An absolutely amazing museum! I have almost no interest in textiles and I was blown away. The first floor is original examples of textiles (which are amazing) and all sorts of artifacts. The second floor is modern examples of clothing from different areas in Chiapas. Sprinkle in beautiful artwork throughout the museum. And the building is stunning. The market outside is beautiful too. All this is free too! Do Not Miss This Experience!
An Outstanding Textile Museum – A Must-Visit for History and Culture Enthusiasts! I recently had the pleasure of visiting this incredible textile museum, and I can honestly say it exceeded my expectations. Best of all, entry was completely free, making it accessible to everyone. The museum is packed with a diverse range of exhibits, showcasing the rich history of textiles from various cultures and eras. Each display was thoughtfully curated, offering fascinating insights into traditional craftsmanship, techniques, and the cultural significance of textiles around the world. The building itself is a stunning piece of architecture, adding to the overall experience. Its elegant design and historic charm create a perfect setting for the exhibits. Unlike some other museums like the jade and amber museums, which often feel more like shops selling souvenirs, this museum is dedicated solely to education and preservation. It offers a genuine, immersive experience that truly highlights the artistry and cultural importance of textiles. Whether you're a history buff, an art lover, or simply looking for an enriching day out, this museum is definitely worth a visit. It’s a wonderful place to learn, appreciate craftsmanship, and enjoy a peaceful stroll through history. I highly recommend it to anyone passing through the area!
Incredible experience! One of the highlights of my trip to San Cristóbal! It’s fabulous to see the talent the pattern makers possess and it’s free! Don’t miss it 🤩🕺🏻
It's a nice, informative museum in an impressive building with good view of the city. I recently took a sewing course, so there was plenty of colour, stitch and pattern to study. I was there around 4pm on a Thursday, and I was the only one inside.
The "Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya" was an amazing experience. We came on a Sunday so the admission fee was free (0$ only on Sundays). It was a beautiful collection of textiles and artifacts from Guatemala and Mexico, I spent hours looking through their amazing collection of fabrics and weavings and quilts.
If you want to learn about San Cristobal's history this is a good place to start. They have in exhibition ceramic sculptures of the first civilization in the state also they have artifacts from the Spanish Conquest, but the best and my favourite part is the Textile exhibition, it's not a big exhibition but it has a lot of different textiles from Chiapas and from Guatemala.
The best textile museum I've been to in Mexico, absolutely top quality. Free to get in. Excellent ancient relics. Do not miss out.
FANTASTIC museum! One of the best museums dedicated to textiles I have ever been to (and I have been to many in many countries). Huge collection, wonderful service by the staff; you can see the reverence the Mayan textiles and its history are treated with. A favorite place in SanCris, and in México. GRACIAS for allowing us to witness the talent of such a marvelous culture.

We loved exploring this renovated hacienda of Danish Swedish explorers that did incredible work with the indigenous people of the region. This couple was so inspiring and you could literally feel the passion for their life's work in their desk and chair. A must visit museum when in the area!
I visited the museum, not the hotel. Although the museum is quite small, I spent about 30 minutes there. The exhibitions are well-curated, with information available also in English, and the building itself is beautiful. It's a nice spot if you have some spare time, but not a must-see in my opinion. It's conveniently within walking distance, and you won't need much time to explore it. Restrooms are available. A side note: it would be helpful if they could separate the museum and hotel on Google Maps to make reviews for each more distinct.
I went to visit the museum, and it is a truly amazing experience. The place itself is wonderful. Every room with information and pictures is delightful and, of course, to learn about all expeditions that Gertrude and Frans made to the Lacandon Maya Jungle is incredible.
Very interesting hotel with a deep history of indigenous people! It's a bit far from the city center, but it's worth staying there and supporting indigenous business! Price is very reasonable! Don't forget to check out their museum, back garden and chapel
Wow! You have to check out his museum and garden. The fact that they also have a small cafe and restaurant in the middle that is so quiet is just a bonus.
Lovely little museum! The story of the owners is truly inspiring. Recommend to anyone interested in the indigenous culture and history of Chiapas 🙏
One of my favorite little museums and gardens in San Cristobal. Wonderful place to meander and learn the history of this inspiring Swiss woman (and a bit on her Danish husband) and of many of the indigenous people they befriended and advocated on behalf of from the 1950s onwards. The gardens are a lovely place to sit in or to wander and be inspired. There is a small hotel and restaurant and a few other options here, all of which are on the grounds and in the original house where this couple and their adopted Mexican daughter lived and worked for decades.
Amazing museum to visits. It’s both a beautiful building and a record of two explores lives. Don’t miss it.

