Such a great place to explore and get insight into the old mining practices in Coober Pedy. Tours are self guided and there is lots to see and the interpretation is very interesting. Kids had a ball finding all the different spots and reading the signs etc. No good if you have mobility issues - there are a few very low spots too that require bending over to walk through. Very interesting to see the old dug out house all set up too. Gift shop on site and very friendly staff. We also visited the Umoona mine and it's with doing both as they are quite different experiences.
Great value for money and such a good way to learn about the history of Opal mining in Coober Pedy, while walking through a real underground mine. Owner very informative. Really enjoyed our visit and then fossicking in the pit out the front for our own little pieces of Opal. Highly recommend this place for everyone!
Absolutely loved our visit to the Old Timber Mine in Coober Pedy! 💎⛏️ It's such a cool spot packed with history and charm. The self-guided tour through the old tunnels was awesome — I felt like stepping back in time ⏳🕳️. There are so many interesting displays, tools, and stories to check out 🛠️📜. The underground living quarters were fascinating 🛏️🏠 — can’t believe people lived like that! Everything was super well-maintained ✨, with helpful signs and info boards 🪧. The staff were lovely and welcoming too! 😄👍 If you're in Coober Pedy, don’t miss this underground treasure ⚒️💯 Highly recommend for families, adventurers, and history buffs alike! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🧭📚
Ample parking, nice noodling pit outside, kids were able to find some nice stones. Self guided tour, well laid out and numbered. Lots of things to see. We spent about an hour inside. Good souvenir selection from affordable to eye opening.
Such an amazing little experience. Only $15 to explore the original mines, how they were formed and used back when they were first opened. A tour Into the homes that are carved into rock and also souvenir shop with some stunning jewellery
A great way to see an underground mine and living quarters, with an interesting display of historical information. The friendly hosts made us very welcome, lots of opal jewellery for sale, as well as souvenirs. A very nice museum and exemple of troglodyte house can be also visited.
Great free camp and excellent mining experience museum. Loved our stop here. It’s within walking distance to the big winch restaurant, bar and tourist attraction.

💎 Fascinating Look into Opal Mining History This museum offers a well-curated glimpse into the rich opal mining heritage of the region. Modern, clean, and thoughtfully presented, it’s a great stop for anyone curious about Coober Pedy’s famous gemstone. Has tours, but need to book in advance. In addition to informative displays, there’s a selection of souvenirs and opal products available for purchase—perfect for taking a piece of the experience home with you.
Great place if you visit Coober Pedy. There's a free museum with a lot of interesting information and a paid tour which we would highly recommend. Our tour guide Zoe was great. She had plenty of information about living underground and opal mining even adding in some really interesting and funny personal stories. We also rented UV lights here to go noodling in the public pit. The next day we came back to hand back the torches and to let them have a look at our rocks (some had a bit of opal). His explanation about what we found and what we could do with it was great as we had no clue what we found exactly. All in all highly recommended this place if you're in Coober Pedy!
This is a Must-visit attraction in Coober Pedy. Everything you need to know about Opals is here in this beautiful museum cum opal jewellery store. The entrance to the venue is free. There are guided tours with informative movies which operate 2-3 times daily and need booking. There's a huge amount of rich history of opal mining, works of traditional arts, paintings, depictions of cultural heritages and so on... exhibited everywhere you look, from showcases to all the walls of this underground museum. There's a jewellery shop located within, which sells varieties of opal jewelleries, paintings & souvenirs, etc. Incidentally, there's also a coffee machine located inside the jewellery store area, where you can grab a quick coffee/tea while looking around. But there ain't any toilets/wash rooms inside this venue. So when you arrive here, make sure you are not in a Rush! Thankfully, there are a few emergency exits though 🤣
I dare say every person who comes to this quirky town will visit this museum, and so they should, it is a lovely experience. For the life of me I will never understand why they don’t charge for entry, no one would blink to do so nor complain after! There is a tour that you must go on. We had the delightful Zoe who described her childhood, school, work, home, partner and general life here. It was. privilege to hear the absolute inside knowledge into growing up and living in this town. An excellent way to spend 2-3 hours.
