Fantastic, magical day the Natural History Museum. Some of the absolute best dinosaur displays Ive seen. Breathtaking exhibit. Also an incredible Bird Hall. The Hall of American and African Animals is also fantastic. We were very excited to see the Egyptian Exhibit, but it was sadly closed. The section with gems and minerals to enormous and had we had more than a day to do the museum we would have spent more time exploring that as well. There is a cafe in the basement that had a nice selection of hot and cold items. The store was really comprehensive. Parking was very expensive which seemed excessive given its on top of the cost of getting into the museum. But overall it was worth it. If you take the elevator mind the note inside the elevator that tells you what floor to use for the Museum. Of note, one ticket gets you into BOTH the Museum of Natural History and the Art Museum and both are under the same roof. You can explore each one and the stores are very close to each other.

If you have a chance to go to the Haunted Museum event they hold around Halloween, I highly recommend going!!! It was so fun. They had trivia and photo ops and you could add on food and drinks. It was so fun, and costumes are allowed as long as you follow guidelines. Event is 21+

From the moment I stepped through the doors, I knew this was going to be a special visit. First time here in my many Pitt visits. The special exhibit was a lot of curious and interesting items pulled from the archives. One floor was dedicated to Pittsburgh sports. It was great seeing all the memorabilia, especially the Penguins items with Fleury's retirement game being held that weekend. They had a very nice section on glass produced in PA, the timeline of Heinz itself, and Mr Roger's Neighborhood and other interesting antiques. I spent a few hours wandering the 5 floors.

What an informative history center! I love that it is a Smithsonian affiliate and incorporated local history and US History. We didn't visit the 3rd floor kid's zone, but the fact that kids are free and there are exhibits dedicated to just them is so fun! I love Mister Rogers and was so overwhelmed by the collection on display.

I visited The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and as expected from his birthplace, the building was impressively large and well-designed. We went for the Musem of Art mainly but enjoyed the Natural History section too. Friendly staff and guides help you to learn more about the art. The natural history section had great exhibits on birds and bugs. And a jewelry exhibit was fun to run through. Easy parking make it easy to spend time here.

You can see a lot of European paintings from the 15th to the 19th centuries, but I thought the best part of it was the pre-impressionism impressionism and then what followed after. The staff were kind and helpful. There were a few really neat exhibits like the Raggedy Anne and "Blood in the Water" stairwell.
I feel as though it would be a better museum to visit during warmer months when outdoor exhibits are in bloom and going between buildings isn't a chore in freezing weather (It isn't one big building; it's a few buildings scattered around the block). Be aware that one building upper floor is in very low light (red light) and can be tricky to navigate for some.

For a unique art experience, go to the Mattress Factory inside an old mattress warehouse. Admission can be steep so try going on a day where there's discounted admission. It took my family an hour to go through both buildings. The art is very unique and some of it is hands on. Our eight-year-old daughter enjoyed the third floor of the main building where there's VR and the Kasama room. Restrooms are on the bottom floor. Don't sleep on the gift shop for some treasures. Not a bad way to spend a few hours, but I wasn’t wowed by the place as a whole. Some of the installations were thought provoking and engaging (I particularly like the works exploring and engaging with the history and impact of Pittsburghs industrial history), but I found other works to be vapid at times. Definitely take the stairs from the 4th to 3rd floor, there’s an incredible view.
Also, and this is just by nature of some of the converted buildings, the campus isn’t incredibly accessible. They have measures where possible but some of the spaces just aren’t conducive to lifts or elevators. There were also a large number of low light installations that were kind of treacherous- I tripped and fell over a bean bag in one room because the room and bean bags were all black and just kind of strewn about.