5 stars due to the best tour guide we could have asked for. This precious baby’s name is Ámbar. When we were on the first floor she showed up and then walked to the stairs to tell us to go up. And when she showed us the displays and waited for us to finish looking. Price for museum is about 30 pesos per person. Worth it due to the cat in my opinion. She lets you pet her.
A little disappointed, I read it was supposed to be a 3 hour visit but in reality it has very few pieces. The place is beautiful and the few pieces and specimens there are also beautiful and special however I would have liked more information on the trees and production, shaping and polishing. There is a video playing in loop with this information but I would have liked more hands on information.
This museum is a brand new museum, the building was a convent and an army station. About the ambar collection is significant and almost the information about how important ambar rock is important in Chiapas state. The visit is worth it, and entrance money is visible because the building is going through reconstruction.
I can't spend hours and hours in museums, especially when I have my teenage children with me, so this one was perfect: only $50 pesos to enter, and it has one large room with plenty of amber on display (see photos in other reviews) and enough information to tell the story of amber, from it's composition and formation, to mining and uses. It's definitely not overwhelming, but informative enough to know a bit more about amber. The videos were not working when we went through. The shop was very extensive as well, and didn't seem expensive. They also provide a certificate of authenticity with each piece we purchased. I love that they are restoring ex convents and housing museums in them. This ex-convent is being restored by a civil association and depends on donations and the entry fees of the amber museum to continue their efforts. But it's also cool to see the one finished side and the unfinished side opposite.
Beautiful collection of amber in a gorgeous convent currently under renovation, located in a charming hilly neighborhood.
A Must-Visit in San Cristobal. This museum is in a historical building convent. It keeps the most Amazing unique Amber collection with pride and care. If you are curious to see (or purchase) this million-years old rock this is a great place. We have visit the workshop and discussed with the artists that worked on the pieces and its director and curator. It was a great and authentic experience. We highly recommend you visit this place.
The Museum is very nice For a reasonable ~50 MEX pesos you can have a look at tons of beautiful pieces of amber, including fossils and intricate sculptures, there is a english brochure that they give you ( if you ask) and that helps for non-spanish speakers.
Nice, compact museum dedicated to Amber. Most of the focus is Chiapas. They also discuss the global history and use of amber. The building is historic which used to be a convent then later a prison. Fee is inexpensive, less than 2 USD. Allow at least an hour or 1.5 hours. Nice shop which includes certificate of authenticity. Staff is attentive, knowledgeable and helpful. Learn here before buying on the street or in the market. Spend a few minutes watching the videos at the end of the exhibit.