Excellent museum and a must visit when in Coober Pedy. There's lots to see and interpretation to read as free entry. There's also a great mine tour and rooms of a traditional, and modern dug out. Our guide was very informative and it was fun to hear about how 80% of the population live in dugouts. We also did the Old Timers Mine tour and these complemented each other and were quite different. Very enjoyable. Our 4 kids loved it!
Guided tour was fantastic, tour guide was very friendly and informative. Loved seeing the modern day and older dugouts. Museum also has some great information and displays
Great place to learn about the history of one of the nature’s greatest creations in the world. Very interesting place and very lovely kind staff. Special thanks to our lovely Museum tour guide (her name starts with “Z” 😉) She explained so many interesting things about Coober Pedy & Opals and we instantly fell in love with that dry red desert 🏜️. The people we met were very friendly and so kind.. Already decided to visit back and hoping to see those beautiful nice friends and places again.. Thanks again for such a wonderful hospitality & welcoming us warmly.. - from T’gon Vic- 😇
Well set up museum related to history of Opal production with plenty of free parking. Nothing free about their product range though with highly elevated prices for just about anything in their Opal and Jewelery shop. The Lady shop manager is a most unfriendly person, not well suited to her role Great for a look but I would look else where in town to secure your Gem purchases. Tour bus drivers have always enjoyed comissions here, how ever this occured under previous management but is quite possibly still the case. Go for the free of charge displays but look more towardsshops like "Opalios and Star Opal" for great Opal , fossil and Jewelery purchases.

Absolutely fascinating story of a woman's survival and how she positively thrived in what must have been a male dominated, tough mining town. Kudos to her! And the stylish and imaginative home she designed and built stands as a testament to her strength and free spirit. 💜
Faye's Underground Home was the first Coober Pedy venue that I visited and was a hit; highly recommended. Their entry fee is reasonable and commentary is very informative. A lot of history is revealed about one of the town's notable people.
Loved Faye’s!!!! The tour guide was fabulous, the underground home and adjoining mine told with the personal story of fabulous Faye in the raging 70’s along with accompanying photos provided a brilliant experience. We were a family of mum dad and a 7 year old and each one of us thought it was a top notch experience. We would highly recommend getting to see this while you are in Coober Pedy. Top 3 for sure- loved it!!!
Fully functional underground 1960s era home. Well presented. Clean. Different perspective of life in Coober Pedy.
Absolutely mindblowing what this woman achieved to build her home by hand with the help of her two amazing friends. Also everything else this lady achieved. What a machine. Thanks to Frida our tour guide who gave amazing account when you arrive of the life of Faye. Frida was so interesting to listen to and animated when she spoke. It was awesome to hear the stories. Then walking around Fayes Underground home which is brilliant and awe inspiring.
Very informative tour, definitely a good value for small money! The guide is very knowledgeable and passionate in explaining everything. The tour includes a visit to opal mine and also opal cutting demonstration! The ticket can be purchased from Opal Cave Shop with the Space Ship infront.
I just visited and it is truly the most amazing story about 3 women who achieved big , I have ever heard. I am so impressed and can not recommend this place enough. It is education and pure awareness about what you can be capable of when you have a strong will and mindset. Its just eye opening and impressive. Thank you to the lady with all her knowledge who told us the fascinating story ❤️❤️❤️
For us, this was the highlight of our 2 nights stay in Coober Pedy. Hearing of what and how Faye and her friends accomplished was the best apart from one thing that was even better. Frieda (the weekday host) is the real hidden gem of Coober Pedy. Her insights to not only Faye’s home but to the history of Coober Pedy were Captivating. We could’ve spent the whole day with Frida But the last time did not allow. Get her talking and she may even let a few town secrets slip…. She was an absolute cack!!! If you do nothing else in Coober Pedy Make sure you go visit Frida!!

Definitely worth a visit while in Coober Pedy. It is a couple kms outside town and open 24/7. Entry is a $5 donation into an honesty box. It is a small underground Serbian Orthodox church but the beauty and dedication to create a lasting monument to Serbian tradition and culture in such a remote place is awe-inspiring. This was one of my highlights during my travels. It's something not expected that I won't find anywhere else.
