Venerated, distinctive, circa-1870 lighthouse offering climbs with scenic vistas.

The lighthouse is the tallest in the US. Unfortunately we couldn’t climb due to it undergoing restoration, however this was the first time in a few decades the park ranger said the lighthouse was completely unpainted. It’s also pretty interesting knowing the history of how they moved the lighthouse 2900ft in 23 days. Definitely a go to. Can’t wait until it opens back up to climb!
It is in the process of being refurbished. We did get to see the original red brick! The gift shop is open. Just be prepared for construction. But it still is pretty impressive.
The lighthouse is an icon of mine, from many visits as a child. I even honeymooned at the park years ago. This time we were surprised to find it paintless, covered in scaffolding, and only viewable from a distance. Even so, we were glad we visited. Winds from two offshore hurricanes made eerie tunes through the scaffolding. It was a unique experience in an old favorite spot.
Learned from the lady at the gift shop that this has been ongoing for 21 months with no projected end date. Although I didn't get a chance to see it complete, and perhaps never will, its still really cool to see all the work going into it. The woman at the gift shop was really helpful and had a lot of helpful information since the museum was closed at the time.
Good lord, what a job they are doing to refurbish the light house. I'm glad to see it being kept up. Sorry we missed really seeing it all done. Great gift shop and nice restroom. I am looking forward to coming back and seeing the restoration completed.
Unfortunately the lighthouse is under repairs. It was supposed to complete in fall of 2025, but they found additional structural issues at the top & awaiting additional funding TBD. The gift store/visitor center & museum are open though.
It's being stripped and repainted. Lots of layers of paint. Inside photos are of the museum beside it. It's a museum dedicated to the life-saving crews and the keepers of the lighthouse
Even though it was closed for moving and renovations. It was nice to see in person and get to learn about the lighthouse and the purpose of it getting moved and how long it has been in the works.

Wonderful ice cream and the service is top notch, great experience, highly recommend in this small town.
Great custard, we should have played mini golf as it’s unlimited for $10 per adult as of July 2025. They even had Malt options for my dad. Cute place, heard the original building burned down (didn’t fact check) but the workers were friendly and spot they are in now was adorable did the job!
The mini-golf course is small, however it's very cheap compared to others, at $10 per-person. The ice cream isn't bad, it's just a little pricey. As for the restroom they currently have porta-potties.
Oh where to even start... The mini golf course left a lot to be desired. The lightening was awful and you could hardly see some of the holes. They have bricks at the start of each hole laying horizontally which caused a lot of trips and even some falls. Everyone in my party left with no less than 100 bug bites each. They need to get a company out to spray for bugs and the roaches were every where too! After golfing we went to get some ice cream. It was around 940p-945p. We had 8 people in our party. 6 of us got to order off the full menu but when the last two went to order, they told them only the soft serve flavors because they are getting ready to close. Therefore they lost a sale! I understand they close at 10 but if they dont want to serve after 945p, they need to have that clearly posted! Oh and the bathrooms... thats a port-a-potty. It was one of the worst mini golf/ice cream experiences and we will never be back!
Great sweet treat. A little expensive but hey, you’re on vacation! I enjoyed a strawberry banana sundae!
Closed. Got here Friday at 8:45 and everything was dark. Sign posed out front said it should be open till ten but there was no one there. Passed three other family’s trying to see if they were open as well.
Nice little ice cream/custard stop. We arrived 20 minutes before closing, and we were the only ones there. Pretty good selection and everything tasted pretty good. Not the best that I've had, but good nonetheless! I had the "Elvis" flavor. Small little gift shop here too.
Pretty decent ice cream/Frozen Custard parlor. The place looks like it's seen better days, but is overall in good condition. They have a mini golf course out front and what seems like might get to be cramped parking during peak hours. You can either sit outside or inside, which is nice during the evening. They sell various seashell/beach jewelry and decorations. We enjoyed our ice cream and the staff were pretty friendly. I also like how the location is not far from the beach and other amenities. If you're in the area, you should stop by and try it out.

Hands down my favorite place on the sound side. The water here is super shallow and you can stand in most parts. We came and paddle boarded here and it was a great experience. Be mindful of the wind and current, we just sat on the paddle boards for a while and the current drifted us way east. This met we had to paddle for quite a while to get back to highway 12. But it's wonderful, I definitely recommend:) this has been one of the most fun things I've done down here in the Outer Banks:)
Love this place. If you are a kiter or wind surfer, or a wannabe, it is an awesome place to visit
Beautiful sunsets, great venue for wind and kite surfing.
Second best spot on the sound side. Now with showers.

