Hurst Castle is a great place to visit.
My husband and I took the kids and we all had such a lovely day.
We parked up at keyhaven and took the ferry which was great fun.
The castle has so much to see and stunning views of the needles/Isle of Wight and the fabulous lighthouse.
Staff were friendly and sociable.
We stopped for lunch in the castle and sat at one of the benches provided.
After we saw everything at the castle, we took a walk to the lighthouse and put our feet in the lovely clear water which the kids loved.
We have all said that it is one of the best places we've visited so far and already want to plan a future trip back here.
We are members of the English heritage and we got in for free, we only paid for the ferry crossing which was pretty good price wise.
All in all a great cheap family day out with lots to see and admire.

Really enjoyed it here, a mix of the old and the more modern, great history. We caught the little ferry boat over which was lovely, we were going to go back the same way but decided to walk back along the spit, was about 2 miles out in the open and shingle all the way, was very windy on the way back but a nice walk none the less. I enjoyed my visit immensely. A great place to bring children to run around, although I suggest you use the ferry with the little ones as its a 2 mile walk from the carpark. Completely dog friendly I brought mine. He enjoyed sniffing around the rooms but was impatient to move on. So I photographed the information panels for later. There's a very small cafe and the toilets are open to the elements.

Hurst Castle is an absolute gem. The walk from the car park to the castle is about 2 miles with lovely views of the Needles. You can get the ferry from Keyhaven to save on the walk. Once inside the castle, there’s so much to explore and the exhibitions are well presented and bring the stories of the castle to life.
The views from the castle walls are breathtaking and you can see across to the Isle of Wight and watch the boats sail by.
I’d highly recommend bringing a picnic and spending a few hours wandering, learning, and soaking up the atmosphere. A brilliant day out for families, history lovers, and anyone who enjoys a walk.

We took the ferry from Keyhaven, the two mile walk along the single bank wasn't an option today. The castle was very interesting, the way it had evolved to meet new threats over the past five hundred years. Difficult for those with mobility issues as there are spiral stairs, uneven steps and low doorways. Fascinating exhibition about lighthouses. Be prepared for the fresh breeze off the sea. Facilities are limited, toilets little changed in one hundred years, a small cafe with outside picnic benches. We parked in Keyhaven and the advice there was four to five hours for the visit and that proved about right. During our visit the ferry was operating all day even during low tide but that is not always the case.

Worth a visit and any number of re-visits - Visited on Saturday, 28/06/25. 3rd visit here and the first for about 11 years. Lovely weather, which always helps, and there was a Morgan owners meeting taking place, so there was more to see than normal. Parking is near the entrance, but uncovered. Bought the tickets online in advance, so you get a discount, and it's straightforward to get in. Once inside, the initial options are a Monorail and restaurant/toilet facilities. Very pricey for anything in the restaurant (£5 for 2 cans of soda), so suggest you bring your own. The monorail is an excellent way to get an overview of the site before exploring on foot, and the ride is included in the entry price and can be ridden more than once. The old Top Gear exhibition has been replaced in part by a new section of example cars from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's that you can get in and reminisce about (though these cars are in a bit of a state tbh). Beyond that, we visited the main museum, which hadn't changed much in the past 10 years, but had exhibits moved around. The F1 section was very good with more recent examples of cars, and whilst we visited, an excellent F1 Simulator which you can go in (you have to pre-book) for £15 for 15 mins. It's worth it, so suggest you book a slot as soon as you arrive. On this visit, we didn't have the time to explore the house and grounds, but there are some lovely walks to be had. The staff are all excellent and approachable, and friendly, and though I have been 3 times now, I would have no qualms about making future visits as there is generally a change each year.

A great museum full of exhibits from all eras. So much to see and do. The monorail is amazing,offering great views of the gardens and museum.
The abbey ruins is a beautiful place too and the information available about the monks and their life is great to read.
We were fortunate to visit during Halloween season so we're treated to ghost stories presented by a member of the Montague family,he was a great story teller and really captured the spooky atmosphere. It was the highlight of our visit,both children and adults sat,eyes wide open,listening to his spooky tales.
A must visit museum if you're in the New Forest,loads to see and will easily fill a day.

I took my 6 year old daughter for her first visit (but far from mine) and she absolutely loved it! The weather held good despite the late October timing.
She loved seeing Mr Bean's car and the Disney display but her highlight (and mine, to be fair) was riding on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The driver was a blast and it was so cool to learn about the cars that were used in the film, and wave at everyone as we explored the grounds.
Beaulieu is one of my favourite places to visit when I'm in the UK and I think I can now say it is the same for my daughter.
Very highly recommended for anyone of any age.