A nice walk into two orquídeas greenhouses. The visit offers one or two activities. You can visit both greenhouses and a two-hour hiking or just greenhouses. Due to time, I just visited the two greenhouses. I took all the time I needed, although it is not flowering season, there were a few orchids with flowers. It is worth the visit outside of the tourist area.
A really special place. Even out of season there were plenty of interesting orchids to look at. I also saw several hummingbirds! It is very peaceful and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I was unfortunately too late to do the hiking trail but it looked lovely too.
We paid 50 pesos per adult for the tickets, and our kids got in for free. The hike was quite challenging due to its steep incline, but the breathtaking scenery made it well worth the effort. It took us almost two hours to complete the entire loop, including several breaks to take in the stunning views and catch our breath. One of the highlights of the trip was definitely the botanical gardens along the trail—they were beautifully maintained and full of vibrant, exotic plants. Overall, it was a memorable experience that combined adventure with nature’s beauty.
I walked from el centro, and was hoping the 30-minute walk was with it. It was! Slow down in the orchid house. So many tiny orchids in bloom that others missed because they just walked quickly through without looking closely/carefully. It felt good to walk on dirt trails after a week in the city that is all concrete. 100 MXN for my admission. Totally worth it for the serenity and gorgeous property.
Nice place to run away from the city noise. There is some easy hike for a few hours into the "forest". Good for birdwatching. Just probably could be slippery after the rain. And need to pay 50pesos for it. Looks like, available at some days hike/tour with the guide, that should cost a bit more. Small garden + orangery full of orchids, quite cozy. As well with some bunch of birds, like hummingbirds :) I definitely recommend for nature and plants lovers. Friendly and cute staff:)
Nice trek, took us around 1h30 Enjoy the garden Tips, just take your Time
Wonderful place, especially for those having a green heart 💚. It comprises the orchid garden (there are more than orchids there) and the natural reserve. The tickets are sold separately (but they're not expensive). The natural reserve is a nice hill, which can be walked in 3 hours round trip (due to time I did not do it). If there is a group, you could have a guide through the orchid section. I highly recommend. Don Manuel knows a lot and is very passionate about all plants. Definitely a huge bonus when visiting this venue. All in all, one of the best outdoor activities to do in San Cristobal.
We really enjoyed our afternoon here. The trails are great ( wear good footwear) the pines are tall and the forest is beautiful. There is a cave down by the river that you can check out. The orchids in and out of the greenhouses and other flowers were absolutely stunning! Friendly staff, and easy place ( 30 min) to walk to from Centro San Cristobal.

Amazing museum, definitely worth a visit even if you don't have much time in San Cristobal. The pieces are beautiful, the presentation is on point and the accompanying information is quite interesting
Very interesting geological and cultural / anthropological displays of the history of jade in Mesoamerica. The English option is a simple booklet with translations of the signs. However, in the extremely dark exhibit halls, it's nearly impossible to read and to match up with the maps and artifacts. If you're lucky, you'll see a craftsman working but there is no interaction or explanation and, as much of the machinery is very loud and their have headphones and we don't, it doesn't encourage you to linger and watch. There was a sign advertising free Mexican liguor tastings but nothing was offered. Many options for purchase. Worth a short visit for good overview.
The museum was quite an interesting place to visit! It had a wide array of fascinating exhibits that captured my attention. However, I found it a bit disappointing that the guide provided all the information at the very beginning of the tour and then simply left us to explore on our own. This approach made it challenging to fully appreciate the details and context of each exhibit as we moved through the museum. Despite this, there were still many cool and intriguing items to see, which made the visit worthwhile.
The museum has a lot of potential and there's still some space to improve, that's why the 4 stars!
Enjoyed our visit to this museum where you will not only learn about jade but also about how various cultures used and appreciated the gem. Quite interesting. The museum store sells real jade so don't expect street and market prices. Low entrance fee. Allow one to 1.5 hours.
I don't know why this place got low reviews. It was small and yes, the pieces are reproductions, but it was highly informative and a fascinting blend of mesoamerican and geological history. They even had an English booklet to translate all the signs. There's a replication of Pakal's funeral tomb at the back which was also beautiful both for history buffs and the casual visitor alike. The gift shop was very expensive but treated like an extension of the museum (especially with the live, built-workshop) it was lovely to look at. Plus you get a discount at the Kakao museum with your ticket from here which makes for a nice afternoon combined.
Lots of pre-Columbian examples of jade statues, masks, figurines. Worth the 30 pesos. Much more than the pics posted.
Small cheap museum - quite kitsch - worth popping in if you are next to it but I wouldn’t put it at the top of your list.

