My wife and I took this trip with a little apprehension. We had heard stories of how steep the trail was and I was worried my wife would get off her mule and walk. The guides were very reassuring and watchful over us, my wife did just fine and we enjoyed a spectacular and beautiful trip down the mountain trail. The tour of Kalaupapa and the area gives me great respect for the history of the area. Very grateful this mule ride service is available.
I'm writing this review many years after taking this tour. But I remember vividly really enjoying it. My husband and I got complete opposite Mules, his wanted to lead and bolted for the front and mine was super chill and laid back, it was quite funny but we didn't get to do the trail together. I felt safe the whole time, guides were nice and explained everything prior. The trail was a little nerve-racking at some times with the steep declines but we managed. Both of us had a great time. I hope you open again soon!
We flew into Kalaupapa because the trail is closed to hikers and mules due to rock slides. Flying is the only way to get in and see where Father Damian helped those afflicted by Hansen’s disease (leprosy) It’s a 5 min flight .We had a very passionate tour guide today who works on Fridays. We absolutely loved the tour, site seeing and guide. Lots of history ! Not for little kids. Need to be 16 years or older, no exceptions. I recommend bringing snacks to get you through the day. Once in a life time event worth the money. It was cold and we did not dress properly. Wear layers !
What an incredible experience, I'd give this more than 5 stars if I could! Everything from the incredible views, the friendly and knowledgeable guides, the dependability of the mules and the history of of Kalaupapa was amazing. My husband and I were a bit concerned at first when we saw how steep and muddy the trail was but after about 10 minutes we truly learned to trust the mules, they knew exactly what they were doing! My arm was a bit sore the next day from holding on so tight but not bad at all. I would definitely recommend this ride to anyone, it was the highlight of our trip to Molokai!
Must do if you are in Molokai-book early on line or call directly. This company is very knowledgeable about the history of Kalaupapa & the mules are amazing! We (family of 4) were never worried or scared going up & down this amazing ride. The mules are sure-footed and boy, do they work hard hauling us! Glad we rode the mules instead of hiking. This is a once in a lifetime experience and totally well worth it. Scenery is quite amazing.
We purchased the hiking tickets and loved it. However, the tour was... unconventional. It didn't cover much history of kalaupapa, instead it seemed more like a sermon filled with personal anecdotes of the guide. The hike back up left us sore for a few days after.
The mule ride down offers plenty of breathtaking views! The history of the kualapapa area is incredible!
I lived there for about 4months awesome place and people.

A steep & uneven 3.5-mi. trail leads to this scenic park that preserves historical leper colonies.
Slide 1 of 8
The Kalaupapa leper colony was a great opportunity to see self-sacrifice in action by both Saint's Damien and Marianne Cope. Although, you must be sponsored to visit Kalaupapa, it is well worth it. Father Patrick is a excellent guide. Also Sister Barbara Gene is a fantastic guide too.
Walked out to the viewpoint. The peninsula colony is still closed to visitors so this is as close as we could get. Made the little jaunt to see the sacred rock as well.
Super fun hike, regardless if you enjoy the history of Father Damien, which you will. Setting-up entry into the park is difficult and some hikers were turned around because they did not get a sponsor to enter Kalaupapa.
Serene, peaceful, and beautiful. If you ever get the opportunity to go here, go at least once. The history of all who lived here as their residence and those who came selflessly to serve them is incredible. Pray for the handful of patients remaining and for all those who keep this place Kalaupapa.
For anyone who is visiting Hawaii or from Hawaii it's a must-see. Take the tour if you're not able to hike fly-in. It is worth it. Unbelievable views, humbling history, a place with a lot of power or as we say in Hawaii "Mana
This is Sacred Ground! If you stop and quiet yourself, you can feel the earth cry out the anguish of the 103 years of exiled people banished from family and friends. Then there are the rays of light shining through the darkness of people who came to help. Among whom are St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. The two Hawaiian saints who spent their life to bring hope in the midst of what seemed hopeless. There is history here that needs never be forgotten.
Kalaupapa National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located in Kalaupapa, Hawaiʻi, on the island of Molokaʻi.......soo beautiful place in world I loved it soo clean greenery place in world 🤗
Rode mules down. Great adventure. Not scary at all unless you have fear of heights.

Coming here to see and understand the historical significance of this place will make you a better person. You will understand how people are capable of cruel things to other people, and yet how people can exhibit such great compassion towards others. This church and those who were here, father Damien and others, during a time of disease (Leprosy), ministered to those who were left to die. This place celebrates a great love that God provides to those who suffer.