I thought it was a bit pricey to get in but we did spend most of the day there.
We took the dog as we were visiting on our way home from holiday accommodation. The dog wasn't allowed on the bus, Monorail, main museum or house. Which meant I did a lot of waiting around with her.
The cafe is expensive. £5 for a sandwich so would advise bringing your own. Tea for 3 , four sandwich outers and an apple juice, £38.
The children loved the play area but we didn't take them to the house as we kind of ran out of time and wasn't sure how interested they'd be.
They also enjoyed seeing Harry Potter's car and the, 'I had one of those' exhibition where you can get in the cars!
The staff we came across were friendly and helpful.
Whole area is clean and well tended.

This small museum has just a few displays, some more interesting than others. I was interested in the Roman coins on display, which had been found in the area by people with metal detectors, and eventually purchased for the museum. Since my husband is a motorcycle lover I thought it would be fun for him to visit this place during g our brief stay in the New Forest.
When I researched it and read the other reviews I had a good feeling that it would be an enjoyable experience, especially for him.
I did not expect that I would also love it as much as I did!
It is an incredibly well organised museum, with so much to see and be fascinated by. The way each section is arranged, the plaques by each model with interesting details and the other accessories which fill the spaces in between (which are all relevant to the concept of each section of the museum), make your visit even more fun and entertaining.
Already as you walk from the car park to the entrance at the rear of the building, you see some cool stuff (e.i. Retro petrol pumps and signs).
The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and we had the pleasure of briefly seeing Mr. Miller himself in the workshop, working on a bike. Definitely inspirational!
The museum is dog friendly (small dogs at least), we checked that before the visit, and when we went it was not too busy. However, I can imagine that in busy times it can get quite challenging to walk around with your dog, as the lanes can be narrow in certain parts.
We allocated a couple of hours to visit the whole museum, but we could have easily stayed longer as there’s so much to see, read and immerse yourself in.
The outside space is also very nice, unfortunately the little shops were closed when we came out of the museum but we got to enjoy a scone and a tea at cafe adjacent to the museum(where there’s also the section with the animals).
My husband enjoyed it a lot and I honestly did too!

This lovely house was well worth a visit. When you buy your ticket you are given a timed entry to join a tour. Our guide was excellent and full of useful and fun information. The position on the hillside, means that there are lovely views, and there are woodland walks around the estate. There is also an excellent cafe, Saxon church and museum.

The ‘“lady” of the house has no business being as entitled and privileged as she is. We made a small mistake with where we walked (nowhere near her house, but on what looked like public access grounds, after we were told we can walk the gardens by someone on the phone). We were with my niece, a 3 year old, who was immensely upset by the interaction, I’d say that will be a horrific core memory / trauma for her. What a violent person. Imagine owning such a beautiful piece of history, letting people tour it for an unreasonable price, then shouting at people for walking on what looks like public right of way. Clearly we aren’t the only people to have made this mistake as we were told so by some staff. Put up signs around the grounds saying private, or stop opening it up to the public. Can’t take money from people then shout at people for walking in places where there are no signs to say it’s private. Can’t have it both ways, aggressive human.

I thought this museum was mostly about the Spitfire - I was wrong. It turns out it is a very eclectic collection of aircraft and related artifacts. How did they squeeze so many planes into this building?

Solent Sky Museum is an absolute gem for aviation enthusiasts and families alike. The exhibits are fascinating, especially the legendary Spitfire and the story of Southampton’s aviation history. What a lovely museum. Visiting from Canada. Staff and volunteers were so knowledgeable and friendly. So much to see. Museum full of British aviation history and many displays about Southampton's roll in WWII. Everyone had a part to do during the war. Great police and firefighters display the past. Lots of displays. The mill and the visitor centre were very well designed, full of interesting information about the mill and the surrounding area. Definitely worth a visit. It is a lovely old mill and it is interesting looking around but there is not the information in the mill to make it an exeptional visit . If you have ever been to the mill at Winchester there is no comparison. The visitor centre over the road is nice but only small but has lots of information. I think if the mill had some more info and displays about history it would make it better. The area is lovely and there is a nice cafe attached to the visitor centre which is worth a visit even if you do not go in the mill. There is also a nice pub down the road and lots of lovely walks around the area which make a lovely day out .

