This is a great park! I wish it wasn't such a drive to get to, but the remoteness is what makes it great with a clear view of the night sky and way less crowded than most other parks. There are a lot of great hikes that you could spend days doing and the cave tour was fantastic. Small visitor center, but they have everything you'd expect and a nice restaurant and picnic area.
The hike up the Bristlecone Pine Trail to the glacier was beautiful. The trail was well maintained. You can jog a lot of it, but I'm glad I wrore 3/4 hight boots for the larger stones nearer the top of the hike. (10,913' at the trail end) There was a short 0.15 mile spur to a tiny lake that had a view that made it with the extra couple minutes. Pit toilets at the trailhead if you wondered.) the loot was almost full when I arrived at about 10 AM and over full (people using"extra" space) to park when I got back to the lot at 1PM.
This was an cool park but very limited in Mid-October. Most of the scenic drive was closed and only a few hikes at bottom were accessible. While enjoyed it, it was challenging and didn’t get to see the most scenic parts due to the snow.
Unique park to visit in the summer/early fall. It’s out of the way but well-worth it. The summer night sky from the wheeler scenic drive pullouts is the best I’ve ever seen. Wheeler peak summit is a tough but rewarding trail. The bristlecones are neat, given their age and rarity. The caves are an easy and high-yield activity.
Detoured to Great Basin on our way to Vegas. Weather prohibited Wheelers peak and we did not reserve spots for the cave tour so I would recommend doing this in advance. The trails were beautiful in winter and the ancient trees were very unique. Great hiking trails so I recommend allowing yourself at least one day to explore. Weather can shift quickly at high altitude so bring warm clothes if you go in fall or winter.
We had a great time here! We stayed in Baker Creek campground the first night and did the Glacier hike. Beautiful hike. Made the trek up to Wheeler Peak campground, which had amazing views, and did the Summit hike. It didn’t disappoint - about 8.7 miles and almost 3,000 foot elevation change. The last bit is straight up! Don’t miss out on Lehman Cave, do the 60 minute tour! Also, the Ranger-led astronomy program was cool, got to see a lot of stars that you normally don’t see due to city light.
Great Basin is off the beaten path. Baker, NV has a population of about 60 so there are not many amenities available, however, the park itself had many great trails to explore. Easy drive up to the higher elevation with some scenic pullovers on the way to enjoy. I would give the park 5 stars but lack of restaurants and grocery stores (closest is in Ely 70 miles away) drops it to 4 stars. Part of what I loved about this park is how it changed my perception of Nevada. We saw snow on the mountains, elk in the forest and flowing streams; i.e., not typical dessert scenery yet just outside the park is dessert so sunrise/sunset has spectacular colors and stargazing was incredible.
Third time here. Just as spectacular as first time. This small but high alpine mountain range sticks up out of one of the more desolate deserts in Nevada. Peaks hit 13,000 plus feet, still have snow on them, and a small glacier. Made mostly of marble with some quartzite with beautiful colors, stripes and patterns Has large cave with amazing formations. Has a very diverse mixed pine and spruce forest with mountain mahogany and a grove of ancient bristlecone pines. Has some very nice rushing, roaring streams, a great one runs behind upper and lower Lehman campgrounds. Has 2 alpine lakes. Lots of hiking trails and some mountaineering areas. Just remember, no water during summer of 2025, get tickets for cave tours online, always sold out in person . Also it is seriously in the middle of nowhere. It is an 8 to 10 hour drive from Reno with basically no services but gas and 4 restaurants the whole way. The gateway town of Baker has an unmanned gas station, card only and a motel that sells travel and camping oriented food and supplies. The only restaurant food is at Lehman cave visitor center. There are small towns in Utah that have food and gas 3 plus hours away. You must be prepared to visit this park . It is well worth the effort.
Baker Archaeological Site

This is a small archaeological site that gives visitors insight into the Fremont culture that lived here 700 years ago. The trail guide (there were 3 in the box) is well done and invaluable. It also has a pit toilet and picnic tables.
A sun shade and picnic tables for large groups unlikely to ever arrive. The information sign has no meaningful info re the site and there were no paper trail guides to be had. Would be spectacular night sky location.