The Serbian Orthodox Church in Coober Pedy, officially known as the Church of Saint Elijah the Prophet, is an extraordinary underground sanctuary that beautifully merges faith, culture, and the ingenuity of its community. Carved entirely into sandstone between 3 and 17 meters below the surface, this church is a must-see for anyone visiting Coober Pedy. 🕍 Architecture & Atmosphere Built in 1993 by Serbian Australians who settled in Coober Pedy as opal miners, the church was constructed underground to escape the region’s intense heat. The interior is a marvel, featuring a 30-meter-long nave with a 7-meter-high ceiling, all sculpted directly from the rock. The sandstone walls are adorned with intricate bas-reliefs of saints, and a stained-glass ceiling window bathes the space in a warm, ethereal glow. The glass iconostasis adds a unique touch to the sacred space. Visitors often describe the church as serene and awe-inspiring. One reviewer noted, “The simplicity of the church emphasises the incredible amount of work done to create this beautiful space in a very short time.” 🙏 Experience & Accessibility The church complex includes a community hall, parish house, and religious school, all carved underground. While the church is active, services are currently limited due to the difficulty of securing a resident priest. However, the site remains open to visitors, with an entrance fee of $5 AUD. Parking is available on-site, and the church is easily accessible via a gently sloping corridor. 🌟 Final Thoughts Whether you’re drawn by spiritual curiosity, architectural interest, or the unique underground setting, the Serbian Orthodox Church in Coober Pedy offers a memorable and moving experience. Its combination of cultural heritage and natural beauty makes it a standout attraction in the Australian outback. 📍 Address: St Elijah Dr, Coober Pedy, South Australia 5723 🕒 Opening Hours: Daily, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM 💰 Entry Fee: $5 AUD 🚗 Parking: Available on-site 📷 Photography: Permitted inside
Beautiful underground church - $5.00 donation to enter, cards and candles inside are $2.00. If you go up to the mezzanine florist you get a great view of the church and you can see the baptismal bath up there as well. Lovely church - don't miss it!
The ambiance was serene. The stained glass windows were beautiful. As you enter the Church there was music playing which was very soothing. There is a $5 donation safe at the front, which I would like to think people would use.
Hidden Underground Treasure! ⛪️🕯️⛏️ Wow! Visiting the Serbian Orthodox Church in Coober Pedy was an unforgettable experience! 🏜️✨ Tucked beneath the desert surface, this underground church is a peaceful and awe-inspiring masterpiece. Carved right into the sandstone 🪨, it was built in the early 1990s by the hardworking Serbian community 🛠️🇷🇸. The craftsmanship is simply stunning – from the hand-carved walls and archways to the beautiful stained glass windows 🌈🪟 and religious icons 🖼️. The whole space feels cool, quiet, and sacred… a perfect escape from the blazing outback sun ☀️🔥. It’s not just a church – it’s a symbol of culture, community, and Coober Pedy’s one-of-a-kind underground life 🌍🏠. Whether you're into history, architecture, spirituality, or just love discovering hidden gems, this spot is a MUST-SEE! 📍💯 Perfect for a peaceful moment, amazing photos 📸, and a deep appreciation for how people have adapted to life in the harsh Aussie outback. 🐪🇦🇺
This beautiful Serbian church is definitely worth a visit if in Coober Pedy. It's loaded with beautiful works of art and the history of the architecture involved in building it, etc. It is only a short drive from the city. When we visited, it was pretty empty with only a few people around. There's plenty of free parking available outside the church. There's a donation box on the entrance, and $5 donation is required.
⛪ Unmissable Gem in Coober Pedy This stunning church is an absolute must-see while visiting Coober Pedy. The atmosphere inside is serene and calming—a perfect place for quiet reflection. Architecturally, it’s a true masterpiece that beautifully reflects the town’s character and history.
A stunning and incredible place to see! Definitely worth a visit. Gorgeous stain glass windows and example of a modern dugout. Come prepared with cash to make a donation at the door.

This is a must see when visiting Coober Pedy approx 20klms north, the best picnic stop, must take a phone or camera you will not be disappointed with your visit
It's absolutely stunning. Suggest you drive from Coober Pedy along the dog fence first and then onto the lookouts. The first allows you to grasp the size and sparcenest of the lands in front of you but, make sure you give yourself time to get to the 2nd lookout and watch the stunning changes in colour across the landscape but be sure to look up and if there are clouds this is where the magic happens. Simply stunning, and in my 40 years of remote travel, I have never seen anything similar. Highly recommended.
