Big hilltop monument with scenic views of the city honoring heroes of the Dominican Restoration War.

The **Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration** (Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración) is a prominent landmark located in **Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros**, the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic. This monument honors the heroes of the **Restoration War** (1863–1865), a conflict in which the Dominican Republic fought to regain its independence from the annexation by Spain. Standing tall at 67 meters, the monument is not only a tribute to the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought during this pivotal period in Dominican history, but also a symbol of national pride. The monument’s architectural design is impressive, featuring a large obelisk surrounded by sculptures and inscriptions that commemorate the country's struggle for sovereignty. Visitors can also enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding area from the top of the monument, which adds to its appeal as both a historical site and a scenic viewpoint. The **Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration** is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the Dominican Republic’s rich history and culture.
The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration is a beautiful and iconic place to visit in Santiago. It’s a great spot to stop and take in the full panoramic view of the city — absolutely stunning, especially around sunset. The monument itself is impressive and rich in history. The only downside is that there are no souvenir options like fridge magnets or pins, which is a shame for such a special and meaningful landmark. It would be nice to bring home something to remember the visit. Still, definitely worth the stop if you’re in Santiago!
Fresh, Windy, Historic and. Surrounded by restaurants, hotels, malls and other places of interest. Right in the center of the city and about 10-15 minutes away from the international airport. easy to get to with plenty public parking. Buy the ticket at the main entrance to go up yo the 5th floor where you can enjoy a wonderful 360 degrees view of the city and mountains. Your ticket will help to maintain the cleaning and other areas like the green area etc. Many guys (seller of beer) will approach you to sell you a refreshing beer, go ahead and enjoy it. It’s a secure place and don’t panic if you see law enforcement driving around even in motorcycles or walking, it helps to keep the city even safer. Did I mention the rides on the horse in carriage? Don’t miss it, I love it at night :) it’s romantic and tradition of the city itself. The city is becoming more attractive because in the pass year or two to the date, many changes in the architecture have occurred. New high rises and better public ground transportation are being built, the value has grown and it’s a perfect time to invest for those interested.
Me encanta el Monumento de Santiago!! Love the Monument!! Lots of cool restaurants and bars around to enjoy with a great view.
So beautifull to see it in the night.
The most popular tourist attraction in Santiago. It’s wonderful to see in the daytime but at night it’s just as beautiful as it is lit up with the colors of the Dominican flag. The views from the top are fabulous. I can imagine what it’s like when the museum is open and you can climb up the monument.
The place is a beautiful reminder of the rich heritage and history of a gorgeous country. The vibe was really nice for a Sunday evening. Lots of families and children hanging out peacefully. It was almost like being at a popular mall except there were no stores.
Iconic. When I see this monument, I know the exact location. As far as I know, I don’t think there’s another one like it which is what makes it so special. It’s not huge (not too small either), but it’s beautiful. Santiago for the win.

What a super cool experience! Eugene, our guide has been with the company for 36 years and spoke 5 languages! He was super friendly with the employees and shared a lot of information. It’s obvious the company has a very good culture and rich in history. I highly recommend this tour. Be sure to book a day or more in advance.
The tour was absolutely amazing! Eugenio is incredibly knowledgeable and charismatic-he made the experience both fun and informative. The store had a fantastic selection of high-quality products at very reasonable prices. Highly recommend this tour and shopping experience to anyone visiting!
Fantastic personal tour & experience. We enjoyed our guide, Miguel, he was very knowledgeable & spoke excellent English. Hands on tour that enabled us to see the entire making of cigars. It was a great surprise. I shall enjoy the box of cigars I bought in the coming weeks.
One of the highlights of our time in the DR, highly recommended. Eugene was a magnificent and engaging guide and we loved the tour, and came away having learned a lot, and with a souvenir or two!
Free tour - must call ahead to book. English tours available. Free cigar. Interesting information. Recommend even though I don't like smoking..... The coffee is really bad. Not sure if it is supposed to be for espresso (dark roast), but it taste bad for drip...
When you walk onto the campus the smell is kind of reminds me of pipe tobacco but it is everywhere in the air and absolutely delicious
Eugene was an amazing guide. He is extremely knowledgeable about every aspect of cigar making. Definitely a must visit even if you are a novice like myself. They also have a nice store to purchase all different types of cigars.
We had the best experience here or anywhere. A visit to the factory is a must, in my opinion. Our guide, Eugene, taught us so many things. We certainly didn’t leave empty handed! The gift shop was amazing!

