There is a nearby air strip that adds planes to the back drop of the bay. They land and take off on the eastern side of the bay and fly across the outer portion of the bay just above the ocean.
There are numerous anchored sailboats that give a nice boating backdrop to what you see looking into the bay.
There is a pier for fishing and jumping into the bay. There is also a river inlet along the eastern side of the bay with full access into the bay/ocean.
Weather may impact what you see, but it won’t impact it for long. Hanalei Bay is one of Kauai’s true wonders. It’s a beautiful drive to get to this huge bay nearly two miles in length. The Bay is surrounded by iconic, lush and green mountains and you’ll be able to clearly see waterfalls if there was recent rain activity.

1. Parking: there are 2 short driveways and a main parking area just down the road at Ha ‘ena Park. Be careful and look at all signs near the driveways and parking lot. Awesome beach. Fantastic snorkeling. Nice shade trees along the beach. Tunnels parking is very limited. We parked at Haena Beach which is only a short walk to Tunnels along the beach. We had absolutely no idea this beach was tucked back here. There is a beautiful reef on the shore you can snorkel around in. We saw dozens of species of tropical fish and even a sea turtle and eels!
The sand was soft, the water was warm, and the scenery was gorgeous.
If you only have time for one beach in Kauai, make it this one. You will not regret it. This was an unforgettable experience and I wish we had discovered this beach earlier in our trip.

Beautiful beach, the kids enjoyed snorkeling and playing in the sand. Really cool tree roots that are washed out that you can climb on and around. Kids found some coconuts which we cracked open using rocks and sticks, a fun experience! We did the shuttle, which is about a 15min ride. You make reservations online, and shuttle in at an assigned time, then walk back when done and wait for the next shuttle which can be a longer wait depending on the time of day.

This was one of my favorite beaches. First, you will need to get a pass for the park. These are timed entry tickets and you can look online to see how to acquire those. It's a short hike to the beach itself, but we carried our snorkels, chairs, and backpacks no problem.
Snorkeling is very good, but there are two big rules: avoid the left side, where there are powerful currents, and do not stand on the coral! When you first get in, you will be in an open, sandy area with little marine life besides some nearly invisible quarter-sized crabs in the sand. I recommend going almost straight out and a bit to the right and hanging around where the sand meets the coral. I saw many fish/eels here that I never saw at other beaches.
It wasn't too crowded, but the beach was plenty busy and I never felt like I was snorkeling alone. Lots of shade on the beach as well, which was a lifesaver.

This was the most crowded beach we visited, but also had some of the best snorkeling and provided the opportunity to see two sea turtles! There is a nearby surf shop where you can rent snorkels and umbrellas, though the umbrellas are a hot commodity. There is good parking, but being as popular a spot as this is it was always completely full while we were there.
Snorkeling is very good with fantastic visibility and great marine diversity. If you're facing towards the ocean, I recommend staying more towards the right side, away from the sandier left side. A good reference point is the buoy. Stay right of that, and you'll have better visibility. Saw loads of fish and eels. Just stay in the bay, and avoid the heavier surf at the bay's mouth. The water does get shallower at the mouth of the bay, and that's where I saw some bigger fish, so it was easy to get tempted out too far.
Worth the drive, no matter where you're staying on the island.

Lovely beach! Lots of sandy areas, and calm enough to swim and snorkel. If you go out far enough there are some good surfing spots. Listen – if you don’t have a four-wheel-drive or zero regard to your car’s suspension, don’t go here. The road from the turn off down to the beach is a couple of miles and has washed out potholes that are constant and made me feel like I was driving back in Haiti again. Totally worth the drive out! We had a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, and it was completely dry so we had no problems at all and made it to the furthest point in about 25 minutes. There are multiple forks in the road. The first one if you go left you come to a beach part where you can drive on the beach. DON'T do it! Even if you are in a jeep, just park up top and walk down. If you are silly enough to do it deflate your tired to about 15 psi if you don't want to get stuck, but still not worth the risk. We were saved by Grace, literally. 2 moms that live there helped us get out, one of their names was Grace, so Grace if you see this thank you!!! Also, this beach area is really cool for snorkeling. Now, if you go right at the first fork you will come to another fork, left takes you to another beach area and bathrooms. We didn't walk all the way down to that one, bc it was more of the same, still beautiful. If you go right at the second fork that's where you will go to the furthest part of the beach where it ends. There are bathrooms. You can drive down the beach, but we didn't (and we went to this one first), and wouldn't recommend it. We just parked and walked down (short easy walk, just wear shoes bc the sand is HOT.) the beach is gorgeous and we pretty much had the whole beach to ourselves. The waves were super fun to play in and the sand was amazing. One of our top 5 beaches!

I love the ocean but I can't swim, so I can't really enjoy a lot of beaches. This beach is so sheltered from the wide open ocean that I could actually enjoy the water. I heard the locals refer to it as a kiddy pool, but since that's my level of water safety, I loved it. There were nice bathrooms where you can change, and life guards on duty. Plenty of parking. No facilities, just an outhouse and a foot wash station.
Not great for swimming. Shore is a bit steep so the waves can get big and there are rocks. We only waded in a little bit. If you want to swim you could go to the beach right next to it, you can walk there.
There are also trails. There's a longer hike, or you can do the short walk up to the top of the cliff. This only took a few minutes but it is rocky terrain. You'll definitely need shoes or at least water shoes. Great view from the top (don't get too close to the edge!)
We didn't see any signs for this beach. Take the road that goes between the Hyatt and the golf course all the way down until you reach the public parking lot.