Had s beautiful time at the Grutas el Arcotete, I didn’t go on a tour I took a colectivo is only $15 pesos just have to ask which one goes there I like to go on my own because I take as long as I need and nog rushed like sometimes by tour guide.
The caves are quite cool but overall an underwhelming experience if you are used to nature. Should you have some time to kill, it is worth a visit but don’t break your back trying to get here. The individuals working there are not friendly, greeted us with their hand out, and tried to keep my partner’s change. Entrance fees are 10 for the park and 15 for the caves. There is a 5 peso charge for bathrooms. The zip lining did not look very exciting. I saw no horses. The water is very polluted. There were a handful of rainbow salamander creatures which were quite beautiful. They did have snacks and drinks for sale as well as a restaurant on site. On departure, they wouldn’t let us take a marked taxi and wanted us to get into one of their own unmarked vehicles. I didn’t get the best vibes overall. We ended up taking a collectivo back, which you catch just up the road.
It’s pretty cool, but not really a destination. The cave is kind of interesting so if you just wanna get outside of town and do a little nature walk, I’d say it’s OK. One tip would be to take the collective vote bus as a taxi this sort of a rip off it basically will drop you off right in front of the entrance and save you a bunch of money
So magical, I can't believe that I almost didn't come here! Definitely take the time to also explore the fantastical gruta and to appreciate the forest canopy from above at the mirador! Just 15 pesos straight from the downtown area to the entrance of the park every 8 minutes until 6 in the evening. When I was there it was 10 to visit the arc and 15 to go into the gruta. Well worth it!
magic place, nice walks, fresh air, local people take so nice care🙏
The level of enjoyment you get from this place will depend on your expectations. If you are expecting a well organized, entertaining activities and lots to do, you might be disappointed. It doesn't have a lot of information, it is run by local indigenous people in a very laid back, simple way, and although there are different things to do, it is not overly entertaining in itself. The entry is $10 pesos p/person. There are grounds you can walk or bike through. Fun place to take photos. The natural arc rock is free. The Zipline is $150 per person, and it includes two ziplines. Was safe enough. To enter the grotto is $15 pesos per person. This is kind of different and fun. But crowd control is not practiced: it can get a bit cramped in some of the small places. Also hard access for overweight or really tall people. There were also option of boat rides, rappelling, camping and tightrope. But we didn't participate in those. My teenage children moatly enjoyed because of the novelty of the grotto, riding their bikes and the ziplines, and they had their drone and camera to play around taking cool photos. It would've been nice to take a picnic, or to rent a palapa and have a BBQ on the grill, but we didn't plan accordingly. Overall, it is a lovely spot for a day out in nature. It was so clean and fresh, and plenty of families were out and about enjoying the sunshine. It has a restaurant and a comedor selling snacks, but we didn't try those out either. I gave it 5 start because it is really is a nice place to visit, I loved the grotto, and the excuse to hang out with my family. But I also understand that it is not a highly modernized and efficient tourist attraction.
Beautiful and unique spot. There's an entry fee of 10 pesos per person for the park and then a further 15 pesos if you want to go into the caves. Definitely worth the extra 15, atleast once. Stunning and strikes a nice balance in eco tourism. Well looked after, but still allowing us to go in and enjoy the place.
Amazing natural place that is so close from San Christobal, just take a local bus! The caves are incredible and so much better than ever expected! Also just perfect for a lovely walk in nature or a picknick

Came here to see SanCris sunset so sat at the patio. Great view and drinks are reasonable. Extensive selection of tea. We checked out the vintage looking theatre, so cool, if there’s English subtitle I would go watch a documentary about Zapatista for sure.
Kinoki is a truly stunning place to see sunset. They have a wonderful tea selection and great service. Their food is okay, not bad my any means but certainly not going to be the best food in Mexico. It's truly a wonderful cultural space to support local artisans and community while also enjoying the gorgeous landscape that San Cristóbal has to offer.
I got just in time to find out a movie was about to being, we ordered Ham & Cheese Sandwich which was pretty good and drinks, started watching the movie with the complimentary popcorn and they brought the food to us. Definitely a good experience!
Their patios and especially the rooftop patio are the real stars here. They have a good tea, coffee and drinks menu. This is a favorite spot of mine to enjoy drinks and the view. The food is okay. Good pizza seems difficult to replicate in San Cristóbal. Service is usually attentive, prices are fair. I would recommend the drinks and the view.
Super charming place to watch a sunset! Wished we had more time to go to a movie here too, maybe next time!
We were here twice to watch the sunset on the terrace. The view is very nice and when it gets a little colder, you get ponchos. The prices are reasonable. The staff is helpful, but a little bit slow. In the same building there is also a cinema where you can watch independent movies.
Great location with a really cool vibe inside. The place is on the 2nd floor with lots of windows to enjoy the view and terrace for small tables of two. Not yet servicing alcohol, but good service and pizza.
One of my favorite places in Sancris. This time we just had time and my fried a Yellow Submarine (see pics). Great spot for a chill atmosphere with healthy options and great music. They have scheduled movies as well a rooms you can share with friends. Decor is cool 😎. Kinoki is special because this is where I learned about Prince's death during a live radio show recording. 💜