The best science center ever, even for adults! Perfect Mars exhibit, water and wind experiments. They have a section dedicated to education about the human body and the interactive displays are so much fun! The highlight is definitely the huge train model, we spent a lot of time in there! We visited on a Tuesday and had a lot of fun! The museum's exhibits are aimed at a younger audience than the Natural History Museum but are still enjoyable by adults. The Mars exhibit was absolutely fascinating - it's great that the mock society takes visitor opinions into account as it continues to be built.
The high point of our visit was the planetarium! The narrator for Space Volcanoes was top notch and deserves a raise - he really put a lot of effort into making it fun and high energy. Awesome place for small kids or big kids. So many awesome exhibits and interactive activities. Our favorite is the third floor. It is a water play area. They have aprons for kids if they do not want to get wet. But most kids came with swim suits. They have an ice table that is super fun. I saw that on March 20th they were doing a special to commemorate Mr Rogers birthday and admission was free that day. I think that's a really cool way to keep his legacy alive. I don't have kids, but I love art so and really enjoyed my time here. I only stayed about an hour and half mainly because I was tired. All the kids looked like they were having so much fun. There were so many activities for them. I personally enjoyed the Charlie Harper exhibit I am wild. I visited the museum with my 4 kids (2 months, 3, 6, and 8) today and we had a great time. They enjoyed every floor, but the water and the “garage” rooms were definitely the favorites. I loved the extra steps taken to make this place exceptional for kids and parents. As a nursing mom of an infant, the quiet corners are amazing. I was able to sit and nurse my son while my older kids played. There are SO many bathrooms which is super convenient for toddlers. The cafe has awesome, fun, kid friendly foods and has a sink just for handwashing. You don’t have to touch the soap or sink at all. It’s so clean and well thought out. Each room is thoughtfully designed and allows kids to play, but in a “STEAM”-centered way. The gift shop is also amazing. It’s small, but packed with thoughtful items. I visited the National Aviary in Pittsburgh—the only zoo in the world entirely dedicated to birds. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience.
Upon entering, I first headed to the “Wetlands” area. In a vast, open space, I was immediately greeted by a group of flamingos. Birds of all kinds flew freely overhead, and to my amazement, a large bird casually walked right past me.
I also had the pleasure of hearing the lovely song of a canary—it was peaceful and uplifting.
What impressed me most was how incredibly clean the facility was. Despite the large number of free-flying birds, there was not a single droppings on the handrails or floors, and no noticeable bird odor at all. The cleanliness and care clearly reflect the dedication of the staff.
This is a fantastic place to witness the diversity of bird species up close. I highly recommend it, especially for bird lovers!

I cant say enough about this place. Every room is spectacular. There are such a wide variety of birds and some are very friendly. Each of the large rooms has a show twice a day. We saw each one and they were immersive and enjoyable, you got learn individual birds names and personalities, and the staff was very knowledgeable. On our last day in Pittsburgh before catching our flight home, we had a little extra time to kill before heading to the airport. We decided to come to the national aviary and check it out.
After parking on a nearby street, we made our way inside and easily purchased tickets at the front desk. I arrived on a weekday when it opened and spent a leisurely time walking around observing ,listening and soaking in the educational information. We came here on a Sunday in January for the Winterfest event while in Pittsburgh for the weekend. I found out about the event through Facebook. It was a free event but there was a $5 charge to tour the first floor of the mansion. There are several buildings in the property including the building with artwork, a carriage house, a cafe and visitors center, greenhouse and mansion. It was an informative tour through the artwork and carriage house. There were several knowledgeable docents in the mansion and they all were friendly and informative. Parking was on-site and the lot was pretty full. It looked like you could park on the street as well. We booked The Frick more than a year out, part of the way in The Frick hired new coordinators, Beth and Anna, who turned out to be fabulous.
We were a bit nervous getting a new coordinator after booking the venue but Anna ended up being absolutely amazing, she was one of the MVPs of our wedding week and went above and beyond when we had issues with other vendors.
The grounds themselves were absolutely gorgeous and the staff cares for them so well. Every staff member we interacted with at the Frick was friendly, professional and helpful. They did everything in their power and then some to make sure our wedding went well.
Highly recommend this as a wedding venue, it is spacious, beautiful, well equipped and has the in-house staff to pull off whatever you need.

Obviously, weddings are a big deal – so I think it is important all future couples have a true insight to other experiences before making a decision.
A little background, when I got engaged to my now husband, I had only been to Pittsburgh once in my life. At the time, we lived states away and I essentially knew nothing about the city in general, let alone the wedding scene. Back in 2023, I made the (big) mistake of contracting a different venue for our reception. Fast forward 20 months, and I received word less than 2 months before our big day that our venue would be undergoing construction. Immediately, I reached out to Soldiers and Sailors, and by the grace of God, they had one date available left, and it was our date… Amber (THE BEST wedding coordinator who can be dubbed a miracle worker) responded to my note moments after I reached out, and we ended up on a Zoom the next day. Not only was Amber extremely empathetic to our situation, but she also showed up to our call with a plan for how she would be able to execute the wedding of our dreams on such short notice.
What had originally been an extremely overwhelming, gut-wrenching experience, quickly turned into something I was excited about. Amber seamlessly restored my trust in the wedding planning process and essentially took the reigns as she navigated the transition of all my vendors to Soldiers and Sailors. My husband and I were blown away by how she traversed this tricky situation with such grace and professionalism.
I could go on and on about how incredible Amber and the team at Soldiers and Sailors were – but I will leave you with this. Yes – Amber/S&S have a special place in my heart for what they did in our time of chaos.. but Soldiers and Sailors is truly a BEAUTIFUL venue that provides great flexibility and can make any vision come to life.
Our guests absolutely raved about our cocktail hour in the lobby. It was beautiful, timeless, grand, and our guests really enjoyed having the opportunity to take in the exhibits while they waited for our wedding party to arrive. We had a 3-piece band playing, and a bar on each end. The space was fluid, the bartenders were efficient, the acoustics were perfect, and the transition upstairs to the ballroom was seamless.
The board room – which we used as our staging room/an area for my Husband and I to have a moment during cocktail hour, was incredible. It was spacious enough for our large wedding party (23 people!), and just a unique space. The pictures we have from there are awesome...
Now, the best for last. The Ballroom is truly unbelievable!! We brought in string lights, a band, flipped the bars so they were facing inside the space, and positioned the tables to make such a large space feel warm and comfortable for a smaller wedding (128 people). The pictures of the space don’t do nearly enough justice, as it truly transforms when you bring in the tables, bars, lighting, etc.. Our guests had the best time, and we would not have changed a thing.
Honestly – we are so thankful that we ended up at Soldiers and Sailors and would strongly encourage everyone to work with them.

