Upon entry to hotel the reception was friendly as were all the staff. The waiter especially was attentive and recommended either wines or accompliments.The menu was not large but enough to choose from. I prefer small menus anyway. The food was lovely, both had fish and cooked perfectly. I had the fish of the day which was a whole Dorade cooked with lemon, olives and fennel. Such a beautiful delicate flavour with a nice meaty fish. My partner had the biggest cod loin I've ever seen, cooked with pomegranate seeds & curried cauliflower puree - again delicious. The dining room was lovely and ambience just right. We only went here as we used The Fork 50% voucher, would we pay full price - yes without hesitation. They also had a Taste du vin menu, 6 courses with wine pairing for £69. If the quality of food is the same as our meal we had - a bargain. We were too early for check in so we sat and had a pint in the lovely bar area, with all kinds of articles, poetry and memorabilia decorating the walls. I really like that the seats were old school desks from the 70s with people names carved into them, it gave the place a special feel. Even though we were several hours early, the nice lady behind the bar suggested that we might be able to check in as some rooms were ready. This made things much easier, because it meant that we could unload the car and not worry checking in later, so gave us more freedom to explore at our own leisure. Very rarely do you get the offer to check in early, so that was a massive bonus point. The rooms are all individually themed, and done to an extremely high standard. We stayed in “The Street” room, which was named because of the view. In the wall there was a detailed history of the room and the street that you look over, I won’t spoil it but it was very interesting and a nice touch. The location couldn’t be better, you’re in town in less than five minutes, with a walk past the cathedral. Parking is also extremely easy behind the pub. We slept extremely well, bed was very comfortable. All the staff were excellent and very happy to accomodate us when we asked to check in slightly early to make things easier for us. The room was excellent and very comfortable to stay in with great amenities. A small complaint here, the TV in the bedroom of our stay did not support any streaming from apps or devices and did not seem to receive great signal. We'd hoped to unwind after a long day by streaming something but we had to settle for using a personal device instead. But this was only a small inconvenience and didn't disrupt our stay at all. The free guest wifi was also very welcome. Breakfast was very good with excellent options on the menu. The portion size of the full english did seem smaller than expected but nevertheless tasted very good. The best aspect of staying here was the location, a very short walk past the Cathedral into the city centre, we had plans there all day so this made it very easy to access where we wanted to be. So we opted to hang them on the back of chairs. I then thought instead I would have a glass of water but no thank you, the coasters they where resting on upside down had some brown stain on. We then used the shower that could not decide if it wanted to be hot or cold and we couldn't figure out which one was the cold tap because the label had fallen off. The shower then while being used filled about 10cm and took 5 minutes to drain. It was very close to over flowing. And then to top it all off the AC doesn't work the sauna of a room and the TV called me Mr (i am a Ms).

Very clean and super comfortable beds, plus lovely touches around the room. Now for the negatives... After booking, I didn't receive the details to get inside the room. I contacted the phone number and they were quick to send it, so that was fine. The shower's hot water was very temperamental. I had to let it run for over 10 minutes to get any at all, and it was cold within 5 minutes. The heating didn't seem to be working until the middle of the night. I turned the radiator to the max for a couple of hours and there was nothing, then woke up at 1am to a very hot room (maybe it only works during certain hours?). It was December so the mix of the two made for a freezing evening and stifling night - all with no shower available. I lowered it before leaving but it was odd that both heating and hot water weren't working in tandem. I was heartbroken to wake up in the morning to find only decaffeinated coffee. Had I known I would have brought some of my own. The room next door must have been chain smoking - some smoke came through my room but the hallway between the room is particularly bad. I would have gotten in touch about the hot water but it had gotten late and I'd finished a 17 hour work day and with a 5:30am wake up time in the morning I really just wanted to go to bed. Because it's self check in with no staff around, it may not be the best for people in Winchester for work who just want a hot shower and a good night's rest. I shared all of this feedback in a nice note to the host several times (both through Booking and by text) but heard nothing back, which is disappointing. I felt given the lack of really essential things, that I should have received some money back. Will not stay again.
