Quite authentic, historic and beautiful Meiji era buildings, an interesting insight into traditional Japanese manufacturing.
This medium sized museum gives the basics on how light soy sauce is produced. Most information is in Japanese (which is expected in a small town) but there is some English in main locations. This museum will not change you life, but it's admission fee of 10 yen might be the cheapest museum you visiting in your life
There's a really great little museum dedicated to Tatsuno soy sauce, and honestly, it's definitely well worth making the time to visit. The entrance fee is just 10 yen.
If you enjoy Kikkoman soy sauce, I recommend visiting Tatsuno to purchase their Usukuchi soy sauce. It is a locally made soy sauce, lighter in color & flavor, which I prefer. You purchase it here at the gift shop. It makes a great souvenir for lovers of sushi & sashimi to try.
(Translated by Google) It's famous for its 10 yen admission fee. Once inside, you can watch a documentary video from the beginning that shows the process of soy sauce production from its inception to its development as an industry. There were many nostalgic furnishings and tools on display for older visitors. I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't read any of the beautifully written documents.
(Translated by Google) The admission fee is only 10 yen! But the exhibits were very comprehensive. Apparently it was the first soy sauce museum in the country. I bought some soy sauce on my way out. They had different soy sauces for different dishes, so it might be a good idea to ask for an explanation if you're planning on buying some.
(Translated by Google) This is the Higashimaru Soy Sauce Museum. However, the fact that it is not called the "Higashimaru Soy Sauce Museum" but the "Usukuchi Tatsuno Soy Sauce Museum" shows the high level of corporate ethics of Higashimaru Soy Sauce Co., Ltd., which is concerned not only with its own company but also with the entire industry. The museum, housed in the former headquarters building, has many fascinating exhibits related to light soy sauce. Although it is light soy sauce, it has a subdued color and aroma, but apparently contains about 10% more salt than regular soy sauce. There is also a shop on site, selling a variety of products. I purchased their signature product, "Honjozo Higashimaru Soy Sauce." I tasted it when I got home and found it a little salty, perhaps due to the 10% extra salt. They also sold amazake, so I bought some. Why do they sell amazake? If you're curious, please visit the museum. 2025.11.13
(Translated by Google) This museum, dedicated to the 400-year history of Tatsuno soy sauce production, is a rare find in Japan. It opened in 1979. Located in the Tatsuno Townscape Preservation District, it was formerly Higashimaru's headquarters. Admission is only 10 yen! Parking is available around the building. The museum explains that soy sauce is a fermented food made from barley, soybeans, and salt, and requires a level of skill not unlike that required for sake. It's amazing to see the amount of effort required to produce the soy sauce we use every day. The museum displays valuable soy sauce-making equipment no longer in use, including koji rooms, preparation vats, and presses. In the room to the left of the entrance, there is a souvenir shop where you can purchase limited-edition soy sauce and mash that are only available online. The name Higashimaru apparently comes from the name of the brewery east of the castle, known as Higashinomaru. It also likely represents a wish for the company's prosperity, as if a round sun were rising from the east.

I didn't have any photos of the shop today, as I had a chat with the owner of an antique store that I had visited the last time I was exercising before lunch, and talked about some nostalgic things. It's a bookstore after all. This is a 120 year old building. The first floor of the building, which survived the war, displays and sells books, and the highlight is the second floor. It is an oval-shaped, nostalgic European building. It was originally what we would call a supermarket. The distance from the fork in the road at the large stone lantern to the remains of the castle tower was longer than we expected. It was quite a climb, but we arrived in just a few minutes. Unfortunately, there were no Asiatic black bears at the zoo, but you can see long-tailed macaques, peacocks, ducks, geese, goats, sheep, rabbits, and more. There are also restrooms and children's playground equipment near the zoo. We came here to see the autumn leaves, and although the leaves seemed to have arrived a little early, we still got to experience the atmosphere of the quiet castle town and it was a great day, and it's no wonder it's called Harima's Little Kyoto. My friend Mika-san walked me to this Tatsuno Castle. It is a Nice and quiet place. I wish I could come here during spring time when the cherry blossom (or sakura) and plum blossom trees are fully bloom, the scenery would be even more beautiful.
It is a small castle overlooking the town of Tatsuno. It was lovely.

(Translated by Google) I visited on 2025/03/16. This year, the flowers bloomed late, and there were still buds on the top of the mountain, so it took about 5 minutes to bloom in the garden as a whole. The event is held from February 11th to March 20th, but it doesn't seem like it will be in full bloom even on March 20th, so it will end on March 20th without an extension. When I asked the staff why it wasn't extended, they told me that once the cherry blossoms start blooming in late March, no one will come! That's what I was told. My personal impression is that this year was disappointing, but I think it's a recommended place if you want to see more plum blossoms next year. In addition to the main shrine, there are other shrine buildings modeled after Kyoto's Ryogamo Shrines (Kamigamo and Shimogamo), including Gonden, Kataoka Shrine, and Ota Shrine, eight of which are nationally designated important cultural properties. The metal fittings, which have the same divine crest of a two-leaf hollyhock as in Kyoto, look beautiful together with the cypress bark roof of the shrine, and the carvings are also exquisite. Murotsu was originally a port of call for Korean envoys following Tomoura and Ushimado, as well as Kitamaebune ships, and was very busy in the early modern period, so it is likely that such a magnificent shrine was built with donations from wealthy merchants of the time.
