The Ingalls Homestead is a MUST visit!! My kids loved how they were able to see where Laura lived and the books came alive for them!! The grounds are immaculate and the employees were wonderful, especially Joan (she was amazing). It costs $20/person. The kids got a pony ride, we rode the wagon to the school house and learned a few things about the school. We also made corn cob dolls, ropes, shucked corn and ground wheat. The most beautiful kittens were in the barn along with a new calf. So many beautiful animals we were able to see. There are also restrooms on site with a gift shop attached. It appeared to have camping lots as well. Totally worth a visit. It ended up being one of my kids’ favorite places on our roadtrip.
Love this place. We camped in the rv area(4 spots available), and found it just fine. The exhibits are educational and the people working the exhibits are very kind and knowledgeable. Great store, clean bathrooms, I would stay here again.
Phenomenal living history experience for all ages, but especially for kids! Our three and five year old children would have stayed all day! We have been reading LIW with our five year old daughter, and this truly brought it to life for her! The shanty, dugout, homestead house, covered wagon ride, doing laundry the settler way, making their own ropes, etc. Etc.! Thank you for creating such an exceptional place for kids (and adults) to learn about the Ingalls family and history!
One of THE best stops on ALL of our road trips!! So much to do hands on and the property is very peaceful. Only wish we knew you could stay in a wagon, cabin or camp. Adding that to the list for next year.
Good wholesome content. Family friendly. Glad we drove 1.5 hours to visit. Thank you for the hospitality and enjoyable experience. Our 2 year old had a wonderful time.
As a homeschool mom, this place is a dream. 😊 My kids got to play with kittens, ride a horse, and learn about life on the prairie.
We camped here for three days. It was an awesome experience and a great place to camp with our motorhome. We took the tour of the homestead land and it was great. They really show you everything about how the Ingalls family lived and what they had to do to survive in all kinds of situations. There were hands on activities for children to do and for children at heart to do if you wanted too. Joan Nancy and Tim were amazing staff who were there to make your experience the best it could ever be. Thanks for a wonderful experience while we stayed here. Maria and Tim from Michigan
If you are a Laura Ingalls Wilder fan like I have been since childhood, De Smet, South Dakota has much history to explore! The small visitors center will provide a free map with options for touring. One can choose a ticketed tour with a personal guide with entrance into the historic homes, or a self-guided tour using the map, which does not include entrance into the buildings and homes! Either way will envelope you into the sights, sounds, and history surrounding the Ingalls/ Wilder families! If you are near De Smet, SD, it is definitely worth the stop!!

My kids have wanted to stop here since we read through all of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books. We arrived close to closing time so we didn’t have the opportunity to go in the tour and opted to drive to the Homestead about 2 miles away to spend more time there since they were open later. Cute gift shop with handmade items. My daughter picked out a doll just like Laura had. Employees were very friendly and helpful! Would highly recommend this stop if you’re in South Dakota.
Very interesting Tour. Loved to see where the books were inspired. Was one of my favorite growing up and the TV show as well. If you’re a fan you will love this tour. The staff is so knowledgeable and Kind.
Very interesting small museum section in the first building. They offer a guided tour that is very informative. $16 adults $8 children for the guided tour. Tour lasts 1.5 hours.
This was an awesome tour of where Laura's family lived. The first house, the one Pa built later, the school Laura and Carrie attended, and a replica schoolhouse that Laura would have taught school in. Well worth the $18 for a very well detailed tour.
Our tour was led by Zoe and she was an absolute delight. She was smart, knowledgeable and had a lovely personality. She actually taught 2 Laura super fans some stuff we did not know! This is a great tour with lots of interaction and hands on learning. It is definitely worth the price.
Well worth the $18 to access the exhibits and inside of the first school and surveyor house. Our guide Zoey shared lots of information with the 2:30 tour group over 90+ minutes that included 6 family groups spanning 3 generations. We considered just walking the grounds rather than paying admission, but the visit was greatly enriched the experience. Recommend visiting the exhibit room for 30-50 minutes prior to the tour to refresh memories and provide more context about the lives of 3 generations of Ingalls.
We had a fantastic tour of the historic homes. Our guide did an amazing job and really knew everything about the Ingalls family and how they lived and told me things I didn’t know. Thanks for a wonderful experience. Thanks Maria and Tim from Michigan
Very interesting and well preserved. This is a non profit and the guide has alot of knowledge and cares deeply for this property. If you've ever read and of Laura Ingalls Wilders books... it's a must see!

I really enjoyed my visit. The proprietor, whose family also owns The Ingalls Homestead, knows everything about De Smet and the Ingalls family. It was a pleasure to talk with her. The shop has fun souvenirs too. A must stop for Laura Ingalls Wilder fans!
Very large store with very little product. It was a bit underwhelming. I expected more.
Very nice welcome center for local information.
Absolutely wonderful, friendly & helpful employees!

A quick little museum highlighting De Smet's history outside of the Ingalls family. Very well done and worth 30 mins on your time if you're stopping by the Ingalls museums
We could’ve spent much more time here, but highly recommended stop for adults and younger people so they can appreciate more history!
This place is full of treasures. Really brought us back. And the schoolhouse with the Harvey Dunn art and bios is not to be missed.

As were were touring through South Dakota, we came upon this beautiful historical gem. Had no idea the Ingles family was buried here! The graveyard is very well kept with signs directing tourists to the Ingles grave sites.
Being a fan of the “Little House on the Prairie” TV Series, I decided to travel to De Smet to visit some of the sited directly related to the Ingalls Family. The De Smet Cemetery was my final stop during my visit to the area. This is the final resting place of Charles (Pa) Ingalls, Caroline (Ma) Ingalls, two of their children, Mary and Carrie along with Infant Baby Boy Wilder. The cemetery is located on a dirt road, a couple of miles south of town. Don't let the dirt road discourage you, it is well maintain, or at least it was when I visited. I got directions from on of the ladies at the Ingalls Homestead Visitors Center. Once you arrive a the cemetery there are signs directing you to the Ingalls Family Graves. The graves a located "at the top of the cemetery" as one staff member put it which is along the cemetery road in the very south end of the cemetery.
After several weeks of genealogical research I was a bit disappointed that none of my ancestors were famous. Just farmers whose sons were drafted into the different American wars. Then I find they were contemporaries of the Ingalls family and are buried along side them in the De Smet cemetery. In the photo, the old man is my Grandfather. The baby is my father. My Grandfather's little grave marker just says "SAM." I don't think his widow could afford anything else.
Had to visit the Ingalls gravesite was beautiful.
We loved the history of the Ingalls Family but felt the grounds were a bit unkempt. It needed mowing badly.
Interesting to see but hard to mark 5 stars on a cemetery when the 5ith star means you love it.
Hello I love this found online looks like a fine.resting place for the Ingalls thanks for showing bye fan always Elizabeth e Culligan Boca raton
