1 of only 4 in the world, this green sand beach provides hiking trails, scenic bay views & swimming.

We walked but if you are not a hiker this is not a stroll on the beach be prepared with plenty of water and good shoes. This is not a flip flop kind of footwear hike you will regret that decision. The sun and wind exposure are real, had a pretty good headwind on the way there. You can take a ride from the locals not sure of any details on that option. They portable toilets but bring your own paper. Locals also had bottled drinks for sale.
My most memorable experience on the island! It is not only the fact that the sand is green that makes it neat— the entire surrounding landscape is drop-dead gorgeous. There is a calming presence, especially high up on the cliff overlooking that cove that contains the beach— the type of place seems and prophets would go. Be careful if you go up there— keep children away. The parking lot is far away (you can find it on Maps, nearby the southern tip of the island). A lot of people take the trucks over. I recommend hiking for anyone who wants the nice experience. As a young healthy man, it took about an hour to hike there and an hour to hike back. The terrain is not difficult to hike— just humps and bumps of dirt and sand, essentially. Getting down to the beach from the cliff looks intimidating, but it is not too hard. Take the narrow passageway alongside the vertical face of the cliff; that is easiest. Probably easier than rolling down the slope and getting cut up (did not try, but will not recommend). Be careful with the initial ladder to make the first drop; test each step before trusting it. Don't use the last one or any that look unstable. The sand really is green! Now how green are we talking? Olive is a good description. My attached photos I did shoot with increased saturation, but you definitely do see the green in all of it in person. It is not a lie! It's not going to glow like a green lava lamp or some alien from a cartoon, but the green is clearly distinguished. The ocean can get deep quickly. Big waves. Be careful, and have fun! It was a fun swim, and it is even more rewarding if you hiked there. It's like a little secret cove on the island— a true gift to behold. Hiking back during sunset was also peaceful, quiet, and just unforgettable.
Amazing experience! I rented a Jeep but I’m glad I had the local lady to drive us there and back. Very knowledgeable and down to earth. You can walk 2.8 miles but definitely not for the weak. Very steep getting down to the actual beach. Cool down with some shaved ice after, roughly a mile drive leaving heading back out.
Wow! One of four green sand beaches in the world. Definitely worth a visit. I hiked it each way, ended up being about 6ish miles round trip. The views of the coast and the waves hitting the rocks the whole way were stunning. The hike is mainly flat, but lots of rocks and sand. Also it’s very windy and there’s no shade. Bring a hat and jacket! I went very early in the morning and there was not a single soul around.
Secluded, you need to get on a wobbly car ride (20$ per person) to get here. It’s like a weird local business who stop you from taking your own car and say that only they know the route to the beach across the dunes. We didn’t have an option and used their service since the walk is too long and we didn’t trust our rental car. It was a nice experience but our backs were broken lol. The beach is secluded and nice - but not radically different from other beaches in big island. The sand is greenish but more on the grey side. The driver stopped in the middle and showed us some really green sand hidden under a rock which was pretty cool.
Rare, Relaxing, and Ridiculously Beautiful! I grabbed the $20 ride instead of hiking and I’m so glad I did — the views on the way were stunning, and it saved my energy for soaking in the beach itself. And what a beach! Papakōlea is one of only four green sand beaches in the world, which makes standing on that olive-hued shore feel even more surreal. The sand sparkles with volcanic olivine, the ocean’s a deep crystal blue, and the vibe is totally peaceful and uncrowded. That ride service is a total game-changer — easy, scenic, and it gets you straight to this rare gem of nature. A must visit place on the Big Island!
Truly stunning walk, and the green sand had a golden tinge, totally worth it, really really worth it. Start early, bring plenty of water. Be prepared to be offered by locals a lift part-way for $20. Once you get past the Carpark, the walk was totally beautiful.