📸 Remote Beauty Worth the Drive This spot is perfect for capturing stunning scenic photos, offering a raw and untouched landscape that’s a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. However, be prepared—the access road is completely unsealed and can be tricky to navigate. A 4WD is not really needed, but recommend to reach the location safely, especially if you’re planning a trip after rain or during dry, dusty conditions. Rugged, but rewarding.
The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park covers almost 15,000 hectares featuring majestic arid scenery. The area is home to almost 60 native flora species including acacias, mallee and eremophilia. It is also home to a variety of wildlife, including red kangaroos, euro, echidna, numerous bird species and the fat-tailed dunnart (a mouse-like marsupial). The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park forms part of the traditional country of the Antakirinja Matuntjara Yankunytjatjara people. It is owned by Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation (AMYAC). We got up early and headed out to watch the sunrise. Breathtaking and we had the place to ourselves.
Self guided tour , 70 Klms round trip , Well worth it to see some amazing landscapes

Fantastic gallery with gorgeous aboriginal art. We got to see artist-in-residence Tommy Crow painting, and greatly enjoyed chatting with him. Nice selection of opal and locally made healing balms as well.
we paid 20$ for 2 after cuddling a joey for 1-2minutes. Which was absolutely amazing! However the owner randomly said that was it for today. Because of the heat the other animals didn’t come out. Just felt like a scam to be fair. Not sure if i would recommend.
A thrill to watch Tommy Crowe paint his amazing artworks. So quick with the brush and so skilled. Seemed like lovely guy too, who gave us a laugh. Your pamphlet Tommy was an interesting read of your life and work. Judy thank you for our time with TK the Joey and Blossom who enjoyed her snacks and your talk to allow us to understand better your work at the orphanage and how they came to be rescued by you all. I liked that it was a controlled setting and not for too long, with the best interests of the Joey & Kangaroo first and foremost. Well worth the visit for both the art and wildlife encounter.
Josephine’s Gallery and Kangaroo Orphanage is a located in the heart of Coober Pedy, offering visitors a unique blend of art, culture, and wildlife conservation. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, thanks to the passionate owner who dedicate the time to both the gallery and the orphanage. The gallery itself showcases a stunning collection of Aboriginal art, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the region. But what truly sets this place apart is the Kangaroo Orphanage, where visitors have the chance to interact with rescued kangaroos. The orphanage cares for baby kangaroos that have lost their mothers due to accidents or other unfortunate events. Its possible to feed them and learn about their rehabilitation process is heartwarming and educational. The dedication of the owner to the wellbeing of these animals is truly inspiring.
Donation base to cuddle a joey. My 5 year old son used his $2 he got from trading his opals at Tom’s opal mine for the opportunity. Was very disappointing the cuddle only lasted a min max. Very quick. Maybe it’s not to distraught the joey. Wish the lady was clear on this or else I would have told my son to save his money.
Wonderful place with aboriginal art and visiting artist. A fine selection of didgeridoo and boomerangs and best of all, the kangaroo orphanage and an opportunity to feed kangaroos and cuddled a joey. Josephine and Terry are doing such valuable work with the wildlife and this is a wonderful way to share with the public
Jo and Terry, who run this place, are the most wonderful people with the biggest hearts. Apart from running a gallery full of wonderful Aboriginal art and selling some opal jewellery (this is Coober Pedy, after all), they also run a kangaroo orphanage - but they'll take in any injured wildlife. They hold kangaroo talks 5.30 pm Mon-Sat, gallery opening hours depend on traffic and season. The lovely Judy also helps out with running of the gallery and caring for the joeys. There's $10 ($5 child) admittance charge but donations are very much appreciated as they don't get any government or other funding and all their money (just like any other wildlife carers in Australia) are spent on the kangaroos. Terry has an amazing knowledge of the Aboriginal art so if you want to learn a thing or three, ask him! Definitely a must if you're in Coober or just passing through!
Great selection of art and opal jewelry at a fair price. If you're an animal lover, definitely plan to do the kangaroo feeding. Bookings are required. The joeys are adorable and there's just something about feeding wasabi peas to kangaroos that you won't want to miss!

We had an amazing time at Tom’s Working Mine! Paul was a fantastic guide and storyteller, making the tour both engaging and memorable. Mila’s homemade scones at the end were absolutely delicious. A must-do for families with kids or couples looking for a unique experience. Highly recommend!