This is a pretty cool beach, especially if you come with young kids. We visited it on our last day so we didn't actually get to swim in it, but several people were snorkeling and the water was very calm. There are 2 separate swimming areas that are kind of blocked off from waves as you can see in the pictures. Of, course some waves come over the rocks, but nothing crazy. Definitely a good beach to check out just to see or if you are looking for calm waters. You can see in the pictures and video, outside of the "designated" swimming areas you would not want to swim as there is tons of drift wood everywhere and lots of rocks.

In the morning, it's calm and really well-suited for novice snorkelers. There are lots of trees so you can sit in the shade if you want to avoid some of the intense sun. Came to the beach to lay out and some light snorkeling. Good amount of parking by the campgrounds/park area. The beach in this part felt more like a narrow strip of beach but there was still enough space to lay out. We went around 3:30pm and there were lots of of shaded areas from the trees, we didn’t even need the umbrella we rented. It got shadier while we were there and by 5pm majority of the beach was shaded and only some small slivers of sun left. The sand is rocky in a lot of places and was a bit painful to walk along some parts of the shore. Tried to snorkel but didn’t see any fish. However, was fully committed to snorkeling as I had no fins so maybe if I was able to swim out further I might have seen more. From what I can tell, only a handful of people were snorkeling anyhow. Highlight was the pasture across the beach/park where there were 2 horses grazing. Was able to walk right up to them as they were hanging around the fence.

Our flight didn’t leave until 2100 hours so we decided to see a few sights we hadn’t gotten a chance to see and the Spouting Horn was one of them. It wasn’t exactly what we were expecting but it was fun to see. Just so happen a tour bus arrived there the same time we did, so we had to wait to get as close as you can to the spouting horn. Puka Dog has been a staple for our family for the past 10 to 15 years and every trip to Kauai includes at least a few visits here. We first tried them the year they opened and have been hooked ever since. In our 23 years of coming to Kauai this has become one of those must stop spots that we take all our friends and family to.
Their hot dogs are completely unique and unlike anything you would expect from a traditional hot dog stand. I always get the Polish sausage with the spicy jalapeno secret sauce, Hawaiian mustard, and either the mango or coconut relish. I have tried all the relishes over the years — pineapple, banana, starfruit — and every single one is great, but the mango is my favorite. The bread is like a Hawaiian roll that is crispy on the inside and soft on the outside and with each bite the flavors just come together perfectly.
The lemonade is another highlight. They squeeze it fresh right in front of you and you can choose half sweet or full sweet. Full sweet is the way to go. It is refreshing and the perfect balance of tart and sweet.
The staff and the owner have always been kind and welcoming even when the line is wrapped around the building which it usually is. The place has blown up with social media and Food Network features but even back before all of that it was one of our favorite spots. The new location is also awesome since it is right across from the beach where you can often see turtles or seals while you eat.
I cannot say enough good things about Puka Dog. It is hands down one of our favorite places on the island and we sometimes go 10 to 15 times in just a two week trip. It has become a family tradition and I will keep recommending it to anyone visiting Kauai.

We had to try the famous puka dog on our trip to Hawaii! Be prepared to wait in line. The dog was called a Polish sausage but I would call it a hot dog.
Great concept, awesome sauces, but way too much bread (the meat to bun ratio is off), and the actual dog was not very tasty. We didn't hate them but were a tad disappointed after all the hype. I had the original mild lemon garlic sauce and coconut relish which was excellent. No mustard. My husband did the jalapeno sauce, mango relish, and a mustard. Check them out if you are in the area, but don't expect too much.
A few tweaks like a thinner bun & a better tasting sausage and these puka dogs could be phenomenal! The fresh squeezed lemonade was lovely, we chose the 1/2 sugar option. So good!

First of all, this is NOT an easy hike. It is long and difficult with some fairly sketchy places. I'm honestly surprised it is legal to hike. That said, it is achingly beautiful. The mountains are unbelievable, and every rustle of the bushes you expect a dinosaur to pop out at you (not to worry though, it's just goats). One of my favorite beaches on Kauai! Also called "Secret Beach". Parking can be found by mapping to Kauapea (Secret) Beach trail head. There's a short drive on a dirt road to get there and parking spots are limited and in a residential area so it's important to be respectful and not block the road/driveways.. I'm sure on weekends and peak season it gets busier, but I've always found it to be much quieter and more chill here than other popular beaches. This is probably due to the short but steep climb down to the beach. It's not too tough, but can be dangerous after rain (which of course is common). I'm a destination wedding photographer and I love this location for elopement ceremonies and sunset portraits. (Note you do need a permit for ceremonies/photos here). The beach itself is amazing. But do NOT take the route provided by Google Maps to this location. It will take you down the wrong road and deposit you at the entrance to private property. Instead, put in Trailhead to Kauapea Beach, which will give you the correct directions. A kind neighbor at the turnaround at the end of the wrong road posted the attached directions, which did eventually get us to Kauapea (Secret) Beach. Note thst there is NO signage on the gravel/dirt road to get to the trailhead.

This beach is so very magical. The backdrop scenery of the mountains and cascading waterfalls is worth the walk for the amazing photo opportunities. Sand is silky just need to be careful and respectful of the coral that washes ashore. I would definitely say swimming, snorkeling and surfing is for expert only experience with all the jagged rocks and coral substrate but also definitely worth wading around for some great photos. There is also 2 areas where fresh water from the mountain and salt water from the beach mix and it’s a treat to stick your feet in at that spot. Across the road from the parking lot is the dry cave and a few waterfalls that were nice to see flowing strong. Be aware on a rainy day the road to get to the beach can flood and only suv or 4x4 vehicles are safe to pass.

Absolutely gorgeous views. Great walking, biking path along the coast of Kauai. It's amazing to see the power of the waves pushing large driftwood around. We even saw it moving & rocking this huge rock/boulder. There are information plaques along the way with information about the history of Kauai and sea creatures. We only got to do a small part & decided we would explore another area in a few days.