We travelled with 2 kids age 10-12 and the bumping & sandy pick up truck ride gave us body aches. U pay $20 per person to sit on an old old old pick up truck and we like are getting smuggled to this beach. When we got there it was OK. U still have a short hike to go up n down. When we went it was super high tide around 4-5pm, so no one swam. So it’s a meh! Unless u want to hit a bucketlist of seeing a green sand beach, see pics n video. I wouldn’t say it’s a must if u r short of time. There are better beaches easily accessible than this one, as it felt like time waste. Truck ride roundtrip 1 hr and they allowed us to stay 1 hr at beach

We stopped at this amazing bakery on our way to the black sand beach and absolutely loved it. It’s the southernmost bakery in the US and such a fun stop for the whole family. There was a long line when we arrived but it moved fast and was totally worth the wait. The setting is beautiful with gardens and plenty of space to relax. We got two chocolate malasadas and two eclairs—so fresh and delicious. The iced coffee and smoothie hit the spot, and the regular coffee was great too. We also picked up two loaves of sweet bread to enjoy for breakfast the next day and they were gone by morning. My two little girls were all smiles the whole time and said it was one of their favorite stops on the trip. Highly recommend for anyone passing through!
Lovely historic bakery on the way to Hawaii Volcanoes national park. The bakery is set in a beautiful garden with a charming outdoor seating. They offer a wide variety of freshly baked goods. We tried the traditional masalada, which was fresh but a little too sweet. We also tried different flavors of their macadamia short bread cookies. I especially loved the guava and coffee flavored ones. This bakery is a great stop to pick up freshly baked local bites for your roadtrip.
What a great stop! The bakery has tons of delicious flavors to choose from — it’s hard to pick just one. My husband was even able to enjoy a gluten-free treat bar, which was such a nice surprise. The sweet bread was delightful as well. There’s also a fun gift shop on-site and live island music that adds to the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit if you’re passing through.
I'd been dreaming about a donut for 2 days before I got to get one here. It was SO good! It was the perfect bite. Cute gift shop. Breakfast sandwich with Portuguese sausage was tasty. Sit awhile and enjoy the moment while you're here.
Adorable island bake shop that welcomes you with a delightful aroma from the parking lot leading to the shop. Freshly baked malasadas (we enjoyed the traditional sugar) are heavenly. We were greeted by smiling, helpful staff, who offered recommendations and made the experience exceptional. Outdoor seating in a beautiful garden setting complete with gentle live music, sets this bake shop head and shoulders above others. Do not Miss.
A joy in every visit! Malasadas, sweet breads and the not to be missed Coco Pan with coconut in a sweet roll! The grounds are glorious! A must stop when you are in the area!
Very friendly staff. They ran out of malasada but we tried the sandwiches. Pastrami was good. They also have a gift shop and neat restrooms. Super cool that it’s the southern most bakery in USA
100% you must stop here! So many reasons why... Here's a few! Cheapest house made food on the island, $9 full breakfast. Huge loaf of delicious still warm house made Hawaiian bread was $5! Hawaiian doughnuts for $2. Sandwiches for under $10. Live music in a lush tropical garden. Nice store with nice souvenirs. Bathrooms were clean and fresh smelling. Pleasant employees. Great atmosphere! And to think we could have just sailed on by.

We stopped at the farm on our way back from the southernmost point of the USA. We were friendly welcomed with a lot of very tasty samplings (nuts and shortbread). The farm can be self-explored to learn more about the different plants. A great place and certainly worth a stop. It goes without saying that we bought some macadamias and some shortbread, again, .... delicious!
We stumbled upon the place whilst en route to Green Beach and are glad we stopped to check it. They have free samples of coffee, different chocolates locally made, and fruit slushies. But free samples lead to sales because all are delicious and addictive. You can walk around the orchard and see growing avocado, bananas, citrus, etc etc. some hydroponics some natural. They even have a couple of parrots. Really great stop. Expect to stay at least an hour to soak it all in.
Mostly made my own way. Was someone’s backyard no warnings until I saw their house. Unless you own the yard AVOID. Pics are including the road and inside fenced area. Simply trying to avoid the house and driveways. Based on GPS it was just over a mile and a half.