You'll have to go down a dirt road for maybe half a mile. The dirt road was well maintained, no special vehicle needed. It's not too far from the main highway. There really isn't much to look at, I made the mistake of thinking an archaeological site is the same as ruins - I was pretty much looking at an empty field. There is a little guide book that gives you information as you pass the numbers on a short hike. The main archaeological site was not much to look at. The booklets are the main attraction because they give you a lot of information about what the archaeologists found. I was there for maybe 15 minutes. It would be a great spot for lunch or a barbecue. There's beautiful views of the mountains, and that was worth the stop.
This is a lovely walk in the desert with signs that point to where they found and reburied things to preserve them. The views are stunning and there is 1 single picnic area and 1 group picnic area and vault toilet.
Archaeological sight has some ruins and a little information, but not enough information to really thrill us. Hotter than H - E - double hockey sticks out there and no shade, not a mystery to me why the original inhabitants left... It's free. There's a vault toilet. We had the place to ourselves. Plan on spending 1/2 an hour, no more.
There were three different species of lizards we spotted along the trail, that was the highlight. There is a guidebook and it's definitely a cool concept but since all of the archeology has been removed (understandable as it protects it) there isn't much to actually see at the sites, they've also been reburied. I think it would be cool if there were at very least photographs of some of the pieces.
Interesting site, nice covered picnic spot. There was only one tattered, beat up book that tells about the history of the site and what each station is. There needs to be a few more books so more visitors can use and return them, possibly laminated to protect the pages. The book is full of good information and is the key to understanding the site. Its awesome the site is free, but I would have donated had there been a drop box.
Not much remaining but interesting to see and think about people out here long ago. ...I dont know why people think its ok to trample the dirt perimeters of these dwelling. It literally all that's remaining as it is

The Lehman Caves are probably the most beautiful and interesting cases that we have ever been in. They are extensive, the hour tour is recommended at least. The formations are fascinating! Bats are there but not where you can see them. The NP Rangers do a wonderful job of the tour, highly recommended!!
So cool. Very informative, like a mini museum. The ranger told me about the astronomy lecture and star gazing that night with their super high tech telescopes. I'm so happy I stayed and got to see the moon like never before. If you're planning on coming here (unlike myself who just decided to drive here on a whim) make a reservation online to see the caves BEFORE coming. I will definitely do that next time!!! If you have a National Parks Passport, you can get stamped here and the Great Basin Visitor center too! They're less than 10 min away from each other but do close at 5pm
The visitors center opens at 8 for walk up tickets for a cave tour. We were advised to get there at 7AM and I’m glad we did because there was already a long line. Keep in mind that this was Labor Day weekend so I doubt it would be that busy any other time. Luckily, we were able to snag 2 tickets for a 30 minute tour of the Gothic Palace. There are restrooms, a gift shop, and a cafe, which was reasonably priced.
Well worth the admission to take a tour inside the caves. The tour guide was interesting and gave some history and unique insights about the caves. There are some formations such as the parachutes that are rare to see. Lehman Caves is within Great Basin National Park so there are other sites to see close by.
Spectacular stalactites and stalagmites in varying shades of gray. Interesting history and geology of the cave. Half of the tours are by reservation but if you didn’t make reservations, half of the tours are walk up but you need to get there early. Minimal cost- around $12 per person. Cave is a pleasant consistent temperature and tour is a very easy 15 minute walk.
we drove 6 hours and we were 10 minutes late for our timed entry. Unfortunately we did not get to go into the caves. You must purchase tickets in advance. As soon as the online option allows which I believe is 3 months before your planned arrival. They have a nice short information nature walk around and above the caves.
Most cave you can visit, are worth visiting, in my view. Including this one. It is famous for its “shield” formations. But I’d not consider it “a destination”. - if you are there and there ticket - go. Otherwise, there many other things. The tickets online are sold out weeks ahead. But there is usually some availability in the morning.
It’s like entering another world. This cave has been very well maintained and regulated and it’s an incredible experience! We had to arrive early to get first come first serve tickets but waiting wasn’t too bad and once they opened they got everyone through very quickly. Your guide was funny and really knowledgeable, don’t leave Great Basin without touring this cave!
