a hop skip and a jump to get to this beautiful old home. I grew up in Bedford County, and the scary stories that were told about this place are crazy. Def. Worth the visit.
Absolutely beautiful house. We had some very interesting events happen to us while investigating there tonight. I would definitely drive back up from North Carolina to investigate this location again. This is a perfect place to really get your feet in the door as investigators.
Great food, generous portions. Nice atmosphere.
