Very beautiful and pristine villa. Everything is very manicured and clean. It is about a 2km walk from the Leno ferry terminal. Definitely some gradients so wear comfortable shoes. This villa is home to famous scenes in Star Wars and also James Bond Casino Royale.

Such an incredible place to visit if you are going to Lago di Como, I would suggest buying the tickets in advance so you can skip the wait, bring comfortable shoes, I wouldn’t recommend heels or anything like that if you do want to enjoy the most hidden places here. The experience was disturbing, as the two guards were refusing to let us in, especially the blond guard with glasses, who showed clear anger issues (he even turned away visitors who had come from Australia after reading on the official website that garden access was free without booking, yet he let in two young girls with tickets for the day after and didn’t let in others with the same tickets). I couldn’t believe there was no alternative way to enter, and I was right. After sitting on the cement floor for over 40 minutes, I saw an older Italian couple enter using FAI membership cards they had purchased one hour earlier. Despite my repeated questions, the guards never mentioned this option. One guard even insisted the membership could not be used if acquired on the same day, until I pointed out the date and time on the couple’s newly issued membership card. You can purchase FAI membership online, which grants access not only to Villa del Balbianello, but also to Villa Necchi and various villas and gardens from Milan to Varenna. If you arrive without tickets, especially since their official website states that you can enter the gardens without tickets or booking specific date and time, and they deny entry due to capacity, you can still access the property by obtaining FAI membership on the spot (€20 if you are under 30, €30 otherwise, valid for one year). Confirm with the staff that you will be admitted with the membership. If they refuse, you will know they are not being truthful, as they admitted others, including Italians, immediately after we shared this information with everyone behind us in the queue. The guard later claimed he “didn’t know,” yet I heard him tell the couple ahead of me, “You were smart to get it now,” unaware that I understood Italian. His increasingly hostile attitude toward me, simply for checking the website and pointing out inconsistencies, was unacceptable and clearly an abuse of his role. The villa and gardens were beautiful, but this experience overshadowed everything. For transportation, take a car or the boat from Como, it costs €12 and is highly recommended. And don’t let anyone ruin your day!

Famous from Hollywood-movies this gorgeous villa and surrounding gardens are a must visit when visiting Lake Como. We took the guides tour inside the Villa which was very fascinating. It was very hot and crowded in gardens however, so would recommend to visit off-season and make sure to buy your tickets in advance.

Nice museum with several exhibits. Also has gorgeous views of lake como. There is also a restaurant to grab some lunch. It was not crowded when we visited also there was no line to buy tickets. Worthwhile visiting the villa.

An absolute architectural, botanical and historical marvel of the last 500 years. The grounds of the villa are absolutely gorgeous - fountains sculptures, and perfectly manicured floral heaven. The garden is truly remarkable with how much variety of plants there are and also the way it's been maintained. For the building itself, nothing short of extraordinary - the design and architecture is impressive. There is so much history and craftsmanship behind this place.

Inside and out Villa Carlotta was a joy to visit. We loved the art work inside the villa. Be sure o look up as many of the rooms are adorned with frescos and or reliefs. The grounds are a botanical wonder with species brought in from around the world.

Very interesting. But what I would like is a MAP of the figures on the OUTSIDE of this structure. Clearly there are some very unique figures (not usually seen on churches), like Pliny the Younger. I would like to know more about the why each of these figures/animals were chosen and why they were placed in their current location. The construction of this Cathedral was begun in 1396 and over 300 years combined Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. What is interesting is that the cathedral in Milan was just begun 10 years before. There is a timeline of events related to the Cathedral di Sant Maria Assunta, is located inside, which is informative.

This is the only catholic church I have been in that has the old style offering candles. Finally, make sure to take in the ceiling. The use of blue is rare.

Beautiful place for a 45-60 minute walk, to have the full experience. Nice walking paths along the garden with various plants and trees. All this goes along the Como lake waterfront.

This is truely a lovely villa. The setting on the north end of Varenna is perfectly quiet. Property is between the road and Lake Como allowing for a magical stroll along the water. The property seemed a little worn. After a couple of days of train the paths suffered from large puddles making passage distracting on some portions. Other features were closed for repairs. The house was a treat and more intimate than some of the other villas we visited. Be sure to visit the exhibit room under the where you'll get your tickets and enter property. They have a fine audio and visual show that allows you to chose topics on the family and property history of the villa as well as the garden and it's flora. We visited in the second half of September but I can imagine Villa Monastero in blume is just amazing.

This is the most beautiful place I have ever been on Earth and I mean that. Wow just wow. The gardens are incredibly stunning and well kept and I probably took hundreds of photos here. Do not skip this place if you are in Varenna and spend some time here I promise it’s worth it!!! So much gorgeous scenery it felt like I was inside a pinterest board. If you are walking here from where the ferry drops you off make sure to walk along the path right next to the water with the red fence for some of the best views of the lake and then at the end head up one of the streets/stairs to get to the villa entrance.