Cannot fault this place! If you love a good storyteller, Paul, the guide, is your man. He was so engaging and thoughtful with kids. Mindful of the duration of the tour but always trying to keep the kids busy, amused and engaged. Especially at the end when he was willing to trade some of the gems (or lack of) that they children had found. He’d teach them how to barter and was extremely generous with my two leaving them with a very sentimental treasure each. They (8&10yo) thought it was the best day of their holidays so far. They loved fossicking for the opals. Scones, cuppa and kids got poppers of flavoured milk or juice box with their scone. Twas’ a lovely, homely way to end the tour. The service from Paul’s wife and daughter was exceptional too.
Great outing, get lots of info, very informative. Experienced miner does the tour Hardhat and UV torch supplied for tour. Do the tour, much more informative then the self guided one. Even the dogs could do the mine tour. Kids got special treatment, they even founds some opals with their special torches. After tour lovely barista coffee and scones, even glutenfree available. Lovely caring owners who make everyone feel welcome Great display of raw and polished opal. Great variety for purchase Best place to visit in Cooper Pedy!!
Excellent visit, and as a self guide type of guy I thought is was good value. Plenty to see for sure. To top it off they give a UV torch to use to spy all that Opal still in the walls and ceiling. This place feels as though it goes way underground, you come across the original shafts along the way, and some Carey on going down further. The machines on show must of made the process quicker but I bet no more enjoyable! A very good visit, with a spot of noodling to be had on the way out!
Good experience and excellent story telling from the guide while visiting the mine. Drinks and scones provided after the tour. Decent opal souvenirs from affordable to the upper range (deciding whether to buy an opal or travel overseas). Whilst visiting the mine, there will be little opal bits for the kids to pick up. If you're visiting with kids keep them at the front, otherwise your kids will end up not being able to pick up any and well, you know what happens next. Noodling pit at the car park. Ample parking, toilet is at the entrance.
⛏️ Authentic Opal Mine Experience If you’re curious about the world of opals, this guided tour is a must. Set in a real, working opal mine, it offers a fascinating inside look at the entire mining process—from extraction to the finished gem. The guide shares detailed, easy-to-follow explanations, making it both educational and engaging. Keep in mind, the tour ventures underground into enclosed and dusty areas, so it’s best suited for those comfortable in tight spaces. After the tour, be sure to check out the onsite shop for a great range of opal products and souvenirs—a sparkling way to remember the experience.
This would be a most highly recommended place to visit, reasonably priced and wealth of knowledge, fantastic for kids also as they get to hunt for opal then sit down and do a deal to sell what they found, or keep. excellent tour.
What an awesome experience! Both the wife and myself enjoyed the guided tour immensely plus you can take your doggo on the tour aswell!!

We arrived on Sunday morning just as the pastor was opening it. He very kindly gave us a little tour and described some of the features. The church is simply furnished, but the atmosphere was pleasant. It is dug out completely through the side of a hill, and even in summer I'm told the temperature is mild.
The Catacomb Church in Coober Pedy is a remarkable testament to human ingenuity and spiritual devotion, uniquely situated within the opal-rich landscapes of South Australia. Carved into the sandstone during the 1970s, this underground Anglican church offers visitors a serene and contemplative environment, shielded from the harsh desert climate. Upon entering, one is greeted by the church’s minimalist yet profound design. The natural rock walls, subtly illuminated, create an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence. Visitors have noted the church’s simple decor as “truly beautiful,” drawing parallels to the ancient catacombs of Rome . A highlight for many is the warm hospitality extended by the church community. Personal tours led by the reverend or knowledgeable members provide deep insights into the church’s history and the broader context of Coober Pedy’s underground lifestyle . These interactions enrich the visitor experience, offering a personal touch that resonates with many. The Catacomb Church stands as a symbol of adaptation, reflecting how the residents of Coober Pedy have harmoniously integrated their spiritual practices with the demands of their environment. It’s more than just a place of worship; it’s a cultural landmark that encapsulates the resilience and creativity of its community. For those exploring the unique subterranean world of Coober Pedy, the Catacomb Church is an essential stop. Whether you’re drawn by faith, history, or architecture, this underground sanctuary offers a profound and memorable experience.