A very beautiful trail with lots of fun facts along the 3/4 mile loop. Dwarf palmettos grow naturally all throughout with a surprisingly amount of other plant life and vegetation. It's the largest forest on the National Seashore. Lots of things I could share but I would say come see and experience it for yourself. Thank you for your time for reading my review and with that being said, Happy Trails and Safe Travels. Love and Light Everyone!!!
Shaded trail and easy walking. Great placards describing plants, animals AND the history of the landscape. Wear bug spray, closed toed shoes and be cautious of massive spider webs and snakes.
A lovely 3/4 mile walk of various terrain! Good for bird watching, turtle and frog finding, or just a leisurely walk. Also infront is a quaint picnic area with a few little grills. Plenty of parking and two port-o-potties for convenience....(Although if you need a potty, head across the street to the lighthouse bathrooms - much nicer) 😀
We found a lot of hiking trails while visiting the Outer Banks. It's not what most people do, but we're not big beach people (and it's not all that warm in November). This spot is right across the street from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, so it's conveniently located. The trail is really short and flat like most of the trails in the Outer Banks. It's only .8 miles, so it's a quick stop. The trail is wooded and goes through a swampy wetlands area, similar to most of the other trails we did. I wouldn't say this was my favorite hike we did, but it's worth a stop if you're going to the lighthouse anyway.
Insane amount of mosquitos. Decent trail, length enough for a hot day. Certainly not a "must do" and not scenic. Some shaded picnic tables and porta potties.
This was a nice trail, and when you come to the fork in the road, just know that it loops around. There's a boardwalk section that kind of looks like the Everglades in Florida, and there are many interesting Flora to be found in this section of woods. As for time, I give yourself 30 to 40 minutes depending on how fast you walk and how many signs you read. My only complaint is that a lot of the signs were hard to read.
A magnificent view. Free unless you are in shape to walk up 12 story and back down. The light house is breathtaking. Beautiful and interesting. The perfect one day getaway or summer vacation. Beautiful get away for a family.
Fun afternoon outing, was worried I’d run into a cottonmouth but didn’t see any.

Decent food for a decent price! We really liked the fish and chips—got the fish blackened instead of fried, and it was delicious. I thought the fish tacos were kind of mid (Mexican cheese on fish isn’t really my thing), but the mac and cheese burger and the egg & bacon burger were both solid. All the servers and even the chef were super kind and helpful. I’d definitely come back!
Good food, huge portions, and great prices. If you're looking for a good burger and have an adventures side to trying new food combinations this is your place. The hot dogs were outstanding! The service and atmosphere was awesome and everyone working seems so down to earth. I would definitely recommend this place and foresee us returning in the future. They also serve Hersey's ice cream, so you can even get a sweet treat before you leave!
What a fun and delicious stop in Buxton, NC ! We tried a couple of their specialty hotdogs and were seriously impressed. The mac & cheese hotdog topped with BBQ sauce was an unexpected flavor bomb—in the best way. Paired with skinny-cut fries, it made for a fantastic, indulgent lunch. We also tried a loaded jalapeño dog, which brought the perfect kick. The vibe inside is laid-back and fun, with tons of amusing signage to read while you wait. Service was quick—you order at the counter, grab a table, and they bring your food out fresh. The staff was super friendly and even checked in to make sure we were loving everything (we were!). There’s also an in-store ice cream counter that looked tempting, but we were too full to try it. Next time for sure! Highly recommend stopping in and grabbing one of their creative hotdogs—you won’t regret it!
We were looking for an eatery that had “something for everyone” as my husband is a fan of seafood and the smell of seafood makes me sick to my stomach. We decided to try Fatty’s and we were pleasantly surprised! The casual atmosphere is exactly what we were hoping for. I was able to order a Philly with fries. The smell of seafood never overwhelmed me! My husband loved his shrimp and grits. We were so impressed with the food we ate there twice during our stay. We highly recommend Fatty’s for those families who have folks who can’t handle seafood! They had the best fries and onion rings I’ve ever had… and the “come back sauce” had us wanting to come back again! Additionally, the cook was able to guarantee our little one with an egg allergy was able to eat something safe.
I cannot express the great food, great experience and most of all the best food. You will not be disappointed!!! From the time you walk in your greeted with smiles and they will explain the specials. They are the best, this is a secret and the best on the OBX. I will say the best customer on the OBX. You want kids menu they got it, ice cream they have it. Bring your quarters for the arcade games. Tell them Steve sent you!!
A great place to stop on your way to Ocracoke or an end to a beach day. Fish tacos are amazing. They also have an ice cream parlor and game room.
AMAZING beach food! Try the Mac and cheese hot dogs or the Vader Chicken sandwich!!! Thanks to the owner Jeff for the great service!
We had a great time! The atmosphere was fun for the kids and the staff were really nice! The menu has all sorts of food I want to try. I ended up picking the fish and chips and it was great. I'm ready to go back and try the Vader dog.