I walked into this place by accident whilst touring Winchester. And boy was it a surprise the greenery at the back is an absolute gem which I didn't expect to see. Well worth a visit to all the professionally laid out museums, each one being unique in their own way. All staff were so friendly , helpful and knowledgeable a big thank you to all of them. Whilst it was horrendous that there were 95,000 lost at the Battle of Waterloo, it is put into perspective nowadays by the loss of over 254,000 Russians in Ukraine presently. Your parking is your ticket to the museum. I was hoping to see more of the inner homes historical sights. One home shows life as it was then and another showed more of the ships and items relating to them. The whole trip to Buckler’s Hard was very enjoyable, as we set out from Beaulieu, where we parked the car, and followed the footpath that brings you all the way to Buckler’s Hard. We did it because the weather was absolutely gorgeous, perhaps even slightly too hot (especially for our slightly older dog) but we thought the 2-mile walk would be feasible.
It is a beautiful walk and you immerse yourself into diverse sceneries and pockets of nature, however, according to our calculations, it was way over 2 miles (our poor dog was not impressed).
When you reach the village though, it is a very unique place and experience and while my husband and the dog sat in the beer garden of the gorgeous pub right by the bay, I visited the museum, thinking I’ll be in and out fairly quickly.
I ended up staying in there for nearly 2 hours and did not manage to read even half of all the displays: so much interesting information about naval history, ships making and life over the centuries there.
The museum is very well organised and it takes you on an immersive journey through time. Very fascinating!
I know there are also more spots to explore outside and in the surrounding area, as well as the popular boat ride but we did not have enough time to do that, as we needed to walk all the way back to Beaulieu.
I would definitely recommend to allocate a good amount of time for your trip here, to make the most of your visit!

A lovely day out in the New Forest. Plenty of parking and a generally level site although the paths are gravel /shingle so can be uneven and difficult for wheelchairs. The only steep slope is the one down to the jetty for the boat trip but it is not really wheelchair conducive anyway. (Much better to stay up at the pub, which is excellent, with some lovely beers😁)
There are options for refreshments including a Hotel Restaurant (The Master Builders House Hotel) and a relaxed cafe style area(The Captains Table) with indoor and outdoor seating and public toilets (including disabled and baby changing facilities).

A beautiful tranquil spot in the New Forest. A lovely peaceful place for a walk or learn a little about shipmaking history or even painting or sketching. Very picturesque.
Parking is changed based on length of time spent in the car park and entrance to the actual area is free, only costs incurred are if you choose to take a 30 minute boat trip or if you want to enter the meusum.
The pub within the hamlet is lovely but fairly expensive with a limited choices whereas the Captains Table cafe which is near the entrance has a broader offering and not as expensive. You can of course opted to bring your own picnic and there is plenty of open space for a camping chair or two or even a blanket.
Definitely worth a visit and somewhere I would certainly return too either alone for some peace or with family for a picnic.

In fact I've paid the extra £4 to have a yearly membership as you could easily spend a couple of days absorbing and enjoying all the information available. A real find! Not only does this gallery have an incredible main collection, it often has well curated special exhibitions - at the moment there is one on May Morris, which is well worth catching. The building itself is absolutely stunning, and a big reason to visit.

Once you get to the main museum part of the building, you will find a collection like no other. This was one of our little highlights from our holiday week of days!
The museum was was kept immaculate and it's attention to detail was brilliantly realized from bygone days.
We spent quite a long time viewing all the various displays and historical facts around the different levels of the building.

Spent over three hours driving there due to heavy traffic. Website says site closes at 4.30 but when we arrived there was a board announcing they were shutting at 4 and the young woman at the desk said there weren’t any volunteer guides as “we aren’t busy”. We visited today and weren't sure what to expect, but had a fabulous time
I should say that if you are looking for large impressive ruins then this isn't the place.
The location is well kept and has some mosaics, bath house under-floor heating and other ground level ruins. Much of the site is laid out with gravel to show the positions of walls that were previously excavated before being recovered to protect them.
There are plenty of information boards but the visit was really made great by the fabulous staff/volunteers who did a guided talk and were really happy to help, talk about the site etc.
There were also artifacts in the small museum and activities for the kids.
Well worth the £12 for a family of 4. The kids were genuinely interested in it (and in fact asked to go in the 1st place).
It was also a lovely spot for a picnic.

In fact I've paid the extra £4 to have a yearly membership as you could easily spend a couple of days absorbing and enjoying all the information available. It's a fabulous record of what occurred in the New Forest during the war and the part the area played in our victory. Videos, photos, models to enjoy too. Really interesting little museum, a great wealth of information about the New Forest Airfields. Also lots of personal stories about and from the brave airmen who flew from these bases. Also the picture gallery is to die for, I wish I was able to afford even a tenth of the work. All run by volunteers who you can tell, have a passion for what they do. They also do other events, went to a really good one in East Boldre about the flying school, this too was really interesting.