A Santiago cultural gem! Stunning modern architecture houses exceptional exhibits focused on Dominican art & history. The permanent collection is profound, & rotating shows are always intriguing. Knowledgeable staff & excellent guided tours enhance the experience. Serene atmosphere invites contemplation. Don't miss the library or auditorium events. Essential for understanding Dominican identity. Beautifully curated, impeccably maintained, and truly enlightening. A must-visit for art lovers & history buffs. Free admission (check hours) makes it accessible. Highly recommended!
Great experience, we went with kids and they enjoyed everything. Like to learn about our origins and would love to go back.
Really nice. The private collection is quite extensive, with a big range of art pieces (no pictures can be taken in that room tho). Otherwise, the other section was quite informative with a lot of history and art as well. Note: the second floor was closed due to a new exhibit in the works. Highly recommend a few hours to stop by and see amazing local art, alongside learning about local history and culture.
This is one of the best art center and museum in the Dominican Republic. Founded by one of the richest family, which make their extraordinary incomes with production and selling of world famous Dominican cigars. But each Dollars they win with your smoking pleasure it's worth to see in this nice place. The architecture is a little bit modern from the last century and from outside it's look like a supermarket ... but inside they have 2 levels of exhibition. The ground floor has a very nice permanent exhibition about the island Hispaniola and the DR too. Also there is one room for the collection of Centro Leon. At the second level they have monthly changing special exhibitions of several artists. Sometimes they make a large one about all the actual art in DR. The Centro Leon has also a nice museum shop and a good restaurant too. Due the month there are several evening events for the local in-crowds and pseudo-bohemians. But you as an worldtraveller will enjoy the fine and quiet place!
It was nice and quiet. The gift shop is a expensive. I would avoid it. It's small. Only a couple of exhibits.
A truly amazing art gallery and place to spend the day with the family. They have five or six galleries as well as a bird sanctuary, water fountain, cafe and places where you can picnic or take photos.
The is a great place to visit 😊 there is art and history 😀 and they have a restaurant and outdoor seating with lots of shade
This review is regarding the food in the cafeteria. Delicious. We had the pasta and a wrap and it was on point! So even if u don’t visit the museum you can always stop by and hve lunch, dinner or a drink.

Beautiful place to enjoy with kids
This place needs to be renovated. I did enjoy my visit because I looked past that. But i had friends who came and left right away due to the water being too dirty. For the sake of hygiene, and health please renovate this place. Very colourful. Beautiful constructions. Food a bit too pricey. Good music.
Excellent experience with this water themed park , all the attractions are well worth it. The only down size in my opinion is the food, its a very basic buffett tourist style type food. I highly recommend the Dolphin interactions, specially if you got kids..
This place should be closed. The park has potential but it is obvious that it is not maintained. The slides do not look safe, the water is not clean and anywhere you sit smells like urine. The pictures online definitely deceive. I do not recommend this place, it was cheap, yes, but we walked in and right out cause my water park loving kids didn't enjoy anything they saw.
The place looks much nicer online than it actually is, 10 years ago I’m sure it was beautiful but they have not made any repairs and is not well kept. Paint is chipping everywhere. Pool was not clean, lots of debris, and workers just sitting around. They did not turn on any water slides until 2pm. Only one small section worked. But you still pay the price for the whole park. I wouldn’t go back, but the kids had fun anyway on the 2 slides that were open.
Unfortunately the place is definitely not what it used to be, poorly maintenance, so many hazards, the pool was basically paint water, some tubes were leaking, damn near about to break. Someone please close it down and clean it renovate it.
I arrived very late they were about to close. People are very friendly. But i think this place has a great potential but i have a feelings that it is not well maintained. The structure, the railings are rusted. The store is closed and not many choices in term of food. It can be improved.
The place needs some TLC but great for a sunny afternoon with kids. Very lively. Water quality is so so.