Close to the Carnegie Museum of Art is this gem of a museum. This is an old school museum with a ton of artifacts and history that doesn't need shiny screens and QR codes to shine. For kids, there is a special room which is nautical based and more interactive!
The building is stunning and the details on the ceiling, walls and windows are beautiful. Don't miss the fantastic auditorium which is huge (the acoustics are really impressive too!). For Silence of the Lambs fans, the room used in the iconic scene I think is the ballroom!

They do have events so keep an eye on what's going on in case parts are closed off. The cases themselves are fascinating and I think the idea is that everything is linked to the soldiers and their belongings in the context of the larger war. There are some fascinating stories ranging from misspelling on a gravestone to dogs in war to a river-drenched flag.
Staff float around and all the people I spoke to had a lot of passion for the museum and a lot of knowledge so any questions that occur to you, ask! Restrooms are on the lower floors and don't miss the little gift shop by the entrance either!

Great size zoo with lots of animals to see, as well as kid-friendly things like play areas. It is quite hilly (it is Pittsburgh after all!) but scenic and a good way to spend a family day. The food is ok, actually has more options than many zoos I've been to. We ate at the Jambo Grill. It was like walking through nature while stopping to view a variety of animals. Kyle really enjoyed everything as well. The layout is really well thought out. What an extraordinary place! I am very glad I made it part of my trip to Pittsburgh over the week of the 4th of July. The amount of bicycles here is mind boggling! Even more so is how many rare ones are there! While I am super bummed that the legendary pinball machine is no longer available to try, I would still go back for sure!

This is probably one of the top three best attractions at the Carnegie Science Center. However, the tour guide was anything but...she told us to simply walk through. It would have been much better to take a pause, learn about each room on the submarine. Her attitude was abysmal, disengaged, downright flippant. It just didn't add up with how awesome it is to see an American Submarine and in person nonetheless. If the museum understood how unusual what they have in their collection is, perhaps they would invest in a more enthusiastic and educational experience for their patrons. Also, the submarine is in water, that's going to corrode in no time...hopefully the Center does some preservation actions soon if they want to keep this valuable piece of history available to the public.
That said, definitely recommend to all planning to attend the museum to see this exhibit. Note, small children will need to be carried, the ship is not handicap/stroller accessible.

I decided to walk over the Warhol Bridge to check out the Photo Antiquities Museum, intrigued after seeing it listed as “open” on Google Maps. 4 stars only because it was a little difficult/unclear on how to get in touch with them, but it is operated by the same guy as Bernie’s Photo next door so I was able to schedule a tour by calling that store instead! Reservations required, it seems that tours are mostly on Saturdays (and last an hour), and it is a $10 cash only donation.
He has an incredibly expansive and well curated collection that covers so many topics of early photo history, and is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the topics the museum encompasses. If you’re a fan of history or photography this is definitely a must see place.

Bruce generously scheduled a private time to accommodate my wife's travel schedule. We had no idea what to expect --- and both left feeling this museum is a real gem in Pittsburgh. The amount of history and the actual collection of cameras, prints (some hand colored), glass negatives, and realizing how photography was truly a luxury was incredible. There is also a wonderful section on Pittsburgh including the city's 150th celebration in the early 1900's.
Everything is also very well organized and it not just a bunch of equipment laying around.
Bruce spent close to 90 minutes with us and we felt bad only paying $10 each -- so we gave $30 for both of us but it feels worth way more than that!

All it takes is going there on weekends, stop by at the tour desk, pay $10/person and get a chip card that enters the rooms in exchange for your ID (obviously, don't forget to come back there when you're done). We toured Clayton where Henry Clay Frick lived during a time in Pittsburgh. It is a docent-led tour. We were lucky there were only three people. The docent was excellent and gave a balanced view of Frick. Go to the Greenhouse where they have a beautiful exhibit. Also. It looks and feels like an eighth grade presentation, with very few artifacts (if any) that actually belonged to Stephen Foster. A very pleasant visit! An unmissable cultural spot in the city! The Museum is very new, clean and organized. The fixed exposures are very easy to assimilate and very well structured. Really a nice overview. The temporary exhibition of Mexican masks was a spectacular delight.