This is another iconic underground church to visit in Coober Pedy with a lot of history. After visiting Serbian Orthodox Church, we came here to have a look. It's an interesting place worth a visit if in Coober Pedy. It's about 2.5 km from the city and there is plenty of parking available.
A fantastic little underground church. Well worth the visit. Free entry!
We happened to be in Coober Pedy over Easter 2021 so it was fitting that we should go to a church - an underground church! We were the only ones there so that was a bunus, being able to read everything at leisure and take our time with the photos. Well worth a visit!
Catacomb Church of Coober Pedy Visited on 5/6/2019 On a sign board it says the church is "named after the Catacombs of Rome, where early Christians buried their dead and met undisturbed in times of persecution. Catacomb Church is an underground church dugout, with seating capacity around 100 people. It is cool all year round, without any air-conditioning system, except an electric pedestal fan. When it comes to oxygen supply, the church has simple ventilation shaft built into the rock to keep air flowing from the outside into the hall below.
Farther of the church was so welcoming and knowledgeable. It’s always a delight to talk with someone local. Thanks for all the information. Sorry we missed the Sunday sermon as we overslept.

Well worth the visit. Everywhere you look there is something weird and wacky to look at.
$10 entry fee, a weird, crazy, wonderful collection of items. It was really fun to walk around and had a beautiful dog waiting to say hi to everyone
This place has seen better days. It now seems it's become someone's money spinner. Absolutely no information as to who/what/where Crocodile Harry is/was. $10 per person to look around a dusty/unloved/unkempt underground bunch of graffiti filled rooms was definitely not worth the money or the time. Find somewhere else to visit and just Google the information on this place.
If you see only one place in Coober Pedy, make it Crocodile Harry's!! This place is AMAZING! He was such an incredibly eccentric but interesting bloke. His cave home is a history piece and there would be so many happy travellers with memories of visiting this place. Their messages are literally all over the walls. Check it out!
Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Super interesting that's like no other place you've been to before. Make sure to take cash for a donation for entry. Also take a permanent marker to sign your names on the walls. Out of all the places around Coober Pedy this was the most interesting we visited.
Beautiful, full of arts. No need to buy tickets, just an honesty box inside the premises and you can put the entrance amount to the box. No guide, guard or anybody. The google map would guide you to the place, keep cash/ change in hand to put into the honesty box. So beautifully kept. Totally worth the visit.
Definitely worth a visit. Had just exploring the somewhat untouched dugout. I read that Harry passed away in 2006, there are still clothes In drawers, utensils, photo albums of Harry and the girls he slept with. People leave things there but don’t take or trash the place. Their guy was clearly an obsessed predator so I’m sure what to think about it.
Amazing experience!!! Amazing things to explore The doggo is so damn friendly please don’t be scared !

A lovely spot to enjoy the sunset over Coober Pedy. The recently opened bar and restaurant is nice and the team working are all friendly and helpful. The menu is well priced and worth checking out. Plenty of on-site parking and a great view over the township. The shop inside has a beautiful collection of painted zébra stones to sell.
This is truly one of those hidden outback gems where the kitchen staff/head chef & owners all come together. The food/service/pricing is next level. Spoke to kitchen crew to personally thank their efforts- all so happy and friendly. Sunsets are next level.
Very average food, staff were ok not too overly friendly. The atmosphere was great and seeing the view is fantastic also, great sitting area outside. Good shop to buy some souvenirs. Toilets are very dirty.. also no prices for drinks so have to keep asking.
They smashed it out of the park. After visiting a couple of opal minds and at a loose end on what to do next, we popped into the Big Winch. Views of the town were fantastic, so I wasn’t expecting anything special. I ordered the laksa and Carola ordered the steak sandwich. The laksa was creamy and fragrant, the chicken succulent and the noodles perfectly cooked. I requested a sambal on the side which gave my dish that added kick. On asking would you like to share, there was none of it. I couldn’t fault the food, service and view. Coober Pedy is literally in the middle of nowhere but this place is well worth a visit if you’re passing through.
Easy to park, staff very pleasant, our egg and Bacon were delicious, you even received a little brownie with your coffee ( yum). The shop had lots of variety of clothes, soft toys and souvenirs. There was various seating, from booths, little tables for to or long ones for groups. There was outside seating, but as the wind was very strong, it wasn't that pleasant with all the dust. If you like my reviews please follow us around Australia 🇦🇺.
