Took the Gondola up like the hike whistler website said, and it turned out to be a pricey $66, which was not what i had read online. On our way boarding the gondola, one of the ladies mentioned that the High note trail was closed, which was not posted on any of the websites or anywhere that was accessible to us. Later we figured out this was part of the main trail we going to be taking. Once at the top there were no signs as to where to go, so we looked at a very vague map and had to guess where to start, we could tell they were hiking trails, however not specific enough or well marked. The trail we were on was not even a trail, we just had to bushwhack our way through and look at the vague map and guess if we were going in the right direction, lost the trail at least 4 or 5 times and spent up to 30 mins sometimes trying to find a trail in an area where we had lost it. Once we were around mile 6 we reached the sign that said which direction the musical bumps trail was and the trail was pretty clear after that. Also, snow patches every once and a while soaked our feet, but micro spikes were not completely necessary. Hike whistler website says around 1800 feet elevation gain and we quickly learned this meant NET elevation gain...we went up and down several mountain/large hills just to end up 1800 feet higher than we started, which ended up being a lot of total elevation gain (est. somewhere around 3500). However, the hike was completely beautiful along the way. Took us 4 hours from gondola to Russet lake including stops because we were lost, and we are pretty fast hikers. All in all once we got there it was beautiful, the lake was frozen over. The campsites are clear. There is an outhouse. No bugs really. Only animals we saw were marmots. Pretty cold at night (est. around 35 degrees). Spectacular view in the morning when the sky got clear, i recommend waking up early to see. Saw a group at the top and talked to them about their route up. They took the trail from the bottom (which we ended up taking back and was very clear, however I'm not sure i would've been able to find the trailhead) and it was very clear all the way down. All in all, i would recommend the first route if there was a clearer path because the hike was gorgeous and spaced elevation gain out nicely. Definitely recommend!