Grant behind the counter was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and helped me pick out the right fish (wahoo) and cut I wanted for grilling. The fish tasted fresh and the store was very clean. I'll be coming here every time we come down to Buxton.
We visited Buxton Seafood while camping in the area. We wanted to have a good meal with our friends we were camping with and Buxton Seafood absolutely delivered on quality and customer service! The tuna steaks we picked up were so good, we had to call and ask for some more to take home with us. Staff was very knowledgeable an friendly. The store has a lot to offer when you go in!
Wow! Buxton Seafood is incredible! The employees were very knowledgeable and completely helpful. They have a wonderful selection of fresh and frozen seafood and everything you could need or want to have with it. A wonderful selection of sauces and spices was available and well priced. We really don't feel the need to try anywhere else for seafood while on our vacation because Buxton Seafood was SO GREAT.
Great seafood, and now there is some great produce on offer. My family has been getting great seafood from Buxton Seafood for years. It’s always been a staple, but in the last few years they’ve gone over the top! The young woman who owns it has really great catches to offer and she’ll help you out with any questions. And, I was there a few weeks ago and picked up a few delicious ears of corn and perfect peaches.
We're annual or semi annual patrons. Their selections vary, as expected. Have never eaten a bad piece of fish or shellfish, ever. Always good quality seafood in our experience. Proprietor is friendly and helpful. Easy access parking. Spice and frozen seafood available as well. Can't go wrong here, in my humble opinion.
If you’re looking for the BEST seafood in the Outer Banks look no further! Buxton Seafood has some of the best fish and widest selection to choice from.
Helpful, friendly staff and locally owed business! Bought a lb of shrimp for ceviche and some local jarred pickles and eggs. They also sell fresh bread and have a produce stand. We come here every year and stop by for our seafood, and it’s the best!
Incredible service and selection of local and non-local fish, shrimp, and shellfish. Very clean and well run with a cooler of frozen items, fresh made dips, and a few produce items. They are so nice and helpful and really care about their products and their customers. Don’t be deterred by old bad reviews. We had come here a few years ago when the previous owners were still running it and had a horrible experience. I’m so glad that we gave it another chance!

Beautiful location full of great pieces...all so tasteful, from the inviting outside to the displays inside. Very kind owner/family. My mom especially liked this place, it was the highlight of her trip....and my dad even found some antique tools and toys, too! I appreciated that they told me to let my little dog out in their yard instead of waiting in the car as we all took turns sitting with him in my car.
So glad I discovered this place. They have tons of old and new selections from all over the world. They sell antique stained glass windows from London. Most of them are from the 1920s London but quite a few are much older. If you pay cash you save 10% and they're super careful in wrapping as I bought a few fragile items and drove cross country. Prices are extremely reasonable for what they sell as well.
Shirley has an eye for detail & exceptional taste in anything vintage. Looking for treasures with her is an exciting voyage that you will never forget! She truly is a Blessing on earth & makes everything shine a little brighter every time she walks into a room. You can tell how much she truly loves what she does & it can become contagious when you see her beautiful merchandise. The Elegant Attic is a MUST see if you make your way to Buxton Beach.....you will not regret it!❤️
We purchased our 4th stained glass window today at the Elegant Attic in Buxton. Such a beautiful shop chocked full of antiques, gifts, and the fore mentioned stained glass. And the owner, Shirley, is a sweetheart too.
Wonderful prices of stained glass! The owner is very personable. Variety of items! Highly recommend you stop if you are in the Buxton area!
The cutest store! So many cool stuff and very affordable! The owner and her son super sweet and very welcoming! I want this store in my town!
My favorite store in the world! Go every year to bring home little treasures from my vacation. Owner has a great eye for antiques.
Love this store! Beautiful new and antique items. Lots of stained glass windows. Very friendly.