The cheesy garlic bread was absolutely amazing definitely worth the 16$. I’m pretty sure I traveled to a different planet when I had that cheesy piece of heaven. Just when I thought it couldn’t get better my burger with the lot came out. Biggest burger I think I’ve ever had yet I still probably ate it the fastest I’ve ever eaten a burger. The mix of different flavours is incredible very well made. Not sure who the chef is but that man needs a raise. My chips were also gold and crispy with the perfect amount of salt. Will definitely come back this place is so good. Definitely leaving a tip
This is the best you can get in Coober Pedy! The food is well made, and service is great. I had the nourish bowl, surprisingly fresh ingredients considering the desert location! Also had an amazing sweet potato fries, and a very tasteful chicken parm. Friendly staff. 10/10 in Coober Pedy.
Dinner with a view—and a side of existential joy Stopped by The Big Winch for dinner and left wondering if I’d just eaten my way into a higher plane of existence. We ordered the pesto pasta and the grilled chicken burger, which I’m convinced were cooked by someone who made a blood pact with the flavor gods. The pesto pasta was so good I briefly considered proposing to it. Fresh, herby, and just the right amount of garlic to make you question your relationships. The grilled chicken burger? Juicy, crispy, and stacked like it was trying to win a bodybuilding competition. I took one bite and forgot my PIN number. Washed it all down with an Asahi and a Guinness, because why choose between light and dark when you can have both and pretend you’re sophisticated? The staff were legends—friendly, fast, and didn’t judge me when I tried to lick the plate. Bonus points for the view: you can sip your beer while watching the sun set over a landscape that looks like Mars if Mars had better hospitality. 10/10 would eat here again. Might even move in.

If you have seen the movie you have to go there. The kids loved it too.
I was not familiar with the film this was a prop out of (Pitch Black) but my partner was very excited to see this spaceship parked up in a random yard you can drive right up to in Coober Pedy. It is looking a bit worse for wear but if you know the film this will excite you!
It was great to see this. Went and watched the movie again. It was bad. Lol
Space ship model build for shooting the movie pitch black is kept mear to Opal museum. Its good for taking pictures
Spaceship at Coober Pedy Visited on 5/6/2019 No, this spaceship has nothing to do with Australia's participation in space program, neither did it fall the sky. If you think you are at Woomera Rocket Park, you are wrong again. The space ship is the set used for the external shots of the crashed transporter in the movie Pitch Black, filmed in Coober Pedy. It was bought by a local businessman soon after filming was completed. Since then the spaceship is sitting outside the Opal Cave store, set in semi-Martian surrounding. It is a pity that a pop-up caravan from the neighbour is parked so close to Spaceship and spoils a good snap shot.
Definitely caught you have a piece of moive history in your Main Street
Great for a photo stop. Now there is a "Do Not Climb" sign that we couldn't step on it. Right in the middle of the town, right next to IGA supermarket and a Opal Store.
I loved the movie so it was cool to see this memorabilia just beside the main street. More could be done to preserve and promote it though.

When you realised how long this fence runs for and how it essentially marks out the border between SA and NSW you’ll realise it’s more than just a fence! A real testament to Dingoes and the influence they had on Australian agriculture
The Dog Fence near Coober Pedy is a remarkable piece of Australian history and engineering. Stretching over 5,600 kilometers, it’s one of the longest structures in the world, originally built to protect livestock from dingoes. While it may appear as a simple fence, its significance and the surrounding landscape make it a noteworthy stop. Experience and Scenery Visiting the Dog Fence offers more than just a view of the fence itself. The journey takes you through the Breakaways Conservation Park, showcasing stunning outback landscapes and unique geological formations. The contrast between the arid terrain and the fence’s linear structure provides a striking visual. Historical Context The fence has played a crucial role in Australia’s agricultural history, aiming to keep dingoes away from fertile lands to protect sheep and cattle. Its construction and maintenance reflect the challenges faced in managing Australia’s vast and diverse environments. Visitor Tips • Accessibility: The site is accessible via the road to the Breakaways. While the road conditions can vary, many visitors have found it manageable with standard vehicles. • Duration: A visit typically takes less than an hour, making it a convenient stop during your exploration of Coober Pedy. • Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon visits offer cooler temperatures and better lighting for photography. Final Thoughts While the Dog Fence may not be a traditional tourist attraction, its historical importance and the surrounding scenery make it a worthwhile visit for those interested in Australia’s outback heritage.