We had never heard of Paradise Meadows before our trip to the big island. It was not on our itinerary but as we were driving back from green sand beaches we saw a sign on the side of the road advertising free honey sampling. I absolutely hate honey (this will be important later) but Noah loves it so we thought why not!! I was hesitant to go in as I was filthy from the dust mixed with sunscreen from hiking 4+ miles to the beach. When we arrived we were immediately greeted by staff. Given free slushy samples to help cool us down after the hike! They also gave us LOTS of samples of chocolates, nuts and honey!! As mentioned previously I hate honey with a passion but I figured I would try it as part of the experience. I was the one convincing Noah we needed the honey to take home. If that doesn’t tell you how good it is I don’t know what will. The macadamia nuts were also delicious! We came home with multiple flavors!! The restrooms in the gallery were clean and effective. Very hospitable group of people!! The man working in the gallery (I am horrible with names) was a local who used to be a tour guide and pointed us to all the best spots to visit while visiting. The artwork in the gallery was beautiful and unique.
Cute farm with friendly staff! Home to some of the best macnuts you can find on island! Garlic parm was the best! If you come down Taco Bout Aloha is a must try! Onolicious fish tacoz!! Coffee was well priced and also pretty dang good! I had to buy a bag!! Highly suggest trying a sample while you're visiting! And if you like coffee they make a coffee chocolate bark that (and i hate to say it as my bf is italian) rivals a tiramisu possibly being what tiramisu wishes it was! Stop in for your pick me up energy and vibes wise!
It's one of my most favorite places here on big island! The best chocolate, macadamia nuts, and cookies! Coffee too 🤗 everyone there is so kind. I have been coming here for a few years now, and I always bring friend and family here to visit. Wonderful customer service, excellent all around. The animals are very well taken care of and Penny the pig is so cute!! So if you're looking for a place to bring your family, here's the spot! Samples of everything too! I learn so much every time I come here ❤️😊🌈
Great place for Mac nuts. Lots of different flavors, plus chocolate covered in lots of different flavors. We have bought their honey many times to take home,if you like honey definitely stop by. Good coffee selection. I highly recommend this farm stop.
Came across this place heading to the southern point. So glad we stopped. The staff were amazing! Got to walk around the orchard and farm. Samples of coffee, chocolate, shortbread, honey and macadamia nuts. Everything was delicious!! Amazing place, definitely worth a visit.

Stop by the Southernmost Point of the United States, clear waters, great fishing, Green Sand Beach is real close.
A windy spot most days. A good stop for visitors when driving to Volcano or the Black or Green Sand Beaches. Use caution when jumping off the cliffs or into the sinkholes. It can be lots of fun when conditions are right...deadly when conditions aren't so great. Fishing off the cliffs is a common sight for the locals. Take a few minutes and notice the tackle and rigging...a different approach to getting your bait and line out in the current.
Definitely worth the drive. Parking is close to the bluffs so easy to access. Scenery heading in is epic.
Just had to visit while on vacation and planned on jumping off the cliff after learning that this area is the southern most point in the geographic US. At first it’s a little intimidating (sign says you’ll die, the waves crashing against the cliff edge, little latter to climb up). I’ve done plenty of cliff jumping, but never into the ocean like this. There were a bunch of others jumping and I was motivated!! Sooooooo glad I jumped (ended up doing it seven times). The only thing I regretted was not wearing some water shoes or something of the sort as the balls of my feet were sore from the latter climb. But if you plan on just jumping once you’ll be fine. I can see why they put the sign up (I’m sure some lawyer said they had to) but I never felt in danger one bit. It’s only about 35 feet and if the latter gives there is a way to climb out if you swim into the cavern that’s right below the jumping spot. The water was beautiful and felt so good on that hot day. Just do it!!!!
An Amaizing place, the drive is beautiful. Breathtaking views. A perfect match of rocky mountain and clear waters. If you are an experienced swimmer you gotta try jump from the Southest point of Hawaii. The claim back up its very challenging 🤙😎
Visually appealing. Nice drive to site. Lots of room to park. Short easy walk to the actual "south point marker". Officially, cliff-jumping, cliff-diving not allowed...as per posted signage. The ladder to get back up the cliff (from the water...after you jumped in) is now short. It apparently broke..and no longer reaches close enough to water surface for you to climb back up. See attached photo. One of the locals fishing there told me that some people successfully scale back up the rocks after jumping in. He definitely did not recommend that. He said there is safer cliff-jumping at "End of the World".