Just wanted to do something different for shopping, local shopping is ok but some shops can be very chaotic looking for sizes, it was nice and clean in the mail but like so many malls it is a little more expensive, but it was nice to just walk around and look in the stores,
If you are tourist. Do not go into this place. It's hot. Nothing to see. The food is bad and terribly expensive. There are more people to chase you to eat there then actually clients. It was the worse stop in my whole trip in RD. I do not recommend.
Decent mall. But too many of the same shops. Not enough variety. I used the supermarket and pharmacy. Parking attendent tried to rip me off. I only had a 50dop note. She gave me back 20c in coins. I asked for my note back. She took the 20c and I gave her another 10c coin. So I only paid 10c. I don’t speak Spanish so she thought she was being slick. I went back for the supermarket and another lady was there. I also bought a phone accessory.
Lots of store. You probably can find everything there. A lot of places to eat. Clean public restroom. There's a Jumbo supermarket on the ground floor. I went to the Mall to go to Carribean Cinema to watch a movie. The theater was clean and the seats are comfortable.
Some people we’re helpful, others had a bad attitude.. but it was chill overall and found the shoes I wanted
I like Jumbo, its always fun to go and see wide selection of goods. Jumbo is by far the people's Supermarket. Low price, and wide selection.
Some of the places are empty. I can find a lot of store but not any apple store there. In term of food to eat it is not bad. In the ground floor there is a beautiful fountain. But i still think they could do a better job on the roof.
Convenient and reasonable options for shopping. Prices for clothing and shoes seem very comparable to the U.S. so it's nothing at all cheap if you're looking for good deals to compare to the U.S.

Nice church. In a busy part of the city. Was closed , but it was amazing to see the building in the outside.
Really nice church with main square next to it. It was closed during the day.
A beautiful church in the middle of the city worth seeing. I'm still amazed at the ornate architecture and money spent on these churches, including BOSE speakers everywhere. Then outside the church you will have beggars and the poorest of the poor. Either way, it's still a site worth seeing if you are visiting Santiago.
The Cathedral is being keep on excellent shape. Is a must go in you want to learn about the history of Santiago, Dominican republic.
For a 500 years old church, it's Immaculately maintained. Very nice place to visit and worship as well!
A lot of history in this place. The tour was amazingly informative. Even if you are not a church member, you will learn about the history and arts of Santiago.
A beautiful and remarkable place to encounter with God. This church is historical and very important in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 ♥
Nothing interesting - if you are interested in sacral architecture you will be disappointed.

Place has a bunch of stuff here too much too write down for a review. But there's allot of handmade things here which I love personally. Also has a restaurant upstairs if you need a bite to eat or drink. Has a little bit of everything here it's totally a place to visit if you're looking for gifts.
A very popular place where you can find any Sort of present for your loved ones when you travel! You have all kind of little store with “Dominican” stuffs like larimar, ámbar, caretas, tambores, dominós, mamajuana, etc etc etc . The only thing is, you need to walk, parking is almost impossible ! The infrastructure is very old, as you can see you have some detriment in the structure, but in general I’ll said is a good and very happy place to be. 🙏🏻 you have a fountain in the middle of this inside market plaza, and is very nice just to sit there and contemplate.
That place is beautiful and you can find everything that you looking for
If you are a wheelchair user, this is not the place for you. Great place but not wheelchair friendly at all.
Lots of energy here. Place to trade gold and silver.
Good place to look for cheap stuff.
It's crazy hectic in here and there is no actual indication of where the market is so you have to know what you need exactly and then ask the locals where to go. When you go in there are different small sections of people selling their products. If you are scared of corona or this isn't the place for you because it gets packed. There is so much traffic. Luckily what I needed was in the back close to another exit. I survived it and may not be going back unless I absolutely need to. On the other hand I didn't really mind it because it's different. You don't really get to experience these things in the states so it was interesting to see.
A must visit while in Santiago!