Great! best ambar store in town. You could say they are overpriced but they sell great quality.
Excellent museum, not the same as the official museum with basically the same name..Museo del Ambar, just a short walk away. The staff on our visit was very helpful and made our understanding of amber much better. The amber on sale was top quality with authentication.
50 pesos pp. Very informative in a beautiful renovated building. The videos are excellent I appreciated the English subtitles. Valuable information if you intend to purchase amber.
Ambar is so fascinating!! We had a great time learning about Ambar from Luis and the staff. It was both wonderous and educational. I would recommend everyone to stop by.
It’s a small museum but the pieces are truly gorgeous, the posters are vastly informative, and the staff are happy to clear up any doubts. Upon entering the exhibit, a magnifying glass will be offered to you. Don’t pass up the chances to use it! There are pieces with prehistoric organic material that are well worth a close inspection to truly appreciate the pieces’ beauty.
Nice attendant, small museum but has very nice pieces and they sell also , had a nice time
The museum is small but has many stories of the history of ambar. And the displays are wonderful
The pieces were beautiful and the employees were kind and helpful. One of them spoke wonderful English, and they all ensured we were taken care of and understood what was going on. We bought several amber pieces too!

Absolutely a must to visit Sergio’s wonderful museum. A fantastic collection of traditional clothing from the state Chiapas. Note: Sergio ‘s museum is only open one hour per day. Free.
The most impressive part of the trip, Don Sergio has dedicated the majority of his life to help the indigenous people in many capacities, as a dermatologist healing wounds (looks like diabetes is an issue among them bue to the excessive consumption of Coca-Cola), building wells and teaching the locals about health care. He acquired the items in the museum over the years.
Fantastic! Dr Castro has an amazing display of Chiapas village costumes, and an excellent slide show of local Festival days. More than that, his commitment to helping burn victims and other sick people in the villages surrounding San Cristobal is phenomenal. Go! Don't miss it!
Sergio was the nicest man in the world. He helped me in a pinch as an American traveler and didn't even charge me. He's the medicine man and so is his assistant. Thank you Sergio
one goes here to meet and talk with sergio castro, a true hero for so many. sergio has been the savior of so many burn victims in san cristobal and communities around this colonial city. he gives selfishly of his time, money and energy to help those who would be left to be scarred from their wounds a true saint for so many. the re is also an excellent collection of traditional clothing, but alas in a sad state of preservation.
Super interesting situation. Doctor Castro is an amazing generous person, very friendly and very welcoming and his collection of Trajes are incredible to see!
This was one museum I'll never forget. The knowledge and the cultural preservation is unparalleled. Do not miss this!
As of now the museum is closed for renovation

Come at Sunset and you get an amazing view of the city. With the sun ☀️ on the mountains ⛰. Just make sure you have time to climb all the steps
The experience was truly enjoyable and pleasantly surprising, as it turned out to be a workout that was not overly strenuous or difficult. It struck a perfect balance between being engaging and manageable, allowing for a satisfying session without feeling overly exhausted or overwhelmed. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the activities were well-paced, making it an overall delightful experience that I would definitely consider repeating in the future.
Beautiful Church and very beautiful panoramic sight on the city
A fun but tiring activity to climb the stairs, and the church itself is nice.
A very cute churchy at the top of the hill.. vie s are amazing from here. Lots of cafes and restaurants are around this place. I walked in the morning to this church and the views were beautiful.
A lot of steps and it’s suppose to give a whole view to the town however the trees cover most of it. Nonetheless nice walk and view.
It's a fun place to say you've seen. The steps are daunting but if you have limited mobility you can take a cab to the top and walk down. I've been told if you climb the steps with sincerity in your heart you can ask for a miracle. Inside is the Saint wrapped in ribbons for each miracle requested.
Beautiful church placed on a hill overlooking the city. You have a beautiful view from there, and the steps are an ideal place to rest a little. There are bathrooms next door for 5 pesos.