Once in a lifetime experience cliff jumping here. It was exhilarating! If you are not experienced, only jump if the water is calm, you see others jumping, and you have the upper body strength to climb back up the ladder.
A good place to go with friends and family. There’s a big hall you can jump into and swim to ocean but it’s kinda dangerous. You have to be careful. And also, you can jump into the Pacific Ocean from the cliff. It sounds and looks horrible but it’s absolutely fun and worth trying.

A very nice little and clean Hawai'ian beach park. We stopped for a picnic and a rest as a few other people too. A scenic and peaceful place.
I really enjoyed this park. It had more locals than tourists & even though I'm a tourist, I like to see places like a local when traveling. We gazed at the waves for quite some time as it was gorgeous!
Beautiful place to watch the waves and enjoy a peaceful beach. It's not a typical sandy beach. It's lava rocks...But you can get in the water and explore the tide pools. The remains of an old pier are visible. This was a major port during the height of the Sugar Cane Plantations. Don't miss the huge, very old Banyan Tree...
Beautiful landscape and shoreline can be found here. Mongoose families are all over to entertain, and the birds are devine. Schools of little fish can be seen in the tidal pools and ocean. This is a worthy place to explore and enjoy. There are picnic tables and BBQ grills here. Also of note, this is a historical location and worth the stop.
Was a quick but cool stop for my wife and my day adventure with our friends! Also read up on the destroyed Honuapo Pier that's partially intact.
This is a beautiful park. The small pond attached and the old cattle pier are wonderful.
Volcanic rock meets the shore in a stalemate that feels intensely comforting. Plenty of parking, picnic tables and places to hang out. A large Banyan tree is wirth paying homage to. It is unbelievably large. There's a mortality that's maintained and this park is great spot to take break from driving to the Kona side.
My favorite place for lunch. Grab some treats from the bakery and bring them down. Lots of birds if your into birding.

It is an amazing place. We missed an eruption by a few hours, but it's worth driving down to the sea arch. Walking the lava tunnel, the whole park is beautiful!
This is a great place to hike in southern Hawaii. The trails are well marked and you can hike through a variety of terrain, including an old lava flow.
This place is absolutely huge, so really it needs 7 or 8 reviews as you break it into parts. We did 4 hikes here over a long day in July and each one was just awesome. From the lush forests to the seemingly endless craters we loved it all. The rangers were great, with super helpful suggestions on where to go next. The parking at some of the trailheads was a tad crazy, but I guess that goes with the territory. FWIW our fav hike was Kilauea Iki Day hike
Very scenic landscape. Go to the Hilo side of the island to see the active volcano. Wear hiking attire and be prepared for lots of walking down trails and up hills. Many places are accessible by car. You'll need to make this an all-day visit to really enjoy the park.
Very windy! Hats need a chin strap. Volcanic grit blowing means long sleeves and long pants really help. Anything not attached WILL blow away. But amazing views and well worth going for this volcano fan!
Do not expect to see steam or lava even if it is called the Volcanoes National Park. Ranger Wendy is very passionate about the park and was very helpful in providing a briefing about the area and it's history (including cultural myths about Goddess Pele). There are hiking trails that you can go to and they were pretty easy I was fine hiking with slippers (flip flops) only. Make sure you have something to eat because there's no cafes or restaurants nearby and the restroom is a compost toilet with no sink which may throw some people off Important: only opens Wednesdays until Fridays so plan accordingly!
Check before coming, as not open every day. Very small visitor center, but rangers very helpful. Beautiful and varied landscapes and views with numerous well maintained trails of various degrees of difficulty. Best part is there are very few people on the trails, so no congestion. Definitely a little known spot to take advantage of if you enjoy hiking and want to see another side of Hawaii.
Surreal place to visit. Bring a jacket for the high elevation. Park is open 24 hours but Visitors Center closes at 8 pm. For spectacular night viewing get to the top before dusk as the 3 parking lots fill up fast. Volcano house has viewing deck open to the public.