You have to understand that this is just a fence. The significance is in it's length and history. I saw it as I was in the area to see the amazing views. The point marked on the map has an information board as well which gives you some of the history.
A Must-See Quirky Gem in Coober Pedy! The Dog Fence is one of those offbeat attractions that adds a unique charm to the already fascinating outback town of Coober Pedy. Spanning over 5,600 kilometres, it's one of the longest structures in the world, originally built to keep dingoes out of the fertile southeast and protect livestock Standing beside it really gives you a sense of the scale and isolation of the Aussie outback. We stopped by during our road trip and found it surprisingly captivating. It's not a flashy attraction, but it carries a lot of history and character. The contrast of the rusted wire against the endless red dirt and blue sky is something you won’t forget. It’s also a great photo spot if you're into that raw, outback aesthetic. Coober Pedy itself is a wild mix of underground homes, opal mining, and surreal desert landscapes—and the Dog Fence fits right into that “only in Australia” vibe. I highly recommend stopping here if you're passing through!
Interesting location and story of why the dog fence was erected and still used today.
This is quite literally just a fence—nothing particularly remarkable about it. Getting there involves an unsealed road that definitely calls for a good 4WD. If it’s raining, it’s best to skip the trip—the dirt and gravel make the drive risky. That said, if you’re into off-roading and enjoy scenic routes, the journey itself might be the real highlight.
Iconic Australian man made structure stretching for thousands of kilometres.
To know its story is another fascinating fact about Australia.

Pretty little underground church in Coober Pedy. Open 24/7 just let yourself in. Beautiful stain glass, candles, cool, quiet and well worth a visit. Don’t forget to bring some cash and leave a donation.
A beautiful, peaceful underground Catholic chapel in the centre of town. It is open 24/7. Entry is a golden coin donation into an honesty box. A highlight of my travels that I won't find anywhere else. Definitely worth a visit while in Coober Pedy.
Cute little church worth a visit. Door is always unlocked which makes you feel welcome (like an old style church). Make sure to donate!
Everything about Coober Pedy is amazing. The underground living is unique, with a great history and magic place. It's one of a kind.
Opened 24 hrs. Lovely church. Very quiet and peaceful.
Nice church, beautiful, underground was a different but inthralling experience. Lovely people, really interactive priest. Really connected to life like experiences. Close knit community. Enjoyable service.
Another beautiful church definitely worth a look
A wonderful experience reminded me of the catacombs. Father Paul was so hospitable and made you feel at home, such a different warm and intimate feeling to Churches built anywhere else.

The service here was fantastic. We looked at a few places in town and this had such a wide variety. The older couple were very attentive, talkative and helpful. With 50+ years of experience; the gentleman mines the opal, cuts it and makes the jewellery by himself - so talented.
Beautiful place. Stunning Opals. Beautiful people. Family owned and Opal miners for 40+ years. Would highly recommend stopping in on this lovely attraction. Like most businesses in Coober Pedy, Cash is required
went here with my family today (sunday) and had the best experience. the beautiful lady showed us all the opals and told us an amazing story of her and her husbands life in cooper pedy. she even let us see some of the opals in the back and some kangaroo dot painting art. the husband and her are two of the nicest people we’ve ever met. if you are a tourist or just driving by make sure to pop in and show some love. 10/10 recommend.
Absolutely fantastic place to go, the lovely lady was so helpful it was a pleasure to hear her talk about her life and the 55 years that she has lived in Coober Pedy.
Beautiful people with so much knowledge of Coober Pedy and their opals. The lovely lady was so patient with us whilst we chose our opals, we didn’t feel any pressure to purchase anything. Highly recommend visiting the big miner and if you wanted to buy some opals, buy them from here!
Came across this shop by accident and so glad we did. The owner spent a lot of time helping my wife choose some cut opals as well as some rough opal for her to practise cutting. He gave us a tour of his workshop and was only too happy to show us many magnificent opals that he has in his shop. We were very appreciative of his patience and his prices are very fair.
Such amazing people and very nice, walked me through the shop and it was unreal the detail that is spent on there wares
Very nice opal shop and friendly owner.