We unfortunately arrived to early and did not get to go inside, however I was still able to learn some great history by walking outside
The fort is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with free admission. The indoor museum has no regular open time and was closed when I visited. The fort is about a kilometer west of the monument, and the city is fairly walkable. No parking is available at the fort. The entrance and interior of the fort is wheelchair accessible, although the ramp is steep. Little signage is available except for the plaques on the statues. The entrance of the fort is guarded by soldiers and police in uniform. While the fort does not have the same glamor as some other Santiago attractions, this is a decent stop for military history enthusiasts.
Super calm on a Sunday, kids road their bikes, and it was just us there. Loved it! I was able to relax while my kids were on their bikes
I didn't visit the museum as they are already closed for the day but I still walked around inside the fort structure and appreciated the peace a few steps outside the bustling city center.
Very nice to see history that's outside.
A weird melange of objects, with little explanation (and none in English)
Not much to see here besides some old vehicles and a nice view of the city plus some statues of the old generals. The museum was closed. My kid loved it since he was able to climb on the old military vehicles etc. so because my kid loved it and thought it was cool going there in giving it 5 stars.
Now used as military offices, etc. But interesting metal sculptures and bronze busts of heroes.

Nice experience. Close to different tourist places. Clean rooms, and a variety of food in the breakfast buffet. The service was also kind and friendly. The casino is under reconstruction, but I'm not into it.
The hotel seats just about 5 minutes away from the monuments of heros. Hospitality is great , very friendly staff and overall very tidy. Breakfast not the best but tasty scramble eggs with cassava and or plantains along qith pickled red onions to ticket your taste buds and coffee of course. No lunch served. Near by is an outstanding Chinese restaurant serving favorite delights no regrets.
Decent hotel. Right next to the monument of heroes and only 10 minutes to Agora mall and other stores.
It's OK for the area but next door the Chinese jade restaurant is off the. Meat rack
I booked 2 days, and I only stayed 1 night. My reason for the 5 star review is I got my refund back for the second night on my credit card. I am Canadian and North American. They do business properly. Trust Hotel Matum. Room was decent. In the heart ❤️ of Santiago l.
Staff is very helpful, food was delicious, place was overall clean. BUT... The pool was a bit neglected. I didn't use it just based on the looks of it, and I didn't see anyone in it either. The front sign can use a little maintenance as well.

Very wonderful park with so much history involved with the place. Definitely a place to experience. This area is a popular relaxation spot for local people. The area is generally wheelchair accessible and has plenty of benches, although these are typically filled with locals. The area is not a standard tourist zone, with few if any hawkers and minimal signage. Only on-street parking is available, but Dominican rideshare services are inexpensive and convenient. A driveby of the area would allow you to see major buildings and monuments without leaving the comfort of the vehicle.
So beautiful and calming I spent hours here soaking in all beauty of Dominican lifestyle.
Very nice place to be! Security 24/7 nice music and view
A small nice park to take a break from the bustling city life.
Even though we went at night, this place is still really beautiful! It also has a few bars and restaurants around that are very nice and cozy. So happy I came back, it is so different to how it used to be 5 years ago.

The room had no cold water. They had to send the bellman up to fix it and he still didn’t. He had no respect and kept referring to me as “Negra” which I know means black girl but I’m a guest and not his friend. He had an attitude when I told him the water wasn’t hot enough (room temp). I wish I picked somewhere else for my layover. That’s what I get for being cheap. I’d much rather spend the money and get something nicer. The walls were cracked up and the showers were rusted and the toilet was dirty and no wash cloths. I do not recommend at all. Wish I could give it 0 stars.

I went to the culture museum on the 3rd floor. It's an interesting exhibit about the history and culture of all the provinces in the Dominican Republic.
An absolute gem. Encourage everyone visiting Santiago should go there.
A very good place to get information about Dominican Republic in general and all the wonderful sites and places to see around the country.
Great space for art expositions and as an events venue. The staff is welcoming, there is lots of parking and the space is open and well distributed.
Very disappointed, I researched the the place before heading there. Once I got to the place I had to wait for the receptionist, I explained that I wanted to see the museum. She asked me to sit and I waited for her to return only to tell me that she was sorry but that the museum is only open by appointment and the minimum is 8 people to do a guided tour. I explained that I did not need a tour guide I could just walk the exhibit in my own, she said that all the lights were off and that it would take time to turn them on. I'm in the country for one week and I wasted part of the day on this venture. Please call ahead of time don't go by the Google site.
This convention center has been in operation for one year now. It has 4 large conference rooms on the 4th floor that can fit 300 persons. Palacio Consistorial is a government building and tourist attraction. A similar building has stood on this site since 1578, but earthquakes destroyed early iterations. Italian-Chilean architect Joaquín Toesca, also called Gioacchino Toesca, created a neoclassical building in 1790.