We had a fabulous day at Villa Monastero, where every inch felt intentionally designed and beautifully maintained. The café on site offers refreshments, and there is one toilet for each gender. Both were beautifully prepared and spotless, which was a welcome detail. The combination of breathtaking views, peaceful atmosphere, and architectural beauty made Villa Monastero a truly memorable experience. Castello di Vezio is a scenic and well-preserved medieval fortress above Varenna, offering some of the most stunning panoramic views over Lake Como. The climb up is a bit steep, but worth it for the peaceful gardens, the mysterious ghost sculptures scattered around the grounds, and the historic tower with medieval artifacts inside. There’s also a small botanical garden and occasional falconry shows. A perfect mix of history, nature, and quiet charm—highly recommended for a relaxed visit away from the crowds.

Worth the visit. You can drive up close to the castle, with very few spots, still have to walk few minutes. They have senior tickets 4 euro, so that was great. The views are indeed excellent. The owl in the cage is unnerving, not sure why it's there.

Such a lovely spot with incredible views over Lake Como. The castle itself is full of charm and we even saw a beautiful owl on site, which made the visit extra special. The walk up the hill is a bit steep so you’ll definitely feel it but it’s absolutely worth it once you reach the top!

The walk up to this castle nearly took my life - however it was MORE THAN WORTH IT and I’d do it again! This castle rocked my world. Atmospheric music playing as we walked up to the top, only to be met with the best view in Italy. When we came down from the castle, we discovered an incredible dungeon - I won’t spoil it but the dungeon is a very spooky highlight that I thoroughly recommend. Overall this castle is worth the pain it takes to get up to it and I highly recommend you make the visit.

Orido di Bellano may be a short walk, but it’s absolutely worth visiting. You don’t have to just rush through it — it’s one of those places where you can simply stop, take a breath, and really look. We noticed that many people just walk through quickly, take a photo or two, and move on. But honestly, it’s worth slowing down — standing still and really absorbing the view makes all the difference. It felt like a bit of a hidden gem. We got there using local public transport, which also gave us a discount on the entrance fee. It wasn’t crowded at all, and the whole experience felt calm and memorable — actually one of our favorite, more peaceful memories from Lago di Como. Bellano itself was also super charming — much quieter than some of the more famous towns in the area, and honestly, I enjoyed it more for exactly that reason.

A beautiful villa right in front of the lake. Didn't go to the villa but just sightseeing the park and the lake. The park is wide and beautiful, suitable to picnic or just to stroll around. It's suitable to got there on one-day trip from Milan, to experience different ambience. There is public toilet too, it's moderately clean but smelly.

We dealt directly with the owner, he took time to ensure we were prepared and had everything that we would need to enjoy our time on this beautiful lake. The boat was clean, very well maintained, safe, and exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend renting a boat with Turati, the price was great and we enjoyed our time on the lake with no concerns.

We had the pleasure of renting a boat on two different days during our stay in Argegno. Highly recommend this business! The boats were immaculate, owners were both very helpful and friendly. Ask them to make a restaurant booking for you whilst out boating as well. We ended up at a family restaurant for lunch and it was a really authentic Italian experience.

We also learned that it’s allowed to swim from the boat, so next time we’ll definitely take a dip! We had a chance to unwind, chat with the staff a bit more, meet the owner’s adorable dog, and take a few more photos. All in all, this was one of the most memorable and special experiences we’ve ever had. Highly recommended — we’ll definitely be back!

A very nice, peaceful holy place. Nevertheless I'm not sure in the opening hours, because we arrived there before 3 PM, and the facility was open. The road leading there is very narrow, and surface is uneven, made up in smaller/bigger pebbles. 10 km/h speed is the maximum, if you don't want to let your car being damaged.

A beautiful and peaceful place, the Abbey is still in use. Its worth a visit for the church and the grounds, but the views of the lake and mountains are quite stunning. When we visited there was an exhibition of Fra. Piets paintings, striking and original, surprisingly fresh and modern, and the Abbey produces a liquor which can be bought in a small shop.

I can't help it but wonder whether Jesus would have put up these (very recent) signs aimed at not so rich travellers who used to flock in large numbers to the site. Now the parking is empty. This beautiful, gleaming monument to Como native Alessandro Volta, the renowned physicist who invented the first electric battery, stands in the lake a short distance from the shoreline. Life Electric was a gift to Como from Polish-American artist Daniel Libeskind, who owns an architecture school in the town. The twelve ton steel sculpture depicts the electrical tension between the poles of a battery and is connected to the town via a three hundred and fifty meter pier paved with flagstones. Wonderful views of the lake are to be had from the pier and the base of the sculpture. Free entrance and not crowded at all at mid-morning on a Sunday end of June.

Cool artwork on the lake. Walk slowly and enjoy the atmosphere. However, the road does not connect to the other side of the lake; it is a round trip walk.
