The first room they got was covered in fleas, so they moved rooms. Then the second room was also covered in fleas and the heater wouldn’t shut off. Arrived at 2pm and was told they had 1 room available and took it since the location was great! The room was expensive but last minute and great location we decided to. AC was only available in one of the two bedrooms and the one without was extremely warm. The door to the second bedroom would not open all the way without hitting the bed! We love the building, it's in 1800s building that looks like it was converted to apartments at one point, sat vacant for a long time and then was outfitted to become a nice hotel. The host is very friendly and accommodating and we were made to feel very welcome. We stayed in one of the rooms on the top floor, as it's an old building there's no elevator so make sure that you're physically up for climbing those stairs with your luggage. Our room had a portable floor standing air conditioner in it, the exhaust hose led up to a skylight in the ceiling. It was so loud that we couldn't hear each other talk or hear the television so we limited it's use, but the exhaust hose was broken and hanging off the back so we asked the host to have a look at it while we were out one day. When we came back, somebody had been in the room to fix it, they left their half drank bottle of soda sitting on top of the mini fridge and there was a pile of trash from the repair that they stuck on the sink in the bathroom and left. It was probably just oversight on their part, but it was a pretty big turn off that somebody had been in our room and just left that mess for us to clean up after them. Having said that, it's very conveniently located in the central part of Santa Cruz, just a few minutes from the boardwalk and other attractions and easy to get to if you're driving south from the airport and San Jose. If you like Indian food, there's a fantastic restaurant called Namaste right off the boardwalk, you can get a flyer for a nice discount on the front desk at the inn. We questioned the level of security in the building as well. You can hear babbling homeless people walking up and down the street at all hours, and the locks on each door in the inn are very flimsy and anyone could shove their shoulder against the door and get in easily. None of the kind of deadbolts and latches that you see on any hotel room, anywhere in the world. We came home one evening after the front desk attendant had gone home, you enter a code on a keypad on the lock to open the door to get in. Another guest came in just before us, she'd been out for a run. We came to the front door about a minute after she did, and she had left it wide open, failed to push it closed and latch it. Anyone could have walked in off the street, up the stairs and easily gained access to any room. I think there should be some kind of an automatic closer on those main access doors after hours, so other guest's security is not left up to the whim of careless airheads like that young woman, and rooms should be outfitted with more modern, and secure locking mechanisms on each door.