So friendly, affordable, quaint, wonderfully decorated inside and out, and an excellent selection of excellent books.
Buxton Village Books is one of those rare, magical places that feels like home the moment you step inside. My family has been vacationing in the Outer Banks for years, and no trip is complete without a visit to this charming little bookshop tucked away in Buxton. It’s more than just a bookstore—it’s a tradition, a staple of our summers, and a place that holds a special place in our hearts. Every shelf is packed with character, from beach reads and local interest books to children’s favorites and hard-to-find gems. I love that they carry titles by local authors and books about the rich history and ecology of the Outer Banks. The woman that owns the bookstore is always warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. You can tell she truly cares about books and the people who read them.
My wife and I always make a stop. Beach and a new book, nothing better. The store is truly a treasure.
Great little bookstore in a tiny town. Cute little place with a larger selection of books then I would have thought would have been here. We stopped with the family since our nieces wanted to check it out. They have a good area of local authors, a used book area and pretty up to date current books. You must wear a mask in the store, a nice older lady seemed to run, if not own the store. If your looking to pick up something to read on the beach, this is a great place to get something and support a small.lo business.
Buxton Village Books is an absolute treasure! Stepping inside feels like discovering a hidden gem, thanks in large part to Gigi, the thoughtful owner. She's perfectly balanced a fantastic selection of national bestsellers with an incredibly strong showing of talented local authors, which is wonderful to see. Beyond that, the shelves are filled with such thoughtfully curated books – you'll find unique titles and delightful surprises around every corner, clearly chosen with a genuine love for books. They even have a delightful kids' section, a thoughtful array of art supplies, and unique gifts and cards perfect for any occasion. A must-visit for any book lover on the island!
This place was super cute and amazing book selection! Also had quite a few used books lower priced which was great. Highly recommend. If you are in Buxton, don't miss this shop.
This bookstore had a great selection of new and used books, cards, journals, and a small selection of art. I honestly think everyone could find something that they like here. This bookstore is inside a detached kitchen, and it still has some of the original wood shingles from the 1800s on it. I think the history of the location of the bookstore added to its interest and lore. 10/10 will visit this place every year I go on vacation to the outer Banks.
This is a lovely bookstore, do unexpected. The owner takes great care in her selection of books. Great regional material in an historic building. Highly worth a detour on your way to the beach.

Had a board made here in 1981 (I think)! Still have it and still love it. Plan to visit later today. Would like to get info on my board if they can give it, like shaper, foam brand... look forward to getting back into this very cool shop!!
I left a kiteboard and kite with Fox on consignment. My wife and I stopped in there the first week of September 2023 and we were told the items had sold. At the time, I did not need any new equipment and asked for cash. The nice guy at the counter said he did not handle cash payments and would pass my information on to his boss. I have yet to receive my money. Since September, I have followed up with several phone calls, text messages, and a certified letter to no avail. Over the past 20+ years, I have used Fox for board repairs and equipment purchases and I certainly did not expect to be treated so poorly. After this experience, I will not use this shop for their consignment services (for that matter) anything else. Shame on Fox.
Rented a stand up SUP on a flat day out of boredom. Took it out for about thirty minutes and wife noticed a good size crack in the front of the board. I am not sure how it happened but pretty sure it was not there when I rented. Just thinking it was a spot that had some hits or fatigue already as it looked like it has scene plenty of use. Took it back right away and they were cool about it. I would say really inspect any of the sup boards and if you can go for an inflatable if they have one. I'd rent from them again. Just really go over any board you rent from anywhere.
I'll give you facts, you pull your own conclusions. First time I went there because my own board mast track demage. They said: "They can fix it, I can leave the board", no date when will be done. I rented 2nd board for the rest of my vacations, went to pick up mine, NOT TOUCHED. The guy who fixes boards had no time. Few years later I went back thinking maybe things are better, I needed non-skid coat, SAME STORY, unable to commit to when the job will be done.
Interesting place that has a board manufacturer on site. Beautiful rigs. I rented wsurfing boards which they swapped out for stand up paddle boards after a few days when the wind was too light. I was worried about some comments here so photographed rental equipment prior to taking. Helpful guys, nice shop atmosphere, i enjoyed just checking it out. Brian literally has a sea salt plant, Willy was helpful. I would definitely rent from them again and may even purchase a wsurfing rig from them in the future.
Rip off they rent for a lower prices by day only to charge you for a dent you didn't make. Thats how they make thier money. They use the excuse that they fix themselves but it clearly a lie. Would not recommend very disappointed will not be returning to this place.
I rented a SUP for a day. Upon returning it the next day, I was charged for a ding I did not do. Ensure if you rent equipment from this location to check it throughly before leaving.
Today is the 2nd time I have visited this store this summer and they had none of the items that I wanted, and the items I saw that I did like were very overpriced. Take your business to the Natural Art surf shop a little further down the road where you're not just another tourist to inflate prices for.