Came here twice on my trip. First time for a museum tour. The museum is small but has really cool history and info about cacao, the history that cacao has with Mayan culture and what it has become. Second time I came for chocolate workshop, which I highly recommend. You get to make your own chocolate disc to take home and understand why high quality chocolate is hard to find and the danger of cacao beans (facing extinction risk). Roxanna, my tour guide and also workshop manager, is amazing! She is the only one besides owner speaks English. We also get to taste a lot of different kind of chocolate there.
I had a wonderful experience at the Chocolate Museum! Our guide, Roxane, explained everything in English and did an excellent job. She was thorough, engaging, and very friendly. She went into depth, answered all of our questions with patience, and even added humor that made the tour fun and memorable. At the end, we were treated to delicious tastings of chocolate and pox, which were absolutely amazing. Highly recommended!
I liked the museum guide and since we where alone it was better. The staff is very friendly and the chocolate was delicious. I recommend to take the tour that includes a degustation att the end
Loved the tour, we took the english one. Everything was well explained by our enthusiastic guide! The chocolate tasting in the end was - of course - my favorite!
I enjoyed the tour and everything the tour guide explained about the cacao and how it was so sacred to the toltecas and mayans
Nice chocolate tour which takes about an hour. Afterwards you try different kinds of chocolate. Price is reasonable for 75pesos👍🏻 English tours at 1pm and 6pm
Not only a museum but also a place where try different kind of cacao, and chocolates...everything I try was yum yum yum from dark bitter chocolates sweet and "normal"
We did the Bean to Bar workshop and it was very fun and interesting to make our own chocolate bar :) we also got to taste different types of chocolates! I reccomend to take the workshop for a full experience.

(Translated by Google) The church is very beautiful from the outside. The arch that forms a kind of entrance is incredible. The only thing I didn't like is that this arch has been closed for some time now. I had the misfortune of finding it closed; I haven't been able to live up to the legend told about it. It is said that anyone who crosses under the Arco del Carmen is "symbolically captured" by the charm of the place, and will inevitably return to San Cristóbal, even if time passes or circumstances change. I hope to return to at least pass through the arch. That street is very quiet; hardly anyone passes by, and there is a small park across the street where you can rest for a while and enjoy a quiet moment in the shade.

(Translated by Google) It is located right next to the Arco del Carmen; In fact, today it is "annexed" because the arch became the temple's bell tower. In tune with the arch, the architecture of the temple is simple, simple, but that does not take away its attractiveness. Since the façade faces the east, in the morning, it is illuminated very well by sunlight and makes for very good photographs of it with natural light.

Beautiful decoration. I'm assuming this is a seasonal thing, so I would not expect to see it like this all the time.
Great view over San Cristóbal - for the most part. Unfortunately, trees block the way in all directions except to the front where the stairs are. Hence, it is not really worth it to go up here for the sunset. Yet, the church is a beautiful landmark which is well worth a visit - during the day. Also, for the fitness enthusiasts, the stairs are a great place to go for a work out in the mornings. You’ll love the view even more after having finished all stairs ten or fifteen times in a row… ;)
Very nice hike, if you choose to go thru the Sierra instead from the city side. The place is peaceful and beautiful. Provides a complete view of San Cristobal from up there.
One of the most special places in San Cris. It's generally quiet, a wonderful place for meditation, yoga, exercise, sitting with friends.
Beautiful walk up, not a lot of view from above.
The kids counted 280 steps. Good! We did our math for the day. Haha, joking. Trees cover most of the view but it was still beautiful, quiet and sweet. You could also just drive up but if you can do the steps then just do it.
Great exercise because it is quite a climb! The view is pretty great once there. Walk around the back of the church to see the communal gardens from above.
Nice climb up to the church. Church is nice and you get a bit of a view. So nice street art of murals on the walls aswell
